You gotta be kidding me. Brought this classic to Maaco for painting. I have no words, at least none that can be said here
I have one its stupid!
Exactly!
That was his mistake
This guy is laugh-out-loud high school amateur
It's funny from a distance I thought well, it doesn't look TOO bad. Then they showed the door lock and the pits in the roof pillar just painted over. And orange peel city too. Can't believe someone would actually take a car like that to a Maaco. He got what he deserved.
He wanted a $10k paint job but brought it to Maaco? Insane!
Right that's hilarious.
He wanted a $10k paintjob for the price of $3500 lol
More like $25k+ to do it 100% correct.
He didn't know what he needed, just what he was willing to pay. 3500 wasn't gonna get everything done that needed done on that car.
You can tell he's a cheap ass who probably complains about a free meal.
A true car collector would never take a classic to this kind of body shop.
100%
Maaco for your classic car ?? Lmao. That's like going to Walmart to buy an engagement ring, and then having 7-Eleven cater the wedding.

That's the difference between a $3,500 paint job and a $20,000. It's all in the prep work.
@Kyle Yeah, I would hope for 20 Grand it would include sheet metal and all body work. This is why no shops like doing full body resto because it takes too long and ties the shop up and at the end of the day, there is only Maco and Earl Shieb left.
Or he could go to.a good shop and get a nice 4k paint job
3500 is not cheap The paint should not be bubbling like that
Ha! Someone know the price of a paint job.
Lol I've done body work half my life even worked at a body shop who fixed brand new cars under warranty never seen a 20000 dollar paintjob people that pay that much for a basic 1 color paint job deserve to get it lmao...
"You get what you pay for." That man looks old enough to know better.
No, he looks old enough to want to save money over those more expensive shops that overcharge. (in his mind)
@Curt Zeek "Good work isn't cheap, and cheap work isn't good." Looks like he now has to have it re-done. Or maybe in his mind he was looking for this to happen so he could get a free paint job?
@@tylercordova4469 He got it redone for free. You don't go to Maaco to have a historic car painted. This guy expected a paint job like he sees on the auto auctions.
@@curtzeek8818 Yep! MAACO is where the cheesy note-lot used car dealers go to get a paint job that only needs to cover up accident damage & Bondo for a couple months until they can unload the vehicle on some unsuspecting customer. THAT'S who keeps MAACO in business.
Only pay for what you need….lol 😝
You don't take a classic car to Maaco and receive a cheap paint job, but expect the car to look like it was a $8000 paint job!
$ 3500 paint job from Marco you get what you pay for. A real paint job would cost more like $ 10,000 or more for a car that size .
The car was not stripped as the reporter claims. That would have cost over $3500 in labor alone. It was only stripped in certain areas to do minor bodywork and rock chips as you see on the receipt. You can clearly see in the photo the old lacquer paint is still on there. No modern urethane coatings are going to bond to that. It will always bubble and peel sooner or later no matter what you do or what primer you use. This is not a paint or Maaco issue. This is an issue of Cheap Chuck refusing to pay what it needs to be done properly and why Maaco ghosted him. IT HAS TO BE STRIPPED to bare metal.
Maaco should have told him modern poly paint won't stick to lacquer underneath.
Exactly he got what he paid for, which wasn't much.
all bet no sealer over the old paint lol you can not paint over maaco paint its shit lol. 13 to 25k for a real paint job on that car
I agree 100% that car has to be stripped down to bare metal. It's how I do any classic.
@@themobseat Polyurethane paint SHOULD stick to ANY prior kinda paint ( IF prepped correctly and EPOXY SEALED over it) but, yeah... Simply does NOT have that kinda resale value 🤷 But yeah, I DID getta major "kick" watchin THIS one, while they say "the cost WAS TO STRIP THE PAINT FROM THE CAR" meanwhile? I'm seeing the progress pics of the basic "scuff paint, and body work treatment".... Lol. Yeah, like I said earlier in my original post. You get what you pay for… he paid for a paint job not a restoration
He paid for an ECONOMY refinish!
And he got an economy refinish.
The Legal Problem for Maaco, is going to be in defending Their Warrantee, It's Too Ambiguous.
Price means nothing in this case. This car was painted with too much moisture in the air, or the car was never fully dried after wet sanding. Moisture under the paint has nowhere to go and will start lifting the paint as it dries and vaporizes. Tough and expensive job to fix correctly at this point.
Maaco..is for ordinary cars..never for classics..but .just bad luck.
You went to MAACO FOR A CLASSIC CAR AND ONLY SPENT 3500 FOR A MINIMUM 10K JOB?!?!?
You deserve this
Funny story. My dad has a 56 Bel-Air which he stripped and did all the body work himself on. He took it to macco back in 1995 and had their premium urethane paint service done. He paid extra for extra coats of paint so he could cut and buff it himself. Long story short the car looks as good as it did almost 30 years ago today and people at the car shows cant believe that its a macco paint job. Its all about what's underneath the paint not necessarily who painted it !
You're right. Every Maaco is different. Some do fantastic work. Depends on the shop
My brother's girlfriend's dad's sister's husband's cousin did the same thing and the car looks better than the factory original 35 years ago so I believe you
I was so ready to sympathize for this guy, and then I heard he took his classic car to Maaco. If you are dumb enough to do that and not do basic homework on shops before getting your car painted, I can't really feel bad for you. He deserves what he got.
You are right If he goes to court The judge probably will make macco repaint his car then the Judge should draw something like this on the core order🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same with me. He got EXACTLY what he should have expected for a complete paint job for 3500.00

He just laughed and showed me the correct method and ingredients. Flex agent? What’s that? LOL

Hey cut him some slack, the nearest Earl Scheib is over 100 miles away!
As an automotive painter, the old paint was definitely not stripped.
Not an automotive painter and had that suspicion . Glad I ran into your comment 👍
Old paint conflicting chemically with modern finishes. Doing this correctly would have tripled the price very easily.
You have to wonder how long the car sat in bare unsealed Bondo and primer ? Did they even bother to drain the water and oil separators coming off the air compressor ? The orange peel was caused by too much air pressure or having the gun too close to the car while spraying . And adding fish eye eliminator to the paint would've required extra effort .
The price reflects that. Bare metal re spray would be big money. It would take days to remove and refit the trim. Sill a shame they didn’t two-pack it and give it half a chance.
@@teamidris worst part about the trim is replacing any clips that get broken . An awful lot of them are not being reproduced.
Same story happened to me with my classic 1977 Grand Prix. The paint was covered with fish eyes. They brought it back in, repainted it and while the eyes were gone, they didn't sand the previous eyes down enough leaving tiny pin like dents everywhere. They didn't want to bring the car back in to fix their first mistake right. I had a big Maaco sign made and displayed it with the car at all car shows. I should have known better to bring a classic car to a discount paint shop.
Sad story. Now you can strip it down and do it yourself, and have real pride in doing it yourself correctly
Take it to a self-service car wash to pressure wash those paint bubbles and they will pop causing the paint to then be in peeling condition which is covered under warranty.

Even if he had taken it magically to another country, they would charge him a lot because, well it looked like trash before, all uneven... They would have to sand to metal and fill any holes, dings, etc...

the news people are as ignant as the owner, making a story into this. this is embarrassing for all involved parties.
I bought a 1957 Buick that had been in the same family from new. I live in Scottsdale Arizona we are the classic car headquarters of America and we are the home of Barrett Jackson is well as several other classic car auctions and collections. I was told my vehicle was probably worth 10 thousand dollars in the shape it was in. Depending on how authentic I was going to restore it would decide the actual value. I took it to a paint shop that does many of the hi dollar card for the auction and the collectors. I was quoted $16,000 for it. And I signed the paper. I was guaranteed this car would pop! I took it to an auto upholstery restoration company. Another $15,000 to restore including the headliner and carpet and using the original Fabric. After that I went to a mechanic classic restoration Inc. to have the car completely rebuilt to factory specs. Altogether I was in the car $57,000 but it was factory fresh. Just out of curiosity I sent it to the auction. $72,000 and I turned it down. I’m going to hold onto it for a few years just to enjoy it!
IT HAS TO BE STRIPPED TO EVER BE CORRECTED
Lol not at maaco they just touch up over the paint they sprayed
I know guys like this... they expect a lot for a little.. means they're CHEAP.. He got EXACTLY what he paid for... Now take the car to a restore shop, let them keep the car for 7 years, taking it apart, changing you $20,000 per year, storage and handling, plus the shop will probably go out of business or change hands 3 times... AND..... AND.... the same guy that painted your car ar Maaco, will paint your car this time. STUPID..
I couldn't have said it ANY better..... Applauds 👏
I'm cheap too; therefore, I amateur paint my own for cheaper and better than this.

@donjuan7597 As soon as he started backing it out of the garage that’s all I could think. Don’t get me wrong still a beautiful Caddy, but I’m not a 4dr guy.
Maaco is the first problem. $3500. for body work and paint for that size car was a heck of a deal. Also, there are many things that can cause this problem. Just a couple of examples that I've experienced over the years are... Waxing the car too soon or using a fast drying clear coat. If the finish gets sealed off too soon it can't breathe and that definitely will create bubbles. I've seen it happen so many times. The only thing that fixes a problem like that is to strip it back down and start over. That's the very reason I've told my customers not to wax paint. If you're wanting that extra shine, use a polish instead.
Finger print grease and bad prep
Good advice, thanks!
Had the exact same paint bubbles happen to a vintage car I painted. Ended up being that the Sealer coat attacked the original lacquer paint job that was used in the early days. Most shops will use a sealer coat and then top it with urethane paint. Sealer is a good thing although, in my experience, it ate the original lacquer-based paint.
First mistake.going to Macco second mistake taking a classic car to Macco and third mistake Macco...even here in ontario macco had a bad reputation..
I’m surprised a guy would take a car like that to Maaco.
It’s almost a joke. Clueless dummy!
I once worked for a cut rate shop like this. In a good day, we'd run 12-14 cars through the line. Truth is, for an old beater of a car, truck, horse trailer, you really get your money's worth. But for a classic never go to a shop like this.
exactly !!! maaco is fine for respray to freshen a car or weekend cruiser but not for a a classic restoration
not for 3,500......thats a 600.00 hack job....lol
That’s the issue he went to maico … that franchise is good for beater cars
For best results one must go to a specialized shop for classic cars
it is obviously a preparation problem, In my life, I painted many cars and never had that problem but you can be sure that I sanded and degreased them in depth before applying any coating ( primer or top coat.)
I'd be tempted to say to leave it alone for a while and drive the car as it is to give the chance to all problematic spots to show and treat them individually.
You pay the cheapest prices, you get the cheapest materials, you still get what you pay for like you always have

@@kingargon damn, that's a hell of a thing to have happened while painting. Were you just out of prison??
Let me start with this, you need to completely dismantle a car like this for a restoration. Also, when you strip the paint from a vehicle, you bring it down to bare metal. You need to apply epoxy primer or something similar for corrosion protection so things like this don’t happen. Then you perform your body work then prime it, block it out straight, then refinish. Since they kept the old paint finish on the car and painted over that, the bubbles were bound to happen. The bubbles are the two paint jobs causing a chemical reaction along with adhesion issues that results in the bubbles. The techs at that shop aren’t trained on classic car restoration. Long story short, you get what you pay for when going to Maaco. Go to a real restoration shop where you will pay upwards of 60K plus to do that car right. End of story.
Yes! Strip to bare metal is the best way to go. Even new panels I get in with that EDP coating, I take that stuff off as well. I've seen slight rust under that coating. Get down to the bare foundation.

60 grand? Hell no, I will take my car to Maaco. I can buy 2 new cars for that money.
Exactly. Probably original enamel paint that reacted with the new paints solvents.
I see a lot of orange peel in the finish, too. It needs to be taken down to nothing, and done properly, no putty! Use duraglass. Feather fill, and block sand, primer, paint, and clear coat. Remove all dust between each step from the car, and from the stall. The smallest amount of particulate matter or water will wreck a paint job.
Why the hell would you take anything you care about, to Maaco? 🤦♂️
Looks pretty good for only 3500$ !!!
Like i said a paint job especially with body work like that would be 15-20$ or more. Paint and supplied could easily exceed 2000$ pretty quickly.

Chuck, Chuck, Chuck… MAACO?!?!? I have three words for you… NOOOOOO!!!
I just had a classic car painted, the supplies costs twice what you paid in total for your whole car’s paint job and body work.
I completely stripped my car and prepped (probably saving $10,000+) and the paint job was still a little over $25,000… and that was the “bargain” price charged by a little old man in a dilapidated building that looks like it’s going to collapse any second. Had any other custom shop done the job, It would have been, minimum, $35,000 (again, with all the prep work already completed before hand).
Did I go to the little old man because he was cheaper, well, I did… but only because he’s considered to be the best paint man in the northeast. He doesn’t advertise, it’s all word of mouth. His cars are in every major concours in the world. There are household names of car collectors that use this gentleman. World renowned resto shops use this gentleman. There’s a year and a half waitlist… IF you know somebody who knows somebody who knows him.
I’m not saying you need to spend $30k on a paint job, but good grief, Chuck!!! You want a TWENTY foot long car worth 30k to 60k with two acres of body surface to have all blemishes, rust, and body repairs made, panels lined up, and painted for $3500?!?!?
Talk to people in local car clubs, restoration shops, at car shows… ask who does good work that’s affordable. Someone will know a “little ole guy” and refer you to him.
YOU CAN NOT PAINT OVER OLD PAINT!! Prepare the car properly (strip paint, make repairs, strip trim, bumpers, etc.)… you can probably find a local kid (young man) who works at a collision shop who would help you in the evenings and weekends for short change.
Then take it to your “guy”, pay the $5000 for a quality paint job (your painter will want to reinstall the trim most likely) which will still look great 15 years down the road.
Eat the $3,500 MAACO stole from you (life’s too short).
And SHAME on you Ron for not doing your homework and knowing nothing about paint and body, yet taking on this story as if it were a roofer who shingled a house with cardboard boxes.
And Ron, what kind of Consumer Reporter are you to think a company re-ups its warranty after each warranty claim????

First of all , you can put bodywork and new paint over top old paint but that old paint underneath continues to break down an age underneath. Thats why hes having the issues. all that old paint has to be stripped to bare metal and start there. you would be well over twenty grand for that kind of work.
Yes you just can not continue to just spray over paint over a period of time, it will get the condition called "alligatoring" in that the old paint cracks.
what chemicals are used to strip the paint and how does one prevent this stuff in the first place?
@@snorttroll4379 you can use a chemical paint stripper, we use a brand called aircraft stripper. you can sand paint down to bare metal too although that takes more time. you can use somthing like eastwoods contour sct stripper tool also. stripping a car to bare metal or just going over the old paint just depends on what level of quality and expense you want to get into. taking that old paint off is always better but it just depends if thats somthing you want to take on. its labor intensive and expensive. somtimes the old paint can be too far gone and stripping is your only choice at that point. thx
what chemical is that? for people in various countries with different brands u know. @@hotrodtiki200
That’s a 10k paint job minimum to do a quality job with quality products. The paint bubbles here are probably from moisture in the body filler from wet sanding and they didn’t leave any time for it to dry so the primer didn’t stick to it.
This reminds me of a guy I used to work with. Him and a few of his buddies bought a race horse for $900 and then wondered why they never won any races. Get what you pay for.
They bought Mr. Ed for a race horse? That should have been a safe bet.
I've been painting cars for years and this is caused by them not degreasing the car. On the original paint job they probably didn't wipe the car down with wax and grease remover, and sanded some oil into the old paint. When you spray paint over an oily spot, it won't stick and will bubble up.
Good point.
I thought that would cause "fish eyes" not bubbling.
The original paint is chemically conflicting with the new paint
But, it won't squeak, either.
There are a few other possibilities though. One of the big ones is, not letting their filler and/or primer cure enough, so its releasing solvents underneath a dried surface. The other one that comes to mind is, getting body filler wet through wet sanding or washing or whatever.
My paint job on my 1970 Cadillac Convertible is running me 12,500.00 Dollars. It never crossed my mind of taking my car to Maaco🤣. I would not take my 2003 Impala to Maaco.
With paint blisters that big, i would have seen to it they were "cracked & peeling" before i had taken it back to the paint shop for that final determination.
That’s like going to your cousins house to get a tattoo because he’s cheaper than going to shop.
And your cousin is blind...
And can’t spell.
and has a busted shoulder.
I had a Maaco paint job done in the 80's. It was around $150 bucks back then. Sure enough, a couple years later it was flaking off. I didn't expect much though and it was probably worth what I paid just to make the old Datsun presentable.
My sister had her VW bug painted at Earl Scheib 29.99 special back in the 60's, she counted 367 runs in the paint, and they even painted the door handles!
@@jaya.0069 haha, forgot about Earl Scheib. I can hear his commercial in my head "I will paint any car for just $29.95". Painted the door handles for no extra charge, that's great.
A couple years later? .. Lol. Yeah, you still got your 150 dollars worth, bud..BACK THEN EVEN 👍
@@jaya.0069 😳 367 runs in the paint? On a small beetle at THAT?...HOW in TH IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE??? 😆 LOL...And I thought I RUINED an 85 Ford Ranger I painted with PPG Starthane (ya know Polyurethane AND Enamel paint they had in the 90s?) as I 2nd coated it too quickly, and ended up with about 7-8 runs/sags in that GORGEOUS '66 Chevy Madeira Maroon poly metallic paint I used on it. (Was intended for a Chevelle I HAD but, anyways). But maan! Was THAT SOB SHIIIINNNNEEE! ... 😂 LOL
@@jaya.0069 lol! My sister had a VW beetle too in 1969! An Earl Schieb paint job changed it from navy blue to hot pink! Oversized flower stickers on the front hood and she was "groovy"! 😁
Dust can cause those bubbles as well, and next time he gets it painted he needs to make sure they say it won't bubble in the warranty. I never knew warranties don't cover bubbles, hell a warranty should cover everything that has anything to do with the paint.
IF I WERE GOING TO HAVE MY 63 RANCHERO PAINTED, MAACO WOULD BE THE LAST PLACE ON MY MIND, PERIOD, HORRIBLE
PAINT JOBS, I HAD A 69 DART PAINTED IN NO. CA YEARS AGO, the paint started about 3 months later coming off on the polish rag,
worst paint job you can get, except maybe EARL Scheibs.
A friend of mine inherited his fathers Dodge pickup that was purchase new. Now of course this truck had the usual dings and dents (not excessive) and was in fair condition as far as any rust issues. Of course the paint was faded from being outside all of the time. To keep the truck looking reasonably presentable and to further preserve the body I suggested he take it to Maaco for a repaint and really to keep the cost down not to worry so much about any dent repairs (they were minor but would add to the cost of the job) Well they painted it and even did the original style pinstriping and such. Granted the shinier paint showed any dents but the object here was to get the paint in shape as the truck would most likely to continue being left outside (although after the fellow cleaned out his carport could at least be left under some cover). The truck had, had a new engine put in it and was pretty sound mechanically so in this case he had a good paid for vehicle for local driving.
That’s the best Maaco paint job I’ve ever seen.
This is why I paint my own cars and have for years. Body prep is everything and compatible materials is a must!
Lol after seeing like 2 youtube videos on it im ready to paint my cargo van. Currently it has a ton of damage from previous owners vinyl wrap. Melted weather stripping on windshield. Chisel marks going down to the metal all along edges of the car. Absolutely cracked and extemely chipped hood. Literally spray painting it with mailbox paint would make it look better. Lol anyways back to my question for you. Im not wanting a clear coat that will faill in a year or 2. I also dont think i need a 10 year clear coat. What is a solid clear coat to use that will leave a good finish and is cost effective. Or is the gap between mid quality and high quality small enough that it would be worth it to get the best clear coat. From the vides ive seen the people are usually saying “im using this because i have it on hand but i do t recommend using this clear coat as it lays down like crap and has other issues”
I do my painting myself on a classic car they charge 10,000 plus . I take pride in my prep work
Bingo! Minor Body work and paint isn’t rocket science, just a lot of work. Over the years I’ve gotten better, but there is a reason top paint jobs cost so much and that is many, many hours of prep labor. The paint is just the icing on the cake
@@alfavulcan4518 Absolutely! Hours of prep is where the quality shows.
@@koniko169 The main thing is to make sure ALL of your materials are compatible. I always use a 2 stage urethane paint job. It's mid range but I've shot some that looked show quality. Hours and hours of prep work is key and always shoot a guide coat to find minor flaws. It's tedious but sooo worth it.
So if they only cover cracking and peeling then make the bubbles crack by hand then take it in there
Anyone taking a car to Maaco has to know what they will get. A proper repaint on a car like that should easily cost 10-15 thousand dollars with body work and such. Some times the saying " You get what you pay for " is true.
I own a restoration shop, for $3500 I would not even be able to strip the car to bare metal. In the photos, it was not stripped, that is why there are paint issues. The old paint is a bad foundation, just like you would never build a house on a bad foundation, you should never paint over an old substrate. To do that car right it should be more like $35,000, not $3,500! The man got EXACTLY what he paid for, GARBAGE!
35000 for a paint job?!
@@dmjsra04 Obviously you can't read! Maaco just painted over the old junk paint, that is why there are problems. $35K includes stripping all the old material, properly removing all the trim and reinstalling, fixing all the dents and rust, and putting quality fillers and primers on the car to make it arrow straight. You do all that so that you don't have paint issues. None of this did Maaco do. Plus, sanding and buffing the car to a mirror finish, so yes, $35K! You sir, live in a dream world!
@@68pongto I’m living in a dream world and you’re charging 35k for that. Get real. Lol.
What did that guy expect from a name brand that is well-known for its substandard work and shady practices? With a car like that, he cheaped out big time where he shouldn't.
35k for a paint job? That’s absolutely ridiculous even for a perfect paint job you are not paying anywhere near that at a good shop. You can restore a whole car from the ground up for 35k 😂
I remember when I was a teen back in the 70's. Walked outside one morning and saw my neighbor painting his car with a paint brush and 3 gallons of flat white house paint. Lol it looked pretty good from 10 feet away. 😂😂😂
🤣😂😁😆
Haha I have a similar memory
I used to paint houses with someone, and his work van had a bunch of rust between his door and running boards. So scraped off the rust, put some rubber molding on with some adhesive caulking, then we painted it white with our trim paint lol. Not our proudest moment, but it held up fine for years until it was time to scrap the whole van 😆 do not do it on anything other than a beater work vehicle.
People did some crazy stuff back in the 70s lol but we had alot of fun doing it
@@AlexKunstar MY BEST FRIEND AND I PAINTED HIS 40 PLYMOUTH WITH PAINT BRUSHES AND USED BOAT ENAMEL, IT WAS A GOOD 15 FOOTER, LOOKED AS GOOD AS THIS JOB DID AND NOT EVEN 1 AIR BUBBLE! WE WERE 17 AND HE HAD NO MONEY, WE GOT OUR MONEYS WORTH, THE WHOLE JOB COST HIM ABOUT 25 BUCKS. He really got his $ worth, we worked on it straight for about 24 hours.
I have to say despite the paint issue, that is a beautiful Cadillac.
MAACO - The close ups show that Maaco quality. This is on him for going to them with a car like that.
Why would you take it to Maaco?
Cause he’s a cheapskate
First thing I said to myself was that this car was not taken down to the metal. I take all my cars down to there so I know what I'll be working on. I just stripped a '71 Mark III and if I charged myself for that alone it would have been 7500 bucks.
You can see on the receipt it was not stripped. Only had minor dings and rock chips repaired. You can see in the photo the old lacquer paint is still on there. NOTHING is going to bond to that. It has to be stripped to bare metal. I refuse any paint job pre 1995 who refuse to have it striped for this very reason. This is how it will end up.
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP exactly. that lacquer has to be taken all the way off.
Choosing Macco was the only thing that is wrong in this video.
Let's not even mention the orange peel visible in every close-up of the bubbles.
Quality work, great price, or quick turn around. Pick one of three. In this case - he selected a great price.
It's two of the three. You can have any two of the three but never all three at once.
That paint job looks absolutely great for what he paid.
I thought the same, some people are so ignorant its unbelievable, a "professional" paint job for a classic caddy like that could be 30+ grand, this guy doesnt have a clue
In Europe you pay 20 grand for such a paint job!
Time for an eye doctor.
@@RT-tn4ry can you do a better job for $3500? Of course not, you dope.
@@SonnyGTA I absolutely could do a better job , high as a kite too.
The moment I saw Maaco I came to the comments and I can see everyone has the same thoughts. Yeah, Macco is good for a 15 year old daily driver car. For a classic collector car you need to bring it to a company that specializes in classic car restoration. The proper paint job for that car would be more like $10,000 on the low end but realistically it would be $15,000-$20,000. That means every door jam, under the hood and trunk. Hell only cheaper paint job would be Earl Schibes. LOL
I’m surprised maaco even accepted the job.
With Maaco it really depends on the owner and if he cares that the employees have ever painted before. The one I went to I checked over the cars they finished, talked to a few that had previous work done and made the decision. The job turned out pretty good and still on the car 10 years later. Same owners at that location too.
maaco is the fast food restaurant of body shops. you can't buy a fish sandwich from McDonald's and have it taste like lobster. just like u can't pay a few grand for a maaco paint job and expect 20k results.
The story shouldn't be the bad paint job, it should be the bad owner that took it to Maaco.
Bwaaaaaaaaa as soon as I seen Maaco I was like really dude. First off $3500 to fix and repaint all over is a joke. You get what you pay for. I'm sorry this guy was looking for the cheapest way to go to get his classic redone.
I had a friend who did body work at Maaco they pay 40% commission, he said that the work order he got might say $500 when the customer actually paid $800, He managed to snag an unused work order from the office it has several copies with carbon paper in between, Funny thing is the section where body labor goes there's no ink on the carbon paper so they can write any amount they want later.
The bad paint around the door key hole is utterly disgusting. How would they even let a car out of the shop like that.
This is laughable!! If you want a quality paint job on a classic car you certainly don't take it to Maaco.
If you're going to get into the auto restoration hobby my advice is do as much as you can. Bodywork is 85% of the project and it's not that hard (it's dirty and time consuming though). If you do the stuff that no one wants to do and do it right you won't have a problem. Talk to other hobbyists and see who they would trust to paint their car. I've been selling auto refinish supplies for over 30 yrs and if you use the products properly you will get good results. The issue looks like poor surface prep and a sealer issue. The only way to fix it would be to strip the car and start from scratch
The paint is also completely orange peeled. This is what happens when you go to Meiko or Earl Scheib for a paint job. These places are meant for painting, hot cars, or people that just can only afford the bare minimum of a paint job. I worked at one of these places as a kid and I was given 15 minutes to sand a car for paint.
A good, full paint job with body work is typically at least $10,000 at the shop where I'm at. We do however take off fenders, take out glass, etc, etc. You pay for what you get when it comes to this
