I can say the same thing about my v50. Good to know you have been happy with Subaru, I´ll think about it. As I like to feel safely and drive solid, reliable car.
@@denztingz Outback is reliable but 2.5i engine has wrong kind of headgasket installed from factory that causes over exaggerated headgasket issues. 3.0 and 2.0r are reliable tho 2.0R is only availble in Legacy. All manufacturers ruined their cars feel and connectedness with assits and electeonic pwoersteering, Subaru gave uo on europe and started making more and more boring vehicles for US specificly instead. Woth exception of BRZ perhaps but that car still has its issues.
As for repairing it even body wise it should be really easy given that weaker legacies are incredibly common, especially cheap to buy diesels with early shot engines. I'm guessing you're not in the UK, so you don't know the show or the driver, which is the very capable Vicki Butler-Henderson by the way. I had a Volvo v50 but now i have a legacy...both good cars,...someway i found the volvo more like a car to rely on. But the legacy (2009) is more comfort and fun.
i bought my 02 Legacy GT 5MT because i wanted a fun car to drive first and foremost, but couldn't justify spending so much back then without the practicality of a big wagon. personally i think in terms of 4wd handling the legacy is a great alternative to an upper class german like the S4 if you're on a budget. this video helps prove the point you don't need a "sports car" to enjoy a car's power and handling.
Gen one from 1995-2003 was about the size of V50, new V40 was so small storage wise it wasnt even considered a wagon anymore, it was a hatchback in their lineup at this point. They increased the wheelbase while rear end got shorter and cutdown and car overall is shorter. It also didnt exist at the time. Once V40 of the 90s ended production in 2003-4 it was replaced by V50 until that was replaced by V40 in 2012 and more directly by V60 that was more of an actual wagon.
@chickenman5755 not really, Subaru owners in Sweden are among the most satisfied owners since the Subaru range isnt just STI WRC replicas, they are reliable and well equiped cars for a good price. 4wd is good to since we have snow during winter and it can also be very dull during the spring and autumn.
Its not about the horsepower. Its obvious that with a turbo you can crank it up as much as you like with tuning. Problem is that it will always feel uninspired and just sound good and if tuned so much torque steer like crazy and slam you in the seat wirh torque. To make it handle more sportily you will have to give up.all the comfort with some aggressive coil over kit and stiff sway bars and at that point its useless as a daily as noone will want to drive with you in it for any serious trips. Subaru mixes perfection of sportiness and comfort with practicality. And it looks really good for a wagon.
The Volvo B5254T3/B5254T4 engine (also known as the T5) actually is detuned by Volvo themselves. @chickenman5755 Thank you a lot for answering my question :) I went to Volvo dealership in my country and too bad they dont get the V50 I might go for the V70 at the end :)
I am definitely a Volvo man but the V70's and V50's suspension is a total let down, costs got cut there i believe. Would it not have been a better race with a V70 T5 or R?
now i wonder what one went through the fuel the fastest, and whats more there different ideas one is a try to be rally car but with the practicality of a estate and the other is a car you'd take your family in, safely and comfy, and to be fair the Volvo has many extras that make the car a more "everyday" car
Turbo 2.5 will go through fuel much faster especially if it would be tuned as many Volvo fanboys tout in the old commemts. Volvo's 5 cylinder can sound nice but its just catatonicly boring and lame in every other driving characteristic and in ways that are not possible to.mitigate without ruining the car as a daily outright
Legacy is very practical, its not really as desperately rally like like Impreza WRX STi is, its very comfy and safe and is more luxury oriented. Subaru based newer generatins of impreza and wrx on it to address all complains with how loud and tin canny old buy eye Impreza and foresters were. Leggy very much in the sweetspot where its comfrotable, reliable and fun without sacrificing anything. For a car enthusiast its one of the best choices for a family car. And because or rich aftermarket there ways to improve it still and make it more sporty.
and don't forget as VBH points out the Volvo suffers from a lot of understeer the Subaru AWD system reacts at high speed to bias more power to the rear wheels making cornering more neutral ( no I dont have one I have two Legacy Outbacks )
@fesen2 Over in here in Canada, most people buy Subaru for performance, there great rally cars :) I currently own a 2009 Volvo V50 and i'm very happy of it. When i need to put the back seats down, it's actually flat and i can fit alot more stuff into the Volvo than the Subaru. Also the gas milage is great. I can get about 700km on a single tank.
It's hilarious how many people are hating on this video. Just grow up. As for that Subaru! That's my dream car. I have the 5 speed auto version of it and it's fantastic to drive!! I never push it as hard as her when I'm on the road but at legal speeds it flys around every corner. Not only that but it's extremely comfortable, well equipped and very practical. I wonder how much slower the auto would be around that track? Mines still a spec B with Bilstein shocks and alloy suspension components but automatic.
David F What do you consider to be comfortable then? It was voted New Zealand Executive car of the year and Japanese Car of the year when it was first made.
I have driven both, The Volvo does NOT feel big... what the fuck VBH? Everyone knew the Scooby would be faster around the track, but I like the Volvo more... We all know VBH is a Scooby fan girl anyways.
Go Subaru.... The boxer engine and road gripping symetrical awd dusts any competitor. The boxer engine gives it a lower center of gravity and the awd is a 50/50 split!!!!! GO SUBARU!!!!!!!
@hasan218 Personally, I love it. I currently had it for almost two years i have experienced no problems with it. It has tons of space when you put the seats down. It a great city car yet it handles great on gravel roads. i guess my only complaint with it is that its low to ground, so when your driving over snow the bottom scrapes along the snow. Overall it a great car and I recommend ti anyone who is considering buying one. =)
I usually hear that the brand Volvo is bad aswell as their engines. Could you clarify this? I like the design of Volvo but i really don't know what to do because all i hear is 'don't buy it'.
'Why buy a family car?' Because one might have a family, but when the fam isnt in the car, we sttill want to have a performance vehicle. The lgt wagon also weighs less then the lgt limited. zero to 60 in 5 secons aint bad either
Well if you buy the sport version you may and probably will expect it to feel and handle a bit more than a dull family wagon. Tried both, own the Subaru and will own for a long time. Subaru - Volvo: 6-0.
@@welkekutnaamdanwel Ugly? Leggy IV is one of most beautiful wagons ever made...what is up with you hating on it? It's fine if you dont preffer japanese cars but this is uncalled for. Leggy aint cheap, and thanks to not trying to ape Audi its not a heavy ass chunk of metal that hates being forced to corner. It's very nice balance between big engine, wagon body style and great handling and its still lightweight and not as front heavy as S4 would be. Far more reliable too. Only con is that it's a bit thirsty like most 6 cylinder cars.
@ijsHD i dont know if the new ones are good nut we had a v70 and it had done 700.000 km and then the front suspension began to break down. So after 700.000 km. And after 500.000 the rurbo needes to ne replaced. So in my opinion volvo,s are verry relieble cars! Sorry for bad english
As briillianr as the Volvo in the same situation. Subaru is one of the most reliable cars in the world. Beats Volvo. I have tested myself. Volvo I have no more, Subie stays.
still think it's valid; the Legacy isn't exactly a track car either, she just said that it had more performance-oriented suspension and body-control, which is a fair point of comparison.
It's a valid point, but it's the only point she makes about the two cars. And it's a point that would not be important to most of the potential buyers of these cars. Also, she obviously doesn't understand 'Traction Control', which she says can't be turned off. True, Traction Control cannot be turned off, but the part of the DSTC she should be referring to is Active Yaw Control and Roll Stability Control, which does intervene to make this Volvo less sporty, but more safe--and can't be turned off.
@chickenman5755 ofc Subarus are made from Rally cars and Volvo is all about safety and comfort, but the Subarus are getting more comfie and Volvo specially with V8 in S80 and the new S/V60 with the more sporty chassi they are trying because Sweds are getting more in to Audis so Volvo really have to play the cards right els we will give up on them here in the future.
euro's are allways calling AWD 4WD and they say it properly in the bigining. and i agree huge diferance, you don't want to go faster then 40mph in 4WD and you can turn it on and off
If it's all about a fast car, why not all drive Caterhams? Because different people have different needs. Why not have a car for the dog and kids, but can also hoon it when you want??
***** if 2,5 second are going to make any difference for you... what about confort? what about space? I like the Subaru too aswell, but this video didn't help me much
Love the moaners on here. It's just a bit of fun comparing two souped-up wardrobe shifters that excuse their over-inflated price tags by pretending to be fast & sporty, and it turns out that the Subaru was less shit than the Volvo round a track. Get over it.
Shes sooo wrong about the V50. I have no idea wtf shes on about and im kind of disappointed because usually 5th gear has a less opinionated review. Sure the turbo kicks in at 1500rpm and has almost full Tq at 2000 but the mid range pull in 3rd gear is probably the best Ive felt. you can pretty much do 30-80 faster than 0-60.. which in my opinion is way better considering I dont like looking like a douche launching at a green light. Also the volvo is not pretending to be anything. It might be considered their sport model but that just means it gets the body kit, sport steering wheel, rims and tires.. it never tried to be a sport wagon. I know this for a fact because volvo WAS making a sports wagon when this came out which was the V70R AWD. It's an incredibly comfortable car and very fun to drive as well. Its also surprisingly quick.
let them crash in to etch other and see who got the biggest chance of surviving xD, Volvo is in to safety, as the Subaru is more in to rally, so don't you think it's a surprise that the Subaru won? but personally i like a softer and more comfortable car on longer road-trips, then a sporty one.
simon gaac all cars are in to safety, but some do it better then others, Volvo also has racing and rally history, not that they where amazing at it, but it was competing. as the legacy is the better car when it comes to being sporty. they both got strong sides.
ståle starheim simon gaac Volvo has a very good racing history... they were some of the first rally cars around and also some of the fastest. In almost every race Volvo finishes high up or first in their class.. this heritage is passed on to their modern cars such as the S60 super V8 for GT racing in Australia. But hey, just because no one knows the name doesn't mean theyre not good. I bet you throw Lancia stratos into a conversation and most people wont know what the hell you're talking about and yet probably one of the best rally cars of its time. But yes, Volvo does safety well. I prefer a comfortable car that is safe and reliable that ALSO goes fast. No way would I want a fast car that ISNT safe. Whats the point in that lol.. but as for the video, V50 looks better and all it needs is some lowering springs as Volvo likes to make their AWD cars functional, why have AWD on a lowered car if its just gona get stuck in the snow?
0:35 "The T5 is Volvo's smallest estate." No, the V50 is, the T5 is the name of Volvo's 5 cylinder engines with high pressure turbos. This is the reason why I prefer watching Top Gear.
The driver clearly steers like hes trying to upset the traction control, what can you say.. Traction control born drivers.. My first car was non-abs and no controls or anything, my current car has only abs. If you think about what you do and try to feel your car every single moment you drive, you will learn to react exactly the right way and right away when a sudden scenario happens :) The bad thing is that you need to almost crash to learn the boundaries though..
haha 04? or 04 and a half, that was the year that volvo changed their s40 body, halfway through the year. My mom rolls around in the 04.5 s40 T5, which is an awesome car, a real fun car to drive, I roll in a 2000 volvo s80 t6(6 cylnder twin turbo) and my lovely girlfriend is quite enjoying her first car, a 2009 volvo c30 T5 with all the goodies, she loves it, I love it, and I will always love volvos. They're so innovative, subarus arent bad cars, they're actually pretty sick, but ugly interiors
Its funny seeing all the Volvo fanboys hating on Leggy and praising Volvo and making excuses for it....its a goddamn FWD car faking to be AWD(haldex doesnt even toggle until it thinks you're slipping on snow so its FWD all the time, understeer for days)
I can't believe this video is gonna be SIXTEEN YEARS OLD this December!
still prefer the V50
despite all evidence you still prefer a boring, race/rally not car?
The Volvo's performance numbers give him plenty of time to fondle the thicker leather and appreciate the finer fake wood trim.
Daily use Volvo will be much nicer👍 better place to be in.

I wonder how much slower the auto would be around that track? Mines still a spec B with Bilstein shocks and alloy suspension components but automatic.
Comfortable and Subaru are two completely different stories
David F
What do you consider to be comfortable then? It was voted New Zealand Executive car of the year and Japanese Car of the year when it was first made.
Volvo.
I have driven both, The Volvo does NOT feel big... what the fuck VBH? Everyone knew the Scooby would be faster around the track, but I like the Volvo more... We all know VBH is a Scooby fan girl anyways.
was this filmed in Ireland? i thought i spotted an irish flag.
quaifes on the volvo and a polestar map would create a monster
It's frustrating that they didn't put the Turbo Legacy against the Volvo, seems that the comparison would have made more sense.
Go Subaru.... The boxer engine and road gripping symetrical awd dusts any competitor. The boxer engine gives it a lower center of gravity and the awd is a 50/50 split!!!!! GO SUBARU!!!!!!!
@hasan218 Personally, I love it.
Outback version is the best one in my opinion. It has more ground clearance and most of the handling still there.
where my v50 owners at? 🙌🏽
We owe a Volvo V50, and its a really good car.
Its fast, not to expensive, spacious, and reliable too.
if your looking for a family car, buy a volvo.
@AntiMashu I wouldn't know, 2 years, not one repair!!
I usually hear that the brand Volvo is bad aswell as their engines. Could you clarify this? I like the design of Volvo but i really don't know what to do because all i hear is 'don't buy it'.
Well said mate i agree, they always compare the lower powered volvo's, i should of been the v70-r
Actually, she said it was physically quite small but felt big to drive - the exact opposite of what it should be like.
That's what she said. 😂
'Why buy a family car?' Because one might have a family, but when the fam isnt in the car, we sttill want to have a performance vehicle. The lgt wagon also weighs less then the lgt limited. zero to 60 in 5 secons aint bad either
'the volvo canters round in 57.63" @ 1.44
what? since when were there more than 60 seconds in a minute?
Not 57.63 minutes obviously :)
Was this video recorded with Abraham Lincoln's camera?
am I the only one who thinks that how a family estate goes around a track is irrelevant?
nope. It's still cool to see though.
Not when its the top version
00’s, when people put anything on track
Awm Joeyjoejoe
Then why did you watch it?
Well if you buy the sport version you may and probably will expect it to feel and handle a bit more than a dull family wagon. Tried both, own the Subaru and will own for a long time. Subaru - Volvo: 6-0.
damn strait
Obviously that shows how good the Subaru really is, engeneering and all...
There was no contest to begin with with that volvo.
To bad they look cheap and ugly to my taste.. But maybe that 's twelve years ago😁
SHE SEEMS ALWAYS BEING DOPED
Same price as Scooby estate. People in this market would look at both..What's the problem?
cool video editing though, like a videogame ghost image.
The V50 is a fucking machine.
It's a bugger the V60 hadn't been in production for this video, I feel that would have evened the odds...
Is this mechanical TV? 144p wow
How brilliant is the outback when you have to leave it for repairs?
As briillianr as the Volvo in the same situation. Subaru is one of the most reliable cars in the world. Beats Volvo. I have tested myself. Volvo I have no more, Subie stays.
@KON4444 HELL YEA!!!
still think it's valid; the Legacy isn't exactly a track car either, she just said that it had more performance-oriented suspension and body-control, which is a fair point of comparison.
they should take also the legacy turbo version
is the v50 sport car? it's not, in the volvo mark "R" means sport, mark "T" means turbo, this is just engine :)
@chickenman5755 ofc Subarus are made from Rally cars and Volvo is all about safety and comfort, but the Subarus are getting more comfie and Volvo specially with V8 in S80 and the new S/V60 with the more sporty chassi they are trying because Sweds are getting more in to Audis so Volvo really have to play the cards right els we will give up on them here in the future.
that woman is an excellent driver
I want to see a porsche vs a fiat panda....
She was on Top Gear for years...
euro's are allways calling AWD 4WD and they say it properly in the bigining. and i agree huge diferance, you don't want to go faster then 40mph in 4WD and you can turn it on and off
How is a speed test good for rating an estate car? If I want a fast car I buy an impreza not a legacy.
If it's all about a fast car, why not all drive Caterhams? Because different people have different needs. Why not have a car for the dog and kids, but can also hoon it when you want??
Dan lee
Good man. 3.0 H6 i hope!
before the STI was Legacy that started winning races for Subaru, in other words only an Impreza STI is faster than a Legacy R.
***** if 2,5 second are going to make any difference for you...
what about confort? what about space? I like the Subaru too aswell, but this video didn't help me much
thatunknownguy Legacy is more comfortable and has more space than this Volvo :).
You didn't think the car made it in more 57 minutes dd you?
Bro use the R design version the suspension is stiff and good for corner's
i wouldn't think on go for a quicky with this blondie
Its also surprisingly quick.
let them crash in to etch other and see who got the biggest chance of surviving xD, Volvo is in to safety, as the Subaru is more in to rally, so don't you think it's a surprise that the Subaru won?
but personally i like a softer and more comfortable car on longer road-trips, then a sporty one.
ståle starheim ERM Subaru is also into safety
simon gaac all cars are in to safety, but some do it better then others, Volvo also has racing and rally history, not that they where amazing at it, but it was competing. as the legacy is the better car when it comes to being sporty. they both got strong sides.
ståle starheim simon gaac Volvo has a very good racing history... they were some of the first rally cars around and also some of the fastest.
Interesting turbo legacy without a bonnet scoop...
The driver clearly steers like hes trying to upset the traction control, what can you say.. Traction control born drivers..
My first car was non-abs and no controls or anything, my current car has only abs. If you think about what you do and try to feel your car every single moment you drive, you will learn to react exactly the right way and right away when a sudden scenario happens :)
The bad thing is that you need to almost crash to learn the boundaries though..
@damagnan So?
haha 04? or 04 and a half, that was the year that volvo changed their s40 body, halfway through the year.
@TheVtieg6 That would be straight guys only actually
Subaru for life
Both are great cars but the Legacy got the edge it's a better all round car
I have a Legacy and I have driven volvos..no contest SUBARU everytime!!
Its funny seeing all the Volvo fanboys hating on Leggy and praising Volvo and making excuses for it....its a goddamn FWD car faking to be AWD(haldex doesnt even toggle until it thinks you're slipping on snow so its FWD all the time, understeer for days)
