    Red Bull have built themselves a rocket ship. They have the fastest car out there but the thing that has really stood out this year is their straight-line speed. It meant that Max was able to BLAST past everyone on the way to winning his last 3 races. But where does this great straight-line speed come from?
    Let me explain.
    Max Verstappen and Red Bull keep on winning. Since the F1 summer break, this combination has won all three events in Belgium, Holland and Italy. They have won in different ways but there is a consistent factor in these varied wins - their straight-line speed.
    In short, this speed means they are able to defend and overtake more easily than others. This is backed up by the data as the Red Bull was able to average 2kph more than Ferrari and 5kph more than Mercedes through the speed trap without DRS throughout the Dutch GP.
    With DRS activated - the delta actually got bigger, particularly over the Mercedes, which now became 10kph slower. And this is when both have DRS open. In a situation when the Red Bull is attacking, they can have over 20kphs advantage, which in F1 terms, is a no contest.
    In contrast, during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, Red Bull ran a higher downforce configuration of rear wing and this helped them manage their tyre wear in the race, while not compromising their straight-line speed to defend against Leclerc’s advances in the final stint.

    Any team which has the trifecta wins.
    Good team (strategy +pit +development), dominant and risk taking drivers who can push the wheels to its limit, a dominant and reliable car.
    The most dominant spells in F1 have the same thing going on :
    Hamilton + Merc
    Schumacher + Ferrari
    Vettel + RB
    And the one in making :
    Max + Redbull.
    F1 races aren't won just by drivers. Drivers however are the 2nd most important link. The are the ones who save the day when the third most important link fails. The bad days when you car spins out, when you have to start from back / pit, when the pit crew fails you, when the strategy doesn't sit, when it's raining. On that day you see the drivers doing the job.
    Vettel drove like a beast in his prime. Charging from back, had severe reliability issues in the car and almost lost to Alonso, but bounced back and charged for the championship.
    Hamilton was absolute beast in his time with mercs.
    And Verstappen is right now with Redbull.
    They all seem unstoppable in their prime. It was never just about the talent or just about the car or just about driver +car. All three had to be good Team+Car+Driver for them to actually win championship.
    Anywone saying Hamilton won because of car or Vettel won because of car. Would have said the same thing for Senna or Schumacher is they had lived during their times.
    Anyone questioning the greatness of the drivers who stacked championships after championships... Truly don't understand the nuance of F1. They are just pathetic Fanbois. Nothing else.

    Regarding engine speeds: the different teams choose to deploy power in different ways. The Ferrari engine deploys its power during corner exits and when entering long straights at the cost of clipping at the end of straights, which is where RB is superior. The Mercedes is simply compromised by too much drag compared to both teams, so it’s difficult to judge their engine’s true performance. RB has also probably lost a lot of weight throughout the season too (maybe that budget cap violation helped?)

    so ironic that people expected RB to be absolute rockets at Monza, when in fact they put on huge rear wings. I guess their package was already so efficient, it didn't matter. In qualifying, DRS negate that extra wing. Only areas they suffer is curve de grande and the back straight, but then they gain laptime everywhere else. Most importantly in race their car is much more kind to its tires and their downforce allows them to follow other cars into corners and slip stream past easily.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus Pƙed rokem +1

      The point about DRS is interesting because most teams at Monza run so little rear wing that the DRS doesn't do much. Red Bull figured out how to run more wing, relying on DRS to work them and come out ahead in the in end. It's just such a wonderfully balanced car (balanced in terms of how all the parts of it work together). Normally I'd be disappointed that one team and driver was running away with what looked like a competitive championship early in the year, but with the way Red Bull has so quickly mastered the massive regulation changes I'm more impressed than mad. Sometimes instead of complaining about not getting a championship fight, you just gotta acknowledge how much better one team is doing.

The Red Bull is a fine looking car but I'd like to see them change up the livery a bit next year because it's been more or less the same for years. Back when I first became a racing fan (of Indycar) when I was a kid in the early 90s Mario and Michael Andretti ran a largely white livery but with enough other colors on the car to keep it interesting. I guess I've always had a soft spot for liveries like that (and the Red Bull Honda tribute) for that reason.

      Can someone explain

    • @coltonniese1702
      @coltonniese1702 Pƙed rokem +2

      @@cristi_mx Basically, the technical directed implemented at Belgium this year imposed stricter floor deflection tests and plank mounting restrictions. It is believed that Ferrari and Red Bull found a way to mount the plank to allow it to press into the bottom of the chassis to reduce the effect of bumps or bottoming-out on the circuits. The floor deflection can be used to touch the edge of the floors to the ground to mechanically seal the underfloor tunnels to increase the downforce produced by the floor. You can see this particularly in effect with the Mercedes cars as they are often dragging the floor edges on the circuit.
      Next year the floor edges will be raised 15mm in reference to the plank, which is supposed to be the bottommost part of the car. This height change combined with the stricter floor deflection limitations mean that teams that use the floor edges wo mechanically seal the tunnels will not be able to do so. Red Bull (as explained in the video) uses air vortices to "seal" the floor. They will have experience in this theory of aero design and implementation from this year. As such, many other teams may have to adopted this method to seal the floors per the new regulations and will be on the back foot. I think that this may be an advantage for Red Bull next year for these reasons.

      Ferrari has their car setup for quali and RB for race. So for example in monza Ferrari with lesser downforce should allow them to be faster, but the downside is more sliding which lead to higher tyre deg. This isn't much of a problem for quali because you only need to run for 1 hotlap. This might lead to them being unable to push too hard during race otherwise their tyres will fall off quickly. Also quali is low fuel whereas during race you have a full tank, which is also a consideration when setting up the car.

    The main benefit of sealing the floor arodinamically allowing runs at higher heights is that now you have 2 distinct heights of operation between corner speeds and top speeds. Then, one can set the suspension to heave down when approaching top speeds, stalling the diffuser and preventing massive induced drag generation. The tricky part is to make it porpoising-free. Vettel has described a very percepted "sitting" movement from the rear of those RB18s on straights. When Max lost some bits of channeling vanes under the floor in Silverstone, the car became a Haas.

When DRS is not activated, the Redbull is 8kph slower than Ferrari. No trickery at all. What the video doesn't mention is that by having enough downforce and corner grip, Max is able to follow the car ahead more easily, and while slipstreaming, drag isn't a problem, and Max can also brake later thanks to the extra downforce. The car is also kinder on its tires and faster overall in the race.

      @sspacegghost Pƙed rokem

      @@DonLee1980 yes i watched the video mr nasty. they are getting a gain in the last 50m of straights. The stalling might not be the rear wing smarty pants - the floor might be doing the stalling at high speeds. Also the honda engine could have a trick to engage some of the KERS giving them the affect of running a higher gearing on monza like circuits. The video highlighted what it could be. The aero stalling is option one. But the toro rosso was closing at monza in the last 50m also on Danni Ricc so maybe the Honda engine monza mode has a trick. Ferrari was faster in the corners so Max wasnt following more easily like you said, ferrari had that advantage. this is an aero, top end mystery - and the angle on that wing is totally counter intuitive for monza and the graph gain is very very weird. ive never seen a high downforce car gain in the last 50m. the fact theres no graph separation both pre and post DRS means there is more to this than meets the eye. its all in the last 50m and thats stall or engine trickery at top end.

      @footballcoreano you do not know F1 history amateur boy lol. Not interested in verstappen at all. Only Honda engineering and Red Bull strength. Engineering is an art that is not understood by mere plebeians. Good luck Ferrari and Hamilton. Both bring good challenge to F1z 👍

      Sorry for bad English too. Of course I do not hate Ferrari or Mercedes! My wife wants Purosangue and I want AMG GT so maybe I’m a Ferrari and Mercedes fanboy too! 😂

    Its Max who makes this car work. Perez is so far away from him and even the ferraris at some tracks. So for me the special element of the red bull racing, red bull power trains, red bull energy drinks....is Max Verstapen

      It both him and the car. At the start of the year perez was close to max because the car suited his style. Now that the car is more suited to max's likings, perez can't keep up.
      The same was for lewis and bottas. Was bottas really that much slower than lewis? No, the car widened the gap
      Or for kimi and alonso in 2014, or kimi and vettel in 2017 (in 2018 the car suited kimi better than the previous year, in fact he finished 3rd and was a lot closer to vettel than in 2017)
