So Max has been robbed 38 points in three races, with two DNFs due to engine issues. And it’s not just max, in Bahrain Checo had an engine-induced Sbinala and Gasly’s car also got pretty toasty.
So are all of these issues linked? Or is the Australia DNF a new issue? 2022 Australian Grand Prix
Let’s get into it.

First then, the issue in Bahrain was said to be a Fuel Lock, that was brought on by the late Safety car.
Now, if you’ve worked on older cars you will know why this happens. It’s essentially where vapour (either fuel vapour or air) get trapped in the fuel system. And very often this can completely block the fuel lines - which caused Max and Checo’s engines to stop during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
We expect to be down to the E10 fuel in these new cars - rather than a leaky pipe which typically what causes the same issue on older cars.
And the E10 fuel really seems to be creating some issues for Red Bull powertrains. But really, it should be something they could fix pretty quickly - and when Max won in Saudi - we thought they had.

It's definitely an improvement but his mic quality is still bad.
I like crisps.
Agreed!
If it was the exact same problem from the last time I would be worried. If it’s slightly different then once they eliminate issues one by one they can press on. Nothing is for certain in f1 .Ferrari can crash like every one else and give back points.

E85 has been used in things like Pikes Peak Hill climb cars I believe. So I have a hard time imagining an F1 team missed the memo on Ethanol not playing nice with seals/o-rings.
it's only 10% they're using, not full e85 mix.
100%. I highly doubt E10 is the caused of this. if it is yes, then it is their ignorance that cause this, not the fuel itself.
E 10 has been in our cars for years
I've converted cars to e85 eith put ever having a problem. Thinking these guy are running into the 10 percent of corn in the tanks is eating seals.dont believe it.
@@ed3192 right. That's my point. Even E10 can damage orings. And I'd be surprised if they DIDN'T know that Ethanol damages things. That would be a very amateur mistake I don't see a top tier F1 team making.
@@shadow7037932 I mean it's quite known that you must be able to provide a 1Litre fuel sample at the end of a session yet sometimes teams/drivers mess up
Had this problem when ethanol first come out, it would dry and degrade the rubber seals and hoses in fuel system and cause leaks and debris that clogged the injectors.
Surely they dint run parts like that for long enough to cause that sort of issues
@@rhyswilliams4893 they could've used metal or copper lines as fuellines.. put some fittings on that.. that small hose looks like it has plastic or hard rubber compound in it as they say its flexible...
that's actually still a problem in Europe where you have premium fuel for cars that can't handle it. Pre 200....4? European cars didn't require to be compatible with E10, and E10 wasn't that common back then. Most Gas stations had no ethanol content gasoline.
They kinda screwed us over here with that because it's harder to keep the older cars that are worth keeping on the road alive. You often have to order parts from US counterparts or get a custom E10 compatible one.
@@foxman105 european here. Can confirm. Forced to buy 98 (Has a maximum of 5% ethanol. A lot of gas station's 98 has 0% ethanol) for my 1998 Citroen. It knocks below 2000rpm on regular. I'm assuming because it's running to lean on E10.
@@TotoGeenen e10 shouldn't be a huge issue for these f1 power units, engineers should have been able to plan for this. Doubt the fuel itself is the problem
Red bulls pissing away a constructor/driver championships down the drain at this rate. Would be crazy to see checo be the red bull fighting this year
That would be great if checo fights for the championship but only if redbull get their shit together
Mexican Tom Cruise on the job mate
It would also be awesome to see Checo doing the fighting.
If Bahrain was one or two laps less, Perez would have a nice lead over Verstappen but unfortunately Verstappen is RedBull’s golden boy
I mean if max’s car keeps on shitting himself sure. Otherwise Max is clear
Redbull surely need to get on top of their reliabilty issues as fast as possìble since history shows championships arent retained with unreliabilty in whatever aspect of the sport

Exactly, Kimi Raikkonen would have been a world champion at McLaren if the reliability didn’t let him down. Same with Hamilton in 2016
They don't have a championship to retain.
@@TrickyTree84 Concise and easy to miss. Nice one, well said.
Why not Just let Ferrari Dominate, it’s about time that they were up there again …
Vapour lock is where the liquid fuel in the line is heated enough to turn to a gas and starve the engine, NOT whatever you said.
The engine was starved of fuel, technically he is right lol and up to what extent does E fuel evaporates compared to the fuel they would normally use? Do you know the characteristics of both? I have no clue.
@@ed3192 Alcohol evaporates at a far lower temp' than gasoline (a term I use very loosely for the fuel in a F1 car) and therefore greatly exacerbates the issue. That's what they (Sky) were talking aboot during the first race when they were describing the parts of the fuel system that were homologated for all the teams and their placement and that the Hon...RedBulls were experienceing it far more than others and that's why they (FIA) allowed the cars in parc ferme to make changes.
I did some work on vapour lock way way back on the MkII Cortina. I was at Ford Research, but we used the Shell facility at Thornton. We ended up using a water trap on the inner wing (fender) to cool the fuel, but if memory serves (this was a very long time ago) the problem was mostly due to a mechanical fuel pump that sucked the fuel. When we moved to electric pumps that pressurised the lines all the way from the tank to the carb (no injection back then), then vapour lock was never a problem AFAIK.
@@TrevorDennis100 most high pressure systems have a relief valve somewhere after the pump, which results in the excess unpressurised fuel returning to the tank. This keeps fuel in the pump cool and very unlikely to turn to vapour. The pressurised fuel also is less likely to turn to vapour because it’s under pressure and even if it did the pump would still function and expel the vapour, which may cause some momentary loss of power. The big issue with a vapour lock is when it gets in the pump as they are not effective at pumping gasses.
I had an oddball feeling the lack of Honda in “Honda” would cause issues.
Didn't a lot of the Honda guys stay on as RBPTs anyway
@@MeltingRubberZ28 That was also my impression of RBR taking over the division and IP.
That being said it looks terrible, however not a surprise for a new-ish venture.
Honda is still contracted to build and maintain the engines
you guys keep saying this when nothing has changed just re-badged. made in Japan. Japanese engineers etc
it is not like Honda was that great before 2021
RB needs to get it together asap - hopefully they can with Checo also being very competitive now
The bit that makes me think a fuel leak is bs was Max's comment after he pulled in.
Said he smelled weird fluid. Fuel is pretty unmistakable so my guess is hydraulics or coolant or some sort
Agreed. You can have a hydraulic leak and still have functioning equipment - not all leaks cause full loss of pressure, as is implied in the video.
@@Cataclysm1 yeah for sure. It seemed a bit presumptuous to rule it out because his gears and brakes were ok.
E10 fuel smells different from the non ethanol fuel, maybe that was the reason he said 'weird smell'.

Leclerc was doing fastest laps one after the other, after a while Verstappen tried doing a fastest lap, that didn't last long, and BANG.
Max only matched speed to keep the distance between them te same. His car became lighter with less fuel just as Charles' car. He wanted to keep the gap small enough to not give Charles a free pitstop. Thats normal racing tactic. That it became a fastest lap, that was with a very small margin. He didnt go for the fastest lap. That had no use at that point in the race

When Perez asked about Max's problem, he was told he shouldnt be worried about that, maybe meaning his car is not affected by that issue, and neither of the alpha tauri engines were problematic in Australia.
i think they didn't want perez to be bothered with someone else's problem and for him to focus on his job not max's.
Nah they didn’t want to distract Perez by worrying him during race that his car might fall to the same issue. Good call for them to not say what happened and let him focus. It’s likely both RB cars are of similar setup, but Perez seems to be managing tires/car itself much better. Verstappen has complained every single race so far about tire deg & balance where Checo seems to have managed it. Bit weird that MV’s car is drastically more unreliable, though. Makes me think they’re sacrificing more reliability in the fuel injection area for pace. Things just seem turned up a notch on Verstappen’s car but ultimately less reliable.

@@anonymousarmadillo6589 Yet they are P2 now and with upgrades, can fight
One of the best parts about changing the formula is seeing some teams get these things right and some teams get them wrong.
Nice video, but all based on speculation. I thought that Max had a hydraulic leak somewhere wich they tried to fix before the race but couldnt cause it was to hard to reach. My guess is they topped off the reservoir hoping it would be enough to make it trough the race without a terminal loss of fluid and thus pressure... but eventualy the leaking fluid found it's way to the hotter parts of the engine bay and caught fire. But like the video, this theory is purely based on speculation. Would be fun to make a hand full of these video's on probable causes of Max's retirement!? Anyhow.. let's hope they get on top of the issue sooner than later. Looking forward to Max taking the fight up to Charles!
one of the merc engeneers has already said that the new Fuel including E10 is causing them real difficulties.....and that will be for all teams the case...would also explain the lack of power of the merc works and customer teams PUs....maybe Ferrari have found some "interesting" different E10 fuel thanks to shell....:-)

E100 has been used in Brazil both for road cars (since the early 70's) and race cars (nearly for so long - check Endurance Brasil, they run anything from gasoline to E100 on 4-6 hours races). I really don't believe E10 would be an issue, unless they missed completely the point of Ethanol. DI could bring unforessen issues, but Bosch and Marelli have quite some expertise on these with E100 as well.

From my perspective this is very suspicious. Red Bull’s team has a lot of experience and I’m sure they thought of certain things ahead of time, which is why this is all very surprising to me. @@josuke6131 its still the HONDA engine till 2026.
@@gealingeman8643 yeah I know, it's just a renamed Honda engine. Honda still makes the engine but it's under the RBPT name
I would say it was a Fuel leak but not on that small external pipe. I think it is a internal leak within the multiple pumps and pipework inside the tank. The fire was a issue of stopping a very hot race car suddenly. Without air flow and how tight the bodywork is wrapped around the engine and hot turbo and exhaust I think it was part of the body work or ducting etc is what caught fire. If the fuel leak was large enough to make the engine have a dramatic loss in power and they could see it on the telemetry, There would have been fuel spraying everywhere and the whole rear of the car would have gone up in flames.
The fuel connection pictured are on/off. I've a hard time believing thay would 'seep' fuel. 100% speculation by Scarbs not fact.
Red bull powertrains caught lacking
Not powertrains fault.
I think it will be a problem that can be solved. I think the new regs are just catching them off guard and some of the new bits are giving them problems lots of other teams have already faced and solved. I’d imagine by end of the season they’ll have a good handle on their cars problems but I bet more issues will occur over the season.
Great info!
When E10 came out in the US millions of small engines were ruined over the first winter by alcohol separating out and absorbing water.
Somehow I think with all the might of Honda and RedBull, and all the engineers they poached from Mercedes, they wouldn’t have been caught out by something as simple as ethanol compatibility. If they were, they are seriously over-paid 🤣
It might be temperature related and they are burning up the high pressure pump through cavitation.
The former Merc crew arent working on the current car/engine. They're working in the new RBPT factory RB is setting up for the 2026 specs. They're nowhere near the current car 😊

I need help on why the fuel change would wreck havoc with Max's car when this fuel has been around for years.
The change could have made their fuel more corrosive. And shit can destroy some small components and degrade ruber seals and hoses. Small rubber debris resulting of the corrosion can clog the fuel injection valves and cause a lot of trouble. In Brasil the gasoline for normal cars has a lot of ethanol on it, thats why the car manufacturers has brasilian versions of their engines.
Hasn't Indycar been using pure alcohol for years with none of these problems?
