- You may be wondering what we're doing showing "the right way" to make a Samoan umu. If you've been watching our videos for awhile, you'll know we tried this before and failed miserably. This time we've asked some local Samoans to show us the right way to make a Samoan umu.
And guess what happened...
It was an absolute and complete SUCCESS!
We learned some big lessons about what we did wrong last time and now we're looking forward to trying it again, to prove to ourselves that we can.
HInt: It takes lots of rocks... I mean LOTS and LOTS of rocks!
So, come along with us as we learn how to successfully make a Samoan umu and let us know what we should try cooking in our next one.

As a teenager in the 80s, visited Am Samoa from Hawaii. Our chores was to help with umu. Bad idea, i was trying to help but I was only getting in there way. Best thing to do is watch and learn. They are quick and fast.
Yep, that’s what we figured out too. At first, we felt guilty that they were doing all the work, but they really preferred it that way 😊
I miss doing umu especially every Sunday for tooga’i feast with my family back home 😞 us samoans we put God first and i appreciated you guys for loving the island and be part of the culture🥰❤️ amazing people 💯
Who need snow when you have that feast! I find it amazing every time I watch a video or read something how you bring a new piece of culture, history, nature and life about American Samoa. The guys at the culture center seemed to have this all down, unless those were a private family. It was most awesome.
Thanks. Some of the people actually work at the cultural center, but they brought the whole family along to help us out 😃

Ya know, it's kinda funny... I only spent two years of my life there, a lifetime ago now, and more than any of the many places I have lived before and since, I only ever feel genuine homesickness for Samoa. I love how much you guys embrace the culture and everything. All I can say about last years umu was Melinda’s palusami. It was properly wrapped and it looked as good as this one. When the wraps (kauvela) were taken off the umu, I felt so nostalgic with the steam and I could smell the food that was prepared. Everything looked so tasty. Aside from the palusami which is always the best to have…I miss the miki (coconut milk w onions) Thank you again for another great video. Have a Merry Christmas AmSamFam🤎

@@AmSamFam We live in Riverside, Ca. Some of the uncles last year thought it’ll be a good idea to make a Umu since we live far out in dry farmland. It’s Dec everything is wet and cold. Wasn’t a good idea. The smoke alarm all the first responders to check it out. Luckily we didn’t get a citation but we had a good amount of people for a feast. Especially the fire department guys 🤣😂😂

I totally understand! In Anchorage Alaska we used to do umu when we have special celebration within our family, and we have to get a permit from MOA here locally to allow us to make a umu, in that case fire department will be aware of it! Great video👍 and palusami always taste better with just the coconut natural taste!(real pe’epe’e)…

Just a suggestion, and may be a different way, but the wood that is used in the video are treated lumber. Treated with different kinds of chemicals that can be absorbed in the food being cooked in the umu. Thats why your eyes were tearing up because of the chemicals. Natural firewood from local trees can used instead of treated lumber. Thats just my two cents...GREAT VIDEO!!!

I'd be slamming me some beers too, probably to tired to do anything like helping with the dishes. I wouldn't feel too bad. These Samoans have been doing this since they were born. It's their island. That heavy set man with the hat looked military to me. I bet he served in the Army or National Guard there. You should ask him next time for me.
