It really helps to think of Speak No Evil as a satire of politeness. How far is the line before we stop sacrificing other’s comfort for our own? How much will we allow others to get away with to avoid ruining the vibe? As a fellow extremely passive, non-confrontational person I understand why it has people upset with the main characters, but I understand what the director/writer was saying.
The ending is really the most frustrating part of the entire movie. I really can't think of another horror movie where the characters actions are so anger inducing. At that point in the situation they were in they knew exactly what was going to happen.
@@82Jaster the movie does an excellent job at making its audience hate it. the ending it particular does this especially well because it left me conflicted in a frustrating way: do I feel bad for the people for the horrors they endured? or do I think little of them for effectively doing nothing to protect themselves or their child? I internalized it a bit afterwards and found that I was more mad at them for doing nothing than I was for their suffering. that probably says a lot about my personal character flaws, but it is how I felt.
@@IwatchTubiTrash I'm really right there with you. I was angry at them as well. I just wanted them to do something other than what they were told to do. Just try to get out of it at least. Don't let them do what they wanted.
I will say that I enjoyed the movie. Although it's certainly one of those that I never want to see again like A Serbian Film. But unlike with that, which I just don't think is a good movie, the reason why I wouldn't want to see this again is because it's so draining. It's really well done, and the acting is amazing, but it's so bleak.
@@82Jaster I both hated the movie and respected it--ended up giving it a 4/5 on Letterboxd. it definitely did its job and that was to make you angry and uncomfortable. I will never watch it again, but it will certainly leave a lasting impression and that is always commendable in my book.
@@IwatchTubiTrash *Warning spoiler talk* I don't think that it's a character flaw to want the parents to fight back at least for their daughter. If my child was crying from fear and being mutilated in front of me I would try to maul the person doing that to them. That's so instinctual to human nature. I think that's why the average person reacts with anger rather than despair watching this film.
Despite the flaws of “Don’t Worry Darling,” I know without a doubt that it will be my new comfort movie. Florence Pugh, the costumes, the midcentury decor, the Busby Berkeley style choreography and videography during the dance sequences…it really checked all of my boxes!
I’m just so sick of that twist in movies, it feels so predictable at this point 😅
you should be audition scene Pearl because 1. it's her best costume in the film 2. it's probably her most recognizable costume and 3. it's the most pivotal scene in the film!! completely shatters her psyche beyond repair.
love your vids Sarah!!
And I love the choice of red for her dress as its so distinctly different from the rest of everyone else wears
I say Pearl after she axed Mizzie (or whatever the blonde's name was). With the ax, of course.
Speak no evil kinda like a old school disturbing French movie. It’s also a lesson for you that in the face of evil you fight to the death.
I think doing Pearl’s look with the red dress and running makeup would be cool! It may be hard to find a dress that would work though
14:28 The willing-to-risk-their-lives-not-to-be-rude trope reminds me of Funny Games and that scene when the woman saw her friends on the boat and didn't say ANYTHING.
It's interesting how similar yet different Funny Games is. Funny Games is my favourite horror film yet I doubt I'll watch Speak No Evil again. Even though it was well-made I agree with the video that it became too unbelievable. In contrast, I think Funny Games does a fantastic job at isolating the family and making it feel truly impossible to escape for most of the film. Different approaches to filmmaking I guess.
The creepiest part about rewatching “Barbarian” is the floor creaking while Tess is asleep, and then she wakes up to that distant scream!
I loved speak no evil. I got mixed reviews on r/horror. But I thought it was the best thing I watched this month so far
It was so good. I think people's appreciation for it will grow over the years.
So much potential but it just turned into a shit show
I loved the director's cut of Midsommar. Midsommar (and Heriditary) is a story about a character who is in a larger story in which she is not really the main character. And I think in the director's version, you can see Dani figuring this out and it's fun to see when she decides to go all in. In both of his movies the larger story seems to be a meditation on religion and cults and I think it would be great to have a conversation with Ari Aster on what he thinks about religion.
I think is clear what he thinks… like sunny day cear skye clear…
@@heyhorinshi details!🙂
AHHH love the Taylor shout out! so happy with all the love she’s receiving after her historic win😭
Speak No Evil was one of the most tense and frustrating watches I’ve had in quite some time and right when you can’t take it anymore, they hit you with one last haymaker at the end. The lead couple drove me nuts as well, but overall, the film was insanely effective and I applaud movies that go to the lengths they did. 4/5.
Girl, I agree about Don’t Worry Darling having some Stepford Wives inspiration. How could Olivia Wilde not credit that movie??
Thanks for all the likes, y’all!
My Little Eye yeesssssssss. I actually love that it jumped past all the exposition. It was just BAM everything’s going great and everyone’s about to win and everyone’s good friends then “oh…..oh god we’re gonna die here”. But I also don’t like Big Brother so that’s probably the dif. Honestly so happy to see literally anyone talking about that film
regarding speak no evil, i also think it's beneficial to remember the cultural aspect here. everything is of course a bit more extreme to ellicit that uncomfortable feeling, but there is this focus on how people from different countries (supposedly) react to situations.
the danes being very passive and pushovery, despite knowing that there is something wrong. and the dutch being almost far too direct sometimes and super social. i have experiences with both cultures, and i found it fascinating to see how they were portrayed here. it really added to the whole uncomfortable atmosphere.
Speak No Evil made me want to crawl into a hole and never come out.
Small correction about the original Goodnight Mommy (Ich seh, ich seh): It's an Austrian movie, not a german one :) Even though they speak German in it.
Just a little correction since we Austrians usually get a bit upset when people credit Germany for our stuff xD Sorry, had to point that out. But I actually didn't know that there was an American remake, might need to check it out :)
came here to say this! i feel like that happened to funny games too
The problem is that the twist with goodnight mommy has been done a lot before, even when the original came out, tv shows, other movies that are older have done it before
Was that point of that movie the twist at the end though?
Don't Worry Darling felt like a long episode of Black Mirror. And that's not shade because I like Black Mirror.
you know i had to go straight to see your thoughts on don’t worry darling😂
I actually really like it when a movie takes a little too long to reveal the twist if it's done right because then I'll think I figured it out on my own and I'll feel really smart.
My favorite CZcamsr of all times, I definitely love your videos
omg i could have sworn you had mentioned my little eye in one your videos? i’m so shocked you’ve never seen it! it’s been awhile since i’ve watched it, will need to hunt it down now. hope you enjoy your baby moon 🖤
I definitely think you were supposed to be frustrated with the couple. They had several opportunities to avoid what ultimately became of them, up until the last possible second.
Spoiler
When the Dutch man steps out of the car to take a piss, the film makes a point of showing our protagonist eyeing the keys, as if he was strongly considering taking the wheel, but couldn't follow through. And there wasnt much to stop him either
His passivity does stretch your belief a bit, but if they had actually left, we wouldn't have much of a movie then. I can forgive it knowing that
That is the whole point of the movie. It's what makes it work. It's why they made reference to culture in the early dinner conversation scenes. I love how the movie seems like a weird comedy of some kind until the very end where it just turns pitch black tonally.
the no eyebrows are such a slay!!
sarah i have to say the light/natural eyebrow look really suits you!! looking forward to ur next vid 💖
i went to see pearl and was blown away and had to come to your channel to see what you thought of it. while i was there i realized i was pretty behind on your videos and decided to catch up and watched your review of barbarian. i had no intentions of seeing it until i saw your stellar review and went to the theaters the next day! a definite horror fave and one of the best scary movies i've seen in YEARS! i had to watch it all behind my hands and left the theater feeling giddy with excitement from being that freaked out.
I agree with speak no evil.. the parents just we’re like 😮 and they just stood there
i look forward to these videos every month!
You should do a list on 80's horror and 70's horror. 80's horror has to have "Ghost Story" in it, and 70's horror "Kolchek the Night Stalker", the best made for tv horror movie ever.
I'm so glad you love Ad Astra too! I saw it in theaters and was crying and so moved and everyone I tell to watch it doesn't seem to care for it : (
Always love the recap videos, looking forward to October's!
I recently found your channel and subscribed ! I am just loving going back and watching your videos!👏🏼😀👏🏼
I don't know if I have seen a video of you reviewing the movie "Meander" but I feel you would really like it. Great "Saw" like film elements and a decent metaphor at the end of movie. Random recommendation, but just passing along the noteworthy finds. Love your content.
Always love watching these!! But I need your thoughts on Fall 😭
I hope you enjoy your babymoon! LOL. Congrats once again future horror mommy! ❤️
Ughhhh I agree about Speak No Evil. It's very well-done, but damn it made me SO MAD.
Love the content lately, Sarah! :)
I could be wrong but I've never heard you talk about an American werewolf in London before! loved that movie so much since I was about 6, and has one of the best transformation scenes ever imo, its so painful to watch.
Best movie 🍿
I was already a fan but hearing that you are a big brother, fan, makes me even more excited! Team Taylor, all the way!!!
Hope you guys have a fun trip to LA!
You posting makes my day
I saw a show years ago that dealt with being so polite or not wanting to be embarrassed but where’s the line? That situation was a woman alone in a parking garage. She was a little spooked…but then she heard footsteps, sees nothing. Walking faster, the other footsteps speed up, now she sees a guy but she doesn’t know what to do…
I’m looking forward to Halloween 🎃 ends and Hocus Pocus 2
Yes. As soon as I saw the trailer for don't worry darling I thought of stepford wives
Oooh! I think I recommend My Little Eye! When I rewatched it I had forgotten that it's so slow at the start. I saw it in cinemas in 2002 and it terrified me.!
I've never seen the original Goodnight Mommy so I didn't know the twist and I don't know if it was obvious in the original either, but I could tell the brother wasn't there pretty much halfway through, once I realised nobody was talking to him and then as you said, the time to the reveal just dragged on, it felt frustrating and pointless once you realise what's happening.
When I first saw Ma in theaters I was in a room full of very reactive people, which made Ma so much fun! I typically hate people commenting in theaters but it was all so well timed that I wish everyone could have the same experience I did 😂
The ending to Speak No Evil pissed me off too lol 😂
I felt the same about the OG Goodnight Mommy. The twist was obvious in the first 10 minutes or so. I kept waiting for a second twist that never came. Like you, I was interested to see this remake to see if the twist was better masked but it sounds like it wasn’t! I will have to check it out.
OMG IM SO EARLY. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Super excited for Halloween! U should do a Halloween must watch horror movies !!
Perfect timing, just binged your vids including your reactions to past top 10 horrors and I couldn’t stop pissing 😂 love your channel
Couldn’t stop WHAT?
Kolobos is an early 2000s/late 1990s movie that I was reminded of when you spoke about My little eye 👁
I’d love to see you do a video on movies with low RT scores that you love or your all time favorite bad horror movies
You should do her final red outfit! Such an iconic look
I haven’t seen Don’t Worry Daring but the trailer made me immediately think of the Stepford Wives so that’s crazy that it wasn’t credited as inspiration.
Omg I’m shocked you don’t like “The Visit” it’s so fun and entertaining!! I really enjoyed it!! It’s creepy funny different and something I’ve personally never seen!! I definitely at least think it’s worth watching
I loved “Don’t worry darling” because I love Florence Pugh. I could watch her read off the back shampoo bottles for two hours..😂🤷🏼♀️💗
There were parts of Barbarian I loved and parts I felt a little ick about. Can't wait to be able to see it again and see how I feel.
I had the same reaction to Speak No Evil. I think it was a movie that was very well made and it serves its purpose, but damn I was angry at it!
what you said about don’t worry darling is so true!! how could olivia not credit the stepford wives?
my favorite thing i watched this month was definitely "still alice" starring julianne moore (not a horror) but i watched "the glass house" from 2001 because i saw you gave it a good rating on letterboxd. i somewhat enjoyed it, predictable ending aside. great video per usual! will you be seeing "the menu" in november??
Don't Worry Darling is like one rewrite away from being great. Was it done before? Yes, but damn the potential was there. 💔
i was late to don’t worry darling and only saw from the party scene and on and honestly maybe that helped me bc i was shocked and terrified when they revealed the twist. it’s not the best twist but i was thinking about it happening to me or irl and that horrified me.
Love your videos, Sarah. Have you had a chance to see Piggy yet? If so I'd love to hear your take on it.
When you mentioned the Stepford wives I shouted “yes” lol
I loved Pearl so much and it’s probably my favorite movie of the year too! I’d say red dress Pearl (like everyone else is saying) is the best way to go!
my favorite movie this month was bodies bodies bodies because it just came out on digital and i didn’t get to see it in theaters so i bought it without watching before cause i had a sense i was just going to love it and i did. 5/5 loves it
I loved Pearl that’s cool that you’re going to dress up as her. I’m going to watch Barbarian this weekend
Sorry if you’ve already reviewed it, but have you seen The Black Box? It’s on Prime. It was a really good thriller and had a few pretty creepy visuals. I haven’t heard many people talk about it.
Two recommendations: older 80’s underrated gem called Sole Survivor is on Shudder and very enjoyable if you haven’t see it. It’s like It Follows, meets Final Destination. Pretty creepy. And for a newer movie Mona Lisa and the Blood Red Moon freakin rocks! So good. So original. A must watch.
Thanks for the Review. 😀
Pearl is my top favourite, it’s so good
I get your frustration with Speak No Evil but that was the point. And they do make better choices near the end- he tries to escape. In retrospect, I should've figured out the 'twist', but I was so into the uncomfortable nature of the movie. I really liked it as a feel bad movie, so bleak.
Random video idea suggestion. You should try reviewing or reacting to some horror short films. There’s some great ones on CZcams! I’m sure you’ve seen some of them already
Use the my little eye bonus feature it’s way cooler
100 percent agree on your Don't Worry Darling review. I saw so much potential just for it to really fall flat..
You should check out a movie called whisper from 2007. I saw it yesterday, it was so different from any original horror movie; a group of criminals kidnap a kid but the kid is... Different.
Just finished this amazing indie horror card game called Inscryption that really seemed like something you would like! Its got found footage, escape room, a mystery, eerie vibes, and is super weird and filled with lore haha 🖤💀
LOVE THE TAYLOR SHOUTOUT
The original script of Don't Worry Darling actually revealed the reveal before the middle of the movie, and the rest of the movie was about the escape.
I actually just bought the visit on dvd today . I remember liking it so I’m gonna rewatch it and see. And I also just watched the rental and Texas chainsaw massacre on Netflix and they were really good.
PossessedbyHorror Thanks Much !
Could you please do a tier ranking or worst to best for all of Mike Flanagan's work??
Will you be reviewing smile?? :)
I just watched a new German horror movie called "Old people" on Netflix and I can't help feeling that it was inspired by Shyamalan's "The Visit".
Barbarian is definiely the best movie I saw this month. I still have to watch Pearl I'm hoping to do it this week end.
Sarah is the kinda CZcamsr that I feel so parasocially close to that no matter what she posts, what she thinks about a movie or anything I’d not care, it’s a healing experience, I’d watch her watch paint dry, very few can have this effect, but she does, since day one. Idk, I just wanna say positive things to her every chance I get. ❤
Im surprised you havent done a review of Z or Haunt. Both phenomenal.
my fav movie i watched this month was lady bird but my fav horror movie i watched this year was defo bodies bodies bodies or orphan
Watched speak no evil. This is how im gonna die probably cause I will 100% not wanna seem impolite
I liked Speak No Evil, same thoughts same feelings. I actually took a break to drink some water in the middle to just breathe haha. I totally get what the director wants you to feel and I respect him for that
Speak No Evil got me heated. I agree
Hi! Love your channel!! So in listening to your review of Speak No Evil & frustration with choices being made, couldn’t the same similar critique be made for Barbarian?? I’ve seen both movies & had similar frustrations at choices the protagonist(s) made. Just curious. Also welcome to motherhood! I have 4 kids, (pay attention to ages 😄) 21, 20, 19, & 16 😳☺️
I had that thought watching both movies.
yes my little eye!!!
The original Goodnight Mommy was great because of the visceral, visual, and subliminal elements, like the pet insects, the dream sequence, that early unexplained zoom in on black cavernous space as foreshadowing, the antiseptic and cold quality of the architecture and interior spaces of the house which seem to be a psychological metaphor, the visual element of the mother without a face and the idea of the person who takes care of you being an imposter, I could go on and on. It's far and away a more effective kind of horror film than most of what has come out of the genre in the last 20 years or so, mostly because that kind of thing isn't easily imitated. Those are the elements that made it work. They worked so well and on such a different level that the plot twist at the end was incidental. It wasn't really a plot driven movie anyway. I mean... who cares? It's kind of like watching a really funny and inventive comedy and getting upset that it didn't have enough jump scares or something.
2022 is going to be a great year for horror movies.
It was pretty easy to see from the start where Don't Worry Darling was going. We don't know why or how yet, but realistically I think most filmgoers could come up with 3-4 conclusions a movie like this was going to allude to long before the first act even ends. When the "twist" is finally revealed, it evokes such a "who cares" response, there's a severe lack of tension because of it's unoriginal premise and lack of execution.
I hate to be «that person», but Speak No Evil probably hits harder if you’re from Scandinavia. It’s basically calling out our social insecurities, deconstruct them all, before stuffing them into a meat-grinder and laugh at the bloody remains. Be it overdone politeness, political correctness or our inability to say «no» - it’s all used to punish the characters for their flaws.
I don’t really think the movie was supposed to be a criticism of these things, more than a satirical commentary. Sure, the final 20 minutes aren't fun, but the entire first hour felt like a black comedy, and the theater I sat in was howling through most of it (that trip home from the pub in particular)!
Going back for a stuffed animal? I can think of plenty of Norwegian fathers who would actually do that! 🤣
I could totally see the different perspectives from different cultures! I should have thought more about that
@@PossessedbyHorror Don't worry about it! Most people would agree it's a pretty far-fetched scenario. It's just something so uniquely Scandinavian about it, I can't imagine the same movie being made anywhere else.
Hellraiser is gonna be on Hulu, I can’t wait for that one
There's an element of this in every western country, although it may be more pronounced in Scandinavian countries. I got the satire as an American. You'll find that same pathological politeness thing among certain demographics here. I lived in Australia for a number of years, and you'll find it there too. I loved that movie. I love how it's like a weird uncomfortable comedy and then just goes off a cliff into blackness at the end. If you watch it a second time, there's this fantastic shot of the father looking at his own reflection in a window looking out into blackness and his reflection is doubled. It's really effective as foreshadowing when you know how the movie ends, as are the scenes where his killer takes him to the spot where he will murder him, gets him drunk, and lets him let loose about how stifling his life (and by extension his culture) is. lol it was too good. As far as "dark" cinema goes, it's top notch, imo.
I like watching movies like the visit and MA when cleaning or just for background noise because you no your not gunna miss much😅
