I think it might work better over another color, like purple or a deep red. This is pretty, but I think it would really *pop* more over something not-black.

I personally think the effect is way too strong. I would go insanely low pigment load, maybe 5 grams of microflake per gallon, and mix in some nice black pearl to darken it, to spread out the flake more, to fully get the galaxy effect. You could try this on a speed shape, just to see how it would look.

The more flake you add the lighter it makes the paint because you have more reflective surfaces.

As a professional auto painter with 40 years experience I would call it an experiment. The biggest issue is the spray gun that uses old HVLP technologies to spray a car . That type of spray gun came out in the early 1990's that was introduced by 3M. It was a green plastic gun and hose and we called it the garden hose. I tried it once and is sucks. It sprays the paint like a house paint system and globs it on to the panel with out enough atomization to break up the paint into a finer pattern. I painted many street and show cars and motorcycles and would have not let it go looking like that. It needed to be color sanded and at least 2 - 3 coats of clear put on it. Then color sanded and buffed.

I once read a sci-fi story where a ship intended for special operations had, among other things, a top layer of paint meant to be visually indistinguishable from the stars behind it. I saw something similar way back in the 80’s, the flake wasn’t as intense as you have.
Devilbiss did a special paint cup for the old JGA suction gun, just for painting flake, it had a flapper inside that would agitate the flake, I have a NOS one somewhere.
Alternatively, chuck some 3/8 bearings into the bottom of the cup, it helps to stir up the flake like a rattle can.

I can see that there is a lot of color reflecting off the flake, and overall I like the spectrum of colors its giving off. My question is that if you maybe would have used less, like maybe 1 bag/gallon, allowing the flakes to lay flat on the surface and ultimately not atop each other to give a more uniform color refraction, and then apply more layers for more coverage, then maybe the colors would be more like a color change chameleon effect, as opposed to the full color spectrum reflections at the same time?!?

The picture you guys showed from the website is like the most stock of stock pictures for that particular glitter / pigment. I have seen that same image on so many different websites especially wish and Temu.

  • @despite-best-intentions

Rating it 5 because I've already sprayed my truck this same before seeing the video and yes I still like it the good part about the holographic flake is you still get that effect over other colors better than most I think when not doing full cover love your channel btw I've gotten and used a lot of ideas from you guys

I love this, I'm a sucker for rainbows and glitter. I love how it lays out the rainbow properly, instead of having the effect scattered. I do recognize that this effect will be better in person as it's trick to film

I think the idea behind the Galaxy theme is to have Negative Space between flakes or Stars… not to have them on top of one another! In my opinion you overdosed the mix!!! 2 bags would of had desired effect of a Galaxy 🌌

I agree with what most have said about going with less flakes having more of an appeal than the end result. This makes me think of the texture black sand paper. But it still looks decent.

  • @abydosianchulac2
    @abydosianchulac2 Před rokem +8

This would be a 2 for me, solely because the flake is too dense. The thing about galaxies is they're mostly empty space, so the effect you were getting at first where the stir stick was mostly visible was on the right track. You just had to remember that the transparency would be filled by the black base. That said, I don't think I'd have even liked it that much then because it was more colorful than I'd have wanted, but definitely worth the experiment.

I kinda like it, and I honestly didn't think i would but but it has that wild 5ft 10ft 20ft effects. From 5 ft you see solid individual colors and from 10ft it blends together great and almost gives it the shimmery holographic effect and from 20ft the colors blend together to give it a sparkly satin effect.

if you really want a galaxy look start with the black undertone as dark as you can get it. And then use an almost clear coat with maybe 10 or 20 grams per gallon of that pigment. It will spread out the stars in the night sky and make each twinkle just a little brighter

I fell like youtube video compression leaves a lot to be desired but still looks pretty cool. Probably way nicer in person. Pigment load unnecessarily high. I enjoy a black car with a hint of flake or shift. But hey, that is what experimentation is all about! Love that you are able to provide this to the community.

    3.
I dont love or hate it.
Super subtle compared to my initial expectation of the flake.
I think it would be cool in a Chromacoat or in a black cherry or a maroon.
But to really pop, maybe do a 50G/Vantablack combo?🤔
And I wonder if the Vanta would eat the flake?
    (Future projects 🤷‍♂️)

Came into the video with thoughts of the Musou black with the hypershift over top car, thinking it would look similar. It's definitely different but not bad. I like that it's subtle from afar but really bold up close, I would love to have that on a car. 6/5

It looks nice based on the pigment of the flake and has a color of blackish tone to it. I think if you brought in like a pearl that has blue or purple and add a dark cloud of sprinkles on top to darken it up. That kind of be cool.

Nicely done guys! Pros. But yeah (2) 10oz would be the max on pigment. The translucent flakes are a little much on the eyes. Looks like a 1 acre live concert (view from the GoodYear BLIMP) with all the little heads bouncing around. Looks like that.

After 10 coats of clear it will be ok, as it is its a 1 for me. I just achieved the same effect with tri color green/silver/purple metalflake on my boat over black base and about 10 coats of clear 2k.

I really had no idea what to expect in this case.
It’s interesting - from a far it seems to be hardly noticeable. From closeup it’s nice that it’s so much more flaked than I had expected („sparkle per Square cm“). But frankly, for a „space“ or „galaxy“ look it would have needed to to be fewer but bigger sparkles.
    What do I think?
    Hard to say.
Initially (photo from website) I loved the idea. But would I buy this now, after seeing it? No idea.
