Jehovah's Witnesses Crazy "Overlapping Generation" Teaching

  • In 1984, Jehovahs Witnesses claimed that those alive in 1914 "will never die" since they were the generation that Jesus was talking about in Matthew 24:34. Since their 1914 prophecy has failed, here is Governing Body member David Splane trying to claim that when Jesus said "this generation" he really meant TWO overlapping generations.

      But on a more serious note: from his explanation we can draw conclusion the second generation must be annointed at the latest in 1992 in order to overlap with first generation. I assume annointed person is at least 18 years old and such person can live approx 80 years. That means we need to add 62 to 1992 and we arrive with year 2054. This is just so easy to see through. He says ones like Franz saw the sign of Jesus presence in 1914 and understood it's significance. How can that be when they weren't looking for it then? At that time they believed Jesus presence had begun in 1874. It wasn't until the late 1920's that the date for the beginning of Jesus presence was moved up to 1914. Interesting too how he leaves out Matthew 1:17 for determining the length of a generation. If you do the math from that verse I believe you get an average generation length of about 43 years which seems far more reasonable than the 100+ years of overlapping nonesense.

If his work was so wonderful, then why doesn't the WT ORG display any of it at their website? Why have they completely discarded it as "old light"? Jesus would never have approved of Rutherford's so called "spiritual food." How many JW have even read any of his writings? Very few for it's hard to find now. So if a baby was born 10 minutes after Joseph, and that baby wasn’t in Joseph’s generation because it hasn’t “lived” in his generation... are you saying that the baby isn’t alive until it’s actually born into the world?

    The key word here... "This" Question: who was Jesus talking to? The disciples. What was the question and subject being discussed? The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. Jesus said to the disciples "this generation" not some other generation, not some generation two thousand years later but "this generation" of the apostles day.
    The fact is, the generation of 1914 passed away. Period! "Brother Franz" is known as an "apostate" when he wrote the book "Crisis of conscience" leaving this false cult. Where does it say in the Bible that the generation spoke about by Jesus would consist of groups of people at different times? It doesn't.

    Think for yourself about what the word generation means.
    Is a 30 year old man and his child the same generation?
    What about the 30 year old man and his 60 year old parents?
    What about with his 90 year old grandparents? Are these 4 different generations?
    Note the speaker lumps all those folks alive at the same time into ONE generation.
    The speaker is trying to change the meaning of the word generation.
    Why?
    Because if someone born in 1914 who lived until they were 102, then any baby born on the day they died, before they died...can be counted by this speaker as the same "generation". So with that use of the word then the cult can claim about 200 plus years after 1914 to allow for a new ...end of the world date.

    How long can that generation potentially be, well 120 years at the most since this is the maximum age since the great flood, so 2034ish is about the latest time for armageddon to take place or 2039 if it means when the war in heaven ended - provided 1919 is correct.

    To be fair, as a current JW: we should be more explicit when we differentiate "doctrine" from "theory."
    "Doctrine" is in the Bible. There is only one God, humanity is mortal without his help (this, the "wages sin pays is death"... Not torment after death), but his plan has always been to restore what Adam lost in a physical resurrection of the dead and restoration of creation.
    That's doctrine from the Bible.
    This entire talk is human speculation about prophecy COULD apply, based on some human interpretation of how long certain prophecies seem to be, what events start those prophecies, and what events they point to. Does the "7 years" start at the destruction of the temple, or when the first slaves were taken, or when Josiah died and Israel was subjected (a range of 23 years)? And are these "7 times" to be interpreted as 360 days or 365 days?
    Those variables are not specified in the Bible, so, while it's plausible they could point to 1914 and the start of the world wars... OR they could point to 1948 and Israel being restored (as a secular nation).
    A "way this could make sense" may be potentially reasonable speculation to consider... But it is not "doctrine."
    He's suggesting one of a few plausible starting points, one of many possible definitions for "a generation," and just throwing in the variable of people self-identifying as anointed, rather than just being "living contemporaries" even by his own definition.
    And conflating "one potential speculation" with "therefore we know..." Distracts people from the important doctrine of following Jesus and looking forward to that kingdom (rather than being distracted by human minutia).
    We need to be careful not to repeat the flaws of the Pharisees, who's personal authority lead to such an attachment to human traditions that it undermined their central intended function- to teach what they were told to teach.

    • @singed8853
      @singed8853 Před rokem +1

      I must disagree with you on a certain point. This is not a ‘possible’ definition of a generation. Try and find this bizarre made up idea anywhere else and you won’t find another example of it. Everyone knows what a generation means and it has been well understood for as long as we know. A generation is an indeterminate number of years but it has limited known and accepted definitions. You’re not of the same generation as your parents or grandparents just because you met each other during your life.
      This is just another jw prophecy that failed and their nonsense lies about being chosen by the Bible god goes up in smoke with it. Exposed as another falsehood they peddle.
      This is a core doctrine in the jw cult. It’s not minor. And the doctrine has been proven false. That generation is dead. Jesus did not make an invisible ‘2nd coming’ in 1914 and select watchtower corporation as his favorite religious organization. Bunch of silly lies from a controlling cult.

    • @singed8853
      @singed8853 Před rokem +1

      By the way - also consider the actual definition of ‘doctrine’. The 1914 and generation teachings are definitely jw doctrines. But you are of course correct that these doctrines are not in the Bible.
      Whether you can celebrate certain holidays or birthdays is also not in the Bible. But these are well known jw doctrines. These aren’t preferences of your leaders but literally religious dogmas. Canon doctrines which jws must conform to. You mention concern about becoming like the Pharisees. I think that ship sailed long ago.

    • @morielrorschach8090
      @morielrorschach8090 Před rokem

      @@singed8853 I understand your perspective, but it seems a bit silly for you to insist to another group of people how dogmatically they believe things...
      The whole generation idea is a plausible explanation of a plausible explanation. The fact that it has been explained many different ways by different people, and changed demonstrates that it's not some unquestionable dogmatic doctrine. Just a plausible explanation as to what Jesus could have been referring to in Luke 21.
      Luke 21 is doctrine, sure. But spoken in parables that are still not yet clear. So, just like the apostles, of course people following those instructions get excited when they seem like it could be being fulfilled before our eyes. It might not be, but it could.
      As for holidays... I can't think of a singular verse that addresses holidays specifically. But the entirety of the time between the covenant and the destruction of Jerusalem has been centered around God telling people "worship only me, have no other gods." And doing something spectacular for Israel, and them being faithful for a while, but eventually mixing their faith with neighbors. Adopting religious practices and making alters was what always lead Israel to stray from God and lose his protection until they returned. It's probably less than an inch of your Bible's thickness, but it's ~800 years of repeated mistakes and consequences.
      Adopting outside religious customs and ceremonies and celebrations being part of that.

    • @singed8853
      @singed8853 Před rokem

      @@morielrorschach8090 appreciate the response. Here’s just what I’ll say about the holidays thing. I don’t see how celebrating Christmas or Easter is worshipping another god or idol. Those 2 holidays are actually supposed to be about Jesus and god for Christian’s. They don’t celebrate them to worship something else.
      I also can’t see any plausible explanation for thanksgiving somehow involving idolatry. That was never even a religious holiday for anyone.
      Honestly in my view I see the holiday thing as just another way of isolating jws from non jw ppl and creating an identity for the group to distinguish itself. It’s too big of a stretch in my view and is consistent with the birthday prohibition - which is similarly isolating and which has no reasonable basis in my view.

    • @morielrorschach8090
      @morielrorschach8090 Před rokem

      You had a second response to that I can read iny notifications, but not in the thread for some reason about a different interpretation of the word "generation."
      Let's explore that. I think we all understand that language can be used in very different ways, but if we insist that what you consider to be the immediate simplist interpretation must be true or the prophecy is false.
      Let's consider that. The words come from Jesus (in 3 of the gospels. Luke 21 and Matthew 24... I forget where in Mark at the moment.) He was speaking to his disciples who asked when these things would happen, and Jesus described a series of events, including wars and rumors of wars and a parable of a fig tree, etc. And Jesus said "this generation will be no means pass away until all this occurs."
      Preterists interpret Jesus as speaking to the generation of people he was speaking to, and therefore being fulfilled by Vespasian destroying the temple ~70CE. Yet, Jesus did not return.
      Because their interpretation of what Jesus said did not happen,
      1- does that mean he was only talking about a building being torn down, and he's never returning? Or 2- does that make Jesus a false prophet? Or 3- does that mean the preterest interpretation is not the limit of what Jesus was referring to?
      JWs DO doctrinally believe that the generation Jesus will do what he said. "Who, when, and what that is" is not yet clear... But the watchtower has posted some ideas.
      The basic ideas are indeed still plausible, depending on how you view different variables. Even the EARLIEST interpretation is still technically possible as there ARE still people alive today born before 1914. Even without overlapping anything, that generation (those specific people) has not passed away yet. It's quite small, and frail. Personally I don't think that's what it's referring to.
      Whatever it is, Jesus was right. Our job is to not simply ignore him, but try to keep a watch to understand what that truth is.
