Hey friends! Just wanted to correct myself and I’ve had a lot of conversations in the comment section about it, I appreciate the correction. There is a mix of cgi and puppeteering in this film. I think I lent too heavy on the term CGI to try and not spoil what was in the egg as I didn’t want to give any hints for those who haven’t seen the trailer. I used it instead of a replacement for “entity” at times. I’ll keep this in mind for future reviews. Because it is my initial reaction it means I don’t have time to research that aspect so I should have handled it with a bit more curiosity. Thanks for letting me know 🥰
Oh also it’s on Vudu! I rented it on there with my VPN
In the United States hatching hits Hulu on May 6 2022 for those unable to attend the cinema
This isn’t supposed to be an “Oh no! Scary monster!” movie. It’s a horror of the cerebral nature. Such incredible metaphor and symbolism. It’s also more of a magical realism movie and the events shouldn’t be taken as things that are actually happening. Also the puppeteering was some of the best I’ve ever seen. Incredible movie. Can’t wait to see it again. Also I saw this in the theater and there were two teenagers who left about twenty minutes in and I couldn’t help but laugh.
It's a female horror film. That's for sure. A female/milennial/social media horror film. Could you explain how/why you see it as a "cerebral" movie?. I'd say the "symbolism" is pretty in your face...
We also got a rescue greyhound 4 months ago. I'd love to know all about Gromit!
I watched it in cinema, it was so bizarre. A late-night showing with a few people in the hall. It was very "WTF is going on?" in the best way
Haha amazing
I had the pleasure of watching it at the Almao Drafthouse theater yesterday for a late night showing and it honestly wasn't all to bad watching it in a theater. I do want to point out there were a couple of practical effects that they did use in the film it wasn't always CGI but you can tell when they use CGI. If you're ok with sitting down and letting this movie just take you on a weird journey then you'll like it.
Totally agree! Glad you enjoyed it
Can’t wait to watch this! I thought it had an April 29 VOD release, so I was disappointed to see that it’s slated to come out May 17th, but I’ll be watching for sure!
It’s on vudu now in America
I just saw it at the theater. I really felt that the only CGI I noticed was the very end of the film, the climax. I felt there was mostly practical effects for the majority of the film. I feel for me that CGI is noticed a lot more at home on my TV than at the theater.
Otherwise I agree with your points about the content of the film but I myself would rate it higher, maybe 7.5/10 for me.
Great review again Emma, enjoy hearing your point of view of course!
Hey! I corrected myself in the pinned comment! Thanks for sharing your thoughts I’m glad you liked it!
@@spookyastronauts Yeah, I read that after I made my comment, sorry for being another pile on, lol :)
I saw this out of Sundance but I don't recall it being super CGI-filled. In fact, there's been a good amount of press about the puppet and makeup work.
Yeah! There’s a mix I believe. But your right, since seeing it I’ve read there a lot to the puppeteering. I still think the look of the thing may turn people off. For me I still enjoyed the look, it just wasn’t as scary.
I felt the same, I only noticed the CGI in the climax scene. I felt it was MOSTLY practical up to that point.
I have to respectfully disagree. I saw it in the theaters on Thursday night not watching the trailer. I was blown away. I read about the puppeteers and all of the work that went into the anamatronic and set design around it. I found it mesmerizing but then again I love puppets and odd creatures. I loved the ending, was perfect for such a bizarre movie. Will definitely watch again. I give it an 8 out of 10. Not much scare more like what the eff was that?!
That’s great! I’m really happy to hear that!
I loved this movie. Not many movies go this weird route and still have a solid story. Best mom ever lol
This sounds a little bit like a weird anime, that is super cool, called Angel's egg.
Awe Grommet leads the way. He’s the best boy in the world!
He’s trying to beat me to the couch 😂😂
@spookyastronauts I just rewatched this for the first time since last year and I was quite speechless again with this movie. The CGI didn’t bother both times and I think I liked this more than you did but I agreed with most of your points about it. Nice review and thank you!
I liked it and I wasn't expecting anything. Was surprised.
I had the same reaction to watching "X" by Ti West. "What the hell in hootinany am I watching?"
That one was pretty obvious
@@MrBooone uh...sarcasm detector in the shop? The flick was bonkers, hence the question.
I watched this at the theater 2 days ago and I really loved it. It’s definitely a sleeper hit that deserves more exposure. I loved the cinematography and the creature effects :)
I saw this in the cinema a few months ago so I don’t have it all that fresh in my mind - just remember that it was wierd and I was unsure what it all ”ment”. The thing I did like though was the good use of practical effects - I think you might be off about the CGI, I think most of it was actually very ambitious puppets.
Yep! I’ve updated the pinned comment about that. They did use some cgi but I was kind of dancing around the word entity, I should have just said SFX since that can cover practical too?
This sounds really fun! Also you look amazing in that color 🥺❤️
I loved your intro- made me laugh💜 “oh hi”
Fantastic review... Gotta check this out
Thank you! For recommending, saw it yesterday, I loved it.
Awesome 5am Sunday X!
Your review has me so excited and intrigued. Going to see it in about a hour thanks to you.
Enjoy!
@@spookyastronauts thanks, I did!
Please do a breakdown!!!
I’ll be back when I can watch along. Looks awesome.
I really wanted to see “Hatching” when I saw the trailer. When I showed the trailer to my husband he didn’t like it but my son seemed interested. So I waited and now it is available on Hulu 😌 so I can enjoyed it with my puggle ( Pug and Beagle mixed) and cat. I’m glad you made a non-spoiler review for Hatching. I’m glad I found your horror movie channel and it is so cute, the neck warmer for Grommit 😎
I watched Hatching in the cinema here in Sweden a couple of weeks ago. It was actually quite fun seeing it at the theatre with other people. :D
I also thought it wasn't that scary, but still very unsettling. Most of all it was the mother and her smile that made my skin crawl. I don't know what I thought about the entity, but it was pretty original.
I really liked the aesthetic of the film, with roses and sunshine on one hand, and on the other ... Well, it was pretty disgusting at times. I found the symbolism to be quite heavy handed at times. The aesthetic was the big win for me.
I have a rescue greyhound in the UK ,the best calm friend I have ❤️
Yes, I have wanted to see this.
I should’ve watched this while I was making breakfast.
Just about to watch this to finish a lazy day horror marathon I hope it’s good🤞🏻
I'm in Perth too and can't seem to find it being shown in cinemas.
💛great review
You got me interested! I never heard of this movie!
nice review
I really liked it! Originality counts for so much for me. It did feel like a bit of a bait and switch, but what it switched into was pretty crazy so I had fun with the ride.
But was it really even a horror movie? Almost more just like a sci-fi family drama I think. I was hoping for something terrifying. Oh well, still super cool.
I got offered a screener for this but went to a Monsterfest screening instead and I'm so glad I did, especially for the bewilderment from the row of 40-something men behind me
i held my pee after watching this movie and i'm not a horror fan cuz they not scary but this takes scary to a next level love it
I want to watch this at home too 🤘
Not being released until September in the UK. Maybe it'll be moved forward because of the hype?
Yeah def interested to check this one out!!! Don’t know if I’ll make it to the theater but when it hits on Vod im on it! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
It’s on vod! On vudu!
@@spookyastronauts I was looking like all day thank you so much! You’d think they’d make it easier to find lol plus a little user error hahahah
This isn’t coming out in the UK until
September 🥲
I don’t know why, but the description reminds me of The Reflecting Skin
I'm always worried that you just let your child watch so many horror movies with you, but now I'm glad to know that Gromit just sleeps during the movies
Haha he’s one of those dogs that doesn’t even see the tv he thinks we just sit down and watch a black box
It was good. Just saw it. "Florida" Best I've seen in a while.
Greatest finnish horror movie ever made. There is not many but I highly recommend this. cgi is not great, but it is minimal.
What about rare exports!?
Good movie. Just seen. Weird and refreshing. Agreed that it left me speechless as well. But definitely one of the better horrors I've seen recently..👍
I've been wanting to rent this, but can't find anywhere to do so as of right now!
Wish I could see it in theaters, but don't know anyone to babysit my 4 year old. I will be patiently waiting to rent/stream here in the US.
It’s a rental on Vudu
@@spookyastronauts Thank you! I couldn't find it just by googling. Thanks to you I'm gonna watch it right now, and come back to your video afterwards!
considering the budget for the movie , watchable movie
I saw this movie early @ SIFF, really fun film. I enjoyed the mom character. Solid effects for the bird daughter/sister
🥚
What streaming service did you use??
Rented it on vudu
can you review the woman in black.
That would make my day!
Caught it at Sundance and I really enjoyed it. I loved the mother 😂
Haha you love the evil ones!
Watched it! Very interesting film. The psychological layering was off the charts! Some disgusting things, but not particularly scary. I thought the cinematography and the set dressing was pretty close to impeccable. What a beautiful background to such f***ed up s**t. You are absolutely correct, no need to see it on the big screen. I would give it a 7/10 just because it was interesting to watch 🤷🏼♀️ As always great recommendation!
It isn't coming to the UK until September 😩 So annoying!
Hmmm not sure about this one! I think I’ll watch it home on a day where there’s nothing else to watch. Creature films and CGI aren’t my thing, so it isn’t at the top of my watchlist. Thanks for doing this video, Em! ❤️
Thanks for watching!
I’m literally watching this a 7 20 today
I’m gonna rent it I hope it’s good
I may have to think on whether I wanna watch this one. Lol.
I am waiting for this one!
I think there's no CGI in this movie. It's all practical effects. Which makes the movie more impressive
There’s some cgi but a lot of it is puppetry 🤘🏼
Thanks for the warning. The concept of this movie sounds really intriguing to me, but I have pretty severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting) and it sounds like there's tons of that in this movie, so I'm going to have to give it a pass.
Yessss!
hey emma i just finished it lol ,, i really dont knwo what to say about this movie, lol,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,pure bizare wish you can do a deep review about the deep meaning of this movie and story
I love you.
I just gave you your 1000th like on this.
Thank you!!!!
I personally find that just about everything IFC- MIDNIGHT is 9xoutof10 is pretty good! Sounds like something I would like! After my man on Those horror pals stopped doing reviews because of the way he looks?? His words not mine. I have switched over to you!! I really love your reviews! I really hope he does good with his podcast stuff! But now let’s talk spooky stuff!!!! Oh ya I got two Yorkie’s brothers and they are double trouble named. Bowie Bo and Old-Thing! Dem is my babies!
The mother in the movie reminds me of a norwegian influencer who lives the picture perfect life. That kind of life is creepy.😀
It was ok.
I would have went in a different direction, but.
🖤
Where is ur sweater from?? 💕
Teddy fresh
Where is it you've rented it from Emma?
Vudu
@@spookyastronauts Much appreciated 🤘
where do you rent this from?
Vudu
I can’t find anywhere to rent it in the US. Help?
From everything I have read, it was released in US theaters yesterday and will be VOD May 17th. So maybe she meant it was available in theaters and not to rent? I could be wrong, but that is all I have found about it.
It’s on vudu, I rented it
Howdy
I finally saw this few days ago and I was a bit disappointed because there was not even ONE moment that I found scary. It was interesting but failed as horror.
It took me a bit for it all to click...

It's a cukoo!
A bird that gets another to raise its eggs, pretending to be one of them, slowly replacing the other children.
The moment I saw the blood pouring into Alli's mouth... I knew that the mom would just replace Tinja with Alli and act like nothing would happen.
The dad re-burying the dog instead of telling the nieghbor... They 100% are gonna hide Tinja's body and let Alli replace her.
i’m sold hahahahaha

This would've have happened if the mother hadn't broke the first bird's neck. And she had to put it down because it didn't die, so in a way she is cleaning up her mother's mess. Like with keeping the secret of her mother's affair.
you are hilarious
omg omg omg
i didnt notice cgi, but maybe because i thought it was all practical effects 😅
It was a mix :)
@@spookyastronauts the person announcing the movie at the festival focused so much on the practical effects aspect. i think i was confused at some points in the movie 😂
How do you handle a nightmare when you have one?
Don’t really have them 🤷🏻♀️
Vudu doesn't work with a VPN in Canada please anyone have a resource?
Switch your vpn to America, then you should be able to rent it from vudu. Vudu isn’t even available in Australia and I use it all the time with a vpn
@@spookyastronauts surfshark isn't working ig :(
Send them a message, they will let you know how to reroute it… it works for me!
Why is there an ad gor Aussie hair care under your video? 😳
I just watched it and I loved it... Women directors are making the best horror film nowadays! Spoiler warning:I think the film is a bit like Black Swan, a young woman growing and being pushed by her mother to succeed; but in Hatching, instead of the character killing her innocence into adulthood, it's the mother who kills her innocence and turns her into a b*tch like her. I guess you don't have mommy issues, Emma, good for you!!!
First Comment Today ! 🙋♂️ Emma 😃
How on earth did you see this from home?
I found this movie on Hulu US this morning, and due to your review Emma, I'm SUPER interested. The problem is, we have 10 days until Halloween. 🎃🥚 Watch now, or wait for horror binge? 🤔
Please, are there birds involved?? I’m terrified of birds.
Yes
Im in the States and i cant rent it.
I can't find it anywhere either
Vudu!
@@jessied4105 Thanks Jessie D :)
@@jessied4105 yep. Vudu Fandango. TY!
This movie had the feel and the acting of a B movie, at best. But hey, it’s a good conversation piece…watch it.
Ah but did you 'finnish' the movie......i am so sorry.
This film was just really odd. I appreciate the symbolism and the films over all message but there are some moments that are soooooo questionable in terms of tone and characters reactions to things. I also thought the child actor playing Matias the son is absolutely horrible in terms of his performance. I have to say the films over all biggest issue is that no one is really likeable except for the dude the mom is seeing. I liked the puppet work it was fantastic. But over all I feel like the films biggest issue is that some scenes feel super tone Def. It was just really bizarre or feel like a Neil Breen movie.
Too bright in the day for a viewing, needs some room darkening me thinks
Just came back from the theaters. 6/10 for me.. i think most people will see the ending coming from a mile away.. I was disappointed by that
Man, I hate CGI so much. . . That Eraserhead baby is still unnerving and I guarantee you there isn't any CGI that will hold up 50 years later. It's like you're putting an expiration date on your movie.
As a correction it’s not all CGI it’s practical effects too but so is eraser head 🤷🏻♀️
