55 Chevy Gasser Disc Brake Upgrade - Cheaper than Drums

- In this video I did a front disc brake conversion on my 55 Chevy Belair. The kit came from Speedway Motors and ended up being cheaper than re-doing the stock front drums. So better braking power for less money, that's a win-win. Simple kit just uses GM A body rotors and calipers with a custom bracket to make it all work.

Rocking and a Stopping!!! Disk are the way to go!!! Keep Rocking it out!!!
Haha thanks man!
Love all your videos, your a great source of inspiration to me as I’m taking steps to do all this to my latest ride !
The best thing is you make no apologies for being untidy , I love it that way man 👍 that’s the way of a true genius 🤔
Awesome! Thanks for the kind words. I know I'm messy but I make progress Haha. Good luck on your project.
I have a similar kit on my 56. They work great! Hopefully all the linkage clears the pan. You know the snowball effect when modifying cars. I have to replace the rear spring bushings have them in hand but haven't done it yet. Will follow along to see how you make out. I was able to get my backup lights working on the 56 this weekend. Little cutting on the freshly painted column. Added a new wiring harness and switch. So cool seeing those little lights come on. After so many years. Lot of work but so satisfying. 😎
I am not confident in the steering Haha. Owell.
I might need to do this on our 57.
Yeah it's a pretty slick kit. Worth the cash for sure.
A better zero offset design would be to use 61 Chevy roller bearing hubs and 79 trans am rear rotors. Did it to my 57 and love it.
Looks great..I am going with a setup like that on my '66 Galaxie...John Milner is running scared!
Good video. Have a kit that uses these same rotors and calipers and brackets.
Looking good.
Thanks man!
Looking good i used the right stuff kit it used smaller metric calipers and mounted to rear of spindle. I used bracket kit from Danchuk on my other car looked just like your kit. Both seem to work the aame so far will know more next month plan on doing alot of driving. I posted some videos on my youtube channel
Nice! I'll have to check them out.
Hope your weather is better than do here in Nebraska...
About minus 30 today. Still lots of winter to go.
Update:
Stupid me I didn't know you used the original spindles with this disc set up. Years ago (many) you had to use a spindle from a B body car (or was is it an A body ) and buy a tapered ream so the stock tri five ball joints would be used to work with the later spindles.
Yeah they made it waaay easier now. The only change you need to do is the hole for the cutter pin needs to be re drilled. I guess the brake is a little wider than the stock drum stuff.
@@DDSpeedShop It's a cotter pin not a cutter pin. lol. You could really get technical and call it a shear pin.
@@RichieCat4223 #autocorrect Haha
Hey man! looking at buying this kit from speedway, 5 years later do you recommend it? Also do you think it'll be fine with oem manual master cylinder?
U can use 64 Chevy Impala. Top ball joints on ur 55 aframes they. Will fit right in place and they don't have that tall top sticking out and u will have better inside Rim clearance
What steering box will bolt up to the 55 from a newer vehicle and steering column
Would you happen to have the part number for the grease seal, thank you
What is best kind of brake booster for these heavy Chevys? I bought a single diagram one and its hard to stop. Are the dual diagram ones much better?
If u need it
The 80 90 in the steering box must boil
Don’t use the races that are installed in the rotors. Use the ones on the bearings that come with the kit.
Nice disc brakes
Thanks man.
Your welome man an get her done I'll come hot rod it for u
@@jakegouge855 Haha sure man.
@@DDSpeedShop no man I couldn't do that to u your a pretty cool guy
@@jakegouge855 thanks buddy.
Is there a reason the calipers go to the front side?
just the way the kit said to install. Seemed weird to me too
After all the metal work you have done I still wonder why you didn’t build a firewall recess .
So do I...... lesson learned for the next one.
I read an article years ago where guys were using a wheel barrow as the Recess. Good work man I enjoy your vids.
@@MrBluetruck96 yeah I've seen that. Thanks for the support man!
@@MrBluetruck96 my buddy uses them on 50 model chevy trucks and i have anither friend with custom shop has used them to works great
What spindles are on the car ?
Just the factory chevy ones.
@@DDSpeedShop You mean from 55?
I Thought those spindle took ball bearing not tapered bearings.
@@RichieCat4223 yup they sell everything now to upgrade it
@@RichieCat4223 yeah factory are ball bearings you can use later model hubs with roller bearings from 60s model chevy and keep drums danchuk speedway and others sell new hubs. The disc kits use 1970--72 chevelle ss rotors and 73 and up calipers, i just installed kit using gbody calipers or sometimes called metric think from malibus or cutlass late 70 to early 80s. Im thinking about buying the roller bearing hubs and put vette brakes rotor and calipers but will have to fabricate a bracket
