      It does have a catch tho. By making it like this and not a "standard" screwy way it means that unless you tear it down completely the PS5 is only compatible with Sony specific disc drives which will be far more expensive than regulars on the market. Although how often does the disc drive break tho? Wouldn't worry too much.

      IMO the similar thermal performance within a smaller chassis is due to the fact that the original PS5 had a 7nm chip and the thermal design was apt for that. When Sony refreshed it with a 6nm die, they found extra thermal headroom which they were able to remove in PS5 Slim while having similar performance, temps and power consumption.

    I kinda think Sony went with the new split design because the disc drive add-on probably comes with a shell piece to match when purchased separately, and they wanted to cut the cost of the plastic shell. The packaging for an add-on disc drive that required a whole side plate would have been a fair bit bigger. The 7nm and 6nm are basically the same, where the "shrinking" is done by just getting better at making the 7nm, but the 5nm is another step in shrinking so the design for the chip has to be done again. They probably could do it, it should be easier to re-design existing 7nm chip to 5nm than to make 5nm chip from scratch, but it still takes engineering and new deals with AMD. It's really not worth it, especially if you want to keep the cost down since 6nm is cheaper than 5nm as well.

      this is really good actually they managed to reduce power consumption in the 1200 series and now have reduced the the overall size, they have managed to get a process where the power consumption and body size are independant to each other. they can eventually release a newer version of this being even light when the rest of the industry stops hogging the 3-5 nm chips, there is very likely not enough capacity to accomodate PS5's needs on those processes.

      Good theory, similar to how some gaming laptops can get away with less fans even when pulling more power than other laptops, due to how the air flows through the system.
      Adding mire fans does not necessarily mean the system will be cooler if the extra air is not going anywhere useful, if you can perfectly control that airflow you may be able to add less fans.
      It seems to me that due to the console being skinner (not so much smaller but less thickness), this means the air is forced through the system a bit more. This will cool the system down about the same degree in temperature as the system rose due to being shrunk (I am not sure how to type that but you get my point hopefully).
      - Afterall, Sony designed this so they probably took the thickness into account and found a sweet-spot where it looks decent but also helps the cooling.

    The half-gloss/half-matte look is something Sony has been doing since late PS2 Slim revisions. So it's kind of a design throwback.
    One thing to keep in mind for power draw testing is that the way PS5 does it's clocks, it's actually aiming for iso-work at a set draw point, it's possible that instead of getting less draw, a newer revision would just have more headroom to keep higher clocks.

    Can’t wait to get these in for repairs lol. Definitely love the slightly easier access to the SSD slot.

    I do wonder if there is really anything we're losing with the slim. Stuff like heating, performance and if the cheaper material will hold up in years to come

    • @shahgyy
      @shahgyy Před 6 měsíci +15

      Yeah probably made cheaper. Also the disk drive has drm so you're getting a worse disk drive

      @@sanfury the fact that is has drm is why its worse. you have to be connected to sonys servers... have an internet connection at first to get the disk drive to work. No Bueno. Not good for preservation of games

    I've never cared about aesthetics too much when it comes to electronics... until i saw the ps5. I usually wait a few years before upgrading consoles anyways and was kind of holding out for the slim model/ price to go down a tad. Not going to lie Sony caught me off guard with that gloss and plastic feet combo. As far as im aware this is the only console to not be stable on its side without assistance. Idk at least its not literally 10lbs

    The reason the PS5 can be slimmed without die shrink is because it already had a die shrink from 7nm to 6nm. But didn't have a design change. This is just the console design catching up to the process node. In addition the size and cooling of the og PS5 was overkill for noise and heat dissipation

    I think it looks pretty good and agree it matches the controller design. The original model I did not like in pictures/videos but seeing it in person I really changed my mind and found it to be quite a nice machine.
