In this video, I show the basics of wiring for a hotrod, drift car, ratty muscle car or race car. I include how I wired a GM 3-wire 10si / 12si Alternator, along with a 12v automotive fuse box and a starter circuit. I used 200A Cole Hersee Relays power the fuse box and the starter. I discuss the differences between a continuous use vs non-continuous use solenoids, and the importance of using diodes. In general, this video covers car wiring, race car wiring, alternator wiring, automotive wiring, how to wire a car, car wiring basics, wiring a car, fuse box wiring, hotrod wiring, and ratty muscle car wiring.

Can you explain how to add an ignition coil to this setup? Specifically with points and condenser
I am really gathering alot of knowledge from your videos.could you do some videos for land Rover defender 110 90s version kindly.Thank you.
what if you have a one wire alternator , whats procedure for that
So I bought these exact items, and wired it to the t how you explained however I still get 12 volts on my fuse panel with or without the master shut off or ignition switch on or off....any idea what I'm doing wrong? No alternator hooked up yet either
Don’t ever take this video down.
😂 I won’t! Don’t worry. I’ll just make more cool ones. Thanks for watching.
Man i know this can be a daunting task at times but please please keep this stuff up. Ive learned so much from your videos. Sometimes its hard to retain stuff especially if you dont use it all the time. With this you have allowed refresher courses for me. Thank you again for your time and efforts. God bless!! Sam
If people keep watching - I will absolutely keep making them. It’s always fun to see it work when I’m done! Lol
Can you please make a wiring video on how to by pass pre heating timer, i got a 92 4runner 2LT engine and a busted pre heating timer, i cannot start my truck since last year, i cannot find a replacement pre heating timer for my truck. Thanks.

Right!? Tell your friends! Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate every view, like, and comment I get!
Cuz some of us keep rewatching the video 😂
Best video on CZcams ever explaining how this works! Been chasing this on my classic car.
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! Just be sure to use fuses on the big wires!
@@WiringRescue thank you!!! Now I understand , finally the mystery of electronics. Fuses, relays, switches oh my! Switched on and switched 12v! My car is a 62 ford Galaxie .how perfect with the classic ford solenoid example. Thanks for responding!
@@WiringRescue so if I have my Fuel pump and Dual fans which are on toogle switches, all 3 which have relays for each one and are fused, can I use this fuse panel for the power and ground?
13:54
Actually, the diode is there to protect all other electronic components of your car from that huge voltage spike that happens when the magnetic field collapses. The coil inside that solenoid is very sturdy and doesn't really care about voltage spikes of any kind.
Good info! Thanks for sharing it!!
yes, the infamous "back EMF"
Exactly, what probably happens without a diode is when you turn off the ignition switch there is an inductive kick which can cause a spark across the switch contacts, shortening it's life
@@petarmiletic997A baddass easy explanation
So🤔being a novice.... Should i add a diode to my existing wiring? And where
I’d just like to thank you for all your wiring videos. I’ve had a rough time grasping the concept of automotive wiring, but you make it so easy to understand. Thank you so much!!
I’m glad you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for watching them! I’ve got lots more coming. Stay tuned!
Man, this is an amazing video. I’m fairly mechanically inclined but the way you’ve worded this, on purpose or not, has made engine electrics that much clearer in my mind. Thank you for taking the time to produce such a great video. I’ll likely watch 6 or maybe 10 times.
Me too ha! #replay
This is great example of sharing information that should have been mandatory in school.
Stumbled on your account this morning as I scanned through CZcams to gather info on re-wiring an old van. This is by far the most informative and useful video I have seen. Thank You.
That’s awesome! I’ve got lots more too if you find yourself bored this evening! Thanks for watching and sharing the great compliment! It made my day!
This is my new go-to channel for answering "I dont know you just have to" questions. Already seen a few things I knew you had to do because "they" say so. But had no idea what it does.
Haha! I’m glad I’m able to answer some of those questions! Thanks for watching! More great stuff on the way!
I have been trying to figure out my problem for weeks. 1962 Land Rover rebuild. Dynamo to Alternator conversion. Glass bulb in the dash for charge light. Diode fixed it. This is the best video on the internet that I could find that explains with such a fantastic visual. Liked and Subscribed! Thanks.
Heck yes! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful! Old Land Rovers are super rad, so I’m thrilled that my video had a tiny little piece of helping one out!
This video was so good.
It was like Bill Nye explains automotive electrical. Really well done, thank you for making this.
Haha! Thank you! I really appreciate that!
This is a perfect example of how it all works. So anyone could learn to work on a car or at the very least figure out if it's a bad ground or a faulty part.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Dude I'm learning so much I'm about to rewire my foxbody and no one on CZcams has anything that explains it like this ..keep this up
Awesome - I’m glad people like the videos! Feel free to share them with some friends, and I’ll keep making them!
I think you should be a teacher in universities The method is easy, fun and very, very useful. May God bless you
These wiring videos are invaluable. It's nice to understand the how and why. I'm watching again, trying to troubleshoot a no charge issue. Suspect of my exciter wire.
I was a little overwhelmed at first glance of the board but came out of it smarter lol. Saved this vid and Fuel Pump Inertia Switch Wiring for Beginners with Relay to my build folder. Salamat!
Fantastic! I’m so glad that people find these videos helpful! Good luck with your project!
I have tried to understand this stuff for years and never seen anyone explain it down to my level any better than you. I have a 1936 Plymouth coupe and the wire harness was toast. I bought a standard 12 fuse wire harness that suppose to work for most cars but mine was born a 6 volt and the starter is foot pedal. This video gave me a jump start but I see it's going to be tough.
God I wish I would have found this guy 4 years ago!

@@WiringRescue I’m preparing to wire another rat rod and without you, I would’ve never gotten it right but thankfully now I know it’ll work without burning it to the ground! So thank you
@@DegenerateFabricators That is honestly so great. Thanks for sharing it with me because it’s great motivation for me to make more videos! 🎉
@@WiringRescue I do need to ask you do you think that this system will handle running the ignition main power? so jump in turn on the toggle switch to turn on the fuse panel power and then push a button for the ignition then the fuel pump button and then hit the start button?
It all depends how much amperage your ignition system draws. You need to know those numbers to determine the fuse, switch, and wire sizes for each circuit.
I have to wire 3 different race cars and I know the very basics, but this makes things way easier!
FINALLY !
Someone who has actually used the PROPER method of installing a KILL switch !
It’s the same method I have always used to cut off EVERYTHING that could possibly continue to run a vehicle even AFTER a crash . I’ve seen shorts physically START a fuel pump or starter engage after a crash . Alternators continue running, power flows . It happens .
I love your videos .
Glad to see what seems to be younger generations commenting on your videos that they are following and hopefully using the proper methods themselves .
PS. I have always added a ground to my alternator , even single wire alternators , to help cut out frequencies that cause issues with stereo systems and fuel injection ecm issues .
Haha! Thank you! I’m glad you appreciated my wiring methods! I’m hopeful that some of these videos will give my fellow car friends a little more fun in their cars and less time chasing down weird electrical problems!
Thanks for watching and sharing your knowledge! I appreciate you taking the time to do so!
I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!! Very well done sir!!! You made this seem so simple and easy!! I think I can do it!! You have made the mystery not a mystery any longer!! Now I feel like I can also diagnose a lot of "no start no crank" issues with my vehicle! I REALLY REALLY appreciate this video! Probably one of the most important CZcams vids I have ever watched!

Awesome! Hopefully these videos are able to help out my fellow enthusiasts! Thanks for watching!
This whole series is like gold to those of us who probably have no business messing around with automotive wiring. I recently stepped off into the deep end of the pool and bought a 1929 Mercedes Benz kit car used. Mechanically, it seems to be okay, but if I put a mental image of several 10 gauge wires simple stripped, twisted together and taped over with that cheap tape, then multiply that disaster waiting to happen by way too many, and you get an idea of what I'm dealing with. I've found about half of my problems went away as I re=connected the bad connections, and the other half are rapidly going away as I watch your vids and put them to work!. I have one suggestion: My workspace for this car is off to the side of my house, far from my computer. My eyes have a hard time making out fine detail on my cell phone. I've tried drawing my own schematics as you explain them, but they look like chicken scratching even to me! A wiring diagram from He-who-knows-how-it-works wold be a very welcome addition for many of us I'm sure, and if not then I'd appreciate it enough for all of them! Many thanks for all this information, I'll send you a picture when I've got ALL the lights lit up. Won't be long now!
Thanks for watching! I would love to make diagrams, and I have before, but there are only so many hours in a day! ;) I need more time!
You know how many times I tried finding a video like this thanks easily the most useful yt video I have ever watched

This is brilliant!! I'm looking to add to and update the wiring in a 30y old van and well before I start doing anything I need to understand what's there and how it all works. I think I know, but I don't know what I don't know. Now I'm learning loads. Thanks for making and sharing!

I came across your video because I'm rewiring a '55 ford tractor. Same alternator, etc. Same difference except I don't need as many bells and whistles. Thanks a bunch for your time and effort!
These wiring tutorials are better than a college course. More entertaining and simplified for novice people. Is it possible that you might do a video on wiring dash gauges? I’m glad that you like it! And the extra kill switch is very easy to do. You could add one under your hood too if you are feeling particularly wild! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for posting this series and helping me grasp the boogeyman that is automotive wiring. Think a car is hard?? Try a 33 yr old motorhome that was wired and rewired countless times by different people, not all of them knowledgable. I have lots of accessories to account for and that's before even tackling the 120VAC side of things. Anyway, I'll be using your videos as a reference.
That sounds like a HUGE (and fun) project! Thanks for watching and good luck with the motorhome!
Yeah I should include a few key pieces of info with my question. The battery location is 9n the passenger side of the trunk with the components located on battery box in the space next to right rear tire. It goes battery, mega fuse, continuous duty solonoid, and finally starter solenoid thru the frame to starter on the same side.
Thanks for taking the time to get back.
Boy, you have to take some people right by the hand don't you.
Im one of them.
Haha! In that case - definitely have a big fuse right next to your battery between the continuous duty solenoid and the positive battery terminal. The amperage rating will depend on the total amperage draw of all of your components. I would also recommend a fuse on both ends of your alternator power wire. Since electricity flows both ways in that specific circuit, it’s nice to have it protected at both ends!
Dang i learned so much from this. One surprising thing is i learned why my alternator light turns on in my dash when i turn my key on but is of once i start the car. I always thought something must of been wired up funky but turns out it is supposed to be that way. Super cool
You are a great instructor.
Thank you for the information about automotive wiring
Excellent job! You covered pretty much every bit of the basics needed for the start/run/charging. Well explained.
I never thought of the diode across the solenoid!
If you are willing to do so, it would be worth it to make a video covering externally regulated alternators too. There's vehicles out there that still use them....or stubborn guys like me that still like them!
You do a great job on your presentation and explanation!
Back in the 70's had to learn this from black and white books , even the car mags had sepia photos. You Tube.

Killer video man! Congrats on the big views bro!!!
@NoNonsenseKnowHow - thank you so much! Also - your El Camino series was awesome! The editing of it must have taken forever!
I don't have an electrical degree either. However, I had a ham radio operator's license by my sophomore year in high school which required an advanced electronics test. Been doing automotive wiring since about 1977. I would have used an actual battery switch to simplify the project. Also, you can order continuous duty, high ampere solenoids with built in diodes or resisters to simplify wiring. I have used hundreds of them for remote switched, high power loads but never ran the starter through one and cannot recommend them for cranking amps. Your fuse panel is marine grade and is not rated for moisture or particulate intrusion. For some reason people seem to think that marine grade is superior to automotive grade and that is just not true. Also, I would suggest that race and competition type installs should follow the stricter electrical guidelines as set forth in NFPA Pamphlet 1901 for low voltage DC circuits. It has the most comprehensive guidelines in the automotive sector. My ultimate goal has always been to reduce failure points like cheap connectors, unrated equipment, and unnecessary complexity while increasing reliance through high temperature rated wire and loom, IP67 minimum rated equipment, no splicing, and bench testing of all critical components before installation. I have 30 year old installs that get pressure washed on a regular basis that are still in service. Only 2 warranty problems in those years which I treated as learning experiences. This was in a manufacturing environment, not hobby or side line stuff.
I was pleased that you called out Cole Hersey by name. The very first part of a quality installation is to use quality parts and Cole Hersey is peerless in this regard. If you think one of their products is the cause of a problem you had better check your work because that probably is the actual problem.

Nice video other than the confusion between fuse box and fuse block. You show a fuse block, but call it a fuse box. A fuse box is enclosed as with all boxes and sometimes weather sealed.
Thanks for the feedback! The fuse box/block in this video actually does come with a cover, but I didn’t want to use it in the video because it would have covered some of the wiring. Sorry about the confusion! I’ll keep that in mind for the next one!
@@WiringRescue I stand corrected. It looked like the many devices that are sold as fuse blocks and have no cover.
Very informative and great content, keep up the awesome work !
Thank you! If you keep watching, I’ll keep making them!
The voltage sense wire should go to the main power distribution point. It works ok as you have it wired when your total amperage used is relatively low, but if you have electric fans and fuel pump you'll have excessive voltage drop and run into issued with the battery not charging even when you have 13.5 volts at the alternator output.
Great info! Thank you for watching and sharing that!
So you'd want the voltage sense on the power input on the fuse block, or the positive post on the battery?
🇺🇸Battery in trunk. Cable from battery to starter dead except when cranking. Read MAD electrical for info.
@@WiringRescue; What Kris said is right, where would that wire need to be ran according to your video?
Fantastic explanation! You are a great teacher, I learned so much in this great 20 minute video! Thank you, just subscribed!
The best informative video, Well explained with perfect examples.
