We all know how damaging the female beauty standards are for us women these days, and cant actually be met by nature. But until now - men haven't been held to the same standard. Now? These unrealistic beauty standards has trickled down to our men, and even naturally handsome men are feeling the pressure to surgically alter their looks to fit the male ideal.
Botox, facelifts, filler and buccal fat removal - fake tan, brow grooming and anti ageing skincare. Cosmetic procedures and routines are becoming big business for men, but it begs the question; is it necessary? Or is it all leading towards the male beauty standard becoming as problematic for men, as the beauty standards are for women? Let's hope not!

@@Elhastezy888 That might be one harmful effect of sexism specifically on men. It could be that being insecure about one's looks is considered a "women's issue", so when men feel that way, they would feel the need to hide it and just try to get on, or compensate in narcissistic ways (e.g. by putting down women, like the men who are now running around calling Margot Robbie "mid"). Makes you think if such shallow people got into an accident where they were disfigured, if they would suddenly believe they weren't worthy of living or of love just because their outer appearance changed. Do they not realize they have a whole complex inner universe that stays constant and, therefore, everyone regardless of their outer shell has that too? Each life and body is a literal miracle yet people can be so shallow. I don't understand.

As man in my 40s, what I find most astounding is that many younger men and women now describe themselves as “old” once they hit 30! I can only speak for myself, but found that I looked much better in my 30s than I ever did in my 20s. Obviously I did the basic stuff like had a skincare routine and exercised but nothing to the point of extreme. This need to have your face look like an IG filter in real life is crazy.
I also think people don’t take into account the insane body standards that today’s young men hold themselves to. Unless you happen to be genetically blessed, trying to get your body to look like your favorite Marvel actor is near impossible without tons of time and money. The fact that most of these actors only maintain their super shredded bodies until movie filming ends should tell you something.

This. I even heard lots of really young people (20-25) saying they wish they were still teens because they're getting old... like wtf, I'm 37 and don't feel old yet lol. This obsession with being forever youthful is ridiculous.
And I also think I look better now in my 30's than in my 20's, like you said - you start to care a bit more about yourself, what you eat, exercise, take better care of your skin, find your style and what suits you instead of just following whatever current trend is...

We’re literally told that an 18 yr old is better to be with and to look at. This idea of being old at that age was taught to us. It didn’t just magically appear in our heads. Ever since then, he has consistently gone for about 4-5 years, six times a week, never missed one day. Even on the day before his big final exam, he insisted on going. Now, of course, he's got muscles and whatnot and get's complimented all the time. I can see a glimpse of pain in his eyes whenever someone makes jokes about how skinny he was before and how he looks so much better now and is a "real man" and not a "twing" anymore. Whenever anyone brings up his past appearance, he makes sure to eat a huge plate of about 5-6 scrambled eggs plus 3 slices of bread smothered with peanut butter for dinner, and I can see him struggling and wanting to puke. I think culture has done this. When we have "dating" apps where you swipe left or right based totally on a picture, physical appearance becomes increasingly more important. Our expectations for each other's looks has also gone up. We see filtered pictures all the time and that image is becoming ingrained in our minds as normal. I think people labeling Margot Robbie as a "Mid" is evidence of this.
I hope in a few years everyone says enough is enough and we have a renaissance where personality, intelligence, and talents will make people the most attractive. Things feel very shallow right now, but I'm hopeful for change.

He’s always talked about how he hates training so hard for roles and how it is dangerous for men to eat and drink so little just for the optimum muscle definition. He has been open about the pressure male celebrities also have- even if it’s not severe as women- and people shrugged him off because “he’s hot” which is EXTRA salt on the wound. Zac Efron was one of the most wanted men and if he felt he wasn’t masculinely handsome enough for people to take him seriously is just horrifying.
After that, male cosmetic surgery has been more rampant. Even though it existed before it was more subtle cause men wanted to keep it even more hidden since cosmetic surgery was “a woman’s thing”

And while I don’t necessarily conform or want to conform to them anymore, I am considering getting hairline transplants to fix my receding hairline as my hair is a big source of confidence for me. But I otherwise don’t care to change much else.
I like my face, and I’m currently in the process of undergoing a major weight loss. I care the most about having clear, smooth skin, and being healthy as a whole. It’s taken years of therapy for me to reach this point, but I did. And while I don’t think wanting to look your best is a bad thing, I’m seeing more and more men feel similar pressures to women in regards to unattainable beauty standards. It’s really sad and I empathize with guys who have massive self esteem issues and body dysmorphia like I used to.
I enjoy looking good, but I don’t obsess over looking a certain way anymore in spite of the pressures being put on me to fit a specific and ever changing beauty standard. Otherwise you'll waste tons of money and still need to take drugs for the rest of your life if you don't want that transplated hair to fall off again. And it goes way beyond that since in Hollywood men must have a six pack and the less hair on their chest the better and so on. Many men are training excessively to have the "perfect body" which is not healthy nor does it look good.
    Sending love and good vibes

It's evident that beauty standards not only affect women, but also men, just that for women it's more spoken of unlike for men...
The world is at a point where natural beauty is seen as "ugly" or "unfit"...
I wish the small number of people who understand what the world is doing will help other people who are struggling with such issues so that we could at least save the tiny ratio that's left 😢

There are many more beauty extremes in media these days. You see complete, full faces of make up, to the point of looking airbrushed but then you also see more women going without make up in public, in shows and in movies. It used to be shocking if you saw a commercial or show where the actresses weren't wearing make up, especially if they were A list celebrities. Thank goodness that's atleast more common now.

Men are probably subject to beauty standards because women (at least within western/global north of the world) have more autonomy and economic power then our foremothers so don’t have to settle for men who do not care for their looks.
This is not to say that men should go for drastic invasive procedures to look attractive, but they are increasingly becoming subject to the same ridicule women faced. previously our worth and survival ( depending on our cultural, country or economic roots as women globally still face this issue) depended mainly on our looks and the men who choose to marry us.

This is fascinating Stephanie and gives this momma some insight. My 19 yr old son said to me recently that he hated his jawline. I was shocked when he compared it to his older brother saying its not as "strong". Had to remind him that his heart shaped face(that is just like mine)is perfectly handsome and never forget that. I really didn't think men were being targeted, but sadly I was so wrong.

Whether it be masculinity, being a provider, height, their performance in the bedroom, etc. The amoubt of pressure and expectations we put on ourselves as human beings is alarming, and really sad. I hope people can have the strength to remain true to themselves, and be unapologetically themselves. Great video x

i never understood the pressure men are under until a boy in my class held a presentation a few years back about fitness. i was into fitness back then like pilates and toning your body but this was differrent. he talked about natty and steroids, things i back then never really thought about. his voice got shaky when he talked about it. it must have been hard openly expressing this perceived pressure. the fact that a 18 yo can spot steroid use in pictures the same way i spotted photoshop was very new to me. and knowing what things like photoshop did to my self esteem, i knew it had done something to him too. i would like to see you have a man on here and talk about his experiences, about the pressure they feel that we women often dont get confronted with. it would be very interesting because at least to me that was a completely new world.

it's really sad because for every celebrity getting a procedure there are many many new actors, body doubles, stuntspersons, backup dancers, models, internet figures and regular people feeling the same pressure to look a certain way. and honestly men might find it harder to resist this pressure because they have not been oppressed in the same way as women. a lot of men don't know what to look out for, as a sign of insidious coercion in the beauty world.

honestly beauty standards aren’t “just starting” to impact men as well as women. Men have been suffering from unrealistic beauty standards just as long as women have and the consequences are equally as severe for all genders. I think it’s really important that people with a large audience, even if that audience is primary made up of women, address male beauty standards as well because the impact of those standards effects ALL of us living together in that society

There is a major difference in the male/female experience and people love to talk about it but you might be surprised how many similarities or things we can all understand just existing in this world as a sentient being. Id personally like to hear more of those experiences even if it also includes the male/female perspective.
