Aussie friends! The film is on Paramount Plus!!! Woooo! Check it out.... if ya wanna! 🙈
What other movies is this similar to, since you gave it a 4/10 for originality? I thought it was actually pretty original. I mean Orphan is the only thing I can think of, and that is a very different movie. I would love to watch more movies like this, it was so well executed.
Yes I saw that randomly on the weekend and was ecstatic (even though I ended up hating it lol)
You said slow ride :D this movie was acted in real time. I couldn't watch 10 minutes of it.
WOW! Just finished. Definitely good but I can not watch this again.
@@boogieray9 Congratulations :D This movie has it's own atmosphere.
I've seen some comments about the main characters being useless. As a Norwegian, I think this film can be brutally hilarious if you're aware of certain Scandinavian stereotypes. I believe director Tafdrup had a thing or two to say about it, and how ineffective our overdone politeness can be given certain situations.
I agree. I found myself wondering if that might actually be the whole point of the movie.
Dude was able to back twice for a fking stuffed rabbit, but he Just accepted his "fate" butt naked and did no shit in the car.
I am soooooo glad you explained that. As a Brazilian and someone who’s always doubting others and very passive aggressive I can say it’s hard to relate to those people
@@shirlene2911 Precisely. This could NEVER have been made outside of Denmark (+ Norway and Sweden) because of our cultural mindset. It's no wonder the movie pisses off people really.
That's actually the whole point of the movie 💀😅
As a parent, the parents of Agnes continually made decisions that were naive and infuriating. We all need to be more vigilant nowadays!
You don't need to do anything lol. This movie is literally made to perputate the racist rhetoric going around in Denmark about not "trusting foreigners" which is why they randomly had an arab involved for literally no reason at all. The filmmaker himself is a conservative lmao...
@CWS and TKP 66-02 Hi, What films do you feel it ripped off, I'd definitely be interested in some recommendations
So true they say the red flag at the beginning and still ignored them to the point they almost escaped and still went back.
I know I am late to this conversation but I just watched this and cannot even begin to fathom making those choices myself. I have a son and he is also very intuitive, even if I did not notice, he would. I guess what I am trying to say is, yes, let us all be very clear with our kids and not just inform them so they can be aware but as parents, we need to look at the worst case scenario, nothing is an overaction when it comes to our kids.
I kept thinking the danish guy was somehow attracted to the dutch one.
Wow!! That was horribly uncomfortable. I would love a “Spoiler” video to vent about how depressed/angry I am after watching that.
It definitely made me angry!
**SPOILERS**
I was absolutely disgusted at how the couple didn't try to defend themselves or put up any sort of fight, especially in the car at the end, or after they were taken to the isolated area. The man literally just sat and cried in the passenger seat while his daughter was maimed and his wife held down. I could go on and on. I suppose it would really have to be ingrained in one's psyche not to do violence to others even when they are threatening your life and the lives of your loved ones. Regardless, in spite of what happened to them, I hated them for not fighting back, especially considering the fact that their assailants didn't even have any weapons! But who needs weapons when you've a weak, spineless, cowardly couple like this. They were willing to leave when they didn't like the behavior of their hosts, so why the hell wouldn't they kick it up a notch when their actual lives are in jeopardy?!?
@@zukini8763 I totally agree!! I was screaming at the screen.
I wanted to fuck up that father so bad,he was just too fucking nice and soft, leaning on his wife whole time.Had he stood up,this shit would be different.Great psychological horror 9/10
@Mariana D'Amelio Yeah I would be biting and eye poking. Someone should a reaction video showing how they would fight back!
'Why do I torture myself?' was my exact reaction to watching this too. I don't know why I appreciate (rather than enjoy) films like Speak No Evil, but I really do. I was riddled with anxiety the whole film and felt like I had been punched in the stomach when it was finished. Amazing film if you appreciate movies that affect you. When I watch a comedy, I want to laugh. When I watch a horror-thriller, I want to feel it.
Q: Why do you torture yourself?
A: Because you let me...
Just watched! It gave me the same feeling I had when watching Eden Lake - disturbed, anxious and a little depressed 😆 No wonder you needed a wine! 🍷Going on holiday next week and will not be making any friends 🙅🏻♀️ x
😂😂
I’m never talking to a stranger ever again!!!!😂
That's why Funny Games and Eden Lake has a permanent spot in my top 30 favourite films of all time. I've never experienced dread during a film like that. This film messed with me but it was more angering, while the prior films were actually well written, executed and completely miserable lol.
Except Eden Lake didn't have a point... Speak no Evil had one
I was waiting for self-preservation to kick in. It was agony. The rude family was trampling all over boundaries that I would never cross and I have never had crossed by another person. And every time, they would take it one step further. Noooooo! It was bleak, like the Koko di Koko da time loop. I felt like the family was caught in a circle of hell, where they were compelled to be polite and take the high road. This movie made me so glad I know how to be a b**ch as needed. Everyone should have that tool in their belt cuz folks are crazy!
Do you think they would have killed them regardless? There were so many pictures on the wall, so I guess it would have been only a matter of time.
Yup same. Glad I can be assertive and abrasive when necessary.
I can believe some people could lack even the instinct for self preservation but when their daughter is involved and still nothing I mean come on.
I agree with the Koko Di Koko Da comparison. Both films really got under my skin.
I was yelling at my screen so many times. That Abel kid was the first red flag for me. But everything else was just so unnerving to watch I mean they so blatantly disrespected their so called guests, and they even felt bad for trying to leave? Come on.
"Gaslight" sums this up! Disturbed me to my core. Love the film and really enjoyed when they focused on the social awkwardness (those parts reminded me of All My Friends Hate Me), but it takes a turn in the last act. Even though I loved it, I think it's a one-time watch here. I also love how they addressed language in the film, too; English between both couples, talking in their respective native languages behind the others' back (subtitle-less for the Dutch couple, which reminded me of Watcher).
Yes! We definitely need a 'dark and disturbing' list. Can't wait to see this movie, thanks for the review. ; -)
🍿🍷🍷🍷🍷
Thanks MM!
I'll start.... Excision needs to be on that list!
I just watched this and I am genuinely in shock. I wasn’t expecting what happened at all. Absolutely terrifying.
🙈🙈🙈
@@spookyastronauts I never thought I’d be scared of a certain body part but here we are ✨
I wasn’t expecting it either!!!😮
Yeah I watched a lot of fucked up movies. And this gave me super anxiety.
@@TheMercyTrials I have seen Salo, Cannibal holocast and all. Wasnt the boy called Abel?
My reaction when I finished watching this was the same as yours haha. So brutal. I couldn't stop talking to the screen, GET THE F OUT OF THAT HOUSE! 😣
watch last house on the left from the 70s it's more disturbing 😊
I know right!!!
I think I literally almost screamed GOD DAAAAAAAAAAAMNIT AGNES
They were spineless they abandoned their boundaries for what? To be polite? I just dont understand how you can go from being completely disrespected and on edge to cutting to the next activity with every smiling like it didnt happen? Are they that desperate for a social life?
Yeah this movie made me wanna go straight savage!
To me the peaceful music was symbolic of the point(s) of no return where every polite choice led them deeper into danger. It was like a sad acceptance of their unchangeable fate due to their desire to be nice.
Peaceful music ? 👀
“Idk why I do this to myself”- exactly what I keep think every time I’m home alone at night watching some disturbing video on youtube knowing it will freak me out.
The only thing I can think of with the music choices especially at the end of the film is maybe it was to make those end moments really stick with you as an audience. We’ve seen so much horror with the “scary” music during those really disturbing moments, but having this soft soothing music immediately gets your attention and also make those images really stick with you.
Thank you for doing this video! Needed people to talk about it with.
I also felt like it had holes but the more I think about all the little details the more I feel I understand, can’t stop thinking of this movie. Also love how the opening shot and the end shot go together so perfectly 🎥
We definitely need a "Top 25 Best Dark Cinema"
Love and Support from Singapore sincerely, Christopher Yew Xuan
I’d love a list of most disturbing/darkest films you’ve seen!
Yikes! You bloody well nailed this one with your review. Even though you warned us, the ending subverted my expectations. I was sure it was going to go a different way but boy was I wrong! That thunder was indeed an ominous omen for what was to come. This one was darker than most have the guts to be. Thanks for your insightful review. Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.
Just checked this movie out and it’s definitely disturbing without a happy ending, hug your kids after this!!!
I just paused your video to watch it and oh my goodness the fear the whole film gave me was on a whole other level, you sympathize so much more with the couples in films like this rather than a basic Hostel gore film, it just felt so real life if that makes sense! I loved it though! When the guy said "because you let me" at the end gave me CHILLS like nothing else, the music gives you SO much anxiety too it's so daunting!
As a belgian person who speaks dutch as my primary language, it's gonna be interesting to watch this. I wish i could turn off understanding the dutch, because that would add to the experience of seeing it through the eyes of the Danes. Also, when you said that it was about a dutch and danish family, i immediately figured it'd mostly be in English. Because that's how scandinavians and dutch people communicate. Neither of us dub movies in our own language, so we all tend to be very good at english. So that makes a lot of sense :)
As an Irish American, i am going to drink a lot of beer.
@@dragongeraldb As a British-American, I'm gonna take some crappy ecstasy pills
Wat valt er te begrijpen aan de "Nederlanders"? Alsof je met deze film een realistisch beeld zou krijgen van hoe mensen in Nederland ontvangen worden of hoe onze cultuur is.
Their English was so good even this American (Texan) could understand. 😊
@@memmem77 ik begrijp niet goed wat je bedoelt? Het gaat gewoon over een nederlandse familie, niemand zegt dat iedereen in Nederland daarom zo is.
This movie…… Good Lord. As you watch you start to think, “ahhh, I see what they’re doing here”, then I check the remaining time and think this is going to be a quick character arch with only 10mins remaining. Then….. the end comes and I’m like holy shit…. That line “because you let me” will stick with most of us that watch this. We all like to think “I’d never let this happen”. I 100% believe as a dad I’d never. For starters, (slight spoiler) I ain’t going back for that damn stuffed bunny rabbit. Secondly, I’ve been punched in the face a few times and I’ve punched back every single time, it’s been awhile, but I’d be ready.
I was yelling “hit that asshole back”. It was so frustrating but I think that poor guy thought there was still some hope.
F me. I would have made my husband go back for the bunny for sure!
Basically, they wanted to be nice from the moment they accepted the invitation, all the way up to just waiting to be stoned to death with plenty of opportunity to run. For me personally, after standing on the balcony in Italy and seeing that guy staring at me, I would have never interacted with him again. That's enough of a red flag to end our relationship before it started.
I just watched this. Wow! So many cringy moments. The dad going back for the bunny was so relatable. My husband has done that many times for our daughter’s favorite blanket. 🤦🏻♀️ The things we do for our children. Ugh. I had to drink wine to get through it too.I hated the ending!!!
Only horror fans can watch something like this then smile at how messed up the experience was. 😀🎃
Smile Wtf I feel bad for that poor little girl 😞
@@soorajunni436 me too. I wanted to cry.
@@soorajunni436 SPOILERS
She cant look at the bottom of her feet to see a stuff animal or remember playing with it and dropping it while in the car? She literally got her whole family killed. This movie would have ended in the 2nd act if it wasnt for the dad turning the car around for a toy like your kid wouldn't get over it eventually. smh
@@charlottesmoviephile8924 it's the dad's fault 😌
Remember in the beginning villian told him he was brave to go back to get the toy back for her..
omg just finished it 2 minutes - IN SHOCK - before watching this review , you mention anxiety and awkwardness - and i was was yelling the screening saying omg "AWKWARD!" especially dancing in the bar and getting the visitor to pay for their meals and bumping and grinding with his wife in front of the guests! 10/10 for me kept me on the edge when i saw the red flags from the start ! thanks for reccomending
The defining horror movie of our current predicament. An audacious piece of cinema that places a mirror in front of all of us. Loved how uncomfortable it made me. Brilliant.
Great review Emma! Watched this one as a Sundance screening earlier this year, glad to see it's finally getting some love! Anxiety-inducing is a great way to describe it, the movie had me sucked in all the way through, and it did a really good job putting me in the character's shoes. As far as disturbing cinema goes, it really scratched an itch for me, and I feel like we hardly get movies that are simultaneously this disturbing and emotionally effective. Gave me lots of mother! and Antichrist vibes
I don’t know if anyone picked up on a tiny detail: In the beginning, Bjorn went back to find his daughter’s rabbit. He found it and Patrick (the ass hole I wanted to kill after the movie ended) congratulates him on his heroism for going back. Talk about foreshadowing. This exact thing happens again when they initially try to leave. They return for the stuffed animal but with unpleasant consequences: there is no escape.
Yes!!!! 🙌🏻
Oooh you’re good!
That and at the beginning when he took the chair that was clearly being used by Bjorn. That's right when he knew he was a weak man. Too nice and too polite.
I just watched this film for the first time, and as a dane myself I could relate to so many of the awkward situations. Especially when I go to places like the U.S. In Denmark most people don't really seek conversations, they usually avoid them at all cost, or only answer to not seem rude. We have this unspoken rule about being polite even in situations where you feel uncomfortable. In the beginning where Patrick (the dutch guy) asks if he can use the chair, you can (or at least I could) clearly see that Bjørn ( the danish man) is hestitant as to give it to him, because his daughter is using the chair, but because she's in the water at that moment, he doesn't want to seem rude, so he'll rather be a little uncomfortable via being 3 people using two chairs, than not giving up a chair that isn't being used at the moment. The same goes for when Patrick offers (I'd rather say forces) the meat to Louise. Bjørn tells her to "just take a small bite" as to not seem disrespectfull to the family who made them a nice meal. Same goes for when Bjørn ends up paying for the expensive meal at the restaurant. He doesn't want to come off as rude or disrespectful. And with Louise (the danish mom) she speaks her mind when her line is crossed big time, but because she isn't backed up by her husband, she doesn't want to seem crazy and overreacting so she retaliates. All in all this movie scares me more than a lot of other horror movies i've watched, because the way that I've been raised as a dane (with the unspoken societal politeness) makes me question when I would have stood my ground, especially when things started getting scary. And for everyone whose mad they didn't fight back at the end. Freezing up is a trauma responds, especially when you either know the dutch guys have got the balls to fight and you're used fleeing from every fight, coming your way. Most danes are way too good at shying away from conflict, so I believe a lot of danish people would freeze up in situations like this, just as the danish couple did.
Been waiting for your video on this one! I woke up this morning and saw that it hit Shudder, and immediately rewatched it in anticipation of this video. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!!
This was a interesting movie. Mainly because i myself am Dutch and from the South. So for me the Dutch was very easy to understand. As well as the english. The Danish not so much. The title sounds familiar from American Horror movies so i kinda knew what i was in for as a Horror fan. Especially from the Psychological kind. But what sticks with me the most about this movie is not the scare tactics or meddling with the child of someone else wich i admit annoyed me to no end. The danish were that typical nice family that most dutch families are in my experience. But in this movie The dutch were the bad guys which was a very interesting take and disturbing when it hits that close to my own region. Anyway the moment that stuck with me the most was when the Danish Husband asked why he was doing this and the reply was because they let him. No matter how messed up these two sociopaths were they are right. They had every chance to flee and even did once. Hell the Danish wife did not even want to go in the first place. So yeah you can blame the Dutch couple but that they were insane was obvious at some point. Talking about ignoring all the signs plain in your face is a understatement and then do nothing about it to prevent it. For a European Horror movie one of the best i have seen in a long time. And there are a few made in The Netherlands alone so that is saying something.
Regardless great review and goodluck in the future. The like is well deserved.
Everything that happened to them was their own fault. Literally from the very beginning. They only went on the trip because they thought it would be *impolite* to decline the invitation.
I literally JUST finished the movie and then saw you reviewed it. PERFECT TIMING. But holy shit, that was intense. So anxiety inducing and upsetting. Definitely at the top for horrors I've seen this year.
Excited to see this in theatres tonight! And I speak Dutch, so really curious to see if I’ll get something extra out of it!
Watched this the other day. The last 20 minutes will not leave my brain. My jaw literally dropped during the car scene and my hand was clasped over top of it. The music was nuts in this movie. I loved it and it actually made me laugh at the beginning because of the juxtaposition between the loud music and the serene scenic views. SPOILER ALERT. I loved the underlying emotion journey that the husband was on. His feeling of having become a cog in the wheel of modern day family life. It was really the reason they ended up staying there because he was obviously drawn to the energy of the other man. Ugh. Dude. Seriously. My brain.
Just watched it. I think your review is spot on. I thought maybe they had some of the music choices to disarm us as an audience and to make us feel safe with them at times. Especially the scene with the angelic voice music playing in the car. I did like this but of course, incredibly heavy in its content. Also, I jut watched a double feature of Pearl and X last night and I'm excited for your review for Pearl. I loved it so much.
Emma clenching her wine and pacing while watching dark cinema is like an alarm going off telling me to watch this movie. Can’t wait!
But after your “disturbing” score ngl I’m kinda scared. I’ll definitely be bringing my wine….
I went in completely blind. I was totally not expecting such a movie. It's traumatizing.
That man had so many chances to bounce, thinking back to the start of the movie, the wolf was scoping his prey from the very beginning. When he called him "brave" for going back to get the rabbit he probably was having second thoughts, but after getting to know him and seeing his inability to assert himself, he knew this was the perfect target couple, so then the invite letter was sent. Very disturbing and dark ending, not predicable at all which is pretty rare in today's horror.
You're still the best at this, Emma. Thx for what you do
I watched this movie the other day and omg it’s stuck with me. I thought it was really clever in what it was portraying as a person who can’t say no and is too polite I was disturbed lol. Great movie! Love your content 👌🏻
It was so messed up.. I loved it! Yes please do a list of dark and disturbing movies like this 😅
Hey just wanted to say I love your channel and reviews. Your opinions tend to line up with mine a lot. Keep up the awesome work!
Yes yes yes to a dark and disturbing list! I'll be adding this to my list. I hate secondhand embarrassment/cringe, but I like disturbing stuff (as you know), so I'll give it a watch.
enjoy!
the pretty calming song at the end is the same Borjn cries to at the beggining, symbolising the full cycle completed (and to be repeated).
This movie was fantastic, frustrating, and utterly compelling. Definitely makes me think about how agreeable I am, and how quiet when confronted with disrespectful behavior.
I watched this while fighting internal infection and I actually liked it , it makes me wonder who these people are and whos supporting their crime but sometimes I like it with little information and just enjoy the slowburn dark cinema.
I have to watch this! Love the dark and disturbing stuff and I would love to see a list with that kind of tips. I recently watched The Occupant after your recommendation and it was so much darker than I could have imagined. I believe you called it anti-Amelie, witch was a very accurate description. 😆
haha yessss! thats a great one!
Dark cinema Is my favorite. You always have the best reviews and recommendations. I would love to see your top 25 list in this genre.
Finally watched this last night, been excited for this one for awhile, being a fan of this kinda film.
Really enjoyed it! In a disturbing way of course 😂 definitely anexity driven, and uncomfortable to watch. Didn't expect the brutal ending 😳
I'm going to Holland next month, definitely not making new friends 😂
Definitely will give this one a watch! You describe my favorite type of film so well with ‘spooky cinema’.
Great review Emma! This movie really made me want to take a shower IMMEDIATELY after watching. So unbelievably disturbing but I do appreciate that the movie “goes there.” It reminded me a bit of Calibre in that you just can’t believe the movie can elicit so much anxiety! This is not gonna be for everyone but I’m glad I saw it (just once)!
I guess I’ve been warned. Going to watch this today.
Could the music be kind of a cognitive dissonance kind of thing? Calm music while something uncomfortable is happening? Just a guess.
Thanks for another great post
I was so excited about this one but now I'm kinda worried because you compared it to Funny Games, and that movie is like torture to me. I just don't enjoy watching a family get tortured by annoying characters, and not getting a single glimpse of hope.
But I'm gonna be brave 😂
Same page!
I’m Dutch. I really liked it. The guy who played the psycho is one of our best actors Fedja van Huêt and I really thought he was very creepy. His wife in the movie is his real wife btw. It truly has a lot of Dutch references that are all accurate and I was impressed by that since the maker is Danish. I think he maybe had the actors have influence on the script. I hear that it’s a parody on Danish politeness and it can also be seen as a parody on the lack of Dutch politeness. I thought the acting overall was very good. SPOILERS I think the psycho couple prayed on people who were very complying and insecure and the Danish husband fit the bill. The ending where they get stoned was a bit over the top but imo when you see it as a slightly surreal dark fairy tale it can work. The thing that bothered me most is that the psycho couple did this with about 100 other couples and just send post cards with the address. I mean people notice when persons are missing? It’s pretty simple to track them down? Did I miss something or am I supposed to suspend my disbelief? Anyway. The acting, cinematography and the first hour is top notch imo. So I really liked it. It does however feel it could be better if the script made a little more sense.
I really appreciate your recommendation Emma I never new about this movie thank you so much that why I love your channel
Definitely my favorite movie of 2022 (measured on my 'Need to talk about this movie with everyone' rating). Saw it at Fantasia this summer and while we were in a small room (400ish) it was packed and you could hear a pin drop throughout the whole experience. People walked out of the room in silence (very unusual for such a Movie fest crowd) and it took a solid 2 minutes before people got back to their senses and debriefed :) To me that's a great measure of how well the movie worked. Beyond the typical dread found in similar movies this one did something quite unique (and that's why you should avoid spoilers) - it drummed up the cringe and uneasiness to a ridiculous level and left very little breadcrumbs along to the way to indicate things would eventually unravel THAT much. You begin the movie expecting things to go wrong but after a while you almost accept that you might just be watching a dark satirical comedy that will have a 'shocking ending' (everyone mentioned it) but it won't be 'that bad' - the movie's vibe doesn't put you in that mindset at all. A bit like why Audition's final scene is so impactful because of the mundane movie that proceeded it. It's no torture porn, no long and slowly worsening situations for the characters - it hints at the possibility of this but the characters never truly face danger until the very end - as a spectator we go from feeling like the Dutch family, anxious/uneasy and eventually 'almost' flip our sentiment in favor of the Norwegian family (after all they make valid points for the most part, with a few exceptions) - could it just be that we are judgemental a*holes ? Of course not, deep down we know this but if you are willing to suspend disbelief a tiny bit and accept the cultural differences (I'm Canadian and while we are known to be apologetic I hope I would have walked out of there at some point ;)) and well simply the fact that it's a movie, you'll drop your guard at least a little bit and that will make the movie Grand. You too will have been a bit gullible and like the protagonist pay for it in someway. Brilliant movie
Perfect description. Agree with all of it
At one point I literally thought that the horror aspect of the movie was the second hand embarrassment it gave me and how uncomfortable it made me because that was also painful to watch 🤣
I've just seen the film and am in awe of the brutal and pure evil that was displayed in it.
I knew how the story was going to end from the get go but wasn't ready for the way it was executed.
As for the dissonance of the music in regards to the scenes...
I think that the ominous and dark music plays in the beginning or when the family is doing daily activities because it's a sign for the public that they are going to end up in a bad place and there's sadly no hope for them.
On the other hand, when we hear calm music while we see them talking to the other family in the italian restaurant etc. it is a display of how they are feeling - unaware of the death wish that they are signing.
I like how you include the dog finding the perfect spot to lay down lol, so cute! I am about to watch this movie, and I'm excited! I personally had a lot of issues with staying polite in the face of danger so the premise really spoke to me lol.
Oooo, hearing your take on this one makes me think I should definitely watch it, but I'll have to prep first! Thanks, as always!
Thank you for actually being spoiler free, been accidentally spoiled more times than I can count.
Yes! Please give us your disturbing content list, definitely love to see it. Love dark cinema
OMG Emma, pleeeese do a list of your top Dark Cinema movies. It would be greatly appreciated, my friend. I have Shudder, so I'm going to check this film out, this weekend. Give Gromit some belly rubs from me and thanks for the review, my fellow weirdo 😊
Bring on the disturbing content list!
Thanks for the review, I will give this a shot this weekend!
As a Mexican I can't relate with the attitude of the main characters, I was so frustrated for all the red flags screaming all the time and the fact that the father was so innocent, harmless and weak was shocking, that is super strange in my culture, that a guy without weapons, dominated them like that, I don't know maybe it was just this guy in specific.
Apparently Gromit wanted film time too 😃😍 Didn't mind the very slow burn, cause it felt real, most of us can relate being in their shoes. Although staying with them not happening, unless we've been friends a long time of course. We know the horrid twistyness was coming by the end, and jesus was it a whopper of a gut hit. Won't see it again unless with thee uninitiated, and as always posts appreciated #spookyastronauts
Give Gromit a hug for me. I love him. He’s so cute!
Please do a video on recommendations for movies that are dark and make a viewer squirm. I am a huge fan of dark cinema as well and people think I'm weird but I love it. So I'm definitely on board with knowing what films you recommend.
I just watched this movie on Shudder in Canada. I wasn't sure what to think at first. I enjoyed the watch. I'm probably not the only one who yelled at the screen at the little girl in the middle of the film.
I agree that there were some holes and missing parts of the film, but especially the female actors were fantastic. It is hard to think that people would make some decisions that they did. As a Finnish person, I do understand "gotta be polite", but there could have been a little less politeness from the Danish couple haha.
I thought I got through the movie unscathed, until I started explaining it to my wife who doesn't watch horror movies, but enjoys hearing about them. I had that final song playing through my head and certain things really stuck with me.
For me I love dark disturbing psychological films. I would love to see a list of disturbing films!
The choice of using what I would call jarring music during calm parts of the film and then calm music during the disturbing parts of the film was a very interesting choice, I agree. I think it's to kind of just put you in that uncomfortable space so you don't really know what's happening and it kind of starts that unnerving feeling from the very beginning.
It was by no means a perfect film but it was pretty good, and I'd probably overall give it a 7 out of 10.
Great review! I just watched the movie and I agree. I really enjoyed it but some parts were missing to make it feel like the family was making believable choices. Shudder is really on a roll lately!
I mean I see why they put every anxiety-inducing & cringy-worthy situation that ever existed in the universe ( along with the stupidest characters my eyeballs had ever witnessed !!! ) under two hours of film and I respect it as an artistic choice to have fun making the audience as uncomfortable as possible and hate you by the end of it. But ugggh I really struggled to see what the story is trying to say. I don't know, when I watch a Gaspar Noé film for example and it makes me really uncomfortable, i feel like there is always a point to it and it's really effective ? This felt like making you uneasy just for the fun of it without actually saying something interesting with it. Great review !!!
I watched and i cant believe. This movie is the best. Its a mirror of our world people. please everyone raise their voices to everything that does not contribute to life and does not take care of life. Hi from TURKIYE.
Im so glad you could review this
Ahhhh! Thanks can’t wait and I will make sure to have my dog and my wine handy!
i truly didn't expect this to be so dark and your initial reaction after watching resonates with me sooooo much lol
The lack of fight back was so frustrating to watch!
I never know what to think when Emma starts laughing as soon as the movie is done! 😄
Hahaha
The drive up is lots like the Shinning, but the scenes of the sand pit I found quite surreal. The Dutch husband is so glib, sociopathic, too good to be true, total red flags, but the Danes are not street smart, I thought that in the end he'd remember the primal scream exercise & summon up some brute strength, but noooo.
A huge lesson I took from this movie was about following one’s gut. Especially as a parent. Being told “be polite” ad nauseum is really toxic advice. If your gut tells you something’s wrong…it probably is. I hated those parents almost as much as the villains
Just finished watching this and.....OMG.... lol, I'm speechless. Love, love, LOVED it.
Yeah, this one's definitely got that brutal and unnerving Funny Games-feeling to it. I wonder what it does to Danish/Dutch relations though, heh!
As a psychotic and evil Dutch person I can say that we've stolen the little mermaid and have taken the rights of Lego as a revenge for our portrayal.
we invaded Copenhagen and won't give it back unless Dutch cheese is recognized worldwide as no. 1.
Great review Emma keep up it. Spoilers: It's a well made disturbing movie and i know characters and their actions are questionable and dumb but you do care about them and by the end feel sad, helpless and angry, ending was heartbreaking and was hard to watch, more you think about it more it haunts you, poor little Abel got the worst of it just imagine living with your parents killers and taking all there abuse for months 😔😔😥😥
I saw the “slide” clip on CZcams and it made me so anxious and nervous. Gonna watch it this weekend!
I watched this at the festival and it was quite shocking and upsetting … it was a double feature with Ressurection… so yeah
Hi there, Wow, What a great review, I might need to watch this one, I would love to watch Horror movies from another country and this one Speak No Evil I shall definitely take a good look at. I do like a good dark and disturbing film, also have they made See No Evil and Hear No Evil? I would love to know if these movies do exist. Anyway thank you for the video and Have a great day today. 😊 😊
I am dutch and didn't know they didn't add subtitles for the dutch parts of the movie in other countries. That's interesting!
I am writing this before I finish your review....because I've seen this film twice and I am on the edge of my seat for your reaction.
Thanks Emma. I would love to see you review some dark cinema films. I’m a sicko too and looking forward to watching this one
MOVIE of the YEAR for Me!
Thanks for review!
You ROCK
Loved it when I saw it back in early January at Sundance!!
New subscriber. I loved this movie so much (watched it last night). The feeling of unease and dread was really powerful. I've bookmarked Compliance to watch tonight (on your recommend as you clearly are an expert on dark cinema). Will be checking out all your other reviews on the channel (58 year old UK horror fan)
I would have never known about this movie … thx I am definitely gonna watch it
Very well-made film - it looked gorgeous. It is subtle and pretty horrifying. So sad that well-intended decisions led to such horror.
I like that your sweet dog circled from one side of the sofa to the other. What a good boy.
Finished watching this right now. I'm getting Darren Aronofsky "mother " and Lars von triers "antichrist" vibes. The third act feels like there's a biblical subtext. I can't get into it without spoilers. It's dark and brutal on there surface, and maybe I'm over reaching but I just think there's more below the surface. Yeah this one got me, I wouldn't say I was scared at all but I'm left unnerved and uneasy. I'll be thinking about this for a while.
Would love a list !!!
I think this is what I'll watch tonight after work .
Morning, Emma! Haven't seen this yet, but I have a theory on the music. You said they played ominous music before things went bad. It sounds to me like the music was another layer of mismatched awkward. Perhaps as the viewer is waiting for the danger, the tension builds with the music, and then when things start to finally go bad in the story, we get a release from the anticipation with the calm music?
Just a though.
Perhaps! Interesting theory
I saw this a couple days ago and I am still thinking about it! Wow, what a movie. I have to say it takes a bit to build the tension but when it all breaks loose it’s so worth the wait. I almost cried at the ending. That’s how wrapped up I was by then. For me ***spoiler alert *** seeing people get beaten really upsets me. If it was a chainsaw or stabbing, no worries but that looked so real. Great film.
Same here i thought they will get shot 😔😔😔
Thank you for this review! I’m about to watch it now.
Enjoy!
I just saw this film and enjoyed it immensely. To be frank, I think it could've been darker to make it better (ie. exploring certain motivations, explaining the house surrounded by a moat, etc.).
Regardless, I love your videos and appreciate your take on this one!
Oh yeah! Maybe there will be a Part 2!
I don't know what genre you can call this but I like to call it the "things that could genuinely happen" sub genre. So things like "Eden Lake".
If you have other recommendations for similar movies it would be great to get them.
