Hot Rod Disc Brake Conversion - Cheap but so Easy... Part 1

  • In this episode I start on the 57 Chevy Bel Air disc break conversion. I used a universal kit from a company called "Right Stuff". This kit can be used on most older Chevy's and simply uses some bracketry to retro fit GM single piston front brakes. In theory it should have been an easy install but it fought me pretty hard. This ended up being a two parter, so let me know what you guys think.

    Discs are going to make that Five Seven a lot more fun to drive, but less exciting in traffic. I got tired of pushing vehicles around my yard about ten years ago. So I have been on a mission to make them all move under their own power and stop, even if they are nowhere near being drivable. It makes driveway Tetris much easier. I use my winch to pull cars into the shop all the time. Used it Friday to pull an Opel GT with no suspension under it off my friend's trailer and onto a makeshift frame with wheelbarrow wheels so I can move it around the yard. Ever try to move a 900lb rusty body shell without wheels under it? I have two like that now.

    On the old drums, you get the hubs from a early 60's impala from the junkyard, and then a set of conversion bearings to convert the front to tapered roller like you have/had. The conversion bearings have a radius ground into the inner race to sit against the radius of the 55-57 spindle where the original ball bearings ran against.

    • @fiddlerpin
      @fiddlerpin Před 2 lety

    Dan, do you happen to have a partnumber on the brackets? I have the brackets you mentioned on the front of the stock spindles. You can’t switch them from left to right, then they gonna hit the steeringarm. So now I’m stuck with calipers on the front and might have a problem later with a swaybar hitting the calipers.... So, I want the calipers on the back of the spindle, but I can’t find the right brackets for stock spindles. Hope you understand? Thanks!

Thought it was a kit from a fairly well known company, but after sending their Tech guy some photos, turns out it's not. He said Chevelle or Camaro. Still polishing and cleaning some surface rust, but seems that it will be okay. 11" rotors. Rotors, calipers and pad look brand new. Hope so.
