I love this show but I hope there is no season 2. It's just so perfect as it is! Great shows are great shows because they end.

Lady Mariko is based on real person. We even have the poem she wrote before her death. "Only when you know the time to fall, Flowers can become flowers, People can become people."

Not only did ishido shoot himself in both feet by 1 giving the permit to allow them to leave. But then 2 trying to capture mariko only resulting in her death. So now both worst case scenarios they spoke about in the meeting are inevitable.

    *Hosokawa Gracia (1563 - 25th of August 1600)*
Mariko-sama is based on this unparalleled historical woman.
And here is her last written words.
    Her death poem:
    散りぬべき 時知りてこそ
    世の中の
    花も花なれ 人も人なれ
_Only by knowing when to fall_
    _Do flowers become flowers_
    _And people become people_
*Hosokawa Gracia walked the short road to perfection - short, but not easy. She died when she was only 37 years old.*
_In her life, she endured burdens no one should have to bear - treachery destroyed her family, her husband was mentally and physically abusive, and she spent years in hiding for fear of death. Yet she emerged from these pressures as a diamond. I compare her to a gem, first, because her birth name, Tama, can mean stone, gem, or pearl, but second because of all the different sides or faces that composed her being, sides offering us different perspectives from which to view her life. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but no matter which of Gracia’s faces we choose to analyze, that of a samurai, a proto-feminist, a wife, a mother, or a Christian, they are all beautiful._

Ishido gave the permit but he had no intention of letting them leave. He worked out a deal with Yabushige to let in the ninjas to capture her but they ended up blowing her up instead.

Mariko knew her role well. She was supposed to die by seppuku to cause a revolt among the nobles against Ishido. When that did not happen, she found a way to die so Toronaga's plan stayed on track.

Mariko legit noblewoman.. while Ishido risen from dirt. And he hates her and himself for that lmao.

She is clearly dead, you can see in slow motion that the blast cut her body in half at the waist.

    この登場人物は全て実在の人物をほぼそのまま表現しています。マリコも細川ガラシャを参考にしており、石田三成との確執後の最期にかなり近いです。

Toranaga, through Mariko had checkmate. Either she was able to get the hostages out… or she decimated Ishido’s influence by her death. That said, I don’t think the intention was for her to die.

    • @bogeyb200
      @bogeyb200 Před měsícem +2

It was understood, by Toranaga, (and Mariko) that they may not allow her to die, but would try to capture her. Both knew the odds of her returning unharmed was tiny., It was a check mate move (as Ochiba clearly understood, and appreciated) but in the book it also causes a chain reaction of other things.. Also, in the book, Blackthorne survives because of Mariko (she made a deal with the Church) I will be curious how they wrap this up in Final Episode.

    • @Leonnie13

@@bogeyb200 Yes. It seems like insufficient time to wrap up. I read the book multiple times but a few decades ago. Might want to pull it out of my bookshelf again. Off topic… did you notice they are now selling the book in two parts but not at a discounted cost from the single version? SMH I love the cover art though.

Thinking it was set up by Toranaga. Going to look like Ishido ordered the ninja attack, and the people will turn against him. Banger of a show!

Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end.
(Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success.
Speaking of which, its so heartwarming and heart breaking that scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... i think I'm sweating through my eyes.
And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her.
Mariko chose where to meet her end, and did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Yabushige also left his vest with bloodstains when he raised the alarm to act like he was also surprised. He is not getting out of this alive.

Historically, Mariko committed seppuku after she wasnt given permission to leave. Her death was ishido's downfall, it was checkmate all around.

funny how many westerners assume the japanese will act like westerners.
isn’t the point of the show is to present how different other people think and act
and yet so many people blurt out loud, “somebody stop this!” during the seppuku…. 🤣
bruh, no japanese is going to stop a seppuku ritual. it’s as sacred as going to church for them.
also so many people don’t understand why blackthorne agreed to second mariko rather than stop her.
he was was beginning to understand 🙄

Toranaga was so selfish by sacrificing his best two team members just to start a fkn crimson sky plan which we will have no time to see it fully I believe. Anna Sawai did a grand great job by carrying the whole show on her shoulders. no offense, but I see her efforts are overcoming the rest of crew. Cosmo Jarvis was not the best one for this role, they could have been chosen someone else way better than him. Many scenes lake his emotional reactions which can be also seen in his real character out of the show during the interviews with the cast. if that show was long, I am not sure it will be the best show to keep watching without Mariko.
