My family (all of whom are Witnesses) stopped mentioning 1914 several years ago.
It's been erased from their discussion points.
What i find fascinating is that the 1914 doctrine still exists, but no-one seems to want to talk about it :)
I imagine it's no different than them abandoning the "Jesus is Michael the arch-angel" teaching; or anything else they believe that's clearly erroneous.

In terms of their doctrine and dogma I witness this organisation as being equivalent to a financial hedge fund: constantly preaching a message that works and makes sense regardless of the outcome.
To cement their doctrine they delete their unwanted history. Their history is filtered to new members.
Non-witness family members have no value: victims to a threat beyond reason and their efforts.
If they did, that David Splane "overlapping generations" broadcast would mysteriously disappear without explanation just like the majority of their printed publications .

I'm curious, what about the 1914 date situation tipped you over the edge? My mother is still in, and I've tried more than a few tactics to try to get through the programming and to date, she's a true believer. She kind of goes into a fugue state when you ask questions about counterintuitive things, and just starts repeating talking points. Do you have any advice I can use that might finally get through?
Lipzig Schweitzer I can tell you what helped me. I re studied the section in the appendix of the “Bible Teach” book which deals with 1914. I read every scriptures cited in the book texts I had used to prove the teaching to others in the past. This time though I was trying to really dig deep and strengthen my faith so I read the entire chapters around those verses and sometimes a chapter before and after for really good context. Just one example Daniel 4:10-16 is cited but if a person reads the context they might realize that the “tree dream” has nothing to do with Gods kingdom at all and is only a localized event in the time of King Nebuchadnezzar.
The best example though I can think of is the source scripture for this prophecy, Luke 21:24. It’s where Jesus says “Jerusalem will be trampled on by the nations, until the appointed times of the nations are fulfilled.” The JW logic is that Jerusalem is the seat of Israelite kings and thus here represents Gods heavenly kingdom. This is what I taught others and believed too. So this verse is the basis for the entire prophecy that there would be an undisclosed appointed time for when Gods kingdom would be on top again. However if a person reads the context they’ll see that this verse applies solely to Jesus prophecy of Jerusalem’s destruction by the Roman armies around 68-70 C.E.
The basic principle is that these events have nothing to do with each other and that there is no prophecy that’s points to any dates regarding Gods kingdom and the last days beginning.
To help your Mother though I think if she is anything like I was and the typical JW she’ll just reject any logical arguments you present to her. Instead I would tell her to do some very deep personal study to prove to herself the 1914 prophecy. I spent a week studying it and going over things again and again to see if I missed something. I think the reason the truth of the matter got through is because I was looking at it myself instead of someone telling me I’ve been tricked. Hope this helps. Sorry for so many words.
Lipzig Schweitzer I don’t know what to tell you for how to help your mother but for me I let myself do research beyond the jw library and app. Carl Olof Johnson’s book on gentile times reconsidered is a great book as is the jwfacts.com website. It’s hard to break through the indoctrinated mind though unless it’s ready to think elsewhere. I wish you the best and just take it slowly and bring up smaller points of reason before going for the big ones.

I appreciate the advice. I agree they I think only in her own study will she learn that "the Truth" isn't true. I can't lead her to it. What's funny is, my younger brother is a Mormon, and listening to the two of them try to justify their faith to each other is hilarious to me. It's like watching two taco trucks pull up outside a single office and spotting each other across the parking lot.

I agree. Most will stay to the end with this religion, but many will wake up, especially those who have been suppressing their doubts. Feel better!
I suppressed my doubts for years and I felt like I was just being like a "murmering Israelite" when I would start to question the "God given authority and anointing" of the governing body.
The more I prayed for understanding of the bible and for God to make me know if this really was his organization that he is commanding, the more I realized they absolutely are not.
They certainly do, however, teach many things that are biblical that others in the christian world do not and they most certainly do have MANY genuine people who love God and this was what was hard for me.
But I had to understand that just because they teach some scriptural truths does not mean they are Gods spokespeople.
Even the false prophets of old used Gods name in worship, taught others and their children about him...etc but this didnt change the fact that they were acting as a false prophet by speaking in Gods name saying things were going to happen when he never directed them to. And this was a MAJOR sin in Gods eyes, so major that he ordered the false prophets to be killed in Israels day.
I remember sitting in a Kingdom Hall a couple years ago and the scripture in Isaiah 44: 25,26 was read where it says that Jehovah is frustrating the signs of the empty talkers..the one making diviners act as fools, but then he says that he COMPLETELY fulfills the predictions of his messengers. I just about fell out of my seat thinking how the Watchtower has a 100% failure rate on all predictions made, proving by Gods own words that they are NOT his messengers. I havent been to a meeting since.
I have been suppressing my doubts for the last 3 years. Still don't have it in me to tell my wife, parents, and friends. 😢

I think at this point it's inevitable that they will have to get rid of the 1914 teaching. That teaching has a very definitive expiration date, and the "overlapping generations" nonsense will only get them so far. I would imagine the GB already has this on the agenda, and as Lloyd pointed out, they are already changing the language around 1914 in their publications. I imagine in a few years it will even be taboo to even bring up 1914, "old light".
or Theyll blame all the witnesses for believing in 1914 as absolute doctrine as if its something we all came up with on our own like they did about the 1975 date.
An older sister in my congregation told me about 1975 when I asked about it and she gave me the Watchtowers answer of blaming it all on a few brothers that started the rumor. Come to find out the one starting the "rumor" was none other than the president of the organization at that time Fred Franz as well as all the publications stating 1975 was most likely to be the end. Franz even gave talks about this, putting the idea in everyones head, and why wouldnt they believe him when they all feel that he was anointed by Gods Spirit to give these truths.
The new video the Watchtower put out last year about this same thing was jaw dropping how blatantly they lied about their own history and blamed the whole 1975 failure on the lower class rank and file.
Thank you for another eye-opening video Lloyd! The Watchtower indeed can remove 1914 from their teaching and simply dismiss it as "New Light" to keep their members.
Get feeling better Lloyd. Indeed you are correct I believe. Have found it less taxing to accept my family as lost then to forever hope. Many simply will not accept that they have been wrong, too much ego in thinking you are special and chosen.

Thanks for this video! That was my question on the Live Stream. I studied to become a witness in 1988 and it was so integral to the teachings, and as it fades further into the past and the subsequent gymnastics with the concept of “generation “ have ensued, they are looking more and more desperate. The redefinition of generation was a major aspect of what woke me up. Thank you so much for this. I appreciate you and your work so very much. Rest and feel better!
Monica Owens I studied in 1985 and was baptized in 1986. My handler (a sister) was soooo convinced that “ ... this generation will NOT pass away”. They had to be about 12 years old to understand what was going on in 1914 and they are very old now. The END is imminent, it’s around the corner!

It wouldn't be difficult to drop the 1914 Doctrine. The reason I say this is because most of the young people in the cult don't really know much about 1914 and 1919 anymore.

I love your analysis, it is truly creative the way the organization operates and they always prepare the new light years in advance.
A short while ago Watchtower made a one off comment, that the last days in Noah's day was 120 years. So its quite likely that many JWs will have that in the back of their minds. 1914 plus 120 years brings us to the date of 2034. It could be that more is said about that as we get nearer to that time.
We've all been wondering that the WT would do about the fast approaching shelf life of the 1914 teaching. Even if they decide they can no longer deny evolution, it wouldn't surprise me if they found away to tap dance around it...and that their followers would accept their explanation.
the explanation will be that "now Jehovah has given us even more light on this subject and we now understand the generation to mean ALL of spiritual Israel, the 144K from Jesus day all the way until the final sealing". At least thats how I think they will try and save face and then this way they are never stuck to a timeline and can continue with the 1914 doctrine.
This would be a flip flop in understanding however because "old light" once told them that this was the way to understand the generation, but that didnt last long as the new light told them it was all who saw and understood the events in 1914 that they would not die out. They even had to adjust that several times before the new wacky overlapping explanation.
So if they do go this route then the "new light" will actually be "old light" reborn. lol

Lloyd, you may remember in a tweet I mentioned my sister saying she had scriptural proof that 1914 was still on track with the overlapping generation. Having failed to find such proof she simply said that even if she died before Armageddon, she would still die believing - in short - that the failure of 1914 didn't change a thing. Yes, she was ready to believe regardless of the failure of a (the?) pivotal JW doctrine. There's proof of what you're saying in just one person I have indirectly polled on this.

I’ve been watching many of your videos and love your delivery of the informative material you show.
I was born in 1984 (great numerology there) and was raised in the beliefs of the Watchtower org until I was DF'd about 9 years ago. Father was an elder, mother never pioneered, but we had Monday family study, Tuesday book study at our home, Thursday Theocratic Ministry School and Service Meeting, Saturday field service (little tan service maps) and of course Sunday public (scripted) talk and Watchtower study. You guys can only imagine how stoked I was to find this channel with all the bound volumes and publications this gentleman still has in his library at his disposal (arsenal) I just want to say thanks for the channel and content, and hope you get better soon good brother...best wishes to you and yours..
That’s what I find quite frightening, that the majority of witnesses wouldn’t even be bothered. Just goes to show how deeply indoctrinated they are!

It's like the cover up started in 1976. If they can say people "jumped ahead" of Jaw, they can say the same about 1914. The old generation in denial while the new generation hears something different. Next they cover their tracks and delete or revise literature..
My husband had a private conversation with my brother not believing in 1914.. his wife told the elders and got him disfellowshipped . No happy memories about this date! He should be vindicated now
I lived in Ventura California in the sixties and knew dozens of the old ones from the Russelites and most just stopped after the 1914 debacle. They were fifty years past the date upon which they were to become Kings and Princes on earth and they still remaind in the in the organization even though they were inactive. They were old and many, including myself, were asked to do things for them. That was a reward for which I am grateful. The stories they told of the turmoil and the anger that the governing body showed and expressed towards those who asked questions was frightening to me as a teenager. Most who are fully in the organization will justify any change simply because, as a cult, The Watchtower has separated them from everyone else in their life and they have no where else to go.
Perhaps they will change the 607 BCE teaching and let it cascade from there.

I left in 1983/84. I left because of 1914 and because I was asked a question at a door that I could not answer. I was asked a question from Galatians. Long story short, how can the "other sheep" display the fruit of the spirit without the spirit. I asked many elders, pioneers and a circuit overseer. No one answered and I was told to ignore these questions

Great video Lloyd. You mention them having enough creativity to get rid of 1914. I think they still have enough wriggle room to get things up to 2054. They could at some distant point own up to 607 and have "new light" reveal it was 587, thus gaining 20 years, so 1934 becomes the new 1914. Then they could bring in the 120years from Genesis where Noah was given this time to preach before the flood.
Therefore 120 years from 1934 brings us to 2054.
They surely would never pinpoint a year again as lessons must have been learned from their past faux pas... But they could do a subtle approach like they did with 1975 and strongly suggest that this is a significant year.
They wouldn't do this in the immediate future as 2034 /54 could never be "just around the corner", but I'm sure it's one they have up their sleeve for the next Overlapping generation of GoBo members. I think I will write to Tight Pants... He can have this one for free on me.

Very interesting thought. It would not be hard for them. Despite not really understanding it, the rank and file have largely accepted the overlapping generations nonsense. Those with doubts choose to "wait on Jehovah"- so this is not a stretch
I was a Jehevah's Witness (1988-1990), Originally the JW's taught that Jesus was enthroned as king of the kingdom of God in Oct. 1874, not Oct. 1914, Charles Taze Russell, their founder, believed and taught the Oct. 1874 date and is evidenced in his series, Studies in the Scriptures, and various issues of the Watchtower published during his lifetime, in fact, the Watchtower book, 'Creation' published in 1927 still taught the Oct 1874 date! The Oct. 1914 ("new revelation") date was introduced by Joseph Rutherford in 1933.
I am ADD and some times tho longer videos are hard to get through, at least in one sitting. less is more. Really enjoy this video. Especially when you said 1914 is no longer a short period of time... I would at at least not from a human point of view. Being around jw's my whole life I could hear them defending 1914 in my head with statements like nobody knows the day or hour, Jehovah is not slow respecting his word or a day to jehovah is a thousand years and a thousand years a day, so technically it has been only an hour. ( I remember them telling me that 6,000 years of human history is like 6 days to jehovah) my rebuttal to that would be... Why did Jehovah use some 40 different people to write the Bible when he could have used angels to write it for him? Because he wanted it to be simple enough for average people to understand so a short period for people is NOT 100+ years. We are lucky if we live 80+years. I NEVER understood how they got the year 1914 from pairing three scriptures from different books like it was coded in the Bible. A day for a year... And so on. If that is the case than anyone can pair any odd scriptures together and make predictions.

I have to admit the whole 1914 thing never made sense/caught my attention really while indoctrinated. Perhaps I paid too much attention to history lessons at school, lol. I did and didn't; I've always had an interest in history but while still in the jw cult, the mental gymnastics around facts, such as history, were exhausting.
I honestly don't know how I survived through junior high-school... I was questioning the cult teachings but not ready to ditch them altogether, loving all these easily confirmed facts and still, there was the 'what if' in the back of my mind.
No wonder I suffered a burnout at 21.
"1914 doctrine"? To still believe in this cult after they changed a core teaching about the end of times requires something closer to a *1984* doctrine

About the new edition that Satan was out of heaven 'about' 1914... What they say is that 1914 is the year Christ started to rule but publications dont clearly say Satan was out of heaven in that year but some time after Christ was enthroned in heavens (that is 1914 or after..)

Idea: My mother, a devout JW, informed me that those XJW's who protest and otherwise speak out against the organization via various platforms will not be forgiven. Once someone knows the truth, there's no excuse for maligning God's true channel, etc., etc. Why don't you do piece contrasting this stance with the Yorkshire Ripper's baptism as a JW? Arrangements were made in the mental hospital for this serial killer to undergo water baptism. Thus, ex-members can't be forgiven for what they say, but the Yorkshire Ripper can be forgiven for all the women he killed and mutilated? I think such a post would get a lot of views.
The truth is that they're Luciferians who participate in a yearly Satanic ritual and they don't know it. What gets me is when people are so offended and then the day they find out for themselves, they want everyone to feel sorry for them and display so much compassion. Frustrating to say the least!!

Tari Blevins I often wonder how many of them would love to leave, but they are too afraid to change essentially their entire social circle and life routine. No doubt there are many more PIMOs than meet the eye. I am saddened to think of the wasted joy they could feel if they’d set themselves free.

Yes, I remember seeing that little nugget of “around 1914” when the new bible came out. They have set the groundwork already for doing away with that year. Also, they don’t use their bible anymore and the with the iPad it is harder to skim through and find. Convenient.

I should have clarified. In field service they are recommended to use the iPad. They call it the electric bible. At the meeting, at least in my area I am told, the iPad is used.

I just came across this video. My mother was a Jehovah witness, my dad was Catholic, but years later converted to JW, From age 6 to 15 I was raised in "The Truth" ..lol
I am the youngest of 12, and I have 2 sisters and one brother fully immersed in the Truth, and one brother in prison being witness to. There is a family reunion coming next may 2019. Where I know the JW family will try to "bring me back to the truth". I have been set free by Jesus, and have my heavenly fathers love, mercy, and guidance. I want to go to that reunion fully prepared to exsposes to them the real "TRUTH " and give solid reason of why I will never bow to that occult ever again. So I have been praying for help with this because I'm not a bible scholar, nor do I know even where to beging to show them. This video has given me just that! The place to start. Didn't Raymond Franz report that the society had given serious thought to replacing 1914 with 1957 at one time? I'd like to hear more about that idea and why it was eventually discarded.
I give JW a thumbs up for their tenacious efforts to spreading their gospel and keeping their flock. As a Christian obviously I don't hold the same beliefs as they do, but what this video forces me to do is to look at my Christian beliefs and ask myself: Are their areas that I hold onto only because it supports my personal belief? Am I truly following Gods word? Let this video help you examine your own beliefs and ensure its true and straight according to Gods true word.

For the last 12 years before my departure I never brought up 1914 as I thought it rather silly. It was mostly emphasized by organizational men of the congregation in order to keep people in and motivated/scared...

Zzygyy their latest explanation (overlapping generations ) no longer requires measuring a single person’s life from 1914. It can now be coupled with another whose life at least minimally overlaps the same lifespan before the geezer dies. But if you did go with their take on this for the majority of their history, it would have been a person who could well “understand” the meaning of the events taking place, so age 14-20? Meaning the person would now have to be 118-124. The oldest living person died recently at 117. Then again, all this is like trying to explain the impact and relationship Alice in Wonderland has with/on world events. Just makes the person look foolish if done seriously.
@@DavidTaylor-ki2ir correct. I studied with JW for about 7 months. I never joined die to the "Blood issue". At the time I was fighting cancer and blood transfusion was a possibility for me. Strange times 1991
I think the Watchtower is going to need to print their own dictionary just to redefine the word "Generation" to fit their needs. It's amazing how they can keep changing the definition of this word.

Iff they change 1914 they fall apart and they know it, because that means Jesus presence didnt start back then and his second coming now wpuld be future and it would create a whole bunch of problems.

Thanks again Lloyd for a great video despite your feeling under the weather. Although they were a bit fuzzy in the latest NWT, in 2014 they doubled down with the God's Kingdom Rules book, with a large chart on pages 26,27 and they keep repeating the 1919 mantra, including on page 101.
Despite that, most JWs just shrug their shoulders and are indifferent to their our teachings!
I’ve been saying this for a while, when I asked my circuit overseer about the 1914 doctrine he said that there’s no way they would keep it around if it was false because most of the people in the organization don’t even know anything about it and so if they needed to change it they would.
I have to say that I enjoy these shorter videos the best. It feels more conversational if that makes sense. Almost all improv , or Llyod is not only a fantastic singer but an actor as well.
Always enjoy your measured delivery John - does remind me a bit of a public talk but then you were probably trained in the JW public speaking style from a very young age. Talking to my JW family about any of your very valid and truthful points would, as usual, be pointless. They probably wouldn't even respond if I set my hair on fire. Once again, your vlog leaves me feeling very melancholy for the family I've lost but grateful to have escaped its cult-like recruitment campaigns.

Hope you get well soon, and thank you for putting this out. This is the main reason I left the WT because they changed their teaching. It felt like I spent my whole childhood spreading this lie/false prophesy.
1941, St Louis convention, the book "Children" came out. Also, the "new" understanding: the "time of the end" started in 1914 NOT 1874. The dates all started with Miller and the Adventists back in the 1840s (1844, invisible presence, 30 years corresponding to Jesus being 30 years old to start his ministry, 1874 to 1914 for the 40 years from 30ce to 70ce - as if years, seasons, time pieces, etc , on this planet dictates events in the universe).
Except without 1914, how do they get 1919, when Jesus came to the spiritual temple, and chose the Bible Students as his organization? How then would the FDS have it's appointment and therefore it's authority over JWs today?
Time is all a man made concept...when that time period is referenced in Revelations...I mean even if it was 200 years, isnt that a relatively short period of time in relation to all of time on earth?
They may say 1914 is old light and make it disappear behind some new candle, but each "new light" makes new people leave. So, it would be a good move.
I noted PBS The Great War and they had no idea how WW one changed the world, they used to know that. And I knew many of the little flock, 45 year olds and younger have no idea of that.

I need to go back and read the Bible, I thought the devil was hurled down and influenced Eve? Now he was hurled in 1914? Was he allowed back? I need to go read...I was brought up as JW but my Dad (hope He is resting well) went off in an elder after he had no clue what our names were after years! (We were poor, so we meant nothing!)
The last days began on Pentecost and even Peter testifies to this as he addressed the crowd after they just receive the Holy Spirit.
God inaugurated Pentecost to begin the last days because that was the day he fulfilled his promise to pour out his Spirit on all believers in Christ causing them to dream, see visions, speak with diverse tongues etc
Of course latest public WT no.3 page 13 par. 3 reads “Jesus revealed a particular generation would witness a unique combination......blah blah blah!” So no longer the generation who saw 1914 but now a particular generation- Codswallop!
