  • Wondering where to go for fresh and local food while in AMERICAN SAMOA?
This week we're taking you with us to check out the FAGATOGO MARKET.
We ended up going three times while making this video, to show you the experiences of going on different days and at different times.
Saturday morning is actually rather quiet, which surprised us. The first Friday of every month is usually very busy, with food venders and entertainment, but ever since the COVID-19 restrictions, it's been a quieter affair, but still with some delicious food venders. It turns out that Friday mornings are the time to come if you're looking for fresh produce and sea food, with the Fagatogo Fish Market open only on Friday mornings.
Let us know if you've been to the MARKET and what your experience was like.
And as always, THANK-YOU so much for being here, watching our videos and supporting our adventures.

They are. We’ve encouraged them to be open to trying new things from the beginning. Food is such an easy way to experience different cultures and ways of life. Plus, it helps that we are willing to try these new things too. It’s just always been a thing we do as a family.

I can't believe how much the market has changed . My mom used to run a little breakfast shop out there before the market underwent renovations. As another person commented, the market was really packed Friday nights into Saturday mornings and all day Saturday. Wow, thank you for sharing this wonderful stroll down memory lane. Love your videos especially when your children are along side living the experiences with you! I was fortunate enough to grow up in Europe before returning to American Samoa and I loved every minute of it, I am sure your children will carry these experiences with them and cherish them always! Please keep the videos coming! Take care and Soifua.

OMG ... your daughter is hilarious with her taro. I'm glad to see the kids have adapted well with island living. I just love watching your videos. Keep them coming. Alofa atu!! BTW: thank you for overlooking the old man's over priced niu. Perhaps you perceived that he needed the money more and therefore supported his business. Thank you.

Fagatogo maketi, , was a happining place back in the day (70s 80’s) . Friday afternoon with high schoolers (Fa’asao, Marist, Samoana, eastside kids and even some west side kids would risk trouble with their families just to aiga bus themselves back home), would all hung out at the market and IceWich, (our McDonald before McDonald discover American Samoa). Saturday was the busiest before noontime with the locals. Only take I can about say about my last visit(10yrs ago) was Panineke at the market still, otherwise, different era(time). 😎🏝

Haha, fun memories!! I wonder if there’s still somewhere like that where all the high schoolers hang out. Luckily, we haven’t reached that stage with our kids yet 😄

I was working on AS last fall. the covid restrictions really impacted life. The fish market was one of my favorites, one of the few locales that were open. the 10-14 day quarantine was the main reason I did not stay. My family could not visit and I could not travel off island. Maweea la aso.

There must be tons of coconut and papaya that you could forage or trade your neighbors for. Is there? Do you share fish and foraged greens with your neighbors? Do you have a garden? Those little girls sure liked getting out.

We do actually have coconuts in our back yard, but sometimes when you’re out and there’s a fresh, husked coconut it worth the splurge 😊 We live right on the ocean, which makes it difficult to grow much, but there are lots of little produce stands all over the island, where you can get fresh fruits and veggies. Plus, we like to support these local farmers when we can.

Must check out the $1 bag of Samoan pancakes (panikeke) at the market & the $1 bags of German buns at bakery on the right before the turn into the hospital on your way from the market heading towards the westside.
