  • THE DOCK IN PAGO PAGO HARBOR IS GETTING A FACELIFT, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR US ON OUR LIVE ABOARD SAILBOAT?

When we decided to buy our 1974 Ketch sailboat, we knew that someday we might have to survive at anchor, meaning we would have no power or water hookups, but we were in for a surprise this past week when we received a letter informing us that we had TEN days to be disconnected from the dock!
We've been scrambling to figure out a water catchment system and either fix our old dinghy that has completely fallen apart or find a new dinghy and outboard motor on the small island of Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa.
See our creative solution to our water problem and the not-so-pretty solution to our dinghy problem, we're just hoping they both work when it comes time to cast off and anchor out in Pago Pago Harbor.
Are we ready?? Only time will tell.
Thanks for following our adventures. Don't forget to share our channel with friends and family to help us reach more people.

I lived in Tafuna in 1981 and then we moved to Freddies beach in 82. We lived in the last apartment closet to the ocean on the airport side. Chief Olo who owned the apartments saw us off at the airport when we returned to Texas. I LOVED our time there and completely adored the Samoan people. I love watching your shows. It brings back so may good memories. Like following behind a truck load of happy samoans playing their ukulele, singing, laughing and waving. Their smiles lit up my world. Never before had I ever seen such genuine smiles. Anyway hope they can give you an extension on the dock. Try not to worry too much, it will all work out in the end with God's good grace

It is all about the dinghy and finding a place to park your car and shower. Been there done that. This is going to be very difficult psychologically because you guys are basically moving into a quasi homeless type lifestyle. If your boat aint right and you guys are not all geared out I would advise that you get an apartment and really work on the refit on the boat. But I dont know the finances. But I'll say it again, guys that do this full time (living off the hook) have really nice dinghys because that is where its at out there. If it were me I would throw some serious cash at the small boat game first. Don't mess around, throw at least $5,000 towards the small boat. I feel for ya and will keep you guys in prayer.

Try and anchor close to Satala village by the cemetery. Still deep enough and close to the road to park your truck. I cant see why you still cant moor to pier when no work is done after hours. I work on the water for a living. Any motor that you have is a good one but from my experience and we drive skifs like we stole them, mercury motors are alright but the throttle linkage breaks all the time and they are under powered and have much lower speed(4 stroke or 2 stroke). Yamaha motors specifically 2 stroke have been the absolute best in my experience, best snap, most power and fastest top end speed. I once lost one off the back of a skiff, it spent 8 hours under the sea and we recovered it removed the spark plugs and pull started it and sprayed WD40 (water displacer 40) in where the spark plugs were and later that day it was up and running again.

Pago Pago Harbor is one of the deepest harbours in the world. There were 2 big fish cannery factories on the opposite side of where AmSamFam sail boat. Accumulated waste and chemicals being dumped over the years made it worse.

No .. your not ready. LMAO! But the weather is calming and you have time to get it figured out. Boat life is all about getting through one crises at a time. Chaos management is the life of a sailor! Welcome to the whirlwind of crash crises life on the water. lol

Come on. This is getting ridiculous. I was born in the covenant (got my family out 5 years ago) so I totally understand blindly following your family’s priesthood holder. You think this is some great adventure for your children. It’s not. Children need and crave stability. You’re raising them in chaos. Do all this when it’s just the two of you someday. You seem like a great mother. Your divine moral obligation is to protect your children at all costs. Your husband is going through some kind of crisis. And your blind obedience to him is going to have long term consequences for your children. Take your babies and run!! I’m sure your family will support you! Please please take care of yourself.

Hi Jen, thank you for your concern. I can see that your comment is coming from a place of love, but it’s clearly being colored by your own past experiences too.
I (Melinda) make my own choices. I blindly follow no one. Nate and I discuss big decisions together and we each share our opinions equally.
To be honest, I dream of becoming nomadic and taking our kids all over the world, to experience all that this Earth and the people on it have to offer. That’s not realistic at this time and I’m not sure that it’s the right choice while our kids are this age. If anything, Nate helps keep me grounded. I get frustrated when people assume this poor, little housewife is a slave to her big, strong husband’s will.
Living on a sailboat is not going to ruin our kids. We provide them with a loving, yet adventurous life and we believe they will be strong, healthy, happy people because of their experiences.
Again, I’m choosing to see your comment as an offer for help, but maybe next time don’t jump to such outrageous conclusions.
And yes, my family would love and support me no matter what. Which is clear by the way they have always supported me no matter what crazy adventure I’m embarking upon.
Thank you for watching our videos and for trying to help. I hope that you’re happier and you’re in a healthier place than you were before. Take care 💗

Why are you subjecting your kids to this? I get that Nate is an economist as a living, but this is ridiculous.

Kids who have parents like Nate and his wife grow up to be resourceful, resilient and very appreciative of their family and living experiences.
I don't know why you were annoyed if this is not affecting your life.
      Whataboutism?
