  • In this new series, I walk through my struggling calathea collection, plant-by- plant, to assess what's wrong and what I can do to help improve the health of each one. I'm continuing this series with my Calathea Medallion v2. Hang out with me while I figure out what's happening with the plant and do what I can to help it get better.

    Hi Addy! It's great to see you!! I'm so happy to hear about your progress w/ the Calathea, and was especially glad to hear more about your technique for bringing back a plant after it dies back. I have an anthurium that has died back to one leaf and didn't know if continuing to water it was a good idea or if I should just toss it. Since it's spring/summer, I'm going to give it one more shot. I cleaned the leaf, checked for pests and gave it water and fertilizer, so we'll see what happens. I know it's not root rot - if anything it's likely dehydrated. I'm looking forward to more of this series!!

      Hi! ☺️ Oh, I hope your anthurium bounces back! Please let me know how it does. I've been so surprised by how resilient many of my calatheas are and now realize I've likely tossed plants that I could have probably brought back without realizing it. I just scheduled a new video for tomorrow continuing the series; it has been such a relief getting my plants back in shape even though I always dread fussing with them.

    It’s great to see another video from you! I have to say I’ve learned so much from your videos and recommend your channel to people interested in Calatheas. Amending the soil has been a complete game changer! I bought a Dottie this winter that ended up having cold damage. I potted it down to an appropriate sized pot, heavily amended the soil and watered consistently. It regrew beautifully, pushing out 5 leaves at a time. It looks like a full plant again! Still struggling a bit with a small Princess Jessie, but know my patience will pay off.

      Oh, thank you. ☺️ The Dottie is such a gorgeous calathea. It was a wishlist plant for a long time and then after getting it, it's still one of my very favorites. My Princess Jessie needs some work and will probably show up on this series at some point!

      @@AddyBeez it’s definitely one of my favorites, too! My plant collection is based around dark/black foliage, so the Dottie (and Princess Jessie) is a must!

    I didn't hear you mention beneficials??? I would highly recommend you invest in Beneficials. They are a life saver! I spotted some spider mites again in my office and immediately ordered my tiny army! The shipper was delayed on Friday, so looking forward to tomorrow. Every day, I inspect my plants known to have had spider mites and immediately dab the adults with alcohol until my army arrives!

      I haven't bought any yet! I keep thinking all of my plants are being ravaged by spider mites but just yesterday found edema crystals on one.

    Appreciate your calathea videos so much, I am sort of going through a very similar issue with my makoyana. I kept thinking it had root rot, but when I checked saw a bunch of healthy large rhizomes and white roots. I suspect that this past year I wasn’t able to keep up with the humidity during the winter and wonder if my calatheas just sort of gave up and stopped. I have them hydrospiked because I’m awful at watering. Recently moved everyone into the bathroom permanently where they’ll probably get less light but at least more humidity and I think most are starting to look better. But I think it will also take awhile before they recover from the harsh dry winter I put them through.

      I hope the bathroom works out to be a good place; winter wasn't so bad here this year but I did have a few small humidifiers going. Sometimes it's so hard to find the right place, depending on what's going on! 😀

    Hi Addy, ThankYou for sharing your calathea videos. They are my favourite plants . I ve lost so many, but I ve learned a lot too. What kind of soil do you use and do you recommend terracota vs plastic pots? I usually find a plastic pot would good drainage and then I insert that inside a nice decorative pot.. ThankYou ❤

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před rokem

      They are my favorites, too! I've also lost some and learned some, so I definitely feel you there. I use Black Gold amended with extra perlite. I tend to use a glazed ceramic pot for my calatheas, and they work pretty well. I did try moving them to terracotta as repots were needed and some do well in terracotta and others don't. I do tend to avoid plastic pots because I've had trouble with them in my house, but I know that this isn't the case for a lot of people. If I never used humidifiers, plastic would probably be just fine but there is something about the conditions in my house that make plastic pots harder for me to deal with (fungal issues, etc).

    Yay I missed you! Medallion V2 is my current wishlist plant along with Fucata! Have you ever had one of those?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety

      Hi! 😀 I do have a Fucata! It is ...hanging in there? I've got an unboxing video of it somewhere, I think. It's actually bouncing back from a rough winter and it will definitely show up on this series--one of my toughest plants. It needs higher humidity than any of my others so I'm thinking about ways I can get it back to health.
