- KNIZKN, makes it so you have to run from the left to right of the screen to progress
- ZIGPSK and EIGPSK behave similarly in that they switch around levels and change their attributes
I’m not good enough at SMB that I’d be able to enjoy challenge codes. This was fun to watch!
Interesting.... this code seems to really scramble variables, mixing up X and Y positions and other values with the Y acceleration variable and so much more by pulling info from basically every "mobile" sprite in the displayed region... messing stuff up so much so randomly it may indeed hit the timer, as seen here, or otherwise outright crash things (probably due to overflow / underflow, what have you.)
What an absolute mess of a code. Neat!
I'm super late to this response, but the timer stopping and crash from going too high is actually weirdly interesting.
The game checks to see if Mario is on vertical screen 00 (the screen above the usual visible play area) or 01 (the visible play area), and if he's not on either of those, the timer doesn't move. This is to make it so the timer can't kill Mario once he falls past the bottom of the screen (since he enters screen 02+ if he goes below.)
When Mario goes high above the screen, the screen number wraps around to FF and the game considers him below the main area, therefore pausing the timer. The higher Mario goes, the more the number goes down from FF after that, and once he hits a certain point (Screen 05, I believe), the game considers him dead due to falling, which is what crashed the game on one of Gruz's attempts due to the code reacting badly with Mario dying/taking damage.

Funny, I've never actually looked too far into how Super Mario Bros. works, so this was a pretty awesome primer on at least one aspect of it and what happens when things, well, get weird.

Hey KillGruz, here is a tip for you:
If you use a game genie code that puts you in a softlock, you can do a soft reset in emulators (or press the reset button on a real NES) and you can A + Start continue.
The only catch is that this works on a Super Mario Bros. standalone cart, not Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt.
That’s really cool, didn’t know that! I mainly use the Mario/DH cart though cause that’s what most people have.

I did some attempts with this code and I can safely say that it is impossible to beat the game due to the underwater room in 8-4 booting you back to the title screen for some reason. I'm currently uploading my best run on my BRO3256 channel but I'll link it in the replies once it is done uploading.

Try the code ANGUST it makes any block you hit will disappear even if you are small mario
or try the code KITTYL , jumping on enemies sometimes kills you, you can only get fire flowers by jumping in the middle of them, and you can walk through most enemies, you can only kill enemies with the fire flower

For mario yes. Yet every nintendo game has crazy stuff like this because of game genie. Very time consuming stuff though.

I don’t understand why there is a lot of Mario codes but Mega Man 2 doesn’t have codes like YEAAAA or PIGPOG.

@@itsgruz They're a bit different; there are up to 5 lines and there are both letters and numbers involved. I've come up with some great codes for a number of Genesis games.
Now try these codes with the Duck Hunt half.

i dont know this one seems touch but for the wrong reason. When the game can cause a random game freeze like that i consider it too unstable to be a challenge personally it would just drive me crazy lol 🙂. i enjoyed the video and will probably give it a go myself though

While I DO love this channel, I cannot stand the way gruz tries to pronounce random garbled codes as actual words. Like PFKSITY.....pfksity? Dude, that's not even CLOSE to a word, for example. To me, that makes less sense than most of the codes.
