25 Calathea Species and Cultivars Ranked by Difficulty Level (for me)

- This video has been requested a couple of times. Unfortunately, bringing my calatheas together has previously been too much of a challenge to due to spider mite issues. My neem oil soil drench has been working great and I can finally move my calatheas around together. And--this is a great time to rank calatheas in my house by difficulty. Since January, there have been problems in my house that has made calathea care difficult. From air circulation issues in my plant room, to fungal and bacterial issues, spider mite attacks, and a temporary shut down of humidifier use put my calatheas resiliency to the test. Here--I show you which proved to be the most resilient, why buying plantlets and juvenile calatheas can be a challenge, and how starting with healthy mature plants makes care a lot easier. Be sure to leave your own experiences which calatheas are easiest and most difficult for you, and any care tips you've got in the comments.

Thanks for this!!
Thank you for showing beautiful flowerds
I bought a Fucata on accident when searching for an Orbifolia. I keep her a ft away from a North window next to my humidifier surrounded by ferns and she is giving me so much love. While all my other calatheas are hating me. She's my most beautiful one. I bought a tiny burle marx baby with two leaves and it had been struggling. I finally gave up on it and put the root node with no leaves left into a mossy terrarium and now it has three leaves.
So I finally know what type of calathea I have! Picturata argentea! I bought it because I thought the leaves were pretty and I had no idea how fickle calathea are! After a few months of frustrating research and almost killing him a few times he is now happy in my bathroom with bright indirect light, a pebble tray of filtered water, weekly soil moisture checks, watering with filtered water and very diluted fertilizer, and increased humidity in that room. Yeah. Somehow each new leaf is so much more rewarding when you have to work that hard for it!
How do you know it's Picturata Argentea and not Halo? They look the same to me, at least from the video
Or it could be a royal standard or a corona. They are all similar.
I fell in love with this calathea when I first saw it and didnt know it's a Zebrina! I gave solely all my love, care and humidity yet it was still droopy and dying so I gave up and placed it outside together with my other plants. The next morning I was shocked it grew healthy again and even water it w/ tap water together with my other plants! My zebrina drove me crazy yet i still adore it so much ❤️
This video was very helpful for me. I am a fairly new Calathea Mom. I love them. Thank you for all the info.
Thank you for this video! It’s fun to see so many different types. It’s also reassuring to hear that even experienced owners can have issues with these divas! I have 5 calatheas and they’re mostly happy but I definitely don’t have the humidity high enough for them.
Wow, they’re absolutely stunningly beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
I’m a Calathea lover too, I relate tho this video so hard!!! It’s a great video, you are so knowledgeable and I love learning from you!
Thank you so much, bronwyn! 😊 They do bring so much joy into my house.
The first plant that i have bought was calathea maui, i just love her ♡ i didnt know anything about plants but she is still very healthy and still growing ♡
Wow! What a great vid. You are sooo knowledgeable…and humble. Really enjoyed this!
Thank you for sharing your tips and experiences ...we plant parents always need to be more generous with our patience and humility 😊
So true--this is such a good reflection! 😊
Yaiks! Just saw this after I just bought my first Calatheas... Zebrina, White Tiger and Ornata... 😳😳😳
just repotted one of my Zebrina yesterday when I saw your video yesterday about the yellow edges.
Binge watching your videos and thanks for all the infos about them. ♥️
I love these plants! Great video!! I have 5 calathea plants. ... I found that they hate to dry out. ... so I bought those self watering bulbs. ... on my larger medallion I have a glass bulb and on the smaller one some smaller bulbs that are platic i found on amazon. You xare right about humidity! One more thing.... my first one i forgot to water it died....but I read somewhere it will grow back from its rhizomes and it has grown 2 new stems. ...thanks for the video
Love this! Became a calathea fan a few months now and can't stop! Looking for the difficult to find ecuadorian calathea! next! Cannot find! Ty for great video!
Thank you for making this video I really needed this information and loved it
beautiful calatheas...thanks for your informative video
I'm suprised that you don't have an Orbifolia, your plants are absolutely beautifullll! Ive had a small Orbifolia and quite a few different calatheas for just over a year and they're definitely one of my favorites for sure!
I am really afraid of Orbifolias! For some reason, I am convinced I won't be able to keep it alive. But I am glad yours is doing well. 😊 They really are beautiful!
@@AddyBeez I killed an orbifolia 😢
Any tips on how to care for an orbifolia? I just purchased one and a lot of videos say they are up and down
@@AddyBeez I’ve found the single best way to keep one alive is to keep it close to a humidifier, and out of the sun. In nature they thrive underneath tree canopies, and receive VERY little sunlight, mine has been so happy!
Oh my Addy!!! That’s me, well one of many I guess who recently asked this and you did it! Wow thanks for showing this to us. Must be hard to rank and judge them and have something specific to say. Goes to show you pay attention really well to each and single one of these beauties! Thank you!!!!!!! Supporting from Japan
Yes! And thank you so much for the recommendation--I'm glad that conditions permitted me to get them all together for the video. 😊 Each one seems to have a lesson to teach me, that's for sure! Thanks for the support, so appreciated!
What kind of soil use in repotting Calathea plants?
I struggle with all calatheas in the dry climate I live in. I'm glad you did a video on calatheas. Thanks for the great info!
Well thought out video!! This was a excellent depiction of Calathea’s! I’m trying to nurse my Fasciata back to life. It appears to have white spots on several leaves.
So gorgeous 😍 im new to these plants. But have always love unique looking plants and flowers. I feel fulfilled and happy when I see them thrive.
I agree! Their foliage is so gorgeous and they truly do brighten my home up.
Wow beautiful calathea.they really love rains
Your Makoyana is absolutely gorgeous😍I hope mine ends up looking like that🌿✨
Absolutely beautiful.. 😍
Calathea are my absolute favorite.. Nothing can beat them when it comes to beauty and foliage.. Though they are little finicky and they don't love me that much.. 🙃😁 But I'm learning gradually how to keep them happy..
Thanks for sharing.. It helps..
Hi u have some really nice choices of plants keep it up thanks for sharing tips on how to care for them
What a collection! 👌👌👌
I love Calatheas too!! Recently got the rattle snake ones and I think they are likely to be group A. However I live in a tropical country - Singapore so I guess that contributes to the easier maintenance here for most of the calatheas.
Wow! Your collection is gorgeous!! I'll definitely keep this video as a reference. I can't keep up w/ their humidity requirements, especially in the winter when my prayer plant really took a beating. My little Dottie is doing fine right now out of it's terrarium, but come fal,l it's going back in there. It makes you wonder how they manage to survive in the wild - unless their natural habitat is a swamp, lol!
Such a good point! Once I learned that some of them live in actual cloud forests (montane environments)-- well. Not exactly easy to replicate in my area. I'm so glad that your Dottie is doing well. 😊 Oh! My Aglaonema is putting out a new leaf, or trying to, but I do think I got the watering wrong because its lowest leaf is definitely going to turn yellow. Do you think a terracotta pot might be better for it or would that dry it out too fast? The yellowing could be from acclimation/shipping stress but I'm not sure.
@@AddyBeez After one died from root rot, I propagated a stem in water and recently transitioned it to soil. It's doing great, so I'm definitely moving it to terracotta as soon as those roots are firmly established in the nursery pot. I'm hoping it will lower the chance of it getting rot again. That plant was never healthy and it hung on for a year before it's rapid decline, so at least they are hearty!
Oh, happy Sunday! ☕️ 💚
Happy Sunday, Whitney! 😊
Hola desde Panamá🇵🇦.. No entiendo tu idioma ..pero si pude entender el idioma universal de la belleza de las plantas.. Felicitaciones por tan hermosa colección de plantas.. Me encantó👍
They're so beautiful ♡♡ I hope what you got through what you were having before :) tale care.
Great video! I'd love to see an update. I bought an orbifolia as my first calathea, and one of my first tropical, not knowing how much or a diva they were. It's alive but with crispy leaves when there was humidity stress and when I used tap water.
So beautiful calatheas🎉🎉wow
I'm new and really enjoyed your format, explanations, and labeling. Beautiful plants, appreciate the names but hard to read on light pink background for a such a short glimpse.
Oh my god awesome! I have 17 different Marantas. Your video is greaaattttt
17 different marantas! That sounds amazing. 😊
Great vid, you're my go - to channel for calathea care! After a year long battle with recurrent spidermites on my Whitestar, I just gave up and she is now buried in my compost tip! I only have one calathea left and that's a Fusion White. Got it as a 5 leaf plantlet about a year ago and it's thriving! Still a small plant but about three times the size it was. 👍
I'd love a warsceweckii but they are very hard to find for me.
Oh, I understand. Spider mites can just decimate a plant so quickly. I'm glad that your Fusion White is doing well! 😊 Impressive growth!! Mine just seems to replace its leaves without growing bigger though maybe this year. Maybe. I feel like some calatheas are just impossible to get where I am--or, it will at least take a couple of years for them to get on market. The Warscewiczii is honestly so lovely and I have treated it so poorly. Had I done a better job from the beginning, it would look quite different now.
@@AddyBeez you won't believe it but I found an absolute beauty of a warscewiczii at IKEA today! 6" pot with three huge plants in it, 45cm tall (I think that's about 18") for 10 euros!!! (12$US)
Happy dance time, I tell you! 😁
Not a blemish on it but, as usual, it's in quarantine on my dining room table. I've never brought pests home on an IKEA plant but better safe than sorry!
So happy 😊
They're so pretty. I love them calatheas
Me too! 😊
Beautiful collection.......your tips are very helpful .....thank you .
Thank you! :)
Your calathea sooo beautiful..🥰🥰
This was really thorough. When I moved my calatheas to shallower pots, there was marked improvement. Thanks for sharing your tips.
What do you mean, how shallow?
@@kimchiiiii0525 About 3-4 inches deep and 5-6 inches wide.
Surprisingly, my rufibarba is one of my most problematic. I was having problems with my warcewitzi over the winter but I just cut it down to the soil level, placed it in a self watering Lechuza pot and substrate and it has grown quite a few new great leaves. The beautiful louisae now has 3 leaves. I chopped off all the leaves except one and totally just watered it and waited for it to die. Apparently, she wants to live! You have a great collection! My easiest Calathea is the C. lancifolia. It has not given me any humidity issues and is quite beautiful!
Oh--this is good to know! 😊 I need to figure something out--I am pretty sure the roots are damaged on mine. It put out a new rhizome--or I should say that it put out new growth on a rhizome that seemed to recover but the leaves all show root damage. A few people having been mentioning how well calathea do in Leca and I am trying to work up the nerve to try it/research enough to know how to get started. I am going to have to look more into Lechuza pots, too, thanks for the tip. Some of the species that get water stressed easily may do better in one!
I always enjoy seeing what calatheas that other people have....thank you for sharing your collection. The only problem that I have had is with my white fusion....I had it about 8 ft.away from the window, it looked all droopy. I took the risk and moved it to about 3ft. from the window and it seems to love it. I thought that the white leaves would burn, so far so good. If you want those 3 calatheas to drop their law suit....you might want to consider getting a table size water fountain and only use distilled water in it. My fountain was only 27.00 from Amazon.
My calatheas really love light, too. Oh--the fountain is an interesting idea! I am going to have check that out.
Im so jealous you were able to snatch a GORGEOUS makoyana at lowes. I got mine at a nursery and it's a little baby right now but I'm excited for it to get thiccc 😋
Hi new to your plant video really enjoy looking at your plant I appreciate you giving advice on how to take care of them I had one of them recently it's looks like the peacock feathers it started to dry up from the leaves and eventually die but I have to get another one so happy planting
Merci de m'avoir appris à connaître quelques unes de mes plantes par leur nom spécifique .
Completely the opposite way round from me! With houseplants, I think, the most important factor is the nature of 'house'. See - you seem to be in a 'new build' so you don't have the damp and dingy thing that I have with my three hundred year old stone cottage. People can talk about window direction, window distance, latitude and precise humidity needs but it comes down to some plants like old houses and some plants like new houses. Just about every video I see, online, about houseplants is from somebody who is raising them in a recently built house. All of that advice, I now realise, I have to put through my own algorithm. Apart from using room temperature collected rain water - that's pretty much a good thing across the board.
My Calatheas all seem to hate being top watered, too, so I've got all mine in self watering pots with chutes down to the reservoir and water level indicators. I try to keep the indicator levels at about half full.
I like the purple ones!!!
Beautiful plants
Your Calatheas are so beautiful!
I wish I could take credit! They are my favorite! 😊
Addy Beez Yes you can take credit.
Beautiful calatheas! So nice to see their leaves so shiny!
For me the orbifolia is easiest she never complains but the medallion is such a diva 😂 Loved the video!
Same!! Mine keeps loosing its colors it’s almost completely green now not sure what to do to fix that!!!
Maybe i should try the orbifolia. I’ve literally killed 3-4 medallions. I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. The peacock is in the same room & is literally thriving so much!😩
You have some gorgeous plants!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful collection! The only calathea I have is a medallion and prior to moving to my current home it was doing fine (popped a lot of new pretty leaves in janurary!). But now that I have a new space it having trouble adjusting and I am so sad. The humidity is in the 40% and being I only have one calathea I wasn’t keen on bringing out my humidifier again but I think I might have to. Calathea are so beautiful but you do have to commit more to it then other plants
Thank you and agreed! 😊 Honestly, I've wondered if I like calathea so much because I know they'll take up the time that I would have spent killing my other plants with over watering.
Very good video
I'm so impressed by your Calathea collection! Absolutely beautiful. I will live vicariously through you, as I have such bad luck with these guys. 😆
OMG I saw your Sansevieria collection! So impressive!!! I have two and lets just say that 50% of my Sansevierias don't like me. We can live vicariously through each other! 😂
WONDERFUL
Bonjour,
Tes Calatheas sont vraiment très très magnifiques 🥰❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Your plants look amazing!! I love this video thank you!! You have so many varieties that I don’t have
Thank you! 😊 It feels like I learn about a new variety every week!
Please please do an update video! Did your collection increase too maybe? Super helpful
Love ur plants.
Thank you! 😊
Wow ive never seen some of these gorgeous plants.. I think i have to wait till i get a humidifier. Where i live its anywhere from 6% to 20% humidity.. But these are all beautiful
I am really taken by their foliage. They remind me of one of my favorite outdoor plants that doesn't do well in my area (hostas), so it is a pleasure getting to have them indoors. 😊
you grow!!
So beautiful
Makoyana is the easiest Calathea in my opinion! Always happy, easy going.
Mine some are healthy and few drive me crazy.. I love them very much and can’t see them suffering
I think I am pretty lucky to live in a tropical country (Indonesia).. As long as calathea are placed in bright indirect light & close to other plants, they are pretty happy. We have no problem with humidity and I noticed calathea just love humid place & the soil must also humid too.. I have black dottie, pink cynthia & fasciata.. I'd love to have more but the prices are so expensive here 😂
Dang your Makoyana looks glorious!
They are very pretty
I’m glad I have well water in my house so I don’t have to worry about the water damaging the plants
I've had a few of those some easier some advanced (medallion, picturata crimson, dottie and zebrina) but all of them died.
My musaica is around 6 years old. And even though we had our ups and downs it outlived all of them and it's doing pretty good.
Currently it is sprouting 7 new leaves and I'm soo proud of it! (It's one of the first plants that I ever purchased)
Coxsagolun sevirem sizin kanali
Thank you!
Can you please do a new video on what different calathea leaf conditions are telling you. For example, new leaf growth coming in smaller and lower down to the base of the plant, lower leaves yellowing, curling and dying off, (I'm noticing this after watering, not sure if it's a coincedence) when it's normal old leaf loss and when it's a watering issue. New leaves coming in with see through edges which eventually crisp. Not producing new leaves at all or rarely. As you can tell i am having several issues with all my calathea! There's not a great deal of info out there on these issues so i thought you might be able to help! Thank you
Sounds like your calathea is getting overwatered
She did a video about calathea leaf conditions and what each can mean. It was super detailed and informative.
Sounds like over water or your not using distilled water
For anyone who doesn't know. Essential oils are photo-toxic. So when a plant is introduced to sunlight while it has Essential oils such as neem oil. It causes chemical burns. This is true for people as well. Thats why it's so important to dilute it.
oh gosh I have two calatheas only and they really stress me out 😄😄😄 I actually just realized that their both advanced ones...😅
I used to think i know pretty much all calatheas.... Until CZcams recommended me your video !! 😅
Misto has been the easiest calathea for me till now, don't know how though ! And that louisae is just amazing 😍.... Would love to know where and how one can get it ?
Thank you for your helpful classification system- I think I own four in Group B. What humidity levels were you aiming for with your calathea collection? And also what has been your experience of caring for them over winter- did you have grow lights to supplement the shorter daylight. Thanks!
Fully agree with fucata. It’s suchhh a diva
I killed C. White Fussion once but now I have been growing one and she is doing good.
Your calathea collection is amazing and beautiful. I give up on calatheas after killing a dottie and struggling keeping the others I own alive. I will not buy another. I love them but they don't love me.
I understand--there are plants that I like but can't keep in my house for one reason or another. There are calathea I can't keep, too. Pretty sure I will not be getting any more Fucatas--I imagine it is pretty mad at me about now.
For me here in Seattle, makoyana is hands-down the most bulletproof, as is setosa. The big round leaved ones like ‘Medallion’ and illustris seem much more prone to browning edges. They all hate getting too cold but makoyana responded only by downward-pointing leaves, and came right out of it when the weather warmed. Mine now lives 8 feet away from a south-facing window, and is a complete beast.
Curling leaves do seem to happen with root damage, either from drying or overwatering.
The ones that break the most hearts (here) seem to be any of the velvety leaved ones, and also the pink-lined ones (ornata, ornata sanderiana). And of course $%€¥ ‘Fusion White’. 🤣
No mention of orbifolia, but people here seem to have good success with it as long as they are good on the watering. I recommend they treat them like some of the more finicky ferns in that respect - consistent, “little at a time” watering to maintain a constantly moist but not wet soil. Not so into bottom watering as it tends to lead to a wet bottom layer before the upper layers can get moistened.
I am now at a point where before buying new calatheas, I wonder which category they belong :P Added new to my collection and while I was at the plant store, I kept rewatching this :)
You know--I should update this in a year to see if I still feel the same. It's so hard to know if I'm being objective or not! And congrats on your new calathea! 😊
Excellent video! Calatheas have become my favourite, and all the information you provided will be super helpful.
Would you say the water in a humidifier needs to be distilled too?
Humidifiers, where I am, come with a warning to use distilled or other types of filtered (for example: demineralized) water because the process of releasing the vapor into the air can also release minerals from water into the air, among other concerns. However, I am certainly not an expert! But I do follow the EPA's recommendation to use distilled water to be safe. You can find a bit about it here: www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2014-08/documents/humidifier_factsheet.pdf
Wow Abby, Your Calathea's are all so Beautiful, & your video was very helpful, so Thanks.. 💚❤🧡💙💜
I just brought my very first Calathea Orbifolia, as a baby plant & so far, so good. I dont have a humidifier, so l'm using my Oil diffuser, with No oil in it, for the time being. And so far it seems to be working. 🤞🙂
I only have two crispy tips, that where on the plant when l got it through mail order, 2 months ago...
So far my plant has doubled in size, its Spring down here in Australia at the moment. So l can not wait to see how big She'll get, by the time Summer is over... l've subscribe to your channel, so l will keep watching for more tips, & helpful advice.
Once again Thank-You... JO

I have a mosaica (group b). Bought it on a whim. It’s doing great. I don’t do a thing to it. I have found that if a plant likes it’s spot - it will do well. If it doesn’t like its home - you will have problems from day 1.
It doesn't like this home! It has four healthy new leaves but I am not certain they will stay that way.
Loved your video. Currently own rattlesnake, orbifolia, majestica white star, zebrina, and musaica. :)
Where do you buy your calathea's?
Please do a care video on the White Star. I just can’t figure out how to keep it happy. I give it distilled water and keep it at 60% humidity and the new leaves unfurl with brown tips or develop crisps shortly after. What am I doing wrong? 🥺
I have only one , a zebrina. Yes she is fussy but that is all they had had my local box store 🌿
Thanks for the video! My princess Jessie is going through the same thing with leaves browning and crisping. How did you treat yours?
Wow
What would you say the optimum humidity for the hardest to grow ones is? What about the minimum to keep them happy?
Somehow for me the hardest ones are makoya and lancifolia, and orbifolia and stromanthe triostar feel perfect! They are all baby sized though. Just bought a white star in a normal size, let’s see how it goes..
Elles sont aussi belles les unes que les autres. Félicitations.
Thank you :)
My calathea Dottie is a right a hole! I can’t believe it’s on your easy list 😂 it literally started turning into a Dorito until I put it in a terrarium which has like 100% humidity or close enough. If I leave the top open to get rid of some moisture it will start crisping up within the day. It didn’t crisp a little bit, like the leaf rapidly turned into a brown crispy Dorito. They seem to be doing well in the terrariums though (I separated the two leaves I had left into two separate terrariums just in case) now one has a baby too and the other one is starting to unfurl finally, whereas my makoyana has been amazing and I even use tap water and even without a humidifier it’s been perfect. Honestly regret purchasing the Dottie it’s been such a ball ache
It's hard to type when I am laughing this hard--I am sorry your Dottie is giving you a bad time! I feel this way about all of the plants in Group C but am too afraid to say it in front of them in case they all decide to crisp up right on the spot. I'm glad the terrarium is working. I tried to build one for a plantlet I took off the Zebrina, which was a big mistake (too young to split), and learned that I have no terrarium building skills. I need to just buy one.
Hi! Thank you so much for the video. I noticed you didn't include Calathea Insignis. Which group would you put that in, please?
i always enjoy watching your video and in between, i able to learn some tips from you. For me, white fusion is definitely a pain for me! Just when all the leaves wilted and I was about to dispose it, I found new growth! Hopefully it would thrive and able to adapt in my house. I have issues with Makoyana, too. Used to water with tap water then even got new one with filtered water still not able to help. Im getting 3rd one with distilled water and hopefully it would stay. My dottie on the other hand quite an easy one, I used to water one with tap water on daily basis until I realised it was a big no and changed to filtered water and finally distilled water and also reduced the frequency of watering to 2 times a week, it just doing fine!
You know--I wish I knew more about how growing conditions in nurseries affect a plant's needs/requirements later. And--I wish I knew a bit more about how my environment specifically impacts them, because I have noticed that across species, some can tolerate purified water while others will only tolerate distilled. They seem like such a small distinctions but can be really confusing! I am glad your Dottie is doing well! 😀
@@AddyBeez Yes true! hope we can speak their languages or they can speak human languages! haha!
Thanks for this video. I would agree with zebrina and white fusion being in the advance category. I wish I knew that before buying them. I am a new plant mom and to have those 2 as a new plant owner was quite challenging. I use distilled water, humidifier and they still didn’t do well. I think they ended up suffering water stress (overwatering). I didn’t even water it frequently, but I think when I watered it, I used too much water. They need the perfect amount of water. Not too much, not too little, just right. Like Goldie locks and the 3 bears 😅😂
That is a perfect description! 😊 The care is tricky, especially because it's hard to know what they were used to at the nursery. Some seem to be easy to care for and others--well. Not so much!
It is tricky getting that perfect balance of water (and I also find they ironically like a lot of aeration as well. I've switched all my calatheas to self-watering and it's made both me and them a lot happier.
Beautiful Calatheas. May I ask where are you getting all of the Calatheas from? I have never even heard of some of them. Great video, new subscriber here.
Thanks! 😊 I source a lot from sellers on Etsy.com--you can find some rare ones throughout the year. I also buy from local sellers when I can and also from sites like planterina.com.
You can buy from me if you want im from.philippinea u can contact me at my acct. noriel a. Fulgencio fb
My Zebrina has been such a trooper. It was one of my earliest plants. It got spider mites and I didn’t know what to do so I just put it outside in the dry Southern California heat that goes down to 20% humidity. I give it filtered but not distilled water. Does it have crispy tips? Yes, but not bad at all. 😃
I like to know please where you are ordering your Calathea? I went to Lowe and Home Depot I only found 2 kinds. You had beautiful Calatheas. Thx you for sharing your Videos.
People in my locality says I would regret buying calathea coz it's won't last till Christmas time, my calathea's are still doing good so far and I'm looking forward to it😀. I would like to know what soil mix or potting mix you use for your calatheas.
