  • We finally get to close this chapter of our lives where we're wondering where we'll call home and if we can figure it out in time.
    In case you didn't see our part 1, we received a letter informing us that we had 9 days to be disconnected from the dock, here in Pago Pago Harbor. With no available moorings and being in the middle of cyclone season, we didn't want to take any chances.
    We were able to get it all figured out with help from so many great people here in American Samoa and we're settling into our semi-permanent home. Watch what it took to get us here.

    You guys are doing great!
    Life off the dock is very rewarding once you get accustomed to its challenges.
    My input...
    1. Smartest thing you ever did throwing away that inflatable...i knew when i saw you trying to repair it that it wouldn’t end well for that dingy.
    2. New dinghy is perfect for the harbor and calm anchorages...careful not to bang your boat with it!
    3. Outboard engines will ALWAYS let you down when you least expect it...plan for it. Have a handheld vhf that comes in the dinghy with you.
    Also a kayak is great for solo trips to shore since it can be used in the wind on those days when you run out of sugar and the outboard is dead.
    4. A ‘watermaker’ would make your life heavenly...especially since the water around you is so clear...the filters would last a long time between service. The sailing channel ‘sailing emerald steel’ once did a video showing exactly how he built his own, at a fraction of the cost of a commercial unit, which was still working perfectly many years later.

      Wow, thanks for the input! Kayaks aren’t always available on-island, but we were able to get one just about a week ago. Although our whole family can’t fit on it, it’s nice to have some sort of back-up.
      Our boat came with a water maker, but it sat for too long and the membrane dried up. It’s on our list to either get a new membrane or rig up a completely new system, it just hasn’t moved to the top of the list yet. We’ll check out Sailing Emerald Steel though, it would be helpful to see how someone else did it. Thanks!

    SOOOO happy to see that new dinghy! When I first saw how much glue you were having to use on the old one, it was clear it was going to have to wind up where you put it. Anyway, good job all around! I love when you said “it’s all part of the adventure”. I nominate that as AmSamFam’s personal maxim. ❤️

    Can you talk about a typical day living on a sailboat? I'm curious about how much more time and effort goes into doing the basics of everyday life like showering, using the bathroom, getting rid of trash. And on the subject of trash, living on an island, where does the trash and human waste go? You are a strong and adventurous family!

    Talofa family, so sad you guys have to put up with all these nonsense.. why don’t the government utilize all spaces all around the beautiful Pago harbor and build Some civilized harbor slips and make money from the harbor slips, just feel sorry for you guys to have to work so hard to do a simple thing like park a boat 🛥 maybe whoever is engineering or Master planning that beautiful Pago harbor needs to be updated..just thinking out loud.Alofa Atu,,Tofa.

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  Před 2 lety +2

      🤷🏻‍♀️ We’re hoping this new dock extension will have some real slips for sailboats. It would make so much sense, like you said, revenue for the harbor.

    • @tuiesera3231
      @tuiesera3231 Před 2 lety +1

      It’s so sad that it can be a world class harbor, after all it is the main source of income for your island home.

    You chose the lifestyle, and AmSam....suck it up people you are in paradise! By the way, di you guys ever post how much money you take in donations? The good people of Samoa need the donations!!!

    • @Ingrid.seattle
      @Ingrid.seattle Před 2 lety

      These guys aren't asking for donations. What they are doing is making a product. People show they want it by watching, buying the tourist guide or branded merchandise. This all takes a lot of work and they give up a lot of privacy in the bargain. And I'm not disagreeing with you on the point that many people need help right now. Samoans included.
