I put mine outside in deep shade about 15 years ago and then kind of forgot about it. When I did remember, it had been sitting there for about a year and the roots had gone through the bottom of the pot so I ended up leaving it in that spot permanently. Now it has grown so tall that it has broken through the plant that was giving it shade and amazingly, it suffers our very hot and dry summer heat of over 40ºC and 15-20% RH almost every day. But somehow it has adapted and is thriving.

If mine got even slightly too dry, leaves would turn yellow and die. So for a few years, I’ve had it in a self-watering pot, and it LOVES it!

Oddly, this is one of the few plants I've been very successful with. I've had one in both a very humid, southern climate and now have 2 in a very dry, northern climate. They grow like crazy. It doesn't need a lot of water, just well-draining soil. It seems to grow well even in minimal light conditions, too. Love this plant; looks like I have a cool jungle tree!

I live in a garden level apartment, so sunlight from windows isn't really an option for me, but my little unbraided chonky-trunk baby money tree was still doing quite well for itself...until my cat figured out how to get to it.
She absolutely ravaged its leaves, and as a result it's looking like it just threw itself into a blender...but it's not dead.
I've been putting it outside in the late afternoon to give it a boost now that the weather is warmer, so I'm hoping it'll pull through.

I chronically ignore mine, and he’s grown three times bigger than when I got him. He might get watered once or twice a month 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️💚
He lives by my west facing glass sliding door, in California. In summer it gets some shade, but he seems to be happy. No yellow, scorched, or crunchy leaves. I probably need to repot it, had it a couple years now, finally learning about houseplants🙃
I do give him fertilizer, though, when I fertilize my orchids, I always give him a squirt from their bottle. So I guess I’ve accidentally taken great care of him 😅

You can absolutely put one of these in direct sun in a south facing window. (Or a north facing window if you’re in the southern hemisphere) You just need to acclimate it slowly. Best time to do so is in the late winter or early spring (like this time of year in the northern hemisphere) Start out several feet from the window and move it 6 to 8 inches closer every week. Once they get accustomed to the sun they grow MUCH faster and suck up water a lot quicker too. Letting them dry out completely between waterings occasionally helps encourage the trunks to thicken and store more water.
Lots of people grow these as landscaping trees here in South Florida. They do very well in direct sun.

They also love 75% cactus 25% regular soil mix where they live goes through dry periods to flooding periods so what you can do leave a plastic tray under the pot to hold to left over water that will simulate flooding and leave the water the plant will eventually drink it and leave it dry for about a week also or use your moisture meter and do what he said

Well that explains why both of mine are doing great from the start, as I am from the Netherlands 😂 It was one of my first plants and for me they are as easy as my sansevierias and zz plants. I actually one water when the soil is dry. I did place them in well draining soil and then only fully water them, let it drain and put it back in its decorative pot. The stems hold a lot of moisture so for me this works for watering and it prevents rootrot.

I love him and this video was cracking. I did it and made the two cuts on my jade and now we will see if all three will grow. Very exciting stuff. My last task for the day is my ficus microcarpa. It's too has a knobby root ball growing out of the earth with the leaves growing from the top. It had three out of place long leave stems growing so I cut them off and planted them in earth like a ficus cutting. Let's see if they will grow! It looks better anyways. Cheerio Rich. Love and Peace.

I just stick mine under a plant light and it's doing well. It does get some light from a window. I'm terrible about remembering to water so the soil dries out completely on a regular basis. Still looks fine. I let the soil sit in a dish of water so it can really saturate when I do water it. And I add a silicon supplement to the liquid fertilizer I use since I heard it makes the plant more resilient.

I have mine for almost two years now. When I brought it home I realized a few pieces broke off during the transport. So I just put them in a jar of water and kept them there for almost a year. They both grew nice roots and now are planted in a cactus soil and happy. I bottom water mine whenever the leaves look a tiny bit droopy. I love this plant so much that I bought another one. It was braided very tightly and the stems were suffocating. One died. So I loosened up the braid a bit and now the stems are happy.

Mine is loving its over winter spot in the bathroom window even though it is directly above the heater. It has consistently produced new growth and some of the shoots have six levels instead of five. That might be its permanent spot even when the rest of the plants go back outside for the season.

Just what I needed. Mine was just like yours and then I moved it closer to the window and... 😢. This is northern Spain, and it rains quite a lot so a bit warmer than Sheffield but still not too much. Now I moved it back and seems to be better but I suspect possible rot roots. Just bought my moisture meter although I might change the blocky soil I put back in the day when I had no idea what I was doing whatsoever. We'll see how it thrives or if it totally dies. In any case I have some propagation going on so hopefully I'll be able to keep it. It's a lovely plant. Thanks.

BUT it has a quite big pot (I didn´t know better when I repottet), I test as far as my chopstick can reach but not sure how dry the very bottom get´s. I probably water about every 2-4 weeks, depending on the temperature.

Bought my money tree at Lowes on their clearance table for $10. It was already about 2-3 feet tall but 4 branches were cut for whatever reason and the others seemed fine. I placed it in my kitchen about 2 feet from a window and it was not happy - dropped every last leaf in protest! I thought all hope was lost but decided to place it on my front steps outdoors and within one week it started sprouting all over! I am in upstate NY and it is now July so it seems to thrive with the humidity and 2-3 hours of morning sun. It rained last night so I worried the soil may now be too moist - I will keep checking with my moisture meter and keep my fingers crossed but shouldn't the money tree be able to tolerate outdoor rain as long as the pot has adequate draining holes ?

I’ve had a money tree for around 6 years. It’s never grown and is now down to only one trunk. Summer time I take it outside and it does well, but the indoors during the winter and over/under watering… I’d like to get another one and do better with it

We have skylights and mine is growing like wildfire! So it gets lots of sunshine, mostly indirect, and I swear I can hear it growing. It seems to require more water than all my other plants. I don’t want it to get any taller though so I’m trying to figure out how to prune it back!

i’ve got the most traumatic plant story from one of these. took it home, found it had fungus gnats. quarantined it out of my room, my cat started going ham on the leaves. moved it somewhere the cat couldn’t reach….. it falls on top of my ALREADY BROKEN AND SUFFERING TOE and pieces of pot were literally shanked into the hard floor. it’s trying it’s best, but we’re struggling a bit 😭

That's funny. I'm going to stick some dollar bills on it, just for a minute, to take a photo and show it to my kids. Hmmmm, I might post it on Facebook, too! 😂😂😂

Mine struggles. I did have a successful propagation. But even it has stem turn yellow and fall off. Regularly. 😢. I have mine in the bathroom south facing filtered light ( we have a film over the window. It did perk up and now back to loosing leaves again. So in short trying out your advice. At least I haven’t killed them. Yet

I “overwatered” mine constantly in a south facing porch the last six months and it doubled in size. I’ll maybe move her once spring is sprung though

I recently re-poted my Money Tree. I put two coffee filters at the bottom in hope the soil doesn't seep through. I also mixed some water beads with the soil. Is that ok? 🤔

Every time I water mine I lose a branch of leaves. 😢 I’ve started bottom watering maybe a cup each time. It’s not happy, but I’m not losing leaves anymore.

I unbraided mine because it's possible for water to get in between the trunks and it can rot them.

This is so timely for me! I'm struggling hard with mine and I'm scared to death I'm going to lose him. He's been super healthy until this winter and now he's dropping leaves like crazy! They turn yellow and die. I've had him in an east facing window but this winter's been gray with hardly any sun and I don't know if that's the problem. I transplanted him in hopes that would help and noticed his roots are short and weak looking so I started bottom watering hoping that will help. If anyone has any tips at all I'd appreciate them. 😢

NOTE: He is still sprouting leaves and they're growing ok. Not as quickly as usual though.

My colleagues ruined my plant when I wasn't at work for a long time. Probably too much water. Everyone who walked past in the break room watered it. Now I've seen large pachiras in a mobile phone shop and asked for a cutting. It will soon get roots and stay at home with me!
