    It's very rare that I cannot finish a movie, but Nothing Bad Can Happen just creeps into your blood with dread. Every part of me just knew what was coming and I couldn't watch. It's literally like watching innocence be utterly destroyed. I guess I found my boundaries.

    Hey Emma! I am from Germany and looked up the case, "Nothing bad can happen" is based on. Many Scenes from this Movie, which i could hardly sit throgh, seem to be very accurate. The religious aspect of the story was added by the filmmaker Katrin Gebbe. The case, the Film is based on, happened around the years 2002/2003 in Udenhausen near Kassel in Germany. Werner and Michaela H. took the slightly mentally disabled Thies F. into care, took his welfare, forced him into Prostitution and abused him in many ways till he died at the age of 30. A friend of the family, who knew about the torture that was going on, testified it in court in 2007. In the articles i read, many scenes from the film were described as well to have happened in realitiy. It was an cruel cycle of abuse, in which the whole family was involved. The cruelty behind closed doors, the fear to oppose them and the ignorance of bystanders seem to be always the same dynamic. I saw some parrallels to "The woman" by Lucky Mckee as well. Sorry, if my english isn't that good 🙂 I love your channel and your recommendations a lot, all the best for you!

      For me personally I don't know if I'd use the word disturbing for Dancer in the Dark, nothing really messed up happens, but it is VERY sad. That poor woman.. really good film, though the songs are... not very well done. Not sure if that's intentional?

    Playground (aka Plac zabaw) from 2016 is another film based on true events that is upsetting and disturbing, similar to that of Nothing Bad Can Happen and Speak No Evil. Playground has an ending that will have you feeling gutted.

    • @jnc3880
      @jnc3880 Před 6 měsíci

      What’s even more disturbing is that movie is based on a true crime. What really happened was much worse. The boy was forced to eat paint and suck on batteries and then was hit over the head with a 25 pound iron block. His tiny body was discovered split in half, as he was run over by the train. @@marybaun3195

I was curious about the true story as well, since nothing on the internet explained it, until I baught the movie on DVD. this is his way of coping bc once he would let go of his beliefs, he would've been caught in this nightmare of a life. I think him still believing is kind of disturbing in its own way. It's also a way to stand up for himself firmly and going against his tormentors, which is one thing that amused me. It felt like they felt inferior to him bc he was still believing in good and had a pure heart, while life treated him poorly, probably even before he met them. I think Tore is like Alyosha from The Brothers Karamazov, where he behaves the exact same way as Jesus himself. Never behaves bad towards anybody, even on people that harm them, has an unhealthy level of understanding for people's wrongdoings and is a firm believer in not just the christian version of god, but generally in the good in humanity.

      I was thrilled to discover Emma’s work pre pandemic. She’s such a gem. I’m a bit older and have seen almost everything (on screen and in life!). This film will be with me forever. It’s utterly piercing, and it may be the most Catholic film I’ve ever seen - I know that sounds odd, but it uniquely captures the “mystery of the cross”. It’s a masterpiece, so thank you for bringing it to Emma. (Although when it ended, my first thought was- “well you can never ‘unsee’

    One of the most disturbing and terrifying ones I have ever watched was Hostel 1 and 2. What disturbed me about it was I kept wondering if there are really people somewhere who actually are doing things like this for kicks. After watching it I looked up the possibility of it and came across an interview with a guy who claimed there are. He also claimed that a similar thing called red rooms exist on the dark web. I find the most disturbing and traumatizing movies are about things that actually do or have occurred such as Dahmer, Bundy, Men Behind the Sun, Faces of Death, and one called Grim Love about that man who put an ad in a place called the cannibal cafe.

    This listing reminded me of this new movie that hasn't come out yet but had the pleasure of watching, "Stopmotion" it's devastating, and in a way, it's about leaving relationships that are draining, and left us with no freedom, but in such a twisted and dark way, and it has a lot of stop motion animation (hence the name) intertwined just like "Granny’s Dancing on the Table", thats why I feel like this would fit so well...

    I’m watching ‘Nothing Bad Can Happen Now’ ……😢
    These people are awful human beings but the tragedy is there are so many like this in real life. I’m having a visceral anger and sadness but it is well done as a film

    All good - great stuff, but Safe is a borderline perfect film. Swallow was kind of a psuedo-remake of it and while I liked that film, Safe has it beaten across the board. Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so.

    More movies I need to add to the list of disturbing movies I haven't seen. Sadly, I think I own Room on Blu Ray, but I haven't seen it. Granny's Dancing on the Table looks amazing. And on a related subject, you were SO right about When Evil Lurks. I LOVED it. Craaaaaazy movie. 😱😁

      Yeah no kidding! The only non-disturbing one he's made was The Boss of it All, a comedy that's not funny if you're not familiar with Scan culture, lol. He's my favorite director by far, but yeah...only if you like disturbing stuff!

    Although I agree with "Nothing Bad" being heart wrenching and utterly sad, the fact that his sacrifice for that family will most assuredly involve a future that will be free of their abuser, there's real hope in that. Tore's sacrifice would always be remembered by them, maybe even taken for granted occasionally, but his faith and the hope birthed because of it, would resonate in their lives in every way. Even on their worst days. Just knowing he didn't die in vain? I think there's real joy in that thought.

    After watching this, I decided to check out a film that I'd slung on my virtual to-watch list called 'Beaten To Death' as I do like a bit of Aussie goodness. Well, I can safely say that it most DEFINITELY counts as traumatising and disturbing. Absolutely nihilistic and extremely violent and from the first minute, it lets you know what sort of flick you're in for. Well made and watchable, but only for those with very strong stomachs and minds! It's what I call a total 'one and done'. You Aussies do NOT fuck around! 👿

    If you e never seen Savage Streets, I would suggest it. It’s very disturbing. I saw it when I was probably 8 at a friend’s house in the mid 80’s and I still think about it. So upsetting.
