    THANK YOU for this video series!!! It is so hard to find information on how to deal with calathea problems - which I'm certain most houseplant calathea parents deal with at some point! I'm pretty sure I've watched most calathea content on youtube (pandemic) and the majority of it tends to be basic care - not trouble shooting (and then I later find out many content providers just purchased their luscious 3 foot calathea from a nursery to do a video on it leaving viewers with the impression that THEY had successfully grown it to that size using the "I use tap water just fine, and humidity not really needed..." type advice. LOL Your REAL WORLD series letting other "calathea assistants" learn through the ups and downs of plant care is SOOO helpful - not everything is a success, but we can still learn something for the next time!

      I have done so many terrible, and a few good things, to my calathea. I am so glad the videos are helpful. It isn't always easy or fun to share the reality of what happens with my calathea but when I started the channel, I had a hard time finding answers to some of the issues I encountered. Reddit was actually more helpful than CZcams but I wanted to see actual video calathea problems and what the plants looked like, after time, when someone tried to solve a problem. That said--this repot has gone not so good, and I'll be updating with some footage about what happened and what I need to do. Hopefully, my mistakes can help others. 😊

    I have an illustrus that had this type of thing happen. I approached it by barely adding any soil to the new pot before putting the roots at the bottom of the new pot (that's just the height they sat at naturally when I held the leaves at the desired height, because I had the same ball of roots at the bottom). Anyway then I filled in the soil around the plant as usual with a tiny bit of compacting and staking but not too much. I let it settle there for a few months and watered carefully so it could re-grow a more compact, full root system to support it's weight. Once the root system recovered, then I re-potted it again into a bigger pot and put it a wee bit deeper in the soil and now it's pushing new growth and doing well.

      I'm glad it worked out for you; I'll definitely keep this in mind going forward. This zebrina just about died completely back after I did this. So far, it is growing strong enough stems to hold up the leaves but we'll see what happens! I honestly need to get it back closer to the window soon as I think this probably had something to do with it putting out large leaves that had gotten a lot of sun onto a plant base that had experienced lower light conditions. Thanks again!

    Good luck with the beautiful Zebrina! I've got an aglaonema that I've had to perform a similar intervention with twice. Each time it came back from what looked like the brink of death. Right now, I'm seeing die off again and I'm at the point of just letting it because it's been a struggle keeping it healthy.

      It looks terrible now. Just terrible. I am probably going to have to do something about it soon. But I am now encouraged that it can come back. Thank you, Cheryl. 😊

    Thank you 💗 my zebrina is actually one of my easier and more adaptable ones, but right now I'm going through a cutting back process with my warzwecii 😭 it was so stunning and huge and every bit of it has died back and crisped away except for two new shoots

      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety

      Oh, I know how you feel. My warscewiczii just started putting out mature leaves again after my shenanigans with it. This poor zebrina must honestly hate my guts. It isn't going well. Fingers crossed!

    Wow Addy that was a hard watch! I’d have liked to see each section staked individually n tied at base AND higher up with soft twine/jute that hard firming wouldn’t have been necessary then.you still could do that n allieviate the compaction with another chopstick X G

      Let me tell you--it looks just terrible right now. I am likely going to have intervene, put it back in its old pot and do the staking. I'll see how high up I can go. Fingers crossed!

      P.S(again!)Remedy must b diluted but that’s normal with Calatheas isn’t it?! If you’re not familiar with it you get it in health food stores (renamed 5 Flower Remedy in England) Xg

    From experience, I believe you should’ve reported into a smaller pot. I think the root system you’ve got going on is too small for the pot size. You could’ve kept her in the same pot, just topped her up and cleaned her up. I think she’ll massively die back on you. Sometimes, I’ve learned that downsizing your calathea from your growers pot will give her better odds of coming back. That third rhizome is probably still alive. Idk if you’ve got calathea on terracotta pots down, but for me they dry out too unevenly for the plants comfort. I would’ve down sized and gone for pot where the plant can be closer to what little roots she had, not too tall. Tbh I don’t think she was necessarily unhealthy, I think she was adjusting to survive in the pot she was in-her foliage likes healthy enough and the roots seemed as if she’d been slightly over watered but then they came back. So I think you could be more optimistic, just make sure to leave it alone, put her in a place with VERY high humidity and always water on time. She might make it.

      I shouldn't have touch it at all, in hindsight. It is doing terribly and I am pretty sure that I not only compacted the soil in some parts but also left some problematic pockets in others. I think all four rhizomes that originally came with the plant may actually still be alive. It looks terrible right now. I am probably going to have to put it back in its original pot because I really messed this up. Ugh.
