- We found a new trail!!
Our friends at the National Park of American Samoa have been hard at work, maintaining the existing hiking trails and clearing new trails too.
Today we're showing you The Old Pago Pago Trail. We started at the same trailhead as the Mount Alava Trail, but instead of taking the path most taken, we opted instead for the narrow, steep, and challenging path that meets back up with the main Mount Alava Trail.
This alternate route is about 0.7 miles long (one-way) and includes ropes, natural root steps, and a beautifully visible star mound (tia seu lupe).
We want to thank our sponsors- Bluesky Communications for their continued support of our channel and our island. We wouldn't be able to bring you these videos without their reliable services. Make sure to check out their services, devices, and accessories, including their IOT products.

Nice trail. I really appreciate the time and effort it takes to create and maintain those park trails, particularly in your rainy, heavy growth environment. My salute to all that were involved.
Yes!! Nature grows back so quickly. Our park rangers do a great job staying ahead of it.

Thanks! Alofa Atu ❤️
Very neat video. I suspect that the locals chose higher ground for several reasons. One of which you mention. Defense. What comes to mind are the possibility of Tsunamis due to its vulnerability along the coast on Pacific islands but most likely, to avoid heat and bugs that bring on malaria on lower coastal areas. In Central America the local population centuries before air conditioning and pest control like in the days of the Spanish Main, would congregate on the coast to meat the Spanish galleons but would go up to the hills when the ships left to avoid the wetter and swamp disease ridden carrying infested mosquitos. It was healthier climate up in altitude.
Hmmm, I hadn’t considered that. Maybe, but we definitely have to have plenty of our own bug spray when we go hiking up on top of the mountains 🤷🏻♀️
@@AmSamFam I don't doubt that. I'm sure the thick jungle foilage supports bugs. And I don't know if the mountain altitudes around Samoa go high enough to keep the mosquitos in check with cooler air but the mountains in Central America, Mexico go up quite high with cool nights, less hospitable for mosquitos and less swampy. But still is tropical.
@@comm2531 yep, that makes a lot of sense.
Nice one. You got one of Nate fishing?...
How many years have you and your family been there? AmSamoa must be very generous to you both & your children🤗🤗🤗 Enjoy your new home,🥰💯 & be extra careful and safe🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤍💯
We’ve been here almost 5 years. We love it and yes, the people here are kind and generous ❤️
Theres this water catchment we call vai sima which is located up the hills next to the LMS Pastors house in Pago. Good place for the kids to swim. Check it out. Ask villagers for directions esp familes live across from Pago Park.
We will. Thanks for the idea ❤️
Big advise for your daughter, don’t use the headphones on nature walks 😉 Good to see you hiking again.✊🏼🤙🏼
You know how teenagers are… I was lucky to get her to join us 🤷🏻♀️
@@AmSamFam you’re absolutely right. They get so bored easily. We should encourage teens to go for hikes.
Question , I noticed when go you hiking . A lot of times your family were flip flop sandals . Why don’t you were tennis shoes ?
It’s an island thing just so you know!
Haha, yes! I (Melinda) usually prefer to wear tennis shoes when hiking, but Nate and our kids do usually wear flip flops. Nate doesn’t even own any tennis shoes anymore 😂
Sir I want to come in American Samoa..how please tell
