Kendall Jenner, Megan Fox, Michelle Keegan are just some of the women who have been praised for being ‘natural beauties’. Their faces are technically perfect, apparently. Yet are these women actually ‘natural’ beauties? or, have their beautiful faces been tweaked, refine and enhanced? These days, it seems that to be considered a natural beauty, you need to have had a little help from a plastic surgeon. You need a little filler. A little botox. A little nose job. Thats still natural beauty… right? Well i don’t think so. I think we’re heading down a slippery slope where being an ACTUAL natural beauty - aka your face as nature intended isn’t good enough anymore. Its not enough to be pretty. To be yourself. No, you need to be PERFECT. And that’s a real problem. Because people aren’t perfect. We all have our own unique faces, features and quirks - but now they’re considered flaws. That we have to fix. Then we’ll be ‘naturally beautiful’. It’s actually really bloody problematic. And no - i’m not a natural beauty either. I’ve dabbled in all the things. Filler, botox and cosmetic tattooing. Is natural beauty gone for good?
Thank you to Typology for partnering with me on today’s video!

Sometimes I wish makeup was never invented so people wouldn’t be so conditioned to expect women to wear it and so their idea of what’s natural isn’t so warped. I know some ancient (and less ancient) cultures wore makeup, including men, but idk how much it was expected back then. I just know about today. I wish it was the standard for us not to wear makeup and be just as barefaced as men, which is what should be considered natural.

What also concerns me is that the "natural beauty" demonstrated by many of these celebs via cosmetic surgery is essentially "westernised beauty". Ethnic features are being eliminated across the board and it's really worrying. The people suggesting these changes are presumably people with the power to make or break a career, reinforced by a media which praises the results, so there's also a power dynamic involved. It's something that's gone on since early Hollywood but it's gained so much traction in the last few decades. The net result is that children from non-white backgrounds will feel that their very heritage renders them ugly. It's so sad and scary.

It’s not weird when you get bombarded with the same face ten times plus a day. The unconscious mind registers “this is beauty” and when we look in the mirror “this is not beauty”. Notice people who aren’t chronically online appreciate different types of beauty but people who are online can only appreciate one type. Hence why they want to fit into that mold. Exactly, historically we always find some sort of exaggerated features more desirable, as they stimulate us more than just a pleasant symmetry. Like sure the symmetry is nice but then throw in some tweaks that exaggerate certain features and it's so much more interesting!! Like personally I am a sucker for big, beautiful, bumpy noses. The most beautiful feature apart from obvious ones like the eyes because they make dynamic. And even with eyes just think of the example of heterochromia and how many people go crazy over it because it breaks up the symmetry in an interesting way!

There are the outliers of course, but most of us are still completely natural. I've never had any procedures, fillers, fake eyelashes, hair, etc. the only thing I've ever done is to dye my hair, and that is a very rare occasion that happens maybe once every couple of years. Because naturally beautiful people already have a harmonic face, with certain things you focus on to bring it all together.
But they end up changing the wrong things and ruin that, and makes the whole face to loose balanced contrast between features, and the slight "imperfections" won't lead your eyes to their standout features anymore, and they wont stand out as much.
      Does that make sense?

  • @mauchkimberly

Absolutely agreeing witth you on this one. This is damaging to young women, and particularly young women/teens with small extended families or broken homes. When you don't see people that look like you, and especially as females because looks are so heavily prioritised with females, and the ones shown to be "beautiful" have no characteristics you have, it's easy to believe you're not attractive. Seeing the relatives you get your looks from can be helpful with this, I think. Granted those relatives will be older, but the feeling of belonging goes a long way. I regularly talk to my daughter about her grandmother because she looks just like her and never got to meet her. I know she's struggling with beauty standards, so I really want to remind her that beauty is more than what your skin, hair, face, etc. looks like. Her gran was a beautiful woman and I tell her regularly (and I'm pleased to say her dad also says that about his mom, which is really good feedback for a daughter to hear from her dad).

The media or “society” on average may think Kim Kardashain or Bella Hadid are the definition of beauty, but I know plenty of people who don’t like that manufactured look at all. Their children can have the features they were dissatisfied with but children are no longer looking like their parents. A lot of women are all looking the same, even alot of Male actors have nose or facial lifts. These days to be a natural beauty does not include celebrities or actors. i do think that natural beauty is dead, this societe pushes you to either get plastic surgery/fillers/botox or to cake your face with makeup but no matter what you'll get criticized. If you have work done to your face is bad, if you put on too much makeup it's bad but if you don't put on any makeup you'll also get criticized and get comments like "you're not put together", "you could've make an effort and put on a little bit of makeup", "you look sick".... I even feel like you're unconsciously forced to be into skincare because you're bombarded with girls with perfect glass skin everywhere, with no pores, no blemish, no redness and if you have some "imperfections" you can get comments like "you should try this and this and this, you're skin will be perfect afterwards !"...

    • @snowfoxxie
      @snowfoxxie Před měsícem +13

Definitely. People make billions from our insecurities so the more natural beauty is dead- the more we need to buy to feel like we even look non-ugly/reasonable.

All of this banks on you caring what others think though. Just do what makes you happy and screw what “society” wants you to look like. I know it’s easier said than done, but we’ve gotta to start rebelling against these notions instead of giving in to them.

Thank you for making this kind of content. It’s really important to talk about and you get the right balance of not calling anyone ugly etc in their old appearances but still highlighting how they’re gone to alter their appearances and how we haven’t noticed and think we are so inferior to these ‘naturally’ beautiful celebrities. I also applaud you for speaking openly that you’ve had things done as you are also very beautiful but again we know that while most of that is you and your genetics there is that added element which requires enhancements to look like what society currently defines as naturally beautiful. More talking about this could make some people get these procedures but I hope it ultimately makes people realise that this is all a facade too and we are finally seeing behind the curtain! I hope society can start turning away from all this but I think it will only be increasing unfortunately. Like in South Korea it seems like so man young girls are already doing what previously only people in the public eye were doing.

@@leinaleilani Yeah I had a correction to my septum because of a breathing problem I had since I was twelve. I had previously had a bump on my bridge and I never said to shave it, in fact I said to leave it, but it was shaved, in fact my bridge was what surgeons call "overscooped". I wondered if he had me confused with someone else! But then, he did fix my breathing issue so I guess not? Anyway, I went back for a revision to get him to raise the bridge of my nose (it didn't give me my exact old nose back, but it's a lot closer to what it used to be). There's a problem of a bundle of scar tissue on my nose tip that makes my eyes water/sinus sting for some reason if I rub it a certain way but I'm not going to the same surgeon three times because he seems to be a screw up. I think I will have to travel to get that repaired because the only other surgeon in my city that I called, the receptionist hung up on me every time I tried to introduce myself over the phone (I suspect it was because I spoke English) and so that left me with one option. He had good reviews and stuff and since I was only going in for a medical issue and not cosmetic I thought no big deal but unfortunately he decided I wasn't good looking enough and that he needed to play god on my face. So now I will have to pay for yet another revision. But on the bright side, my medical problem was solved so I do try to focus on that because it was really a big problem for me (I had basically massive sinus headaches, as if they were migraines, for about 10 years). So yes, you are right, it DOES happen. It seems like she is fibbing, but there's a chance she's telling the truth (but in her case I kinda doubt it).

@venus_envy -- That's... weird. He shouldn't have been in that area of your nose (the bridge) if he was just fixing the deviated septum. And then to not get it right a second time? That's straying into malpractice territory, one would think, since he did something you specifically told him not to. From both personal experience and anecdotal evidence, fixing septums and/or turbinates (often done together) doesn't change the outside shape of your nose (I was disappointed to learn, as I'd hoped my nose bump would get smaller).

It meant more like a laidback girl next door, almost a tomboy or a granola. If someone is wearing tons of glossy makeup they already aren’t a natural beauty to me. Most of them look overdone, and OLDER. I'm 30 years old. Only a couple actually ever just got a nose job (which was the one procedure I was thinking of getting, but I eventually realized that my nose is a pretty normal size and shape) anyway, I do have forehead wrinkles starting to come in, and I have found that those patches called Frownies have been a game changer for me. You have to wear them at night consistently, but they work pretty much overnight. The effect lasted at first for only a few hours, but I'm a month into it now and it lasts all day, and your skin tells you when it's time to wear em again. Awesome product, and not permanent!

Stephanie, I really appreciate this series of posts you have done which exposes the truth. It’s really young women who need to be informed that what they envy isn’t even real. So many don’t know. Discovering that those women that they wish they could be like are largely artificial may be the very impetus that flips the standards from artificial to true natural beauty. As you pointed out, they do exist but they are also unique. And of course, it’s still about who you are that brings all of it to life.

Yeah ... There is always going to be the argument for freedom of choice when it comes to plastic surgery. My concern is that this pressure to look like a doll as a cis het woman is too close to making our lives a performance (for societal norms/the male gaze etc) and it is very hard for me to be convinced that the main reason someone is getting plastic surgery is "I did it for myself" and not because life is easier in the patriarchy when you fit the standard beauty norms. And I feel sad about the implicit pressure we all feel to play along with that game in order to live a fulfilling life "for ourselves"

Male gaze lol. Men never asked for this nor do they care about it. The beauty industry is run almost entirely by women and gay men. Women influence other women to look a certain way = its mens fault. In order to solve the problem you have to look at whats causing it and its womens own securities and herd like mentality where they just have to follow the next trend.

The "I did it for myself" is such major bullshit lol just admit you wanted to conform to the beauty standards to feel more attractive and go, no need to make up excuses. As if I'm gonna believe anyone would spend time and effort in a full face of makeup or fillers\botox\plastic surgery if they were on a deserted island with no other humans because that means "I did it for myself".
I use makeup because it makes me feel good, because I feel more conforming to what society expects from me as a female-presenting person, I'm aware of the mechanism and I chose to abide by the rules to live an easier societal life. That's it, no need to hide lol
