- When filmning this video we missed talking about the potential threat of trace minerals in the tap water. The minerals are often fluoride, chlorine and sodium used to clean the tap water.
These minerals can build up inside the plant and especially the tips of the leaves causing them to get yellow and brown (meaning that it kills the cells). To avoid this problem use distilled water, rainwater or filtered water.
Another way can be to leave tap water out in a container for 24-48 hours before using it to water you’re plants. This will make most of the chemicals disappear.
Another cause for the yellow and brown tips can be salt buildup from to much fertiliser.
As many of you has mentioned we got the wrong name for one of the varieties. It should be Calathea majestica “Whitestar” and not Calathea ornata “Pinstripe”. Thanks!

60 year old indoor plant lover from Germany here. Your videos are the most informing ones.
Sometimes it feels like the plants choose you for speaking out for them like: hey guys, this man is our mouth, listen and don’t torture us any longer! :)
I learned a lot from you, especially about transpiration and so on. My plants say : thank you! They are happier than before.
Btw, I had children, cats and dogs, no one had a problem with the poison plants. I think the secret is: create a situation, which is not boring and they will have other things in mind :)
Sorry for my bad English, just wanted to give you a positive reply
Du solltest Videos machen :)
I work in a big box store in California, USA. If you want to buy one of these plants make sure you get them when they've only been in the store a few days. After that they will be showing a lot of signs of Browning due to the cold weather and lack of humidity. And they will not look so good. And check the prices if they are in different pots because there can be a huge price difference depending on what pot there in. a basic pot can be a $10 price difference compared to a Fufu pot for the same plant. And in the summertime always check the clearance rack to see if you can get one that is able to be nursed back to health at a good price.
I'm a plant novice, got a Calathea just because it's beautiful, then got a little worried after researching it and hearing how difficult it is supposed to be. But mine got about 10 new leaves since December and it started flowering a couple of days ago so I seem to be doing something right! Gorgeous plants :)
I'm slightly new to indoor plants as well. I'm hoping I can keep my new beautiful calathea happy as well!
I find Calatheas a piece of cake - north facing window, rain water and humidity. But I am dreadful with spider plants, and those are supposed to be easy!
I think a lot of it has to do with where you live and whether you’re going to be accidentally neglectful or over attentive! Before I knew anything about plants I over watered, and I also live in a pretty warm humid location. So my calatheas were fine- cactuses not so much!
I also have surprisingly no major problems with Calatheas. They flower, grow and love life.
But those stupid spider mites, who showed up after a year…🤬
@@holyfox94 wow, to read this just now. I discovered spider mites on my calatheas this evening. For the first time.
Your videos are by far the most educational, professional and detailed ones regarding each spieces of plant! Really enjoying them! Well done!
Absolutely, I agree!
I totally agree! 💯
I wish he would cover most of the common house plant species. I learned more from watching one of their videos than I did watch 20 other videos combined.
I've a Calathea Triostar which is nearly 12 years old. In the last few years it has grown enormous shoots with hand like clusters of leaves at the end. I've never seen an image of one like this though I've looked on the internet. It seems happy enough.
Everytime you say “plönt” it makes me smile.
I’m Swedish so when you talk it’s nostalgic :)
Is there no way for him to say PLANT and EXCESS not access? Is that a Swedish thing too?
@@musclemanawesomeness5550 he just has an accent?
@@gertrudethenepenthes2393 TRUE but its only pronouced on those words?
@@musclemanawesomeness5550 certain words and syllables can just be difficult to pronounce for example;
in Swedish we have three ‘extra’ letters ö, ä, and å. These are pronounced very differently than how English would just pronounce o, a, and a.
-Ä is pronounced more closely to English e, like the a in “ayyy” (but without the y), kinda like “aerh” or “aeih”, more of an e, i and a mix.
-Å is pronounced quite similarly to O in English, kinda like “oeh”.
-And Ö is pronounced like “er” almost, it has more of an a at the beginning and is closer to ä, but they do have a difference, I find that ö sounds like it has a R at the end more so than Ä.
Point being, he probably just has a more difficult time on those types of words in English(ones with a or o, etc) more so than other words because of the fairly different pronunciation in Swedish :)
If I didnt have friends in Stockholm I might come closer to believing that its hard to say but we talked about this. We think he is using a latin A because that "a" like the nasal "a" ...sounds wrong to him. But it is easily over come by just saying it. The same is true for English speakers learning to speak Chinese or Japanese... you just have to say it correctly until it sounds right. Which is probably a few weeks. He on the other hand has mastered the pronunciation of most other English words without much accent. The second thing is a confusing of the words access and excess. These are pronounced correctly but misused. Understandable, but also easy to fix in edit. These videos are highly edited, just ask him to change out access and excess when necessary. "...access to (available) water" vs "...having excess (too much) water". Love the channel. Great information, probably the best plant education site i've seen. Nothing wrong with friendly criticism.
This was the absolute best video I’ve seen on Calathea care! Thank you!
Every episode you bring a plethora of plants of the same variety. I'm sure many viewers would love to see your nursery. I know I would.
I’m avid gardener, I have about 103 plants inside my house that are not moving outside even in summer. This was the best and the most rewarding advice of real gardeners for me. I thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, advice and tips. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How do you manage the many plants in doors . I have alot of plants but are really bothering me

This was the video I was waiting for!! I love Calatheas, and I want to have them all! They were almost my first plants as they're easily findable and non-toxic (living with a cat) and they've never let me down. They're beautiful, they show you when they're happy, and they move all day long, as you said, which always makes me smile when I see it move on its own, out of nowhere.
Love, love, love calatheas forever.
I know what you feel, I am another calathea lover still looking for new plants! I recently bought orbifolia and lancifolia and I am really happy to see them growing well :) How many calatheas do you have?

This could be of great help to the different varieties of Calatheas that I have. Thank u so much for the information .😊
do you leave her in the bathroom or remove her after your shower? also how often do you water her?
@@veronicaglover2322 i leave her in bathroom and in morning I put her in window east facing for her to get light, she gets about 2 hrs of bright light and at night I put her in bathroom again and I go shower
And I water her once a week, or I make sure top of soil is dry about an inch or two, and I only water her with filtered water or rain water
@@veronicaglover2322 i shower at night so I leave her in shower with door close over night and in morning put her in window to get light, and I water her once a week but I make sure her top layer of soil is dry

Learning a lot from your videos. Thank you from the Philippines!!!
Excellent! So much information- I feel like I just attended a Calathea masterclass. Thank you!! 🙏🏼
just got my first Calathea! super excited to watch it grow :)
I am experienced with plants but my first try on Calathea failed. I bought a large pot and left it in shade outside. After October, I brought it in and placed in an East window. The plant declined and died within a few months indoors. I think the shock from outside to inside is too much. After watching your video, I bought a few more. Your explanations make great sense. Let's see how it will go for me this time.
Finally!!! Thank you 😄
Honestly, this is the most informative channel! I've learned soo much, thanks!
I learned something each time I listen to him to
I love this channel ❤ You guys are so educated & precise
I love how professional and detailed this video was, exactly what we need for such a demanding plant. My calathea ornata's leaves have been drooping down and this helped me realize that it needs more frequent watering, so thank you.
Best video I seen so far thanks so much
The most important thing is to NEVER use tap water! Only rainwater or distilled water.... chemicals in tap water can destroy the leaves!
I use tap water. No problems with all my Calatheas. Depends on where you live and the type of tap water you have.
i use tap water, and ours has chloramine, fluoride, and lots of mineral hardness. no problems.
Thank goodness, I watered mine 10 mins before reading this, using tap water.
@MultiTroll84 not sure why people have to be so aggressively dismissive or self assured when they haven’t actually lived in every country in the world. I live in Germany and our Calatheas react instantly to tap water. We always use rain water and in winter distilled water.
@MultiTroll84 yeah nah mate. my australian tap water also hurt this plant, a shame cos i keep it in the bathroom. I collect rainwater for this precious princess.
Tons of knowledge and to the point..great work..Thank you😊
Thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge...😊👍
Perfect and complex info. just all i needed. Thanx!!!!!
So much to learn, however, you explain the instructions very well. Thank you

Thankyou so much for this video and especially the one on self watering with pumice. I could never make a calathea or stromanthe happy until I planted them in self watering last summer. They are THRIVING. They are so happy which makes me so happy. I love your videos. I have had houseplants for over 45 years and still I've learned so much from your videos and have referred many people to your channel. You explain things so very well. Thankyou so much.
By far the best and most complete video on Calatheas out here! 👏👏
I bought my first calathea crocata few months ago, so far it has been happy here without any problems. It has such pretty orange flowers, so im glad to learn more about it and do everything right to keep it nice and healthy.
Well that was comprehensive! So far I’ve lucked out with common ones but I just got a couple of more fussy types and now I feel empowered to keep them lush 💜 thank you 🙏
Ahhhhhh yesssss!!! 😍 so excited for this one!! I missed you guys 🤗 Although I know it’s not technically a calathea anymore, my orbifolia just put out a leaf as big as my head! 🤩 it’s so beautiful I love it. It’s in a self watering and surprisingly has made it through winter with not too much damage.
Absolutely love your channel! So informative!
These videos help me sleep. Thank you !
Thank you very much for your video, is the best video. Very helpful. Love it.
Thank you! I am a calathea novice and I bought one because I thought it was pretty look at, never considered how finicky it was! I’m glad I found your video coz now I can relax a little bit and hopefully make my plant happy!

Thank you - SKF
Thank you so much for this video. I absolutely love Calatheas and have had a really hard time growing them! Every time I th8nk 8m going to give up on them I see one that I can’t resist!! I’ve taken one of mine to the nursery cause it’s leaves were curling. Lady told me I was watering it too much but I know I wasn’t. Now I hear you say it’s the humidity so I will put it near the humidifier to see if that works. Your video is so thorough and covers everything. New to your channel and I just hit the subscribe button! Thank you so much!
Love your videos they cover a lot about the plants, you are very good at explaining things😢
Thank Goodness for your existence!
Very informative. Many thanks from Hamburg 😊hopefully my calathea will get better after watching this
Covered everything in the best possible way.
I purchased the Calathea Makoyana yesterday on a whim as it was just so beautiful. I didn't know anything about this plant and I was looking for a detailed video for care as I obviously want to take care of it to the best of my ability.
This was a very informative video and I truly appreciate all the research and information you have provided. I am subbed now to ensure that future plants I buy are all taken care of as well. 😊
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you take us through all the challenges that we might encounter with Calathea’s. I’m so impressed with your knowledge and content that I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too. I only have two Calathea’s at the moment so I’m learning a lot about them.
I think I’m in love with this channel!!😊
Very Insightful video. Thank you
Great video! Calatheas are my favorite plant. But that one you called Calathea Ornata (Pinstripe) is actually a Calathea Majestica (White Star). Well, now they’re actually called Goeppertia, no longer Calathea.
Very interesting indeed!!!! Thanks for sharing so valuable information. Regards from Argentina.
Blooming’ ‘eck, what fuss pots lol! I have 7 purchased over one year… newbie to indoor plants, lol!! Thanks for this. Extremely informative.
I just bought this plant. Thank you for the advice.Mama Long Greenville Tx 👍
