Invisible blocks at the end of platforms? Definitely a rom hack from the early days.
It looks even worse with the way SMB1 has you not the invisible blocks unless you're mostly centered under them- resulting in all those situations where you try to lean over one space, check for one, find nothing, then do a proper jump and bump right into it. And it's always over a pit. It's a shame, because these hacks look okay otherwise, if a bit on the hard side with all the early hammer bros and firebars.
Not sure why anybody ever thought this was a fun gameplay decision, even back then. It basically ruins the entire experience.
At least it's a clouds area mode where you are actually exting the area falling down but takes you back to the beginning of the clouds area, so you're not dying losing a life.
Or any given troll level in Mario Maker, for that matter.
Updated your profile pic 🤣
I played sooooo many ROM hacks in the early 2000s. I have a strong feeling I played these around 2002-2003.
Every time a troll block was hit, I laughed.
Nothing screams "Game Design? Who needs that!?" like invisible blocks.
Snarky nerd voice: "Yeah game developers, get it together"
Glad I'm not the only one who hates those blocks lmao
I believe AVGN calls the awful placement of invisible blocks "inviso-bitches".
Maybe Killgruz can't recommend the game, but I recommend this type of content
Now and forever Gruz is going to feel above his head before he jumps.
Man, this hack was disappointing to watch. Good on ya for sticking with it!
you point out that link's not wearing any pants, then wonder what he looks like "with fireballs". i mean... :)
Thanks for the great video, killgruz! When you're dealing with NES/SNES rom hacks from the 90's and early 00's it's always a dicey proposition as most of them suck. These days it's common knowledge that troll blocks are universally hated, but back then this dude probably thought he was being clever or funny or something. Just my guess. Or he's just an ass.
Back then I assume it was more about being like "Woah, a New Mario game made from Mario 1!" focus on just having fun rather than thinking about the game design when playing or making these.
Imagine having an invisible block at the top of the staircase leading to the castle thinking you finally made it through the level!
The final boss would've probably been made of hidden blocks anyway.
Good ol' Gruz
killgruz: "Raysyde, I'm gonna need you to fire up YY again and take out those invisible blocks"
Raysyde: "ok" *takes out only the ones you need to cross impossible jumps*
Lol invisible blocks are ur friends
The easy way around those invisible blocks is to jump slightly sooner than they expect you to jump.
Thanks for the patience dude, definitely no fun with those invisible blocks, just cheap deaths. NO FUN!
I recommend the game Super tux. Pretty much a Mario clone with the Linux 🐧 as the main player. The games still in construction but had been for sometime. The game fully open source so anybody could modify the game if they wanted to or add new levels to contribute.
Those invisible blocks in the first game are sometimes referred to as Troll Blocks

Not sure if you have seen this one, but someone has made a new nes emulator for the snes. Using a super wildcard. Its not running perfect yet though I thought it was cool
Kaizo blocks are hilarious
amazing!
i wish it was night time forever so that life would just go away. At least your videos cheer me up though.
Hey Herman
Adult Link is missing an 80s porn stache like MARIO 😎😂
Sometimes you need the invisible blocks to get by certain areas
What was the fire color scheme for Luigi? I was rwally hoping to see it.
Where can these be found on NES cart? I see the 45 in 1 Mario NES cart doesn't have these. I'm actually just interested in The Link Adventures.
All these years later and what do people put in their Mario Maker troll levels? That's right-inconveniently placed invisible blocks. So much has changed, and yet so little has changed.
Theres a Game genie for gameboy. If theres enough codes to work with, maybe you can make game genie videos on super mario land 1 and super mario land 2. It would be a cool video idea.
gruz went a bit AVGN in this episode haha
If I hit that thing one more time, I'm throwing the controller at the screen!
These would be so cool to have on actual nes carts
Only to then slam them into a wall.
Killgruz you should review super mario bros x! It's a really great rom hack/fan game, if you haven't played it already. I played only version 1 so I don't know how version 2 is, though from what I've seen they added a lot.
SMBX isn't a rom hack! It's a fan made engine that let's you make your own Mario games!
Cool
Interesting
14:59 Ouch!!
More Super Mario Bros Codes!
Cool ngl doe
21 second gang.
I don't get how someone can spend hours making a Rom hack, but litter it with kaizo blocks ensuring few even bother to see their work
MORE
You don't need to take out the curse words, I'm okay with them.
those little invisible bastards are called "kaizo" blocks. i think kaizo means something like asshole in japanese but you probably already knew all that lol
just like how nintendo stole mario maker from redigit!
Second.
Do people still joke about this anymore?
I hate hacks like this, with hidden blocks placed like that all over the place. If that is the number one way of dying, then it's not a good hack.
Codes for suppa maryu broshhh...
:D
Mix codes
SSASSA+GNATUE
Enimies follows you
EVYIVY+GAGOTO
Enimies are trampoline (the skin is still enimies skin not trampoline's skin)
YSAAAA+PPPPPP+PEGEIE
Hardcore Impossoble crazy weird world
Haha
Super Boy/Bioman games for the MSX is better.
Please play sonic 1 and try to make sonic game
Hi
Well see first of all bro, when they put especially invisible blocks like the ones you're running into and it's aggravating you.. this is a video game it's not supposed to be easy it possibly be hard aggravating and at the same time fun if it wasn't then what's the point of playing.. that's why you see people when they get mad they throw the remote and stuff like that it's because that's the whole point of playing video games they're made so you would fuck up killgru. And if this is something that you can't do or it's a problem to you then my advice is don't play these video games stick to Tetris or something
Am I the only one who lost enjoyment because of his griping on the kaiso blocks? Whining not only at the time, but minutes after, and in the next game.
The point isn't to make you test every area, but partially a prank, plus an artificial replay value, having you replay areas so it's not just luck getting through.
I mean, they're frustrating, but I've never heard anyone go on about it. At least AVGN makes it entertaining.
Only complaint I've had so far, keep up the good work, otherwise
They are so cheap and are only there to waste our time! Time is the most important thing we have... You're witnessing genuine frustration - I hate those blocks so much and always will! 🤯
