I can't even say how happy I am to see them go thicker for more battery and better cooling. Always loved the form factor but hated that they sacrificed performance and battery just for the sake of being "the thinnest".

Intel and Nvidia are the ones to blame, they're only going after pusing out big performance numbers. Hell nah would I want a thick ass laptop that's heavy and has a shitty batterylife.

Might not be possible, but what do i know.
My company used the Razer laptops. 10 out of the 12 had multiple issues over a span on 2 years. 2 dead motherboards, battery swelling 10+ times, webcam failed on 3, wifi dead on 5, etc etc. Each time it took 1-2mo for the RMA process.
Not an uncommon (it could probably be argued that it's a common) story with razerblade laptops.
Yes, they are low quality products.

My early 2019 Razer Blade 15 Advanced (2070MQ) is still going strong after ~4 years. No battery bloat, no issues apart from a TB driver issue when I updated windows recently - had to do a fresh windows install. Still handles most games like a champ.
Same here. Their customer service is really bad, or at least was.
Aesthetically this is one of the best CZcams videos I've ever watched.
Syncing the background of the computer to the lighting in the back was awesome and this was such an awesome color config for this room. I feel like the usual blue is very cold in an already cold space this is such a cool juxtaposition of warm colors in a very cold industrial space

@@marzx13 yeah you got lucky. I’ve had a Razer Blade 15 since 2020, and the battery is super swelled. Should have been covered in the warranty. But it’s not, so I’ll never be buying another razer. If longevity is what you’re going for, DO NOT BUY A RAZER

I'm hoping they invested more on their quality control. Something many reviews don't go over is long-term use, I've had to sent back 3 Razer Blades in the past because there would always be defects that would ruin the experience and some would even be dangerous like extreme overheating and batteries expanding. I think if you are going to charge a premium, you should also have the peace of mind that the device will work as intended. Also I should note that this isn't just my experience, there are many small channels and reddit posts talking about this very issue.

Exited to see Dave's new 90p grow out. Starting tanks over is always fun. Quick note however, that you should be careful in buying bunched aquarium plants (like the ludwigia super red/red mini) in that they can come with snails. Buying tissue culture is always the safest option.
I always wonder why freshwater guys don't dip their plants. 5mins in copper would nuke any hitchhikers and (iodine) dips are standard practice in the salt water world.

The 4K and 1080p switch sounds like an integer scale thing since 1080p is a 4th of the resolution of 4K so you could easily assign 4 pixels for 1 pixel when in 1080p mode without having to deal with pixel crawl or improper scaling. The higher refresh rate might also have to do with bandwidth because they don't want to use DSC

That native-resolution switching feature is phenomenal and with that gorgeous screen makes this the clear frontrunner for most desirable mixed use (work/gaming) laptops. I'm currently running a Lenovo Legion Slim 7 with a 5800h and RTX3060, but the Blade 16 would be my most desired device now.
The 18 inch version is my dream laptop, and I'm taking that everywhere with me. I don't care about weight or a perfect fit into a backpack.

@@eniff2925 unfortunately integer scaling is only available on modern GPUs and even then only on some of them. There are some software hacks for games that work regardless of GPU, but that doesn't work for all of them.
Hi Dave! Just a suggestion for laptop reviews. Please let us hear the fan noise when gaming. Next to the short battery life, fan noise is the biggest deal breaker for me for staying away from gaming laptops. But now that desktop components are getting more and more expensive, and gradual desktop PC upgrades are practically out of the picture because of new motherboard and RAM specs, I'm seriously considering investing in a gaming laptop instead of trying to build a desktop PC within the next year or so. It's just that my perception of gaming laptops is still that they are incredibly noisy when being pushed.
I also want to know why gaming laptop makers keep stuffing the top end CPUs into laptops even though they're mostly using beyond 1080p resolution and beyond 144Hz refresh rates. In desktop reviews, most reviewers say that for gaming going beyond an i5 (and its AMD equivalent) has diminishing returns if you choose to game at 1440p and 4K. So I wonder why laptop makers don't cut back on prices and heat by letting customers combine a mid-range CPU with ANY GPU when they're placing an order. You always have to get the tier that has the more expensive and power hungry CPU if you want to get the best GPU that can be placed into the laptop. This isn't a rhetorical question, I'm really curious. :)
4090 mobile is 4080 desktop but price is +2000 Euro. Be ready pay 4000-5000 dollars for nothing.

I OC’d my 2070MQ early 2019 Advanced Blade to like a ~7400-7500 Time Spy Graphics score. Didn’t come across any major issues in 4 years so was looking forward to the next major redesign (and consequently a big jump in performance). Razer is delivering on that front because I feel they got left behind in the TDP race.
Still the most premium laptop chassis out there. Nothing like a true aluminum unibody.

@@jhpk Yeah, like, I’m 4 years in with no battery bloat. I swear there are more MSI/Asus/Lenovo Legion owners talking about and repeating the supposed battery swelling issue than actual Razer Blade owners.
@@anarki_in5680 Well my undervolted late 2019 Advanced R70 Optokb version battery swollen only after a year or so I have to pay $100 for a new battery. Bad experience. I have used almost every Razer peripherals after purchasing Blade, most of them ended with a bad experiences. Guess I have bad luck then?
@@jhpk I guess. If you can swell up any battery in a year for any product, it’s very much your use case that is at fault, or your maintenance.
Qualitatively the only thing Razer can be faulted for is that they use laptop batteries rated for 500 cycles (Apple uses batteries rated for a 1000 cycles). Even so, Razer came out with a 2 year battery warranty now to handle this.
But even without that warranty, since you’re a 2019 owner, 500 cycles puts 500 days of complete 100% charging between you and a possible battery bloat. I imagine you continuously charged and drained out your laptop multiple times a day/gamed on it plugged off a lot? If so then you would bloat many a battery, Razer or otherwise.
@@anarki_in5680 it's the opposite. I rarely drained out my Blade's battery. I can see you have good experience with your Blade but quite can't understand why you are trying to defend the company. Blade battery issue is notorious and have been constant issue for 2018~2020 model users if you can look it up. I have cheap MSI laptop late 2018 which was under a thousand bucks, 2015 Macbook pro which I used very harshly, 2020 Macbook air and very old Samsung laptop. Also have seen my colleagues using laptops from numerous company. NONE of them had swollen battery issue under a 3 year. One year battery issue is unacceptable for any excuses. It's just their QC problem. It's not just for the laptop. If any device uses a lithium ion battery, and if it's more than a whopping three thousand dollar, you expect more than a year long lifespan. At the end of the day now I fully understand Razer. They are just a small Chinese computer peripherals company trying something cool and big. They are not like a Alienware/Legion/ROG which always have reliable big brother behind them.

I'm still rocking my base 2020 blade 15 after 2 years, haven't had too many issues besides having to replace the screen myself (due to damage I accidentally did to it, and for some reason changing the screen out seems to have tripled the battery life). idk if I would want to get another blade whenever I have to upgrade in the future, but this thing is serving me well so far.
I have a blade 15 for around 2 year and 3 months now - starting to notice a slight battery bloat as well as overheating. Any advice on how to keep temperatures low and also if you've had to clean out the fans and swap batteries? Do you also use a laptop stand or a cooling pad?
@@antimatics759 the vast majority of the time I use this thing it is plugged in with a cooling pad / stand I have cleaned the fans once, but they are definitely do for another one - I have honestly not done too much to maintain the thing

I really want to see the performance numbers from these RTX 4000 laptop series cards. Nvidia has been screwing up desktop performance big time with the increase in price... wondering about the laptop. When would the benchmarks be available Dave? :) Can't wait for your next video! The fully specced 4090 laptop is gonna be at least $4000 no question.

I bought a brand new razorblade stealth back in like 2016 and by December 2017 the combination of the fans vibration and the heat had melted all of the bumpers off and destroyed the rivets on the screws on the bottom side of the chassis… literally is hanging on by a thread these days. By 2018 the touch screen started glitching and started flashing random rbg pixels across the display frequently. Worst computer I’ve ever purchased, all because of how thin it was.

Word! I hate how nowadays you can't find a laptop with a decent keyboard anymore. Meaning full size arrow keys and numpad. Only exception to this seems to be the Lenovo legion series, but only the 7 is big enough to utilize the QHD screen resolution.

@@xruud24 I mean that QHD is more comfortable to work on if your screen is physically large enough. For what I do I run into the limitations of FHD and could use a bit more resolution but I certainly don't need (or want) 4K. The Lenovo 5 looks small to have a QHD screen. 16-18" screen with QHD, keyboard with numpad and full size arrow keys, good specs and battery life (and if I would go overboard I'd also make it a convertible with Wacom type screen like the yoga series, fingerprint sensor and gyroscope so it has stuff like autorotate screen) and Linux support. I use an older Acer with Arch and KDE plasma, and an old yoga on the go with Ubuntu and Gnome. I'm getting used to touch and pen input on the yoga, but still need the full keyboard and bigger screen+QHD. 16 or 17" Yoga with those and AMD Ryzen 8 series and RDNA4 graphics, and I wouldn't need another laptop for 10+ years.

I have an ROG M16 with a 12700H and 3060. Rarely have I wished it were faster, but I wish it were bigger frequently. I wish the Blade 18 could come with lower end components to be cheaper. A 13700H and 4070 are more than enough for almost all of us on a laptop. I'd probably still play my games at FHD, I just want more real estate to see what's going on, especially in spreadsheet type work.
Why not just use another monitor?
@@KK-fi6ms Doesn't fit in a backpack, no matter how big the backpack is. And if you take a desktop monitor, you probably need a desktop keyboard as well, otherwise the ergonomics are ducked up. A large laptop might not be the most friendly for use in public, but it is still just as portable when you want to move from home, to work, to conference room, to hotel.
Hows this laptop for content creation ? mostly for 4k video editing work, if you have any experience with the same, please do share
@@imaginerd92 This laptop hasn't launched yet. But it's a large laptop with an i9, the latest NVIDIA GPUs and can be optioned with lots of RAM. So there's absolutely no reason it should be anything less than wonderful.
You can do 4K editing on an iPad - and honestly if media production is your primary concern, get a Macbook.
@@imaginerd92If you really need that 18 inch screen, go for asus strix scar 18. It will be cheaper and with better specs.
Cool laptops, these RTX4000 generation laptop GPU look promising, and the brightness and hardware privacy for the webcam are awesome. PD: Any 4K display can do 1080p native, just each 4 pixels (2x2) will show the same color, that's nothing new.
It won't double your refresh rate normally. In this case it will.
Finally the thin bezel that I've been waiting for from Razer !

My Blade 15 3070 80w had swollen battery so I had to remove it.
Lets see how this design will perform because the wattage is pretty high as well at 140-170

Because yeah, performance is great but actually, not in a trade off for 40-60 decibels.
Plus performance on battery is a thing too I guess.
Once these companies really wanna try to compete with Apple you need to address those.
I really love the power in the 16inch , especially for 3D rendering, where Apple honestly doesn‘t see land but yeah, not if the trade off is two hours battery and an airplane next to me for two hours.
Actually that is also for gaming laptops, I got a aero 15inch in the household and its so fucking loud while gaming, you can not enjoy it without any noise cancellation and damaging your ears with it.
I wait for the PS5 moment in gaming notebooks, the PS4 pro was not reasonable with noise, you couldn’t enjoy gaming with the fans so loud but the PS5 is almost silent compared to it.
That’s where gaming laptop and creator laptop need to get.
I have the exact same experience with my Aero 15X. I honestly hate it. Not to mention I had issues with the ram failing and shit like that. I started realizing gaming laptops don’t make any sense. Just get a pc for games, and a macbook for travel/work.
Thickness doesn't matter too much for me, but weight definitely does. The XPS 15 and blade 15 used to be quite pocketable. I always saw Razer laptops as powerful ultrabooks, compared to proper gaming laptops that were twice as thick. Especially the Blade stealth was a truly unique product that they decided to stop selling. I'm not happy with that new direction.
Well people wanted more battery life and better cooling and therefore more weight

My worry about these machines is battery lifespan, in 2-3 years those bad boys start to swell pretty bad and then have to go through the hassle of sending the machine to them to replace the battery, etc.
It’s not that hard changing it yourself. It’s just a single plug connecting to the motherboard.
I think they can come up with a “thin” design again if they made an AMD (ryzen 7000 nonX) version of this. Razer innovated the laptop gaming space with the thin form-factor. And they are devolving if they go thicker from here on out.
Nope. Nobody asked for gaming laptops to be as thin as these companies were making them and it was totally destroying their performance. A gaming laptop that actually has the cooling capacity to make full use of the hardware inside it is a revelation. We have been waiting for this product for years.
My God... They finally increased the height for better cooling! My old 15 inch Razor few years back had its Intel processor completely fried after leaving it overnight completing MATLAB simulations/calculations. Glad to see Razor finally did something to fix it (at least according to initial specs/benchmark numbers) and maybe I'll try out their new laptop in the next few years when my G15 needs an upgrade. (Btw, I got a full refund for my Razor thanks to Microsoft's Store extended warranty)
I own a Blade 15 2021, and I was looking forward for these new models to come out, for an upgrade; but as I use the laptop 90% to work(have a dedicated desk pc for gaming) the thing of being thicker and heavier is a deal breaker for me, even if I understand why they did it.
I've always found great the usage, design and specs on the Blades, really balanced; something that can rival with a Macbook on the Windows ecosystem side. But these two at least(may be there will be a more classic specs product coming) sadly seem to be going into a diferent direction.

I hope we see this shift back to thicker laptops expand across the industry. I loved the gradual pushing of boundaries with thinner and lighter stuff as much as the next guy but over the years I've come to the realisation that it comes second to comfort and usability. I'll gladly take back some height and weight for better temps. Also give me back my RJ45 port while we're at it...
you can see the bulk of that extra thickness is in the lid, presumably to accommodate that mini led screen
I love their new design in the blade. I prefer thicker laptops because of cooling space, more potential spaces for multiple components. They really accommodated the cooling capacity now and the chassis is lovely.
Glad to see that the 18 was able to at least keep the Razr aesthetic

I'd be interested to see (or rather, hear) the difference between last year's Blade 15/17 speakers and this year's Blade 16/18. Love my 2021 Blade 15, however the speakers (especially compared to the Blade 17) leave quite a bit to be desired!
I just love that 3:2 aspect ratio is starting to be more common. Screens are getting so good, even at lower end laptops, even with 90hz.

Since 4k is a perfect multiple of 1080p, the "dual resolution" is just a very practical trick of having 1 big pixel occupying 4 real pixels of the display.
I couldn't agree more about the thicker design. I've been saying that for years, laptops could be faster with bigger batteries if they just made them somewhat thicker. Sure, it's not as sleek but I'll take function over form for a device I use every day
You should show us their new GAN charger too. I used to have a 2021 blade 15 and switch to a legion 7i max spec just because of performances. The downside of this latter is their gigantic 300w charger. So I'm intrigued to see what razer is doing!

Had one for about 8 months and loved it. Accidentally dropped it and got and the shell got dented and screen a little scratched up. Best Buy gave a full refund and just been using the Surface Pro 8 since.
And 32 GB of RAM.
5:37 Hmm I think this stacked nvme may cause serious problems. I have experienced overheating and speed droping from 3500mb/s to 150 mb/s when transfering big files between the internal drives on both the msi ge76 and the rog m16, which have thermal pads and copper plates installed.

Finally! I'm so happy laptops are getting thicker again!
Very glad they finally made them a bit thicker, but still too thin for my liking. If you look at 2:07 you will notice that quite a bit of that increased height is "wasted" on the screen. While that was obviously neccessary it does not help with cooling at all. The actual inceased thickness on the cooling is only 2-3 mm at best. I would have wished for 24 or 25 mm. That would be the sweet spot of still reasonably thin but great cooling and somewhat quiet fans with full performance. It would be heavier of course, but still fairly portable. At least on the big Blade 18 I would have wished for a bit thicker chassis.

My Razer 14" is a beast, I've never been more satisfied by a machine than this one, never throttles, has a RTX 3060, it just works, compared to my previous machine which was a stupid memory soldered Alienware with a reversed Motherboard that you couldn't even clean if you wanted ! Razer FTW, worth every penny.
Afaik iirc, Asus did already have that dual mode switching display last year on one of their ROG laptops (I think it was the Zephyrus Duo 16)

0:59 Just an FYI: Some 2022 configurations of the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 had a similar technology on the screen. It just wasn't widely available.
My main interest is the battery life for normal use on the Blade 16. Battery is the biggest flaw on my current Blade 15” 2019
Hopefully that added thickness also translates to better speaker performance
