Calathea I've Lost | End of Summer Spider Mite Attack

  • A spider mite infestation wiped out a number of calatheas in my plant room. Hang out with me while I go over which I've lost, which I'm interested in getting again, and the one calathea that I definitely won't buy again (but will probably end up a hypocrite and eventually get again).

    This is so heartbreaking! Especially after the time and care you put into your plants. Thank heavens most of your collection was spared!

    I wish you included footage/pictures of your plants’ spider mite damage. Spider mites suck!

      They were so bad when I finally got back that I kind of just rushed them out of the house as quickly as possible. I do have some videos on my channel of spider mite damage if you are interested, though!

    Cyclamen mites live on the top sides of leaves. Spider mites on the bottom.

    Next time! Shower them immediately. Calatheas loves shower and spider mites not! Spider mites are one of the easiest to get rid of people, so you all know! Shower shower and showers, period... This is what hurts me the most, the thought of letting someone else be in charge over my plants... Even my husband has deaths on his hands at home😅

    I lost a couple of calathea plants last winter due to low humidity. Love to see more videos from you, especially the new calathea varieties. Cheers from Australia and happy 2021!!

    Hi Addy! I'm so sorry over the devastating loss of so many of your plants! Sometimes I feel like the spider mites are winning the war we have against them lol. smh. if you have time I would love to see a video on the different types of damage in calatheas and how the plant or leaves respond. spider mite damage vs over/under watering damage vs humidity damage etc. sometimes it's just so hard to tell! thank you as always! And I haven't forgotten about sending you my pics of my plant I needed help with on Instagram. life keeps us busy doesn't it lol but will send them soon. thank you!

      I look forward to seeing the photos, Ashlee. I do have a video on my channel that might be helpful where I go over different leaf issues here: czcams.com/video/hX3cyy-zUl0/video.html. I also have some spider mite damage footage in other videos, too, if that's helpful! 😊

    I read in the comments section of another CZcams video that Floramite SC works wonders. I think it’s supposed to kill at every life cycle including eggs. Very very expensive, but better than risking your collection. I’ve recently treated a very heavily infested white star with Supersoap and after a few weeks only a few spider mites have come back so maybe that’s a good budget friendly alternative. No damage to leaves with either one. I stay away from oils personally since they have the most potential for leaf damage.

      Oh, I will definitely look into this! Thanks for the tip 😊 I really like using neem oil but I really have to use it consistently and I didn't have enough prepared for use while I was gone.

  • @bobthathead3
    @bobthathead3 Před 3 lety +2

    Ahhhh this is so depressing. I had spider mites but luckily I caught it right before it had done much damage. I have a spray I use from when my fiancé worked at a pest control company and it works right away. It’s called cykick CS, you can find it on Amazon. Just takes a light spraying but on all the surfaces, don’t soak it. It’s not natural like neem oil, it certainly is a chemical, but it’s never hurt any of my plants. It kills them on contact and then it’s a residual that lasts at least 30 days but I’ve never had to treat a plant twice.

    Ohhhh no!!!
    I'm so sorry for you 😕
    I hope you can replace them with minimal pain!
    I hear you about spidermites, I'm struggling with them on my Alocasia Stingray for a few months now. Thankfully I caught it early and the plant seems to tolerate the neem oil leaf wash / soil drench OK but I can't seem to get fully on top of them 😕🤔

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +2

      Oh, they are just so annoying! I hope you can get them off your Alocasia. It's so hard to control the outbreaks when I'm not here. 😔

  • @LittleLeafSF
    @LittleLeafSF Před 3 lety +1

    Sorry you had to deal with them especially since you were gone and couldn’t troubleshoot. Hope you can rebuild them and good thing you have extras.
    Treating the fuzzy rufibarba sounds like such a hassle!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! It was harder to troubleshoot from photos than I thought it would be. I do think they were underwatered so the leaf posture made catching some things really difficult. The rufibarba really was a hassle--it's so beautiful but those little hairs are hard to sift through.

    Hey I just commented on your spider mite 5 month update video about what may be contributing to the spider mite infestation - neem oil extract is not the same as neem oil and may not have azadiracthin in it which may be why its not working. I'm just commenting here since this is your newest video so hopefully you see the other comment and can have better luck with future plants!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh, you remind me--I showed the wrong neem oil bottle in one of my soil drench videos! Yes, I do use both! However, my soil drench is with azadiracthin.

    The seller for your last 3 plants moved. But yeah hopefully they would still have a way to get those rare plants. Looked everywhere online and couldn't find them. Watching your spider mite woos makes me so paranoid for those critters.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +1

      They make me paranoid, too! I really should have known something like this would happen around this time of year as it coincides with some of the big ag outbreaks. I do wonder if the seller will still be able to get them ...I know someone reached out and was able to get an Eucuadoriana ordered but that was a few months back now. I'll keep my eyes out and share on the channel if I come across any promising leads!

    Hi Addy, I also wish you had included the photos of the ones lost to spider mites. I'm sure you are aware that this species has been re-classified as Geoppertia after the man who "discovered" the plant in 1831. Just saying, as this is what your site is mainly about, so you should keep your viewers up to date.

    I just saved my calathea from spider mites and one of the tell tale signs of the leaf movement diminishing happened to my plant. My plant has been recovering for a month now, but the leaves don't move at night anymore. Did your calathea leaf movements returned after recovery?

  • @MpMochaPeanut
    @MpMochaPeanut Před 3 lety +1

    urghhh spidermites.. i hate them very much too. But again I think you would want to find some other pesticides other than neem oil if couldnt get rid of them, and prevention is always better than curing so I suppose all your plants need to be sprayed on regular basis to prevent them infected from spidermites. I did mine like twice a week.

      They are just so difficult. They've responded best to the soil drench so far but I honestly had such a short supply of it made up that there was hardly anything to use while I was gone. I'll definitely make sure I keep it mixed up in the future!

    What state do you live in? You mention having trouble managing your moisture so I was curious...Do you put your plants outside? Is that how they got spider mites or did they arrive with them?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +2

      I did a neem oil soil drench and sprayed the plants down to get the mites off and then applied a topical neem oil.

    I'm sorry for your loss :(
    This video comes at the perfect time, just when I'm about to bury my first calathea 😭 It was a beautiful misto, so lush and green and I'm still not sure what exactly killed it... It wasn't spider mites, that i know.
    Gonna replace it with another calathea, a lancifolia or makoyana probably. The misto is so hard to take care of 😂

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh, I think my Misto hated me a little bit! It did get much better during the growing season but it struggled so much at first that I don't think I'll replace it. Maybe I will look into a Lancifolia, too!
