    Addy! You left out one important detail regarding neem oil on calathea leaves and this has happened to mine. DO not place near a window or spray neem oil on your calathea leaves outside bc the sun light will burn the leaves due to the oil on the leaves! Just be careful and keep away from windows after spraying the leaves.

      Oh, this is a good tip! I did burn one of my plants a little bit, too, getting it too close to the window after a spray. Definitely important!

As a Ph.D student (in Economics, though) who is a plant enthusiast, I really liked how you have studied scientific papers to find the solution to your spider mites problem. I certainly would love to hear more about the studies you read and the things you find. Thanks a lot.

      I am glad the information was helpful! Some of the articles I read about my region were even calling for a slow down of crop treatments as early spraying on crops in the spring was potentially increasing spider mites/making them more resistant to treatment in the summer. It got a lot more complex than I thought pretty quickly! 😊

    I'm going to do this today to my anthurium superbum that got spider mites last winter. I have regular neem oil (not the garden neem) so I'm still researching how much to use - or if there's even a difference between the two. It's a big plant w/ a large complex root system so I don't think the neem drench will negatively affect it. I also regularly use neem mixed w/ water and castile soap to clean the leaves on all my plants and it's been fine so far. Can't wait to try this. And I love the way it smells!!

    FINALLY! Someone mentioned the mites being outside in trees ! That’s my problem! They’re in the shade trees right against my house . I just spent a bunch of money on tree injection capsules cuz the trees are too high to spray . The capsules aren’t up taking correctly unfortunately. I may try the drench method on my indoor succulents. I’ve got over 200 indoor succulents and they’ve gotten the mites . It sucks . Cuz we don’t have time to spray often . I’m so happy to hear this worked for you . I have some Azamax . That’s got more azadiractin than plain Neem oil . I’ll try the drench on a couple that I don’t care about. Then if it kills them , I won’t be so upset. Thanks for this video. Although we have different plants , I know your pain . 🤗

Hay que conservarlo en frío, pero es muy muy eficaz e inocuo además de ecológico.

    I just got a calathea and the leaves don't close at night. It's not spider mites, but now I know definitely something is wrong. I'm spraying with neem anyway, maybe it's some other pest. Thank you!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +3

      I wouldn't worry too much--a little neem oil won't hurt. If movement is a problem with only one leaf--that's when I usually know something is wrong. If you can imagine, and I should have gotten video of this, all of the leaves on a plant raised toward to the ceiling while one single leaf points down at the ground at a steep angle. This is the movement that usually worries me. I do have some calathea who "pray" a little less dramatically (their leaves raise a bit but never fully toward the ceiling). I hope that makes sense and best wishes for you and your calathea! 😊

    Great video Addy... wil definately try the soil drench however l found all my calathea leaves burnt or became transparent using neem oil on them... but it could be that l mixed the neem oil with some dish detergent...not sure... and my calathea sits 5 metres away from a north facing window but it still burnt the leaves
    Also the info on the leaf movement becoming hindered due to mites... totally agree with that.
    I found that spraying 70% isopropyl alcohol was the best and least damaging treatment. .
    Your calatheas are gorgeous.

    Hey Addy. Great video. Lots of information here backed up with your own research. Citing sources would be awesome in the future. Not required as I think you did a great job, but could help others in going deeper using your info as a starting point.
    I have a small home garden of mostly edible plants and spider mites are the pests which will destroy any of my plants once they get properly established. Topical foliar neem applications don't seem to do much, so I'm looking for other solutions.
    The only reason I'm avoiding neem soil drench is because I've heard that it will create a bloom of soil bacteria, but then the bacteria will run out of food and kill itself out, leading to a collapse of the population (info I heard from Scott Skamnes).

    • @JordanLOL
      @JordanLOL Před 3 lety

      Also backed up with research "The effects of neem extract and azadirachtin on soil microorganisms"
      While this is an interesting thought experiment, the amount of soil we use in small containers isn't enough to maintain proper soil biology regardless, so it's kind of a pointless exercise to worry about this stuff.
      I think I'll give my affected plants a soil drench and see how it does. Again thanks for the amazing video and research you've done.
      If you want to nerd out on a bunch of science related growing stuff, google "Future Cannabis Project" on youtube and they have some great people on there. Some of the videos are silly stonners, but watch one with Scott Skamnes to start.

    I have used neem as a foliar spray to control a range of pests. Was intrigued at the prospect of using it as a soil drench since i have a vining plant that is over 20 feet tall- not feasible to spray indoors! Wish that you independently tested used the soil drench on its own to determine whether the reduction was largely due to the drench or the combination foliar spray/drench you used.

      I am glad your philos are well. Too bad about the calathea though! Yes, I did half the concentration due to being worried about the sensitivity level in calatheas. Hope yours bounce back quickly! Mine are doing much better and I think I am going to stop the monthly soil treatment as the summer ends. While I've been able to find more information about the soil drench in other plants over time, I still haven't been able to find anything about long term use in calathea so I'm thinking of using it only during the seasons when I know spider mite populations are at their peak (for me this is the times of the year). 😊

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety

      This calathea that I show with the infestation was a plant that just couldn't seem to fight off the mites. However--the brown edging could definitely be over fertilization. I received the plant when it was pretty small, as you can see in the video, and the burned edges started to show up pretty soon after it arrived so I think it could have gotten a double dose of fertilizer on its way to me. However, the spider mites certainly didn't help and could have exacerbated it for sure!

    Love the article inclusions! Just an fyi I don't think the neem oil extract you are using has azadiracthin in it. I'm just now discovering this after using the Southern Ag neem oil for 6+ months and am really disappointed. I checked the Garden Safe product you're using and it seems they both are neem oil extract which essentially means its the leftovers after the azadiracthin has been removed. I'm new to this too so maybe someone can clarify more but from my research I think only "100% neem oil" (not an extract) has that active ingredient. I thought my neem oil extract sprays/drenches (like you're doing) were helping but I've had spider mites pop up a few times now so maybe we'll both have more success with a more potent azadiracthin product. I would love to know your thoughts or anyone else's that has knowledge about this!

I didn't have an outbreak while doing this the first time but I wasn't able to continue for a few months and an outbreak happened. However, it wasn't enough time to honestly see if the lack of outbreak was related to weather/local outbreak conditions. Right now, a lot of crops near me are starting to prep for spraying as the summer growing season starts so I plan to start again by early June. I'll try to track it better this time and update how it impacted the outbreaks. Thanks for asking!
