Calathea Care: Dottie 911

  • My Calathea Dottie is looking a little rough mid-Spring which means that it's time to wash it leaves, repair broken stems and get rid of old and dying flowers. My Dottie had three blooms this year and it is taking a toll on the outer leaves, so we'll look at that as well. Finally, I'll also share where my Dottie lives, the light it gets and some of my other basic care tips for calatheas.

    I use a soft cloth with diluted dish soap to wash the leaves of all my plants. And I water with aquarium water. 💖🪴

    She's looking gorgeous after he "bath!" Good to know they can take a little morning sun. Looking forward to mine growing this spring/summer!

      Oh, she needed it! I've noticed that a lot of my lower light plants seem to enjoy morning sun--I just move them back a bit once summer hits as the rays are a lot more intense. 😊

    Calathea are so amazing. By far my favorite houseplant. I only have 3 but am looking to get more eventually. I have my eye on a Makoyana currently.

    Beautiful ♡ thank you for sharing! I had no idea you could help salvage the leaves by taping them.

      Hi 😊. Well, after a few days--I have noticed that stem can't move the same way that it used to be able to, though it does the leaves a bit at night. Most of the tissues are still connected, just a little strained from the leaf hanging off the end. My hope is that it will preserve the leaf longer without so much strange. I'll definitely share an update about how successful it actually is in the long run, though!

    I instinctively taped the stem of my calathea lutea after it was broken by one of my cats. That was about 2 months ago and it is is still healthy. It's not pretty, though, because I used washi tape! LOL. Your dottie looks great! I will look for flower tape. Thank you! 💚

    Hi! Thank you for sharing your beautiful Dottie! I was wondering where about you would cut a leaf off. I have a few larger Calathea and feel I'm trimming dead leaves off in the wrong spot stopping any new growth.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      This is a really good question. I've gotten it a few times recently. Some new growth does come from existing stems, so cutting it back to the soil potentially cuts away any new growth that would have generated from that stem. The other type of new growth comes from the calathea's creeping rhizomes, growing under the soil and then breaking the soil, growing away from the existing plant. These little plantlets can eventually be divided to make a new plant though you'd want to wait until your existing plant is full enough to not miss one of its plantlets. However, I have two approaches to dealing with cutting back stems/leaves on calathea. The first is, if the stem looks healthy, like it is capable of producing new growth, I cut the leaf back but leave the stem. A lot of the time, I will wait until I see that new growth starting to come up before doing it. If the steam is older, looks a bit rough, I cut it back as close to the soil as possible; I want the rhizome the growth is coming from to produce more stems but that doesn't always happen. If you look around at pictures of calatheas for sale--you can probably find a picture of what it looks like when a nursery cuts away an unsightly leaf but leaves the stem in tact for potential new growth from the base. Sorry this response is so long--I might make a video of it so I can show the differences. Anyway, hope this is helpful 😊

    If you had taped the leaves immediately after they broke, they might have healed? It has worked for me.

    I hope you see this comment as this is an older video. I just purchased a Dottie yesterday and I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to care for it. I have been reading a lot about how susceptible it is to spider mites. is there a preventative measure I can take so that mine doesn’t get them? The thought of them is 🤢🥴

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 3 lety

      I do have a couple of videos about spider mites on this channel; I also have a video about a neem oil soil drench that I've been using to attempt to deter larger spider mite infestations. I am not sure how helpful those videos would be--but the neem oil soil drench videos are what I've been doing most recently!

      Yes--the Dottie has dark green leaves that can look almost black as they mature. The pattern on the leaves are vibrant pink.

      I ordered mine from a seller on www.etsy.com who shipped it to me from Florida. However, not all sellers ship to my area--so when you find one, be sure that they will ship to your location. You can see the results for a Calathea Dottie on Etsy here: www.etsy.com/search?q=calathea%20dottie. Good luck!

    Are the buds with flowers going to be new leaves?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před rokem +1

      No, they eventually dry up like an old leaf. If you wait long enough, you can tug them out rather easily once they're done blooming.

    what do you use to clean down your calatheas leaves? is this a diluted neem oil mix? or just water?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety

      In this video, it was distilled water alone. I do use a diluted neem mixture but a bit sparingly as I've seen varying ideas around whether or not it clogs the stoma.

  • @firstilareestaclara7301

    Can I give drinking water (bottled) for that calathea roseopicta dottie? Or is it just distilled water or from raindrops? Because in my area there is no distilled water and it is dry season. Thank you.
