Calathea Import: Gone Wrong Then Right

  • This is a story time video about three calathea that I imported at the beginning of 2021. All three went into shock. See my calathea the day that they arrived from Indonesia and then today, along with all of their dead leaves and new growth. Ever had an imported or shipped plant go into shock? In this video, I show how these three calathea went from dying back to the soil surface to re-growing their leaves within about five months. In my next videos, I hope to show you where my collection is at, plant by plant, and what I plan to do to repair some of the damage that happened last year.
    *I am in the process of trying a new filming and editing process--so this video has some audio and transition issues. That said, I hope to keep streamlining and improving the process. I hope it doesn't affect your experience too much.*

      Thank you! 😊 The Silver Plate is growing and growing and is just absolutely beautiful and I'm in such shock. I never thought I would have one and imagined if I got one--it would shrivel right up. I am so glad I did get these plants and so happy that they bounced back.

    I have missed your content so much! Welcome back and what a timely video!! I ordered a very large calathea illustris from an USA etsy seller to add to my collection and it spent over 2wks in shipping here to the Northwoods this summer. Surprisingly it looked minimally stressed when it arrived in Aug, but one by one these gorgeous leaves have been shriveling up and dying. I'm down to 4 very large but damaged looking leaves and until yesterday had seen no new growth - but now see 2 little growth points. YAY!!! I'd heard of other calathea parents having plants die back but never experienced that myself - until now. Thanks for showing us the lovely and the challenges about growing these beauties. You have by far the best, most practical calathea content online! Anyone who's cared for a calathea for over 3 months will know there WILL be ups and down and in particular your video on leaf problems and the ranking videos as well as dealing with spider mites are sooooo practical! Thank you for all the hard work you put into filming and editing the content. The calathea hobbyists of youtube have missed you! :D

      Thank you! 😊 Oh, it is SO stressful to see the plant die back to the soil. That new growth is just such a relief once it comes up. The Illustris is so beautiful and I'm glad that yours is bouncing back! I hope you get lots of new growth ASAP. It can be hard to know right away what kind of stress the plants are in after shipping but thankfully calathea can be pretty resilient.

    They all look amazing now & what a journey well worth it. I only own one a white fusion and she is stunning although not the biggest, it looks like 3 or 4 now very young plants now which is a surprise for me and to be honest I am too scared to repot it in fear of killing it. I am confident with all my others in my collection but not this one, so glad I found your channell. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh, the fusions can be sensitive, that's for sure--and absolutely gorgeous. I just repotted my Makoyana and it went better than I thought, but I was nervous and completely understand being worried about harming the plant. 😊

    I’m so glad you’re back. I was worried! I love calatheas but they aren’t sure they love me. I keep trying though. My fourth medallion is down to one leave which is dying. However, I saw yesterday that three new leaves have popped through the soil. I have three other calatheas including a Beauty Star. That one is so easy to take care of. I’ve got them grouped together over my kitchen sink and they seem to like it. Thanks for posting again. I really like your channel. Stay well!

      Thank you, Helen! Oh, these calathea can be so finicky. I've never had a Beauty Star, and this is inspiring me to get one! I bet they love being by the kitchen sink. Lots of humidity there to soak up. I'm also really glad to be making videos again, and hopeful that I can get my calathea all healthy again. 😊

    I am very pleased to see another video from you. You may not be an expert, but you sure know a lot more than most.
    I tried your neem-oil-in-the-soil-systemic-approach on my Calathea and Alocasia. My plants survived but so did the spider mites. Cold-pressed Neem oil works much better on the leaves. Parafin oil (1% solution) is very efficient on the leaves if they can handle it. I doubt Calathea can but my Alocasia survived the treatment. The spider mites all perished.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety

      Thanks, Allan! I do love these calathea. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the soil drench. Some of my calathea were more successful than others with it (none were harmed by it, in the end, but some had reduced spider mites), and I did switch the neem oil I'm using to an organic cold press. I should probably update about that. I'm glad you got the spider mites out! I'll have to look into parafin oil a bit more.

    What a timely video! I recently ordered calathea from an etsy shop in Indonesia. The seller cut off the leaves from many of the calathea and i was so confused as to why, but seeing what happened to yours after shipping this now makes more sense! I haven't found a lot of CZcams folx covering imports for calathea so thank you!

    hii! just a quick question, i watered my new calathea for the first time in the nursery pot and only half the leaves are curling, babies leaves dying off and browning. the potting mix it came with seems compacted than it needs to be after all the research ive done. im assuming she's going into shock and im waiting on the soil to dry up before i repot it...during your five months, do you just leave the plants alone with regular watering and humidity ? i dont want to bother the plant too too much while it recovers

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes--I watered regularly when the soil dried and otherwise left them alone (area they were in has a pretty consistent humidity of 50-60 percent, which worked). Good luck with your calathea! 😊
