19:56 "She is going to die for nothing!" You got it all wrong there. Her dying was an integral part of Toronaga's plan. She was supposed to die by seppuku so the nobles would revolt against Ishido. When that did not happen, she found another way to die to keep Toronaga's plan on track.

i think the whole lack of a “second” specifically for mariko she practiced catholicism so she believed that her soul would be damned if she took her own life.

The second delivers the coup the gras, but let's not forget, the person performing Seppuku slashes his/her belly first. So although the actual cause of death is decapitation, the person still initiated the suicide.
When the Anjin said he would do it, he told her that the already seen hell so leave it from her mind. He did not want her to feel guilty for letting him take part and being condemned.
