One thing not mentioned is the synth score. It was like a character in the film. Loved that this is wasn't one of those generic scores. It stood out in a good way.
Always excited to hear something about movie music :o this sounds interesting and I'll take note of it!
That bday scene was AMAZING
I agree. The score is fantastic.
ok but the subtle jumpscare in the background💀 why’s no one talking about that
Totally came here to see who else noticed that haha. That was great
;)
I seen that too I thought I was crazy!
Creepy Emma showing up outside the window was amazing and creative. How are more people not mentioning this? Also the lighting on your seats was tripping me out lol. Can’t wait to see this, thanks for the review!
Saw this last night and left with a smile. While it features many familiar tropes and clichés, I found for the most part it makes them work to the film's advantage rather than succumb to them.
I'm also glad they used people's real faces to smile instead of a stupid filter effect like in Truth or Dare.
Great acting, a nice symbolic twist on the curse and even dream sequences, and a really cool monster reveal.
yeah 100% agree it had cliches that worked, well done eh!
@Es Exactly what I was gonna say lol
It’s so shocking how many good reviews this movie is getting. Really unexpected
wdym? this movie was dogshit if you wanna watch better movies watch marvel
I was definitely not looking forward to this movie, and it was actually really good!
I watched movie and I think I screamed out loud twice and looked away a few times
It's the message of the film that makes it great
@Rick Soldier of God Bro you gotta see it - it's not the smiling people that makes it scary, trust me
6:10 EMMA OMG
OK when u just popped up behind the car....THAT WAS CREEPY and I was yelling..."Turn around"!!!! Lol
Spoken like a true horror fan 🙂
ME TOO!!! It was brilliant! 👏👏👏👏
Yep my husband caught that
I thought I was imagining it and had to rewind the video a little. Lol.
I’m so glad to see all the positive reviews for this movie. As soon as I saw the trailer, it gave me those nostalgic feelies for early 2010 movies but it still felt like it would be different and spooky. Great video as always Emma :)
6:07 That freaked me out. That young lady behind the car.🤣
Pretty sure thats Emma! She’s playing with us 😂
I was going to say the same.. Like I made a jump xD
That made me laugh so hard. Loved that cheeky insert.
Lmao she got me for sure. I was like wtf!!!!
Yessss! Emma 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😂
Solid entry into the curse-horror subgenre... Sosie Bacon really sold it. Look out for her.
Laura hasn’t slept is what smile is based on
Yes same creator!! Cant remember if it’s the director or bot
I WAS WORKING WHILE WATCHING AND This was my background sound. Then I take a look at the vid and I swear that smile SCARED the living hell out of me.
That thumbnail scared the shit outta me at first 😂 I like that you added that in. I'm excited to see this movie.
Yesss! Brilliant
Same!!
One jump scared actually had me shaking for a few seconds. I don’t think I’ve gotten startled like that with a movie before. There was also a time I physically had my hand over my mouth because I was so in shock at what I had just witnessed. I went into this movie thinking it was gonna be some cheesy cheap jump scare movie. Left the movie scared to walk to my car. Pleasantly surprised with this one!
As you were describing the colour tones of blue and pink, I couldn't help but notice your blue (ish?) shirt, the blue-ish tinge inside your car, and the pink-ish hue of your facial features. And then, whilst stroking your amber locks, you went on to describe how the colour palette devolved into some more earthy, autumnscape-like tones. And that, to me, was pure poetry.
This movie truly took me off guard. I was shocked by the great press that the movie was getting especially since I thought the trailer looked like another Truth or Dare. But then I watched this and I was like "wait this is executed so splendidly" that I ended up getting so absorbed into the film.
Also your thumbnail is so funny LOL! Great review, Emma!
I found much to love in the story and themes of 'Smile', which made the already creepy proceedings entirely stressful for me to sit through. I also lived through the exact same past trauma as the main character and have dealt with depression/suicide most of my life. I'm also currently studying to become a therapist, just like her. This film was so true to life in these aspects that I can't give it enough praise. I know not everyone will connect with the film the way I have and that's fine. I feel like it was made for people like me, as well as those affected by the trauma of others. I hope this film will, at the very least, start more conversations about mental illness to lessen the stigma and maybe lead to more general education on the subject. YOU DON"T HAVE TO BE SILENT. THERE IS HELP. YOU MATTER. YOU ARE LOVED.
I LOVED the score. Heavy, disturbing synth, chanting at times, cackling and electronic dread. I hope Parount releases a vinyl pressing of the OST.
Okay I can't believe this actually turned out to be good! I saw the trailer and thought it looked like a total joke but now I'm intrigued?? Might wait for streaming though, not sure I can handle heavy jump scares in a dark theatre 🙈
With this and Barbarian coming out so close together it was a nice beginning to spoopy season.
Pearl is good as well.
@@A_CZcams_Commenter I’ve only seen X but Pearl does look good.
Skip this and watch Barbarian: it's 100% better.
Spoopy sounds pretty spoopy.
@@pegacorn13 100% idk about that
I was listening while drawing and just so happened to look up at the screen right when the person was behind your car. You got me, I jumped 😂 I thought this movie was going to be an easy pass, but now you've got me intrigued. Thanks for the review, as always! :)
haha so glad i got your attention, i hope you like it!
I saw that the main actress is Kevin Bacon's daughter, which is pretty cool. I didn't think this movie looked that good and was shocked that it was a Rated R movie but I keep hearing nothing but good things. I'm happy people are enjoying it! I may have to check it out!
Saw it last night and had a great time with it. I honestly didn't expect it to be so sinister and scary so was really pleasantly surprised. I think because it's initially being compared to Thruth Or Dare it benefits the film because i wasnt expecting much. It's nice to be pleasantly surprised. Some of those jump scares really got me good.haha The last 15 odd minutes was intense city with some amazing practical effects.
Absolutely recommend it. \m/
The SCORE! Kyle Gallner! I saw this yesterday with my bestie and we left the cinema so, so happy 😅 Really wasn't expecting much but was super pleasantly surprised, this film has jump scares that really worked on me which is not an easy task! Beautifully shot and such a great ending, loved it.
That 6:05 freaked the crap out of me! 😄
Great video as always. Not sure the movie will be for me since I'm not the biggest jump scares fan, but I will definitely check it out!
I know this movie is gonna be so much fun to watch with friends, can’t wait to go watch this
Emma why you gave me a heart attack!? 😬 6:07
Love your sweater!!! Huge sleeves 😍
there is a study that says that pink is a calming color. its pretty common that they use this color in psychiatric wards.
also blue calls to mind feelings of calmness aswell as stability and security.
in marketing and branding blue is often used to suggest competence, stability and trustworthiness.
As the Stress and desperation in rose increases, the colors that symbolize above mentioned, start to fade.
thats how i see it. :)
I am fresh off of playing The Mortuary Assistant, so see your personal jump scare, Emma, I screamed LOL I love it tho, and I love that I've heard good things about this movie. Thanks to your review, this is my most anticipated movie of the year. I can't wait to see it. Thank you for the spoiler free review.
haha no problem KG
I saw a screening and holy shit, the trailers did not give this movie justice. But that is for the better, Emma’s expectations before going in were the same as mine, but audiences going in expecting a blumhouse popcorn flick like Truth or Dare, Countdown, or Ouija will instead get a much more memorable and terrifying experience. It’s not going to revolutionize curse horror but i would say its probably just as scary as It Follows and Pulse, it’s definitely up there for me. Great video Emma, i was just as surprised!
I finally watched Smile (I know I’m late to the party 😊) and really really enjoyed it! I was NOT expecting the birthday “present”! I know I should have, but just didn’t 🤷🏼♀️. It was very well done, I thought. Especially in that you couldn’t tell what was her life and what was going on inside her. I didn’t find the jump scares particularly scary, although I really enjoyed the makeup effects/prosthetics/gore. And you were exactly correct about the colorization!! I thought pink was an interesting choice for the psych ward! I’d never seen that color in 37 years of nursing. 😂 And the ENDING WAS FABULOUS!!!! For the sake of spoilers, I won’t go into it, but it got me. Bad. Elation to terror in less than two minutes! Peaks and lows 😉 Thanks for the recommendation, as always ❤
This movie had some Ari Aster's cinematographic vibe to it especially with the rotating camera style filming and OST, I saw this movie and thought it was surprisingly good!
"I love jumpin' around the cinema!" Well I'd heard someone else talking about this movie Emma and they didn't seem thrilled. But if you're jumpin' around the cinema? Well my dear that's good enough for me. Now if it and Barbarian would just show up in this country (Georgia, not the US state!), I'd be first in line.
Thanks again!
PS do I detect a very slight bit of digital trickery in your smile?
Hey! Been following your channel for some time now and I wanted to let you know that I subscribed to your channel because I LOVE horror films as well. Also I come here when I can't make up my mind as what to watch. Thank you for your content.
NOW about the movie. I went to see it yesterday. Went to a matinee as well. I thought it was so good. Really eerie and just creepy. The jump scare scenes had me on the edge of my seat! Such a fun and well thought movie. I HOPE they have a sequel to this.
I loved this movie! I did not expect to enjoy all of the Jump scares. They were so creative and effective! I agree it felt like it follows. I think it felt more like it follows and the ring.
i just got home from seeing it & saw this :) i loved it honestly (aside from the jump scares which got me every time lol) but im really shocked with how good it was + the acting?? incredible :)
agreed! glad you enjoyed it!
I had goosebumps throughout this whole flick.
The best part of this review was your honest excitement while giving it.
I was curious about the movie and got more interested when seeing your spoiler free review. I then checked trigger-warnings on “Does The Dog Die?” (as I’ve learnt to do now to enjoy horror without it messing me up too bad) and I won’t see it in cinema. Maybe on streaming, but probably with a friend who’s into horror.

I just can’t handle bad stuff happening to cats. There are only 2 movies where I can handle it and that’s the 1989’s “Pet Sematary”, because I’ve read the book and it’s not very graphic, and “Re-Animator” because it looks so extremely fake.
You know I enjoyed this one Emma. Decent acting from the Sosie Bacon, effective jump-scares, and that ending was something else.
I’m looking forward to watching it now that I’ve read most of the comments
Just saw tonight in theatre. Very unique concept and acting of Sosie Bacon was mind blowing. Not boring at all and the ending is spine chilling.
After Barbarian, this will be another treat!
It was hard to focus on your review when I was looking for the next spooky Emma spotting lol. Loved it.
Emma kept saying about the lead character that "she is a Dr" but she is a actually a PhD Psychologist and not a medical Dr. We just call them Psychologist here in the UK and we only call medical physicians as Dr.
I wasn't even gonna see this one but you changed my mind. The power of Emma 💖💙
To be honest the trailers kind of turned me away for some reason (thinking oh it’s one of those movies that just plays all the best parts in the trailer 🤷🏻♀️) but to my surprise it’s getting lot of good reviews so I might check it out 🙂
Very surprised how well this film has been praised, after seeing the trailer in the summer I thought it was just going to be a cheap jump scare type but looking forward to watching hopefully soon!
You scared me so much when you appeared smiling at the back of the car! I was more listening than watching, and when I saw that person smiling in the back I had to stop the video haha
Going to see it Tonight!!!
Thanks for the Review as Always!!! You are my go to for trustworthiness and I’m sooo glad you liked this one!!! ❤
I finally saw this movie and was also very surprised by just how much I enjoyed it. Some of those jump scares got me good and it had a good amount of creepy visuals as well in the silence that left their mark. I didn’t notice the blue and pink other than the pink walls at the hospital but it is interesting as the pain chart seen on the wall has the blue smiley face for “no pain” and I believe the pink face is for “unbearable/unimaginable pain”
The jump scare in this video really scared me LOL(the girl in the background). Thanks for the review. I'm surprised that this movie actually sounds good. I thought it was gonna bad. Seems like the last half of the year is actually good for horror movies.
Great review Emma! Seemed like your friend was happy with the movie also; I will have to check it out.
hope you like it Megan!
I re-watched this again last night on Prime. That damn house alarm jump scare got me really good!
Look up the color Baker Miller pink. The history of the shade might inform the directors use of color🎀💕✨
thanks for the review emma
Emma, I love it when you take us with you. This is your forte, you are in your zone here.
Thanks David!
Your smile on the thumbnail is spot on.
Love the spooky edits! Can’t wait to see this!
Not me shitting myself when you popped up in the back 😂 holy hell
The pink and blue might be from the FACES pain assessment scale (on the walk in the doctor's office), which is a real thing.
Wow this made me excited! I will be honest I wasn’t planning on making a trip to the theatre for this one, and thought it seemed like it would be pretty meh. Seeing you light up while talking about it made me change my mind though, for sure 😊
Not me that jumped when you popped up behind the car! 😂
I'm so excited for this movie! I guess I'm 1 of the very few that actually like Truth or Dare, so as soon as I saw the smile I was in 100%.
Your jumper/sweater is so pretty.
Ppl were saying how they were not excited for this movie and how it was prolly gonna be another "Truth or Dare" but now ppl are really liking it.
i was debating whether or not to see this in theaters but this totally sold me. huge fan of jumpscare horror where jumpscares are utilized well so sounds like it's for me
I think you will like it then!
I enjoyed this one, had an interesting style, and once again I gotta shout out that music score. So great and creepy! Can’t wait to add that to my soundtrack collection, I’m a big fan of the composer and have been waiting for him to do a full on horror and he did not disappoint!
06:08 you got me sooooo good! Loved it!
:D
Thanks!
I felt like this was a mix of It Follows and The Ring.
I just happened to pause it when the other Emma appeared behind the car. Nice editing!
at 6:10 you got me there... haha so well done!
Haha the pop up smile behind your car scared me!! Lol.
that sweater is incredible.
(still listening to the review, but REALLY dig that sweater! lol)
I need to see this one. Thanks for a great review, with a little extra flair.
Yes! Immediately noticed how colors are used and are very intentional in this movie. I needed to know more. Joel was in a dull green most of the time. Maybe that could mean he felt more grounding as a character? I kinda need to watch this movie again.
I just finished this movie today and it terrified me! It’s one of the scariest movies I’ve seen in a long time. The jump scares were done incredible and I absolutely loved the score. Omg yes I cannot unsee the colors in it now that you’ve pointed it out!
Glad to see you liked it. Here in Sweden Smile has got some really bad reviews, so I was hesitant to see it in the cinema. But now I´m definitely going to - with friends and popcorn. :)
😂 The popping up behind your car scene was a nice touch!
I just finished watching Smile and I chose to watch it at work, I work in mental health... good job Brooke
Yay new spooky video!
Lmaooo having seen the movie, I was just giggling when you were doing the explanations in the beginning because I knew you didn’t know what you were in for 😂
That thumbnail may haunt my nightmares now
THAT WAS FUCKING GENIUUUUUUS!!!!!! not talking about the movie, and you already know what i was referring to. it actually startled me a bit!!!!
(6:05)
nahhh my soul left my body when i saw you pop up in the back 😭
hahaha
I’ll be watching this based on your color theory alone. Awesome.
The smiles in this movie are beautiful.
Can't wait to see this; pre-ordered on iTunes.
“Laura Hasn’t Slept” is “Smiles” short film! Has the same Australian actress who plays the first lady to … smile! Haha. I would definitely watch it if you can find it!
I can honestly say that this movie review video creeped me out more than any horror movie I've seen lately. Something about seeing the creepy element pop up where it doesn't belong and you're not expecting it makes it even more creepy. Like Three Men and a Baby, before HD was a thing.
I'm going Sunday, can't wait!!😀😀
I really exited waiting for this movie, and probably I my excitement will never fulfil completely, cuz' the only theater near me decide to drop this movie away. Also it's was so...infuriating knowing that in here (Indonesian) the movie actually realise two days early on September 28th. Ah...I guess my only option is to wait for streaming.
Also... BTW I just need to point this out, you said when you see the blue, you can unsee it. I can probably get that, considering you also wearing a blue shirt. Love you review as always
It scared me. And I never get scared from movies. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think a movie would scare me like when I was a kid. The score is phenomenal. I decided to listen to it while I went for a night walk after I saw the movie and I had to shut it off. It was too terrifying. Especially the track “Happy Birthday.” Super creepy and avant-garde. The fact that it slowly fades in is like nightmare fuel to me. Shadowy figures that slowly approach is a personal phobia of mine and there’s a lot of it in this movie. Well, maybe not approaching figures specifically but there a lot of this anticipation of a scare that you know is coming or likely coming. Like when they have a close up of one character’s face and they just kind of linger there, making you wait for that smile to slowly form. Goosebumps. But ya. The sound design is wonderful. I like how the score takes up the soundscape too, using the surround speakers. There’s some voices in the parts of the score and the surround speakers give them direction. The voices sounded like they were coming from the audience. I really dug the weird artsy vibe of the movie and score.
spot on review
i watched this and barbarian in the same week and i was honestly so surprised that i was more scared/interested by smile than barbarian. this very pleasantly surprised me and might be one of my favourite horrors of the year??? which i truly, truly was not expecting since i’m not a huge fan of “popcorn” horror. caitlin stasey was truly haunting and gave me goosebumps. ALSO (and maybe spoiler) it reminded me so much of the ring ESPECIALLY with that jump scare when she’s speaking to the widow of on of the “smile” victims and she is talking about identifying his body.
Looking forward to seeing the film! I was a little worried when i saw the first teaser. But i trust your personal score you have never led me to see something i didnt enjoy
Did u like it?
@@theminecommanders8013 i Did. Was a fun film
I just watched it, and I agree with your review Emma. In this film, I really loved the jump scares. They were good. Smile is definitely in my top of 2022 best horror movies so far😂
Also! I’m not sure if you’ll answer, but I’m planning on seeing this tonight & I haven’t been able to find any trigger warnings posted online just yet. I’m sensitive to certain types of gore, so does there happen to be any eye trauma in the film? Just curious! Excited to see this!
Not much gore at all. It's slow burn horror, but atmospheric and creepy.
@@Johnnyiswhere Thank you!!
Really hype for this now! Very very good review thank you Emma!!
hope you enjoy!
video posted an hour before my session starts, loved it 😂🥳❤️
Pretty pumped to see this
I luv Caitlin Stasey Claire in "Please like me" and Only just realised she is in this watching this video!! Can't wait to see it ❤️ luv from the UK x
