- The Money Tree, or Pachira aquatica, is one of the all around very best houseplants that everyone can have success growing. These lovely indoor trees can live for decades, over time often creating bulbous unique trunks. They often come with pre-braided trunks that look amazing over time. In this video I give a brief background on the plants, talk about their general care, give tips for keeping their braids in tact, and finish up with techniques for generating thick trunks, including root pruning. #moneytree #houseplants #plants

My adult daughter just passed away as we were emptying out her house she had only a couple of plants her daughter took one I took the other I took the money plant but the leaves are yellowish with spots on them and some leaves are dropping you could understand I'm sure how important it is for me to keep this plant growing and alive thank you for any help
Im really sorry to hear about your loss :( what you are describing sounds like a foliar fungus, not very serious but can spread throughout the plant and is caused by irregular watering typically. My suggestion is to cut the plant back like I showed and place outside in a shady location once weather permits and it’ll flush out new growth and start a new chapter. Blessings to you
Dear Bonita, seeing your message three months later. My heart cries out for you. Prayers for comfort and strength from our Lord. God bless you! 🫂
So very sorry
Hi Devin. You just saved my money tree. Putting it outside to dry out did the trick! It was overwatered, and now looks fabulous. Also your advice about needing to be pot bound before transplanting was well taken! Thanks, you really love plants.
Glad I could help! Makes me so happy to hear
Thank you Devin! I’ve never wanted one until now 😂
Thank you for the information!
I’m glad it piqued your interest!
Thank you for this video. You included a lot of great information about this beautiful plant. I bought a Roberta’s money tree from QVC last October. I love it!
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for your support!
Devin Wallien, thank you for this very informative video on Pachira aquatic, the Money Tree. I've never seen such a huge Money Tree in person or in the plant expert channels. Quite amazing your tree is 25 years old! I think you are the real deal. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your kind words :-) thankfully my parents taught me from a young age!
OMG - how gorgeous are those trees! Great information :)
Thank you! Cheers!
I have had one for a year and this was extremely helpful! I don’t typically have much success at keeping plants alive so this is exciting to have it still living after a year! 🎉❤😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Devin❤. I’ve learned something new!
🙏🙏
Thank you! My money trees are babies, so it was certainly nice to see how large they can grow in containers. Great lesson!
Glad it was helpful!
Really appreciate the trunk thickening tips!
You bet!
Excellent vid! Really appreciate the info since I’ve been interested in getting one. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful!
What a great and informative video. Thanks
And all of your money trees are so so beautiful
So nice of you
I have two I’ve had for 7 years hoping to eventually have huge trunks. Thank you for the tips learned a lot. Peace & Green Blessings 💚
I hope this video helped!!
@@plantvibrations it did!
I just take home my first money tree plan. Like two monts ago. I always wan t to take care of this plant. So I want to see your video that I sow last year. That make me whant to have this plant even more. I like your video and your tips of biger trunk. That is new for me. I alwas love the nice foliage I didnt even notise nice trunk that I love...
Good luck!
Thank you beautiful plants 🪴 very pleasant video
So nice of you
Hi Devin! Always interested in this plant so ❤ this video! BTW, I love my new Sansai plant lights!
They arrived?! I’m glad they are working well!!
@plantvibrations Yes! I ordered them from Amazon the day you posted the video about them. I had them the next day and I hit a sale. 10-15% off. I got the single pot clip light which throws out alot of light and the 40 watt so 4 pronged light. Can't believe the difference in the light level. Thank you again!
I've had one for 12 years now and is about 6 feet tall (without the pot). You taught me some useful tips! Thanks!
I imagine yours is a beauty!
Plz help me!! My daughter bought me my $ tree about 9-10 yrs ago. I've just let it grow w/o pruning & I've only repotted it probably twice. After watching your vid I think it's pot is way too big but I'm still confused on how much I should trim back
bc it's looking pretty sad these days. The leaves it does have are wilted & it's just not looking good at all.
How do you control the growth?
@fousies I just prune it back to the height I want to keep it at, and it fills back in in no time.
I love the money tree. Wish I had one in my backyard lol
Me too!!
Thanks for the video! The tree in Chinese is called 发财树 (basically - Prosperity Tree). People like them because its good luck to help bring fortune/wealth. Guessing the Chinese began cultivating them first for this reason.
Thanks for sharing!!
How would you fix a leggy money tree
Cut the top off about 3” above where the braid ends
@@plantvibrations ok once I cut the top off can I propagate what I cut off or is it a lost cause? Does it take long for the money tree to branch back out since there is nothing left but the trunk and the roots? Please advice because I'm lost at this moment. I don't have problems with my other one because I learned from this one..lol
Love your tree i am trying to get my staying alive, thank you for sharing
You can do it!
Thank you,very helpful...
🙌🙌
I have a money tree growing between cement bricks and it is doing great, it is not that big in size about 6ft. But I am amazed that we never water it but it is still thriving.
Wow that sounds like an awesome way for it to grow
informative video
Thanks for watching!
I have 2 of them they are great.
l love them!
Thanks!
Wow thank you mark for your support!!
Hey, thank you for the straightforward video! Can you explain how you keep your plants from attracting bugs and infestations while being outdoors and preventing them from spreading it to the other plants when we bring it indoors? I know some people give it bonide and isolate it, and it's a lot of work 😭
I've never had problems with getting bugs while the plants are outside. the plants are healthiest while outdoors and that keeps them resilient against pests. its when they are indoors in a forced environment that their immunity decreases making them more susceptible. i wouldn't worry about that
all those money plants this man must be rich...
hahaha
😂
I like that! 😂😂😂
I'm going to put some dollar bills on my money tree, just for a minute or so to take photos of it. Lol
Thanks for the info. I had one and it was thriving but then I transplanted it into a bigger pot and it lost most of it's leaves. I'm so sad. It's holding on for dear life.
hopefully this video will help bring some new life into your plant!
Love money trees , i have a big one
They’re awesome!!
Devin thanks I have one 4, 6 year .
🙌🙌🙌
Hello. Thanks for sharing. Your plants are beautiful.
I inherited a 20 year old Pachira and it's not doing very well. It grew without braiding and appears weak. Will it be possible to cut the 3 stems you have, place them to take root, plant and braid them? And discard the entire current base where the braid is, as it is quite dry (it looks ugly). Thank you
I’ve tried a few times to propagate via stem cuttings as you propose but I’ve not had success rooting them. Perhaps using root hormone can help
Thanks for the great video! Please, I have a question and hope for some help.
We have a money tree in our house (based in UK). It has grown in a full on tree, reaching the ceiling of the room. It is quite close to a window so it does have some direct light, the window is orientated south west.
It is braided with four main small trunks, each one of them generating a branch.
The question is, the branches have gone really long and high. Now, all the leaves of the lower part have gone quite yellow and I had to remove them. Leaving 3/4 of the plant without leaves. Only having leaves in the high part of the tree. Is there a way for us to bring some growth to the lower part of the tree? Is pruning going to help?
I hope it makes sense and I am open to any suggestion! Thanks.
Hi Devin, when do I remove the black bands from the bottom sides of my plant?? Just bought them and don’t know how long to leave them on for!! Thank you
Once you start to see the stem turning gray (becoming woodier) you can safely remove the band
Great video and your tree is massive! I do have a Question: my money tree has droopy leaves, do u know what is the reason? Other then that it looks healthy and pushing out new leaves
The droopy happens when leaves get big or when they are making new leaves! Nothing to worry about
Awesome!!! New subscriber here from Canada. Just wondering if you guys ship to Canada. Thanks!
thanks for your support! unfortunately i can't ship to canada :(
Thank you for the informative video! I think my money tree is having root rot after the repotting and a thin layer of grayish white formed on the surface of the soil. Is there any solutions?
Just let it stay drier from here on out
QUESTION:
U mentioned about doing a separate video for propagating money trees.
Has it been posted yet?
I searched for it & haven't seen anything yet?
Thank u!🙏🏻
It has been trickier to prop successfully than I thought. Re other question, yes you can prune back to where it was cut back last time or wait for it to get taller; your choice
@@plantvibrations
Thank u for clarifying!👍🏻🙏🏻
I'm sure u will figure out the propagation tricks soon.😊 Look forward to seeing this video when u do post it.
@@plantvibrations
Ok, sounds good👍🏻
Thank u for clarifying 🙏🏻
I look forward to seeing ur propagation video when the time is right.😊
That's a beautiful houseplant. I live in your area in NJ near the Commadore Barry Bridge. Can you recommend a place to buy good quality plants in this area? I do watch you on QVC.
hi! thank you for your support!! hmm thats a good question, i primarily do my plant shopping at wholesale nurseries. but a couple good ones in my area (which may be kind of far for you) are Wedgewood Gardens Nursery and Gardeners Nursery
@@plantvibrations Wedgewood is about 30 minutes away. I will definitely visit. Looking forward to seeing you on QVC!
Hi, my daughter just gave me a Japanese money tree for Mother’s Day. She bought it from a farmers market. It is not braided at all. Just one trunk(diameter around base is about 12 inches, height about 9 inches). It has two very long skinny shoots and a few smaller shoots.. what do i do with this? Can i braid the shoots and go from there?
If it is still pliable you can try to braid it!
Thank you. The shoots are very thin and pliable. So then would i cut it pack so it will thicken up with new shoots off of those new cuts
Do u remove the bands they put around the bottom trunk balls ? I was told I needed to.
Yeah remove them
i didn’t know about continuing to braid my money tree and now it’s leaf-stems are quite long, almost all 5-6 of them shooting out in different directions, and it looks kind of dumb. what should i do? trim them down so new growth starts? try to braid them? (i don’t think this would be possible without some force…) please help! tia
Send me a photo on ig and I can give an idea. It’s hard to understand from your description
I learned so much from your video. Thanks 🙏
Love hearing that!
Me too me too 🙏🙏🤗👌
Where can I get this Roberta’s Fertilizer? It’s not in the description.
Plant-vibrations.com !
Any chance you still plan on making the propagation video still???
I had a lot of difficulty getting them to root!
Your tress are absolutely stunning! I’m having the hardest time with mine. I’m on my second one and I’m not sure he’s going to make it. 😢
Hopefully there were some good tips in the video!!
Great tips. I’m just not sure what I’m doing wrong. I want to buy another one and do the opposite just to see if I can figure it out 🤦♀️🤷♀️🫣
When you say "cut back" before you put it outside in the summer, do you cut ALL the foliage/leaves off?? Thanks for the insight!
Yes cut back ALL of it! It will grow back healthier and denser
So wait for summer? Only problem is, I live in Arizona where our summers are extremely hot. My money tree is very tall and leggy. I just wonder if I should prune mine all the way down now, during spring?
❤ just food for water only
:)
Great advice! My money tree just got so tall and lanky. Sounds silly but is it bad luck to cut a tall one down?
Definitely not! It is an important thing to do to keep them healthy
Hi did you have put money under the pot before plants it thanks I just get one 3days ago .
Hahah no i didn’t
What to do if the leaves have black dots ,any idea?Thank you!
Hmm there could be a number of different causes for it, it’s hard to say without seeing it
Show a video trimming the money tree I have a money tree but I don't know how to trim it
I’ll try to
Help please! I bought a money tree plant in October, I repotted it and it began to drop leaves and leaves where turning yellow and have notches in them. It took about a month or more for the soil to dry out so I became worried about root rot so I stopped watering. I also became concerned that I may have planted the trunk a little to low in the soil, so is pushed the soil away from the trunk. It seemed to help it came back and with lots of new foliage. But now here it is May I haven't lost anymore leaves since December or any yellow leaves. BUT now I noticed one of the trunks on it is dried out at the bottom like if its dehydrated. Is there any way of saving it? Any recommendations? Thank You
Hmm well I’m glad you fixed it being too low in the soil, that will definitely kill it, likewise the soil should stay wet for no more than 3-4 days. Consider moving it outside in a shaded area for summer
Ive overly attached to this money tree i bought years ago, unfortunately im down to only two stems, is there anywhere a new stem could grow? Ive done what you said by cutting the top of one of my stems(as a test cause i dont wanna kill it) and hoping that'll promote a new shoot growing to make it bushier. If there is a way to send you a photo and get some more tips that would be greatly appreciated, thank you for this video though ill watch it a few times
You can send me a photo via Instagram
Should it get outside light or indirect inside ? Mine is turning yellow soft leaves and fall off :( its inside with all day indirect light
Place outside for summer in a shaded area
My money tree is top heavy, 2 years ago, 2 of the braid trucks dried up and fell off. So mine has 1 stem 5 feet tall very bushy on top. What do you suggest?🤥
Chop the top off and it’ll regrow and thicken up the trunk
Great video! Can a Momey Tree be planted in a self watering pot?
I don’t see why not, I’ve honestly never used one before
@@plantvibrations so far so good... Plant 🪴 is looking good!
❤❤❤❤
🙏
My money tree’s stems are dry and wrinkly. Hoping they will get smooth and plump this spring
👍👍
I need your plant expertise!! My money trees are only 5 yrs old, about 6ft tall but hardly any branches or leaves. How can I keep it short and full I stead of so tall it's pushing against my ceiling?
You need to just cut it back like I mentioned
Help I’m killing my new money plant and idk how to distinguish the difference because it’s similar to all the issues you said it could happen
you can send an image via instagram and i can try to diagnose
Which grow light is that in your plant? It looks like a small type of led? And for the soil mix is that also sphagnum moss in your soil mix??
You can find a link to the light in the description below! and yes it is sphagnum moss
@@plantvibrations Awesome thank you!
We have a money tree whose trunks didn't grow twisted. It was a gift for my husband. He just let the trunks grow straight up. Can we twist the stalks now or will it kill the plant? The plant is probably about 15 years old. Plus it's getting too tall and has surpassed the top of the windows. Is there a way to shorten it or cut it back? I know this is a lot. We don't know what to do and don't want to kill it.
Send me a photo on Instagram and I’ll show you where you can cut
My money tree is 15ft and has flowered - just like the flower shown in your vid. I understand they have to be 10yr old before they flower ! I'd like to send you a photo but I can't find a place to do that!
Perhaps you can send me a photo via Instagram!

I have a money tree that i've had for about 13 years. I knew nothing about plants then so it's never been pruned. Naturally it's gotten quite spindly and since it lives on my kitchen table i would like to trim it back. Can i cut all the foliage off? If i want to take it all the way back to the braid should i do that in stages (years)?
Do it all in one fell swoop
Ok thank you! I find pruning slighly terrifying :/@@plantvibrations
What would it look like if unbraided?
Still pretty, just a little more wild
Hi I’m new to the channel and just bought a money tree from heb and I water it with 2 ice cubes every Wednesday is that all it needs? Also is it normal to be sideways ?
I wouldn’t recommend using ice cubes. Normal water is fine. If it’s leaning to one side, rotate it regularly
@@plantvibrations ok I’ll just start doing that. Thank you and have a blesssd day
QUESTION:
Thank u for the video Devin 🙏🏻
Would u pls explain in detail or do a video how much & where to cut back the leaves at the beginning of summer?
Thank u again!
There will be a point along the stems where the leaves' green stems start to turn into brown woodier stems. you want to cut in the green section about an inch above where that woodiness section begin
@@plantvibrations
CLARIFICATION:
Thank u for replying so quickly
I bought my plant (small pot, 1 foot tall) from a store last year.
Lol, I wish I could send or post a photo. I'll do my best to describe . . .
Looking at the leaves & stems now, each has a singular stem growing up, which branch off into multiple leaves. The new stems r about 8 inches tall.
If I'm understanding correctly, if I cut back to where the the stems start to look woodier, it looks like it would be back to where the plant was originally pruned to before being shipped for selling (cut the 8 inches new stems off, down to the top of the main trunks).
Would that sound correct?
Would pruning this much still encourage the trunk to grow in height & more full foliage?
Or should I wait 1 or 2 years (allow the new stem growths to get a bit woody) before I prune?
Thanks in advance!🙏🏻
is it better to fertilize the money tree after you transplant?
Give it a month after transplant before fertilizing
That big money tree plant is gorgeous, I have a small money tree plant but the braid can undone and I only have i stem root, so sad
can you rebraid it?
@@plantvibrations no I just have one stem or trunk
I'm down to two and one of the trunks feels soft at the bottom. Leaves super small. I only have north facing windows.
So how are you going to water it? Keep it in the cache or remove? You struggled to drop it in
Keep it in the cache for now!
But all drained water will be sitting in the cache pot
@jul7673 he's quite experienced, he knows how much water to use without it drowning. I would use a large saucer, any pooling water can be removed with a baster.
My trunk is sprouting leaves, do you think it's time tore-plant?
Just nub the sprouts out like I show in the video
What type of soil you use? Can I use any kind of soil or the tomatoes soil will work for money tree?do you meant by soil for indoor?
I would suggest a houseplant potting mix
@@plantvibrations do you meant by soil indoor?
I keeps watering mine once a month for ten years.
Nice and easy!
Do you have any idea where it’s possible to buy them from seed? Amazon has sellers with fake seeds
Hmm I’m not sure, perhaps Etsy
Hi! Can you do a video explaining what to do when there are a lot of yellow leaves on your money tree too? :(
Check for drainage! If it is in too much water that often causes it
Shouldn't you take more of the old soil out of the root ball when repotting it?
I could’ve washed it off but it doesn’t really matter or affect anything
If you put them outside don’t bugs go in and then you bring them in?
I never worry about bugs but you can follow this protocol if desired czcams.com/video/8WVlEwyZiXU/video.html
could i grow my money tree in just water?
I wouldn’t recommend it
Do we want direct sunlight or not 🤷🏽♀️
Inside the home ‘direct’ light behind a window is great. But if you put outside in the warmer months, direct light would be too much
@@plantvibrations Thank you.
Nah…with all this work I would definitely replant it in a larger pot; it’s a big beautiful plant and deserves a larger home.
It is just so hard to move as is, and i don't know if I'd be able to in an even larger pot!
I would like to get one but I don’t want to do all that work 🤣 I don’t have a green thumb 🤣
Try it!!
Show us how to cut it back please.
I'll try to make a video soon
Just got one for our home to improve air quality. After 1st day you could tell the difference. Let us know when you restock plant food 😄
Great!! I’ll let youknow :)
My daughter accidentally threw the plant over causing all of the soil to come out. Since then it has been dying. Is it possible that the tree was damaged? All the leaves are turning yellowish. I notice the soil wasn't compact anymore and I just press the soil together to make the it more compact. It's always been in indirect sunlight and was thriving and I watered it maybe every 7-10 days it drained well. Sigh😢. I hope this helps because I just became a plant mom and was doing so well with this until her accident.
It should definitely bounce back! Give it some time to recover and remove any leaves that may be yellowing. If possible place outside in a shaded area during summer and it’ll bounce back even quicker
@@plantvibrations Thank you for responding. I noticed yesterday that the soil was holding onto the wate. I watered it over a week ago and it was still damp at the top. I'm almost certain that's not supposed to happen. Plus I had to pull up one of the roots because it was to soaked and rotted. I don't know if I poured too much water(well I guess I did ). Should I leave it outside all day? I put it on the Western side today against the Sun then brought it in right before the sun hits that side. I did that yesterday and still I have more yellow leaves after pruning it and putting it outside. Should I change the soil or just wait it out to see if it rebounds?
Add some fresh potting soil and perlite. Be sure your pot has a drain hole. Watch that the leaves do not get sun burned.
Tie a red ribbon on it for love .
That old tree is probably worth $5K at least LOL Look like a big bonsai.
Lol

Don’t I know it!
Why does this look like an Asian house? Coming from an Asian 😅
Lolol
Please don't braid the poor things! It started as a gimmick which has unfortunately caught on. Totally unnatural.
Im not sure I would call it a gimmick. Unnatural yes, but so is keeping plants indoors. Generally I would agree with the sentiment though, to keep things natural regarding forcing, unnecessary pruning etc, but the braiding does create a full looking plant
Finally, somebody else who isn’t afraid to root prune! I’ve seen so many people taking hours to comb out, or trying to untangle miles of roots into single strands with a little rake then pruning an inch or two off of each one 😂. The bread knife (or saw if the 😖plant is really huge) is by far the easiest, and I think best method. Well done that man 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫢
Hahah glad you appreciate!!
