FAIL! CHEAPEST Wiring Harness On AMAZON - DON'T Buy This Junk!

  • It's everyone's favorite automotive task.... WIRING!
We have done alot to out 1957 Chevy Bel Air. The car is basically ready to hit the road (if the snow ever melts). One of the most overlooked system on any old car is the wiring. Years of other people cutting, adding and splicing into the harness is never a good thing. I've seen to many nice old cars end up in flames due to poor wiring.
Typically I buy cheap knock off wiring harnesses off Amazon. They are lower quality but I have good luck in the past. This time, my luck ran out. This 12 circuit harness had miss labeled wires though out the whole mess of wires. Left was right and right was left. It was extremely frustrating!
Best of luck to ya if you decide to go with a cheap, know off harness on your hotrod.

I got lucky with my Painless Performance kit for my bus. I reached out to them and asked for the $800 kit and I would do an install video and they agreed. They sent me shirts and banners and all but never asked anything from me other than showing me install it. Score!

I've made a few wiring harnesses in my life it sure is nice you can buy them these days. First one I did was my first car a 53 ford custom flathead V8 from 6 volt to 12 volt conversion at 13yrs old, I just took everything from a 68 ford and made it work with a Chilton’s manual help. Grill was a great touch and find.

Hi Dan, years ago I built a '56 chevy Belair, and customer bought a Mexican built wiring harness. It was a nightmare, customer wanted me to use it so he had to pay me for he's of work. I spread new harness out on my shop floor, there were scores of mistakes. I had to use an ohm meter to check every wire, for instance they had the signal lights and the gas gauge wired together, plus the colors were a disaster. I got it sorted and installed. Customer commented he could have bought a painless wire harness for what he had in the one he brought me. No shit I said. I tried to tell you that . I always used painless wiring setup never any problems plus they have great customer service. Great hotrod products. I highly recommend them. Today I'm sure there are many more options available, but in the early 80s painless was the best. Good luck you'll get it done!!

The key with wiring isn't the outside diameter of each conductor. The important things is the wire gauge. Lots of cheap wiring is a smaller gauge with a thicker coating of insulation. Plastic is lots cheaper than copper.

Dan on a serious note, you could cute the rod out at the box take 3 in. Out and add a knuckle on the steering column. Because we know there a pain in the ass and not just that but in wrecks they go straight through the driver. They even had a name for them was the impeller column. Love the grill and them tires you got are for racing they are soft so when sitting I keep them on stands or move it a lot because they flat spot easy . Then they ride funny and they burn up quick. Headlights are a great touch. On video the passenger side door sticks out to straight could we paint the bottom of that fender just because it would look better in videos

The butt connectors with the heat shrink work really good, I've used them on my semi truck, and the worst place for exposure to the elements is the taillights on the back of the frame, they have no protection at all, and I've had those connectors on there for 500,000 miles with no sign of corrosion. They work.

This kit is similar to the speedway motors 12 circuit harness. I just installed it on a t bucket hot rod and it was fairly simple. I left the unused wiring tucked up behind the dash to future proof the car. The one you describe, seems a little different than the speedway motors harness. It seems fairly good though, by looking at your video.

It’s about being able to identify a circuit and isolating a circuit (knowing everything in that circuit without accidentally moving into a different circuit) once someone is able to do that, it’s easy to look past the clutter of all that rainbow spaghetti. Then you do your hookups one circuit at a time. Before you know it you’ve attached all the wires and shit works!

I like that there are cheap generic wire harnesses .
Didn't have that in the olden days. I remember writing a estimate to replace a wire harnesses estimate for a 1980 ford . It was the first (1) piece wire harnesses I'd ever seen in a car. The only new harness was from ford $1400 parts . The car was 4 years old and totaled for a harness but back in the day harnesses were expensive

I rewired my '54 Ford a few years ago. Dan is absolutely correct: universal wiring kits have a lower cost up front, but take more time and effort to adapt to your specific car. There weren't many (if any) '54 Ford specific wiring kits available when I did my wiring project, so I used a universal kit. However, I bought my kit from a very high quality American company (Ron Francis) so the build and materials quality was very good AND there was great customer support after the sale. That made all the difference for me. NEVERTHELESS, some new electrical components for old cars are only available in LOW quality import form; in my case, the new turn signal switch and voltage regulator. They were bad, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! 😒 Great video.

I have used a Painless ('69 Camaro), American Auto Wire ('67 Mustang) and Ron Francis ('72 El Camino) wiring looms. A generic system may be something people will get frustrated with and be forced to call in a professional to finish it. I personally found the vehicle specific looms are easy enough for most hotrodders. I know from my experience these specific kits are a 2 days job, maybe less, for a regular guy with a little help from a friend. Testing with kits was pretty easy and their support lines are a big help if you run into a problem. Buying a cheap $200 kit makes no sense if you have to pay a professional a $1,000 - $2,000 for his time. Dan's lucky and he has the experience, that's not something most of us guys have.
