    So the story in a way reminded me of how Gerald's Game is structured. With her talking to others in the room, he was also talking to other children. You could really tell it was adapted how the book would of read.

    Personally, I liked that we don’t know much about the Grabber. I like that they spend most of the movie on the children and victims and telling their stories, and as much as I enjoyed Ethan Hawk’s performance I understand why he didn’t get more screen time.

      I totally agree, I sorta like that they didn't show much of the "inner mind" of the Grabber as a killer, sometimes films that become so obsessed with getting inside the mind of killers almost sensationalize serial killers.

      I liked the brother its so rare these days to see any boy or man portrayed in a good light. It was refreshing, invigorating and completely shattered and smashed the matriarchy by empowering a male and being about his journey of finding his inner strength and the ability to believe in himself. This is set in the 70's so he'll have a good 10 to 20 years to enjoy his life before woke/radical feminism makes him toxic and problematic

    I actually felt that the film was multi layered and damn near perfect. Derrickson and Cargill craft a nuanced, multi-layered narrative that takes horror elements and supports them with attentive discussion of cycles of abuse, trauma, and the bond of youth. Hawke’s Grabber is characterized by personality reversal. His faux-jolly disposition flaunts animated mannerisms and a high-pitched voice. It’s eerily childlike, hitching itself to a suggestion of trauma-based age regression behavior, and juxtaposing with the adult-like profanity and maturity with which the kids speak. But the zany harlequin act is fleeting, leaving Finney at the mercy of a total change: a husky, deep tone of voice and unforgiving, violent demeanor.

      What I don't understand is it was a great movie, it was simple yet clever and most importantly entertaining. Why is this soooo difficult for Hollywood/entertainment industry to do? I think apart from Old Henry and X this is the only other movie I have enjoyed in this entire year and I used to watch a movie every single night and always enjoyed a few a week but now its less than a handful a year

    I loved the film. It was a little slow at one moment but as soon as that entered my mind it was gone. I also thought it embodied the 70s really well. I think a lot of people don’t understand the 70s or didn’t like that and it impacted their opinion. It was also way more a thriller than horror.
    Edit: Woah you didn’t think the father added anything? He’s the entire reason why Finny could stay alive. It was Finny’s ability to live with his father that kept him from playing the game.

    I loved this movie, I don't care about the jump scares because the tension was held really well imo. I love how the siblings were active in the plot, it almost does feel slightly similar to stranger things, but not in a cheesy way. Also I like how they didn't focus on the grabbers character but instead the relationships between the kids and the siblings, it made it feel more sad and "heartwarming" that the kids and his sister were trying to help Finny. Also can we talk about how satisfying that ending was?!!! I loved the ending and I think this movie was a really great palate cleanser in between some more disturbing films; it's like a fun/ spooky horror that leaves you satisfied and empowered with a happy ending, which seems to be few and far between these days.

    🏠🏠...I had noticed the two different home addresses in Gwen's dreams.
    In Gwen's first vision, Finney is yelling "Help" while pushing himself at a door, trying to get out of a home with 1242 (or something like that) as the address. The Grabber's brother's "detective work" can be seen in the backdrop as Finn bangs/pushes at the door.
    When Gwen is "with" Vance Hopper in the back of the police car, the car takes them to a 7741 address ( leafless tree in the yard).
    42:14 = 1242 (or so) 🏠
    1:14:43 = 7741 🏠

  • @HouseofHannah
    @HouseofHannah Před rokem +4

    I just got home from seeing it ! The only thing I would have wanted explained a little more was The Grabber's motivation. I think everything else is fine as is, since the answer is the paranormal, which can't be explained anyway. I think this is a good entry level horror movie for people. I did find it to be too slow in the beginning, a bit boring, and with some weird acting, but it really came into itself in the second half, with the child actors really shining. There are only 3 jumpscares here, so I don't agree that the movie is riddled with them, but they are effective, and work well with what's happening.
    I think the utilization of the mask by the villain was a great way to have him appear more sinister, and really brought in those creepy vibes to set the tone. None of the characters make dumb decisions, or do out of character things for the plot, which I found to be really refreshing. It was nice to just be able to root for the characters, and not be annoyed by their actions. Having the movie be this full-circle moment was the perfect ending, with each phone call being a reason that Finney is able to accomplish what he does in the end.

    • @spookyastronauts
      @spookyastronauts  Před rokem +2

    • @pegacorn13
      @pegacorn13 Před rokem

      I actually disagree. After thinking about why The Grabber is so disturbing and frightening, I came to the conclusion that he is so because we are given very little backstory. The guy is a monster and I think it's highly inferred that at some point he was the victim of familial abuse in that very same basement. He also has the psychic ability to hear the phone but consciously chooses to ignore it. This movie is about the kids and their perspective. I don't think Finney gave two shi*s about what The Grabber's motivation was. He was evil, manipulative and cruel and the objective was to escape. There's really no humanity to see in The Grabber because he simply is what he's become. We don't need to sympathize with him because there's nothing to sympathize with. Whatever happened to him as a child is irrelevant: he is only a violent murderer and abductor of children. Too many films rely on explaining a character's motivation versus focusing in the victim's perspective. I usually like complex horror movies with a lot of context but this was the rare film whose simplicity was incredibly effective at still managing to evoke some significant anxiety and fear for the characters that for whatever reason I cared for tremendously.

    I’ve read many short stories from different genres. I bought Joe Hill’s book which contains horror short stories including The Black Phone.
    So it was only 22 pages… true to the name “short story”. Honestly I expected more. It felt rushed, rough-and-ready. It started with a longer description of the Grabber, minimal mention about Finney and again longer description of the basement. And suddenly the story ended. If I hadn’t watch your video I could not have even recognised the importance of The Black Phone- again long description of the phone without giving any significance to it.
    I don’t really know what was Hill’s aim with the story but to me it was missing so much. It felt like he found a theme to write about and then he just got bored and ended it. I haven’t seen the movie yet but now I’m just very curious to see the difference. Great video Emma ☺️ thank you!

    I just saw this last night and I was surprised by how good it was. I am not a Sinister fan and in fact I usually cringe when I see that a film is attached to Blumhouse. But everything about this movie just worked. It captured the 70's vibe to almost perfection and while I usually prefer more complex horror films, The Black Phone just hit perfectly. It's definitely simple, fun horror but there's a story in there and a lot of it had to do with the dad. There's no way Finney would have survived without having the skills that came from caring from his dad. How do you know how to play naughty boy? By playing it everyday with your alcoholic father. Why does The Grabber's mask change in every scene, revealing different parts of his face? Because you are never sure which Grabber you're going to get: just like you never know how your drunk dad is going to act at home. The kids in this movie were absolutely fantastic and the scene when Gwen was being beat by her father felt so real that I cried. I cared about these characters so much that I don't think I could have emotionally handled any other ending. And this is coming from someone who actually prefers a darker finish in most circumstances. Maybe it was the fact that I'm a child of the 70's or maybe it was simply that this is a really solid horror movie. There's some really good jump-scares in there for sure but the movie certainly didn't rely on them to make it good. And finally, Ethan Hawke was incredible and I liked that we know little about his backstory because in the end, this is a movie from the perspectives of the kids. The Grabber does what he does and even though we're given some hints as to why, the important part is that he's a monster who murders children and could enter the room at any moment and do anything he wants to you. The clever humor was spot on and the actress who played Gwen just nailed it. I'm writing a novel here because I usually don't like these types of movies. Pretty much everything from Sinister to Smile manages to make me roll my eyes but The Black Phone does a popcorn horror/ ghost story real justice.

    I actually liked some of the elements that were maybe suggested or hinted at, but not really explained. I think these movies work best when they leave some stuff for the audience to fill in, because the thing that scares us the most is the unknown. Fully explaining every clever detail might make writers feel smart, but it removes the uneasiness of the unknown.
    So, it is implied that all three main characters have some sort of psychic ability (since Finney and the Grabber both hear the phone ring, but nobody else does), but the psychic abilities can turn dark (the Grabber and the dead mother), possibly even demonic. The abusive father fears that darkness, even if he doesn't understand its source, because it killed his wife. I love how there is a whole world, with its own history here, but we only see how that history bounces off of the current story.
    I hope we never get sequels or full details of every backstory. I like the negative space element.

    It’s really funny when kids get so upset they curse!
    I completely agree ,the sisters character is enough to make it worth seeing! I didn’t like it as much as Sinister though.
    The character is one we all typically hope to see in some way during any SNatural Horror! I really liked that aspect!
    I had some issues with the story though ,but thought the sound and all the period work was totally on point! Great even!
    We completely miss an important back story ,which sucked ,but afterwards wondered, is it because we get to see the two protagonists story?
    Their home life as an insight to probably why the Grabber is the way he is,resulting in us seeing the same thing twice?
    I was confused why in a dream ,the pinball kid gets dropped off at the house(the last house he should be dropped off at) ,as if it was his house?

    Hi Emma! Thank you always for your wonderful review. You always manage to do an excellent breakdown and review without giving away any of the plot which is pretty amazing. I’m writing this comment solely to say that if by some small miracle you (person reading this) have not seen the trailer DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER!!!!! I’m sorry if this has been said before but I was soo pissed/frustrated with the trailer giving away like 2/3rds of the films plot. So please avoid that thing at all cost.

    Hey Emma - Just finished watching “The Black Phone”, it opened wide here in the States last week. I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the film. I enjoyed it, but didn’t love it. Both kids were some of the best kid performances I’ve seen, and they carry the film. I’ve read the short story (almost 2 years ago) and the main difference is the book is not as linear as the movie. A lot of the backstory (including the father) was added. The father bugged me, mostly b/c the actor resembles Ethan Hawk, so (even though I had previously read the book) I thought there was going to be a twist involving the father. I also got Sinister vibes, though I didn’t know it was done by the same director. 💕 the channel. 👻👩‍🚀

    Thanks for the review, Emma. I think I will have to wait until video, because of the multiple jump-scare factor. It's just easier for me to enjoy without the theatrical sound infused headaches.
    I think you will find that the short story has only a "bare bones" plot and, based on my seeing the trailer, a lot of elements were added to the film, including the villain being completely reinvented for the film. Scott Derrickson is a great horror director, but his films are hit and miss. While "Sinister" was incredible, I remember the next film he did was "Deliver Us From Evil" and that film was quite underwhelming.

    The “childhood trauma leads to resiliency” theme is not new and is used constantly in horror. But I really liked how it was done here. The most horrific moment to me was the dad beating the dtr towards the beginning of the film. :(

What caused him to be so disturbed? Also the u derlying brutality throughout the film is what disturbs one so much. Sinister, the brutalness was more straight forward, this one builds and leaves you disturbed long after the final credits rolled
