$85 Paint Job + Super Rare 1955 Chevy Nomad - What Could Go Wrong?

- Well the Nomad is going 1 color. We're skipping most of the prep work and jumping straight into the fun part. Laying down some color! well, flat black to be exact. I went down to the hardware store and picked up a gallon of Tremclad rust paint and some thinner. I did spring for hardener in the paint so it will make for a nice sealer to all the new sheet metal.
I know I'm gunna take some flak on the paint job but this is a huge step forward in making this car a driver. Up next we "patina" the paint and test fit some off the glass.

A cool trick to keep the air hose from getting caught under the tires is place an old brake shoe in against the tire. The curved brake shoe allows the hose to slide easily and it is free
Oh LORD thank you for that tip... I lose my mind when the air hose wedges in that friggin crevice LOL... Never thought of using old brake shoes.
That's clever thanks
Who keeps old brake shoes laying around?
Cool tip, putting that in the tool bag! 🙌
And I am sure it works for garden hose to awesome
This is the what back yard build was meant to be. Thanks Dan from an average dude doing the same. Love the ending. Enjoy Paul
Yup!
Last car I painted, I used a Wagner Power Painter to prime it, came out fine, once I sanded all the screw ups off!
Too funny. ME TOO! I had a 68 4x4 Chevy truck I did. Fun times.
Dan lives to piss the internet off. I love it!!
Dan, with the windshield out, now is the time to paint the dash too.
Scrap the scoop. No scoop. Scoop free. Scoopless.
I agree, no scoop, but definitely needs and import wing, and Taller = Better. 👍👍👍
Totally agree 💯
Personally, I would leave the on-purpose scratches off as well.
Bigger scoop!!!
You say that and he’ll put that big honking scoop on there
Please No hood scoop , please don’t .
Agreed! No scoop!
Yes, please no hood scoop. But put a orange bug deflector on the hood!
Needs 2 scoops.
I've yet to see a scoop like this one that improves the looks of any vehicle.
@@dougr.6734 blasphemi had the clear scoop and i didnt even cum in my pants, not even once.
Asking for a friend
Definitely No Scoop. You are king of the mop. Looks good without the scoop, you want it understated,no scoop.
Loving the new paint. The Nomad has come along quite a ways from where it first came into the garage. Nice work!
“Gradge”
Watching you hold the "masking" on tire while painting it, all I could think is, glad I aint the only one LoL
I've painted quite a few cars in flat black rustoleum. 3 medium coats over a decent primer. I mix it with acetone and Japan drier and it holds up really well. My 82 chevy c50 has been painted for about 7 years now and still holding up well and it sits outside in PA weather.
Never tried acetone. How's it work compared to cheap thinner?
Ready for the summer demo derby, demo guys paint their junk cars flat black too.
@@daviddaniels6473 acetone evaporates at a faster ppm. Which reduces out gassing times and re coat times. It also in MY experiences causes oil based enamel paints to flatten much better when curing. I recently painted my 88 iroc z camaro with the same process as my 82 c50 and I got extremely minimal orange peel in the final finish. Thinner and mineral spirits didnt quite have the same effect.
I dig the black, if I wasn’t in a different province I’d offer to come lay out bad ass hot rod flame job🤟🏽😎🤟🏽
What ratios?
Impressive, Dan. From scrapper to driver. What's not to like. Rock On, Dan.
Good from far, far from good.
It’s just nice to see a CZcamsr painting a car.
No hood scope
I was taught to paint the same way by a guy at a small local body shop I paid 20 to let me watch. I painted 10-20 in my parents yard between high school and college for a couple hundred each profit to fund my 55. Thanks Dan
Love the paint. She’s minty. Still would like the top white. That would be so old school.
You can tell you love to troll the purest and I get a kick out of it too. you saved a total piece of rust and now you get to drive it. Great!!!!
At least it will be preserved and I agree with you that some cars deserve more time but this one is at least saved from destruction. Someone else can finish the bodywork down the line if you do get rid of it
That Hood Scoop looks like a bloody cookie sheet from the kitchen. For Gawd Sake, don't ruin the hood with that thing !
You're obviously not a fan of Two Lane Blacktop are ya?
It's his nomad. Let him screw it up his way
@@mcdonaldm73 2 lane wasn't a nomad so its pointless
But it is a 55', and the hood scoop is immediately recognizable. Especially by the majority of the hotrod community.
Dan saving tri-5 Chevy’s . Your such a national treasure. That car is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
I started hearing helicopters just watching, can taste the paint fumes lol, looks good enough
Maybe it's just my crappy internet connection playing the video in 360p, but that thing looked pretty straight when the paint went on. Either way, it looks wicked in flat black and I even learned a new patina blending technique at the end!
For a project you felt burned out or stuck on, doing something that makes a lot of visible progress really helps to get everything moving along again.
A great solution...It fills the need. Thanks for sharing. No princess frue-frue 15,000.00 dollar paint job...No china plate finish. Thanks!
Funny how you put one hand on the car to brace yourself while you’re wiping finger prints off with the other hand. 😂 Never a dull moment watching your videos!
I noticed that also.
Love it! Paint it black and hit the track!! You gotta save that scoop for something else.
The nice thing about your paint job you will have a great seal and a base for guide coat if you ever decide to wet sand and paint a color of your choice. Now you can enjoy it in the meantime.
Nice to see colour on it, Dan!
For some reason my heart sank when you ran the impact down it. 🤣
Staying true to yourself. Keep up the good work.
OMG! You're killing me. That last bit got me good. I know you won't, but forget about mucking about with the Hood. I was thinking you'd make at least one "pretty" car but I was delusional. I like watching your channel for what it is, not necessarily for what I want. I hope you can make a $ or two on it, and enjoy yourself.
In the definition of nomad it just ventured to a new place in its journey.
Yeah, and I remember when you brought it home. Your right, it was rough. And remember you took two to make one good one. And it has really turned out real good. Nice job Dan. Jack.
I think scoop is overkill.
Car looks like a beast already,
Just sayin' 😅
I think the flat black suits it. Really like the driver no thrills gasser look!
Your are starting be come the whole package.
Good for you man .
I like the retro Gasser look on that Nomad !!! I am on your page brother !!!
dan those letter box scoops are so 80's dont put that ugly thing on it
🙃🙃🙃😉😉😉
No one seriously expected shiny paint, it should look great with all its trim on.
Painted my 1940 Ford Coupe about this time last year- I used satin black Rustroleum- turned out slick-
That needs to be my goal more cars on the road
Black top white bottom would of likely been my choice after seeing just the roof and window pillars done.
That thing is awesome. Love it. I'm getting ready to convert a 57 pontiac 4 door sedan to 2 door sedan. This is the same color I'm doing. It look really sweet when you get all the chrome back on it. Well done!
Have you seen brushed chrome on matte paint ?
It looks killer and it'll save money on the chrome and polishing.
It looks SINISTER! I liked it before...But now ..I LOVE IT!
The flat black turned out nice. Skip the hood scoop. No need to break up the nice factory lines of a Nomad. I have to admit, I was really looking forward to seeing the white over silver you had originally planned. Keep that combo in mind for a future build. I think it would look sharp on a tri-five.
I think it’s funny Dan that if you weren’t CZcams famous and painted it whatever with a hood scoop…..nobody would care lol it looks awesome brother! I say blow their minds with an old school flame job haha! Love it
I’ve never sprayed the rustolium paint but I have used a brush and foam roller. I painted my 1996 dodge that way. Nobody ever guessed it was rolled on. Everybody thought it was sprayed. To me the advantages are you can work without a compressor plus you don’t need a mask/filter.
And you use way less paint Ive done it also
Looks good
Good morning Dan
Edit: she looks good
Perhaps name her Back in Black.
Way cool My 56 BelAir looked cool flat black because of all the Bel Air trim. your Nomad will rock! I saw lots of cool Nomads done flat black in the 60s and early 70s. My 56 was so cool327 4 gear pontiac posi. Flames old school flame on front
I simply dont give a crap what you do to it. Im just glad you are doin it . Hell yeah brother 👍👍👍
DAN please ditch the scoop turn it over and use it for a parts tray 55s are so cool with out any scoop THANKS
I love it. Flat black hot rods are the way to go!
LOOKS WAY BETTER THAN SHINY SILVER AND WHITE!! LOVE THE LOOK!
I love it!! Anybody can restore one it takes a real man to make it his!
No on the Hood Scoop! Don’t forget the gas door.
I'm not a fan of the scoop myself, but I have to admit it fits the Gasser theme.
Too late now, but a satin/eggshell white top (in Tremclad) might have looked cool, especially if you are going to patina it. A lot more work to mask, though, and probably smarter to do something!
Looks pretty good. You're doing it man, anyone can be a critic. Don't let them deter you from being better.
Love it, and I really enjoy your "Go ahead, make my day." attitude!
like it!!!! i am glad to see you do it your style, looks cool and menacing maybe can work that into a name like D D menace or something, godspeed Dan.ty for great entertainment
I know it's not in the budget but, dark red metal flake roof would look mint imo.
Dan it looks great! A True 20 footer. A million miles from were it started! Great Job as usual Dan.
You do me proud.. I would rather drive that car around than a mint nomad...rock on brother!
I agree with you on needing a topcoat to seal it up. It can always be sanded off if you want, but we both know you won't 😂 Bonus, noire matte is easy to touch up.
Of course right after you asked to watch the ads, an ad for CZcams premium came on letting me know I don't have to lol.
"noire matte is easy to touch up"
Ever tried? ;-)
@@JonDraeger only at night
NO scoop don't paint the top black...
The condition this car was in when you got it Dan to the point its at now do whatever you want to it you've earned it!! I love it by the way!
Owning one of these Nomads is on my list of things to do before I die. This is my dream car.
My wife and I watch you a lot and love what you do. It's just like watching myself, I think like you so much it's scary! I have cars all over the place very similar to the ones you have. I just did a 55 four door conversion after watching you do your blue 57, it turned out great. I did it for my dad who is 83 years old, he loves it. I have a 55 sedan delivery I planed to do just like you did your nomad. Not because it"s what you did, it"s because thats what I like and it's mine. I have done body work all my life everybody wants perfection, I hate it. You have the right idea in my opinion. You can have fun and who cares if it gets scratched, life is way to short. Keep on keepin on!
Leave the cake pan off the hood. Looks much better with it off of the hood
The paint looks good! It now looks like somebody (you) actually cared about the car instead of letting it rust in a field...then "fixing" it with bondo. The transformation is dramatic! I know you've worked very hard on it. Can't wait to see it run and drive. Congratulations, Dan!
Looks good, Dan!! Just remember, a blind man on a galloping horse won’t notice any defects!! 😂😂
The car will look way better without the scoop!
*
Driver Quality - Dan that's awesome - painted it in no more than 8-10 minutes We're ready to Rip!!
Semi flat salmon pink would look good with the flat back. Slam a straight axle with some 3in. Centerline wheels on front and some nice wide fats on the back!
Hi Dan,like your videos but lately you seem to do more chat than work, can’t you chat and work!
Good job !! My only questions are , is that a low pressure high volume gun ? and what pressure are you shooting at? Sounds high to me !!
I think it came out pretty good ..hotrod black ..cool
Now, you can add the "Nomadam's Family" to the "Black Widow" and the rest of the DD Speed Shop Tri-Five Collection. The Tremclad Black looks really mean!! Cheers!!
Save the scoop...for a different car this time.
Can't you put a better comment than you blame squirrels, that comment is old as dirt!
The nomad would look good with also a matte white top to match
That scoop, lol you get em going every time.
Ya know, if you walk around a bit you just might find Trim Clad in another color. 2 tone it! That's Wayne's World bit. Too funny.
Looks wicked. If you want it real menacing, paint all the trim in a gloss black to offset it from the flat black body.
I like the hood scoop .
If you understand the history of it - it's cool. 👍
@@viktorhardindyrvold4234 yip 👈🏻
Gotta tell ya Dan, when you said flat black, I said yuck, but she looks GREAT! Nice job sir. With the glass and the trim, she’s gonna look fantastic.
You need to take that baking pan you call a hood scoop and get it back in the kitchen before she realizes it's gone.🤣
Personally..I blame squirrels
Only squirrels
Is part of the joke that you have two chipmunks beside your name???

Really light up the internet by putting that fiberglass hood with the giant scoop on it 😄
Hello Dan, hey Danielle. I'm not a prolific writer of comments, but I wanted to tell you that the the Nomad looks fantastic. I know that it will be even better before you're done with it. I also know that you would never say how good it looks because (1) That's just the way you are I think. (2) Because people of the internet are basically without filters and basically just F,n rude, so they would cut you to pieces if you dared the to say anything nice or complimentary about your own work.
And Dude, it's your car and you're the one that's doing all the work, and we're the ones who are sitting on our butts watching you work . So what I'm saying is that people should watch the channel and enjoy it, or shut up and watch the channel and enjoy it. And like and subscribe of course. You're doing great, keep it up. Later
You're car You're money You're hands love the videos thanks for your time
I’m a painter with 22 years under my belt and this is hilarious, if your good with it who am I to judge
I’m all for you doing single stage paint jobs , wish it was gloss but baby steps 😂
Love This !!!!! Dan is one of My Favorite Canadians !!!!!! and Remember Everybody There is No "Wrong"way to do Your own project
I can't stop thinking of the Rolling Stones song "I See a red door and I want to paint it black"
No scoop. It's a Nomad!!!
Perfect! Now you get to enjoy it. That's what it's all about.
Looking good! Gotta love a flat black gasser. If you love her Dan, put a scoop on it. Thanks and we'll see you next time.
I like it never thought about painting my car with rustoleum but now I’m thinking I want to👍🏻
Love it!!!!! 😍 do the scoop and build it into a gasser!! Only thing I would think would looked better is a gloss black roof and everything else satin black.
Awesome
Don’t even worry just drive it!!!!!
I'm digg'n it. I would hate to see you put a scoop on it, but it is your car. From where you started & what you started with to here is an amazing accomplishment 👏.
