Today we're talking about the Red Bull RB19, one of the most dominant Formula 1 cars ever made. This video is a little longer than usual, but I think it turned out alright.
We dig into the history of Honda in F1 and how they transformed from a laughing stock to the best engine on the grid, the suspension that makes the RB19 so special, their tricky DRS, the budget cap violation from 2021, and more.

Checo proved that the RB19 is a one trick pony. It's not versatile, it has to be driven the way it wants. It takes no skill for Max to be fast because the car was built to suck him off

The RB19 makes those fictional super-teams you see in media like Ravenwest from the GRID games look entirely believable; unless *seismic* changes happen in red bull, I don't see things changing until the new car concept for 2026 if even then.

Nice to see a fellow Grid player here, ravenwest isn't really that quick, it just that most of our teammates are suck, like I play the open wheel series in super difficult setting, I don't have any problem to beat both ravenwest car but my teammates can't even finish 5th.
Btw I'm mostly choose intel or liquy moly for my team.
Or Marek lmp1 on project cars 2 where it's faster than both audi and porsche, and their other fictional lmp1 car. They always have a 100% win rate on career mode and basically any race.

THANK YOU for praising Honda so much at the beginning of the video. In a way they are really not discussed much at all in regards to good performance compared to how Mercedes was praised for years on end. Not once have I heard anyone talk positively about the Honda engine during the broadcasts (it's always "OP DRS" and despite the engine, not because of), and even in the official F1 games the Honda engine is the 2nd or 3rd best after Mercedes (at least last time I checked), which just doesn't make any sense at this point. They are the biggest reason Red Bull are winning - without them Adrian Newey would have not been compelled enough to give it his all once more.

The main reason why people don’t say the engine is OP is because of how poorly the AT was in 2022 and 2023. Yes. The Honda engine can punch with the Mercedes and Ferrari engines, but it’s nothing like the engine advantage Mercedes had from 2014-2021

Let's not forget that Max Verstappen has evolved really wide-apart eyes to see around the halo. (Or, more importantly, he is capable of handling extremely twitchy cars, which are incredibly fast if you can keep them on the road and out of the barriers.)
You are describing the high speed, agile herbivore like a Gazelle, Springbok or Pronghorn with eyes set wide to see who is chasing them. But unlike Lewis and other prey animals, Max is an omnivore and loves red meat, if it catches up...he is more like the Peregrine falcon, the fastest animal on the planet.

Major factor in the transformation to unbeatable monster: the human fly by wire system called "Max Verstappen". It may be that the RB19 was more "stable" in the sense of aerodynamic efficiency through the antidive and antisquat geometry, in another way the secret of the speed of the RB19 is actually its UNstability. To see this we can look at fighter jets like F16. These are intentionally built slightly unstable. This feature, which is called relaxed static stability (RSS), gives the plane both reduced air resistance and better manouvrability. To still make the F16 controllable by a human pilot is not controlled directly by the pilot but via a fly by wire system that inputs the commands of the pilot to a computer, which performs continual small corrections to compensate for the unstability of the platform. More or less the same thing goes for racingcars where a car with lots of front end grip ("pointy") and relatively "loose" rear end, which is easy to "rotate", are know to be the fastest design. The problem with such unstable "nervous" designs is, however, that they are hard to control. But in F1 such computer controlled fly by wire is of course not allowed. Which means that it is the skill of the driver that determines how pointy, nervous and unstable (and thus fast) the car can be made. It is here that Verstappen really shines, because there is no other driver who can handle a car as nervous and pointy as Verstappen can. As Alex Albon (who also like a pointy nervous car...) told in another video: "Verstappen is on another level, when you try to drive a car that is set up for Verstappen, it is like you try to play a computergame with the sensitivity of the mouse turned up to the max...". It is also this inbuilt pointyness and nervousness of the Red Bulls that causes so many problems for Verstappens teammates like Perez, Kvyat and Albon, because they can't handle this, and start making mistakes, or actually become slower, because they can not drive their natural style in the RB. Also many have compared Verstappen to Michael Schumacher who is another driver who liked and could handle a very nervously setup car, and got his speed from that. So there you have it: this inbuilt nervousness and the the fact that Verstappen has the talent to drive a car with a faster but more hard to handle setup than all of the other drivers in the current circuit is one very important factor in the RB19 being so bloody fast.
O and by the way: it may look like Verstappen makes very few steering movements in the corner, but as Albon said, that is an illusion: Verstappen continuously makes very small corrections to keep his nervous car on the desired trajectory.

- As a kid in karting Max rode 53 races of which he WON 51, and in the two that did not win he DNF for mechanical problems.
- In karting Max became European Champion 2x in a row and then he became World Champion in a season where he completely dominated the field and destroyed all top level riders, including people like Charles LeClerk etc etc.
- Going from karts to cars Max skipped the learner classes and immediately went to F3, where he immediately won 10 races, of which 6 in a row and became 3d in the championship, despite several DNF's. (in a mediocre car, of a small privatteer team: van Amelsfoort racing)
- Then - again - Max skipped the intermediate classes and after that he became the YOUNGEST ever F1 driver in 2016 aged 17,
- and immediately he WON his first Grand Prix in that year (Barcelona) in a car that was no better than the Alpha Tauri of today.
- Also in 2016 he HUMILIATED the complete field (including Alonso) in the Rain in Brazil.
- Also BEFORE 2022, when the MERC AND FERRARI where still the FASTER cars, Max already WON 20 GP's
- in 2021 he became the RIGHTFULL WDC, despite being Torpedo'd at Silverstone at 250 mph by Hamilton who was not punished for that crime. He WON the Most GP's and became CHAMPION in a car that was then SLOWER then the Merc.
- In his own team Max has outqualified ALL his teammates (except the first year in RB, when he was still 17 and new and the car had been designed and setup for the much more experienced Ricciardo) by a margin of 20 to 1 or so.
- In the WET training Montreal, while the others where still struggling to cope, and Perez again missed his braking points (in the SAME car!) Verstappen immediately set a FAST time that was 1.2 whole seconds (!) faster than everybody else and even 1.7 seconds faster than Hamilton (the so called "rain master"?)...
- And there is another question you should ask yourself. IFF Max was not the FASTEST driver by far, then WHY would all the top-teams have been lining up to get him. Do you think these people (the best engineers in the world!) are IRRATIONAL? Do you really think that they would pay Max 50 mil p.y. if somebody else was faster? No of course not. These people have direct acces to the TELEMETRY DATA of their drivers. And these telemetry data simply SHOW that MAX is the FASTEST DRIVER IN THE FIELD. THAT is why they want him and pay him huge amounts of money to drive for them.
Now you can (and probably will...) keep DELUDING yourself otherwise. But the FACTS will keep piling up. MAX is the Fastest driver (BY FAR)

4) even though Max spent twice as many years in karting than all the current drivers, he performed worse than Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Russell, Albon, Gasley, Norris, Nyck de Vires & Oscar prairie. With Alonso, Hamilton & Vettel being that good that they are in the FIA karting Hall of Fame.
5) Van Amelsfoort is a great team with a great win history & and was good enough for Jos verstappen & Mick Schumacher to win the championship 👍
6) Max didn't win his 1st F1 in Spain 2016🤣 he started in 2015 for Toro Rosso
7) saying the Redbull was set up for Ricardo to justify him beating Max both years is nearly as funny as you saying Redbull was no better than Toro Rosso in 2016, when Redbull finished 2nd & Toro Rosso 7th.

Every single saturday is a wee bit misleading - the RB19's qualifying pace in SPA and Suzuka is superb.
Yeah, it's more of a spectrum than clear cut black and white statement as the video puts it. They were weakest in qualifying on street tracks and strongest at high-speed, old-school tracks. Depending on the track, the qualifying would vary between those extremes, with Max doing his best to compensate for that weakness on said worse tracks.
Those tracks were where max excel not so much the car

The RB19 was only so dominant in 1 man's hands.
In creating the dominate RB19, Red Bull cheated on the FIA's cost cap by 2% of the $145M development budget, which equals $2.9M overspend. I response, the FIA implemented a penalty against RB pay another $7.5M in fines. So, essentially, RB spent $10.4M to have a dominate RB19 over the past two years... not what I'd call a fair arrangement!
@@BobbyOfEarth The overspend was a little over 1.8 million with no proof of malicious intend. They also got a 7 million fine and 10% less windtunnel time so the penalty was a lot more severe than the overspend. Do you often like to make things up?

Combine that with a team who where almost flawless in their strategies and execution on the race weekend and there you have it. The RB19 was a fenomenal car but in my opinion it really was the perfomance that Max showed that took it to the levels of domenation we saw.

What the narrator didn't mention is that Max honed his driving style to make sure the car remains very stable through corners. He manages to restrain himself, brake a little earlier, keep the car flat and get on the power soon enough... He doesn't think it's very much fun but gets the most out of it in different circumstances.
And people still say the car is "built for max" when its just built to be as fast as possible, it is done by having a sharp front end which is very sensitive and only a few F1 drviers in history can really master. Max is one of those drivers. I believe in Spa this year they tried to offer Checo the same setup in qualifying because he was going so slow but he responded with "it would be undriveable". Shows the skill of Max.

Great video, but i think one of the missed factors about what made the car unbeatable that really wasn't mentioned is Max himself. Perez underperformed by a lot. But i don't think the car was as easy to drive as some think it was. Albon brought this up in an interview about his time with Red Bull. That Max can make a tricky car look easy to drive when it's not. That the faster he pushed to catch Max the more unstable the car became for him. I think we've seen Perez suffer from this as well.
Well the car was made around Max , they literally made a car for him that suits him, and that a huge part of why both the car and Max are good.... neither can be without the other
@@nikstoj9547 no, they made the car to go as fast as it can under the rule sets. Any number one driver is going to have set up preferences prioritized the same thing goes for Hamilton or any other number one driver that's not new. But they don't build a car to fit a style. They build a car to go as fast as possible and it's up to the driver and his talent to transform that into a race win.
Both albon and Perez have said Red Bulls have always been very difficult to drive and Max is able to get to that next level which they both cannot do without spinning out crashing.
Albon said it in a great video interview where he said the faster he pushed the car. The more unstable it became. Where Max did the same thing and got faster lap after lap. He had a hard time dealing with that because he isn't at Max's level.
Everyone forgets the time when Mercedes was dominating and the only other car that was competing with them was Max. And he was dealing with a car that was underpowered, had reliability problems and wasn't designed around the engine until Honda came on board. Yet he was still usually second or third behind Lewis and Bottas. Remember those 3 have the longest/largest record for finishing 1-2-3 in some order in F1 history.

A great car and a great driver, surrounded by a group of people that, at the moment, have good chemistry and cooperation. While on the other hand, Mercedes and especially Ferrari, have completely dropped the ball in 23....

agreed. hamilton in his best years (imho 2018) is probably equal to or maybe slightly better or slightly worse than verstappen rn (hamilton end of 2021 also applies here). but i dont think 2020 was hamilton's greatest year in terms of his own skill. but 2023 would definitely be prime verstappen rn.

Eventhough i was too small to understand the world of f1, i did not forget the experience when i finally started to understand the sport. So, can someone discuss why a energy drink company has a team of designers and engineers that is able to out think, out produce, and out perform companies like Ferrari, McLaren et al. who've been making sports cars for decades? Indeed, that's all they do? I'm a newb but it's very peculiar - like Carnival cruise ships all of a sudden making a world-leading super-computer or something. There are basically zero overlaps in competencies.

In short, RedBull has yoinked some of the best specialists in F1, several of whom have been in F1 for decades and have been behind many successful teams/cars, and created its own version of the 2002 Ferrari team. All this through the magic of having an unimaginable amount of money.
When 1 car out performs the other 9 we almost blame it for being too fast. Yet if 9 cars out performed 1, we’d blame the 1 for being too slow. In a game where every team is trying to be the fastest, we can’t blame the fastest car for ‘bad racing’. It was never the teams jobs to give good racing, it’s their jobs to perform to their best. If RedBulls best performance outcompetes all other teams, then we should instead be reflecting on why 9 teams in F1 are performing to their ‘maximum’ and yet being beaten fairly by RedBull. And we should appreciate the greatness we are seeing from RedBull and its drivers to accomplish such results - it is not easy, they simply make it look easy.

Respectfully, your data analysis has some issues.
A dominant _car_ wouldnt be dominant if only 1 of the 2 drivers can get everything out of it. That speaks to how good Max is more than how good the RB19 is.
A dominant _car_ will enable both drivers on a team to easily be quicker than every other team. As someone who detests Mercedes, it is withgreat dismay that I tell you that the 2015 Mercedes W06 was more dominant.
In that year, Nico and Lewis had a combined average finish of 3.21. in 2023, Max and Checo had a combined average finish of 4.25.
Now, taking this a step further, a car being dominant should also have a big gap to its competitors, else its not "dominant", just better.
I went back and took the time delta between the winner and the next closest competitor from a different team. I averaged those numbers.
In 2015, Mercedes had an average delta to its closest competitor of 19.702 seconds. In 2023, Max (lol checo only won once) had a delta average of 15.89.
That 2015 season was by far the most dominant CAR F1 has ever seen. Ive done this analysis compared to other years, like Schumachers era, Mclarens era, etc. A few of those come close to this 2015 season.
Trust me, i don't like it but it is what it is. And to think Toto admitted that in the 2014-2017 years they were DETUNING the engine so the FIA wouldn't hit them with a BOP. It could have been _even_ faster.
But all the records that Max broke, mostly happened due to the length of the season. And the fact that his teammate couldn't even finish in the top 5, let alone second shows that the RB19 was great, but Max was greater. Because anither stat that would show this is if we compared the delta of where one driver finished compared to the other, to get a sense for how easy the car was to drive. Checo isnt that bad of a driver, the RB19 is just a lot harder to drive than the W06 was.
If we did an adjustment for season length and then applied that to Mercedes, theyd have amassed more total constructors points than RB in 2023 simply because Lewis and Nico finished much higher in the order on average per race than Max and Checo.
Kinda agree with u. In the podcast Albon said that Max had a unique driving style and he liked a very snappy car. In my book RB19 is good in Max hand only bcos it is like taylor made for Max driving style. Mercedes cars like the W11 are more dominant.
Come off it dude.... Perez got 2nd in the drivers championship despite being trash. That car was the most dominant we have seen to date, just like people will argue you cant compare drivers from different eras you can't compare data from different formulas. This car won the most consecutive races, the highest win percentage in a season, and most laps led in a season during a time when F1 is ultra competitive down the grid. The argument is saying because Perez did not perform means the car wasnt dominate is ridiculous.... put a top tier driver (IE: Alonso,Hamilton,Leclerc) in the sister car to Max and the team would have probably scored 900+ points.
@@MP422ownz Sergio won second because McLaren Mercedes Ferrari and Aston all played hot potato with who had the 2nd fastest car on the grid. Could someone else done a much better job and made the results much more dominant? Absolutely. But we can’t ignore the fact that in seasons past typically your top 3 were clear and typical your second most competitive team was 2nd by a relative margin.

Would have been years Red Bull probaply won the championship if they had equal engine power to Mercedes and Ferrari.
With a certain VERY likely 1 minute 35 second laptime by Max Verstappen in 2018 for Singapore pole..
I watched a lap comparison between the 2 laps.. Max only lost on power related parts of the track.. and gained more in especially sector 2.
Also mentioning the RB16 from 2020 that probaply only needed a bit more power to be closer to Mercedes and beat them more often if they would not take that title anyway too.
Fully agree there, RB aero has almost always been amazing. Also the 2020 car while fast had horrific handling issues that they only fixed for 2021

It is one driver always winning. The RB19 is a great car and certainly the best car on the 2023 grid. It was not as dominant compared to the rest of the cars on its own as the mid-2010s Merc. However, what made it so dominant was Max's talent and skill + a car that he knew so well and suited him so perfectly = the most dominant season since the early 1990s.
Japanese engine conquers racing scene plus you have talented driver . thats just completes the combo meal

12:10. Yeah i still find to this day there is something screwed up about the engine oenalty rule. Mercedes just decided to replace their engine twice in the last part of the season only giving them a 5 place grid penalty since they already took the 10 place one..
I just don't get why a team can run 1 fresh engine outside the rules for a 10 place grid penalty the first time and than only 5 for the second time.. litterly giving them the option: yeah we can just fry this engine in quali mode and get a new one while the competition is needing to hold back on power because they DID do a good job on reliability.
I'm sure many teams now will just simply copy everything from RedBull like the Aero or Suspension.
But they'll never be able to make a Clever Efficient DRS system, which on RB19 when activated creates a Chain reaction effect of Stalling (Eliminating Downforce Effect) the Rear Beam wing and Diffuser which in turn reduces Drag. A real genius design by the Legend Adrian Newey
Well, i'd say that incredible DRS is thanks to Wache and his team. Newey might have helped with brainstorming, but ultimately he only did the actual design of the suspension himself. The aero was done by Wache and his team and i figure that includes said DRS. No surprise that they came up with something like that though, since they learnt from the aero master himself in the form of Newey.
Honda+Newey+Max is the best combo ever in Fórmula 1.

You know how some people suspected Dale Earnhardt could _see_ the air coming off of cars in front of him? I'd say it has to be the same for Adrian Newey, then. There's a lot of talk about legendary drivers, less so about engineers. He's certainly one of them, long with Chapman, Symonds, Byrne and maybe a handful more.
While I agree with what you meant about redbull having worse qualifying pace than race pace, they still ended up having the most pole positions in 2023. So its not really like they failed as a single lap car either.
Both the RB18 Bahrain and Australian dnfs were fuel supply issues. Bahrain seemed to be a fuel supply issue located inside the fuel tank (redbulls responsibility). While the Australia failure was also a fuel issue, it was external to the fuel tank and thus Honda's responsibility... At least that's what Horner said after Australia.
That "GP3 engine" helped a lot with motivation to get back on their feet also i think.
I would argue McLaren was their best competition for 2023. Especially from a viewing perspective too. Because most people don't care about the statistics and minute lap by lap pace.

In defense of Checo, he was still able to remain in second place for the drivers championship with the RB19 despite a shaky season. Max, however, drives in a way that makes you believe him and the car are one. So, I feel like it is both max and the RB19 which are both two unbeatable monsters coming together to make an unstoppable demon
The RB 19 reminds me of Ferrari 2004. Schumacher won 12 of the opening 13 races. He crashed in the other. Also Barrichello stood on the podium in all but three races.

Computational aerodynamic modelling is at a point where a reduction in time in the tunnel for RedBull is much less of an inconvenience than it would have been a short time ago.
And now the RB20 has the zero side pod design and is an absolute MONSTER. Newey looked at that Merc and said "I can fix her" and went wizard mode.

I’d argue that the 2004 Ferrari was a more dominant car.
As while I’d didn’t win as many races, both drivers were very strong with Barrichello having a greater lead over 3rd place than checo with today’s points system and done in only 18 races.
Agree on the F2004, considering it was made at a time where reliability issues were prevalent across the whole field.
It's only when you look at the other cars that were meant to be It's rivals, you understand that there were flaws in designs that stopped us seeing a 2012-esque scenario.
Imagine if Merc and Ferrari had a package that didn't allow Aston Martin to be the 2nd best team early in the season...

I have one grievance with this video. Red Bull did not have to develop the RB19 with the wind tunnel restriction penalty. The penalty wasn’t implemented until October of 2022, by that point the RB19 would have been already most of the way developed. We will likely see most of the impact of the penalty going into the RB20 because the penalty covered until October 2023 this past year. If you said the penalty had some minor influence on the RB19 I’d agree but it’s not like Red Bull had started development of the RB19 in October of 2022. The only team that did really start development of their 2023 challenger in October was McLaren because they scrapped their 2023 design and went back to the drawing board.

Although the red has great aero, its suspension is its best quality.. my question is, didn’t Mercedes have pretty trick suspension pre ground effect to keep the car in its peak downforce window? If so how’d they seem to not fully consider that the suspension would be key on the ground effect cars? I may be completely wrong tho
The trick is that twitchy cars the easily change direction are faster, but harder to drive. Max can drive them twitchier than anybody.
Two things RedBull has that no other team has are the difference; Adrian Newey and Max Verstappen. Max removes all barriers to Adrian Newey's genius. There isn't a F1 car Newey can design that Max can't drive.
RB19 was undeniably a great car but its not like any F1 driver can step in it and make it an instant success. It was a tricky car to drive as shown by Sergio Perez. So you can't really name the car without naming the driver that made that car a success : Max Verstappen. Not only did he extract every % of performance out of it, he helped steer the development behind the scenes with his inputs, something not every driver knows how to do. He feels what could be improved, and makes suggestions.

Under current rules that's really the case, back when I was a kid, you would have drivers like Picket, who won not so much because he won more races, but because cause he was more consistent, Senna and Prost also were very consistent and won a lot. Than rules began to change more often and nowadays is almost impossible to win a championship without being the one at the top most of the time.
And anyone thatlaughed at Honda in 2014 was and idiot, Honda has a lot of titles to back it as a serious competitor, even if it takes a couple years to get it right again.

Red Bull with these new regulations can't be hit.. do it and like Vegeta in Ultra Ego gain power from the damage. 2017 and 2018 were seasons i believe where Red Bull knows how to get through hard times.. you have now a team with a great car that knows how te perform in chaos.. when a team DOES step up.. it will be 1 glorious fight
