Am I crazy for spending hours in emulators just punching in random Game Genie codes to see what happens?
I used to do this on my actual Game Genie, and unfortunately came up with cool effects in games that I didn't write down in my notebook that I filled with Game Genie codes, like one time I was messing with Ninja Gaiden 2 and got the parallax train stage background scrolling to occur in the first stage, which looked both cool and severely messed up at the same time.
i once entered a GG code on SMB1 and everything Mario touched give him a mushroom. too bad i did not write down the code
Yeah that's what's tough about creating codes on the real hardware - there's no way to see what you entered after you try it out. It's so nice to have tools like FCEUX and ROM Maps to work with today!

So in 4-2.. are you aware that there is a potion in the middle of the level, where the three pillar platforms are? You can take that one to the warp pipe and its so much easier than taking the first one all the way across. Use the first one to get a mushroom, second one to go to the warp.
If you time it just right you can get a life per spin on the Bandit.
Basically press as soon as you hear the ‘spin noise’ and you’ll get a cherry 🍒 on the first wheel every time.

Great Video Gruz!! Glad to see this old classic being tweeked again. I have been gamegenie tweaking around with 1, 2 and 3 smb lately and made my own list with some pretty crazy stuff. How fun, however, some times ya don't always get so lucky with randomly throwing in letters but most gems, I've noticed, will show up from tinkering letter by letter with the ones that can totally crash the game. But I'm sure you knew that already Lol Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks Derek! Yeah there are a lot of different ways to go about finding codes. My best ones always seem to be when I enter random stuff, but I also look for a disassembly or ROM maps so I know where to poke around. Fun stuff!

I also noticed with the script that randomizes the everything for smb1 will also kinda get certain codes to jump start into working but then again, it's then been even more messed up by the script, however it's then a somewhat working code that would normally crash the game. Very fun stuff indeed. Btw where did u get that usb nes controller? Or did you modify it to work?
@@derekengler9216 Just a Tomee brand NES to USB adapter. Can't get any better than the actual NES controller!

Game Genie codes actually have a 1 in 256 chance of affecting mapped memory regions and in even is possible to posses the same value as another location and so it is possible to run into problems with compare addresses.
Even more amusingly, I was the 256th like for this video.
the door to warp 6 SCARED me too, I recall if you were small or ducked, you COULD access it, but in the heat of the moment... yeah.
"Pattern recognition!" At the same time both of us said it on 4-2... And I LOVE how you tried SO HARD not to curse, and then you lost the potion and swore hard! "My controller F*-ed up." Famous last words. (God I gotta quit commenting, but this is the greatest!!!! Now must do my own video, will send link if you care to bother to watch)

Gruz, in 4-2, there's 2 potions in the whale area, there's a part with 7 veggies, 1 of which is that 2nd potion. You did this shit the hard way.
I knew it man! When I was editing this I thought I remembered there might be another potion there but I wasn't sure. It's been a few years since I've played through it... (I still blame my controller for that mess tho)

Mario 2: Kaizo Edition Hack. Also the secret to the slots is pressing B as fast as you can by as close to the first frame of the slots spinning but it can be very tricky to pull off. Ive hit three 7s many times by doing that and collected many lives, even hit 99 lives and after got glitched lives.
the interesting thing with the altered enemies is... that they still have unique styles of moving over all acting the same! pink shy guys and pink snifits usually jumps about without chasing ya... red shy guys and probably red snifits do chase ya, and tweeters? they just keep going forward til they meet a wall, before turning around. oddly... pokeys and cobrats has their speeds swapped as well!
And the jumping guys never accidentally jump off of places, even when they chase you, it's very intimidating.
Now that I think of it this was the first time I played slots myself as well 7 or 8

That is weird, for what I know game genie can change only ram memory and in order to make an enemy chase the player you need several lines of code, how can you do that only with a code?.

yes, there is slippery sand... it is made out of glass, and is used for playing on shuffleboard tables... another that is used in sandblasting...

I'm a little confused why in 4-2 when the "controller" (wink, wink) messed up, why didn't you just go back through the door on the cloud back and forth to reset everything? Great video as usual though. :)
