- Hiking the MATAFAO TRAIL has been on my bucketlist since we first moved to American Samoa. I always thought I would go without the kids, but we decided to give it a shot.
Matafao is the highest point on Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, and the trail is definitely difficult. Combine mud and a rainstorm with this already challenging and treacherous trail and that could be a recipe for disaster.
See how our adventure turns out and if we were able to reach the summit.
A great bug THANK-YOU to the National Park rangers who cleared the trail and installed ropes and ladders to make the trail passable!!

I love this, I can literally smell the forests while watching, I would love to go back as an adult, This crazy polongee misses the sunrise and people, Imoanna and Mattava are still 2 of my favourite names!

@@AmSamFam It really doesn't, when we moved from Freddies Beach we moved to Pago Pago, there was a little strip mall that had a video store in it, the road beside it ran toward the mountains, we lived on the side of a hill and had 18 dogs, I loved it, the rain every day, you guys are so inspiring, have you ever heard of wahoo? it is a special kind of Tuna, some Samoans saved me from drowning and it was a gift from Starkist, but to my surprise it was revered, many blessings to you and yours.

Capt Kipper was a total mud ball... lololol..... Looks like Miss Hadley wasnt havent a great day on the trail. Great video though... Probably the only way IM going to see that trail is watch this video again. IM not going up there. lol.

This might be my favorite video so far! I loved going up the trail with your family. I could feel the mud and even smell the humid jungle. Y'all really worked hard! Thank you.
When I lived there as a kid, a friend of mine, Masani, took me and my brother up mt. Tao, the shorter but distinctive peak west of Matafao. He told me flatly the Matafao trail was too hard. I couldn't imagine a trail too hard back then, but from what your video shows, even with a park service trail, it's pretty challenging. Thanks again for such and adventure!

Good call on turning back when you did. Your family was courageous to take on this challenging hike. I will be in Am Samoa in a few weeks filming some hikes and was considering this one. But NPS said they have not maintained the trail since early 2022. So it's probably in terrible shape right now.

I just did this hike on Wednesday and this wasn’t easy at all, the 90 degree day and high humidity made it tough. The views at the top were amazing though! Great video!

Job well done guys and the view is beautiful .Have you guys ever try the national park in Vatia ? And maybe one of those days try to go visit my home town Ta’u Manua and the famous bridge between ofu and olosega in Manua . Love you guys family enjoying different adventures and always finding something fun to do around the island.
We love both of those places! We’ve done the hikes in Vatia many times, but only been out to Manu’a once. We’re looking forward to getting back out there and you’d better believe we’ll be making videos along the way ❤️

It reminds me of all the small hikes I've gone on when I was living there. The hardest was going up Rain maker. Back then there were no trails.
We’ve never hiked up Rainmaker… I think there’s still no trail 🤔 I’m going to have to look into that. Sounds amazing!

For you to do that holding a camera, Outstanding. Do you have a head cam so to use both hands next time?
Yes, the video turns out a lot more bumpy, so I try to go handheld, but it might be worth it next time to capture it all.
Take some rugby boots if that trail is always muddy.

This question might have been asked, how is everyone dealing with the mosquitos there?
We usually cover ourselves in mosquito spray before our hikes, but for some reason I totally forgot this time and yet, I don’t think anyone got a single mosquito bite!
