- It's baaaack! It's been a long time since I've made a foreign disc video, but I decided to bring it back for the PS5 slim. For the nostalgia. I also decided to try some other experiments with the removable disc drive... since that's a new thing. Hope you enjoy this blast to the past!

This whole disc drive is crazy. Never would imagine a disc drive needing to be connected to the internet.
At first when i heard i thought it was bad for game console perservation but if you gonna think about it it just makes sense because you need the software/firmwire to remarry the disc drive to the console just like on PS3 and PS4 you cant just swap the disc drives you need to remarry them its just like the drivers for peripherals or gpu on PC
I think Sony did a great job for the modular disc drive but they need to do an offline tool to remarry the drive just like their firmwires on PS3, PS4 and PS5 you can install it without an internet if you download the file and put it on and flashdrive then put the flashdrive on your console then install i think that is the solution for it Sony is gonna find a fix for that in the future dont worry

@@dxtremecaliber i was really angry when i found out a disc drive had to connect to the internet, it threw me back to the xbox one's launch. but now that you've explained it, it makes much more sense. i doubt sony won't make an offline disc remarrying tool, it would probably take five minutes, and would make the slim just that little bit better.

There is still a high chance the data will be corrupted by disconnecting the disk drive like that. I reckon if you disconnected it then immediately unplugged the PS5 it would corrupt and data left in the RAM.
if the ps5 is turned off (not sleep) or unplugged without any power there is no data left in the ram anyway so no corruption can occour other than faulty game files which nowadays even consoles verify the data after copy, that means if u reuplug and continue the install / download it checks where it stopped & verify the last couple gibabyte or so, also a reason why ur console wont start the copy/download immediately - tho it still can happen but very very rare, maybe if u unplug - insta replug & unplug over and over again

Nah, for him these few loses will turn into profit. But I'm sure you've realized that... 🙂 Appreciate Jacob's experiments tho, never know what you're gonna learn / see lol. Its funny although, I guess I just watch these videos because I miss my consoles a smidge. I only have a custom built PC now, but I do miss consoles always a few friends who don't have PCs + of course the Sony exclusives. I was kinda looking forward to Wolverine, hopefully it can come to PC someday in the next few years....

I love these sorts of videos... And like you said, seeing those videos of stuff like "This is an XBOX game, please insert the disc in an XBOX console" and whatnot were always weirdly fascinating

Wii U discs are actually pretty unique. Even shaped a lil different on the edges if you look closely. And i think it is a form of Blu Ray
Wii U discs are essentially identical to Blu-ray Discs with minor modifications so Nintendo didnt have to pay the Blu-ray Disc Association for every disc printed, I believe the modifications are that it uses an irregular file system , the thickness is different and a smoothing technique is used on the rim of the disc.

I remember back in 2016 when I bought the Fallout Anthology collection and I was put off that I had to set up a Steam account, as I didn't have stable home Internet back in those days. I've gotten used to software DRM since then, but I am beyond pissed at the recent rise in HARDWARE BASED DRM. From blacklisted cell phones to blacklisted PS5 consoles to DISK DRIVES?!?

Thanks for the video's Jacob. Question for you from the video, at one point it was asking you to change the region coding of the drive. Is this a function that I can access off the dashboard or is it just accessible only when I put in say a region B or C Blu-ray ( I have a bunch of region locked Blu's in storage). If this is possible to make it a region different system, how would I be able to do it? Thanks
Here's an experiment regarding the DVD region. Is the DVD region tied to the disc drive or the console?

Fun fact, the video on the OG Xbox discs is a video of one of the planned original boot screens.

Instant trip back. The website still works and it takes you to the storefront. Now its just an adult version of walking through the book truck and grabbing as much as you can to get close to what you were given to buy.

Curious ?, have you tried game detection of games in their digital or streamable back-compat list? If so, what were your results?
If you change the region of the discdrive will it be specific for that seperate discdrive or is it the entire console? Lets say you want one discdrive for europe region games and one for usa. Please test that out by swaping the discdrives back and forth.

Do you have to authenticate if you have a drive plugged in, remove it the correct way and then reinstall the same drive? It be crazy if you have to do that everything you unplug a drive

My question is in the last video when you first turned on that PS five did you still have to register that disc drive? Because if so, that means now that you have to have an Internet connection when you first set up your PlayStation 5? Kinda like they all are slim models out of the box until you register the drive, even if it comes with one?

The reason why the ps1 disc wasn't exactly reading correctly is probably because the ps1 used CD's to store games not DVD's
Yeah I noticed that too... The disc will pull in and level as it goes... I kinda think it's cool.
Curious fact: the ps4’ and the ps5’ optical drives lack the IR laser needed for CDs, since the ps1 game is a CD, not a DVD or blu-ray it just thinks the disc it’s damaged and tries again, when it’s in fact incapable of reading it. They just have the red and blue-violet lasers for DVDs and blu-rays respectively.

I’m curious, I know Liquid Metal on the OG PS5 had some issues, though not concrete unless it was taken apart I guess, but would the “Slim” have the same issues?
Cause I need space and having it vertical would probably save some space, but right now I have my OG PS5 horizontal.
I don’t even know of any cases where it was a problem for anyone. Outside of one article
It struggled with the ps1 game because PS1 games are CD, and ps4 and 5 don’t support CDs of any kind, even music CDs, because they don’t have the IR laser inside, Blu Rays, DVDs, and CDs all use different wavelengths. PS4 and 5 only support blu ray for games and movies, and dvd for movies.
Mr Technology expert has spoken. Yup, don’t wanna forget about the wavelengths and lasers etc.

moving a spinning drive will very easily scratch your disc on the laser. put a bike wheel in both hands and spin it.
lol yeah I wasn’t even thinking about the disc being in there spinning while I moved it. I’ve moved consoles plenty of times with discs in them, but they’re always off

It's really anticonsumer to not have backwards compatibility. I can run PS1 games on the weakest of PCs.
It hardly seems anticonsumer to not have backwards compatibility, more like just a missed opportunity. Even if they did offer it, it would just load up a PS1 emulator anyway. It could probably emulate PS2 as well, but PS3 would be very difficult to do; at that point, just keep your PS3 around and you can still play your PS1 and PS2 games no problem

Xbox isn't perfect but atleast they got the backwards compatability right. I mean I can play Xbox, 360 and One games on my series X. Sony really has no excuse and did it out of greed.

When you went to put that GameCube disc in I was worried because I am old enough to remember when 3” CD singles were a brief thing they were the same size and you could not to put those in slot loading drives because they would get stuck. 😮

You can move a PS4 with the disc in and nothing happens that's an Xbox that scratches up the disc I move my PlayStation 4 while it's on all the time never had a scratch on any of my discs

You won't risk changing the region code but you will unplug the disc drive while it's running and you will flip the console around while it's reading a disc lol

Basically what happened was that my brother just brought the ps4 to our home to download the fifa 22
Then suddenly converter went off and it i think damaged the hard drive i don't if the power supply is working well or not, so my parents told me well good no games anymore 😅

back on the xbox 360, if I put in a damaged game it would see it as a DVD, and just play a video of the xbox splash-sceen instead of playing the actual game. This upset me so much as a kid!
I remember back in the Xbox and ps2 days when an Xbox game in a ps2 would display the Xbox loading screen (before then going to another screen and telling you that you can’t play the game)

I would never remove hardware while its switched on,Thats one way to mess up the hardware doing that,Part from that,The Playstation 5 will load up Playstation 4 games,Wont loads up Any other Playstation games,Wont risk putting a PSP disk in to the drive,End up jamming the disk drive doing that,Less likely it load up and X BOX game,The format on the disk be copied in a complete different format to be compatible for the XBOX disk drive,Less likely think it load up gamecube game,Not compatible for the Playstation,The gamecube disk drive only be able to read the data in that format,Same to the Nintendo Wii disk,It wont load up any of them disks,£1000 bet they wont work
