      At some point, whether it be AI, more power, or better optimization, something has to improve for PC gaming on laptops. As someone who has bought both a 4090 laptop as well as a Steam Deck, I think it's weird that there isn't something that tries to strike a good balance between the two extremes. I wish there was a PC that gets reasonable gaming performance (like low to medium at 1080/1440p) while having reasonable thermals and battery life. I don't know why gamers are so hostile to the idea that true mobile gaming should be possible on the Windows platform. All I want is to be able to start and finish a game of Civilization V on battery, like I can on my 14" MacBook Pro. Macs have a pitiful gaming library, but when they do run a game, they play fine on battery. If AI helps us get there for Windows, I'd really appreciate it.

      Nah, AMD would then start taking market share because Nvidia knows people buy their hardware for most power etc overall across multiple things such as graphic designing and all sorts. But they may release a lower range GPU products with DLSS marketing. But still won't stop the powerhouses.

      Do you think he's saying anything he doesn't believe though? Which bits don't you agree with? I still avoid using DLSS whenever I can get the frame rate I want without it, but I have to admit it now looks pretty decent in most games. I'm still not sold on Frame Gen though, it's only good if you have a high enough frame rate to not need it, thus making it pointless.

    • @tabalugadragon3555
      @tabalugadragon3555 Před 5 měsíci +34

      @@hokayson6518 I don't agree with naming laptop GPUs one tier above their actual counterparts in desktops. Laptop 4070 actually has 4060 ti specs, laptop 4080 has(mostly) desktop 4070 ti specs, laptop 4090 has desktop 4080 specs(even the same core count and memory).
      Why not name them the same? Because Nvidia wants people to think the laptop GPUs still have the same specs as the deskop ones like in the time of 1000 and 2000 series, where they were named the same and had the same specifications. This is just dishonest marketing and Dave just keeps praising them.
      Laptop 4070, unlike the desktop version doesn't have nearly enough video memory to be future proof, yet Dave praises frame generation which actually needs *even more* vram for activation. Nvidia wants planned obsolesense on laptops to be way faster on laptops than on desktops(keep in mind unlike desktops, you can't just upgrade a GPU, you have to buy a whole new laptop) and Dave seems to be perfectly fine with it, mentioning how great low end GPUs are right now despite having terribly longevity and not being future proof at all. Nvidia *knows* that those who buy them will have to upgrade soon.

    • @hokayson6518
      @hokayson6518 Před 5 měsíci +4

      @@tabalugadragon3555 Oh I fully agree the Nvidia laptop GPU naming is total BS! I've argued the same thing many times myself. I'm less with you on the longevity thing though. You can always turn down settings to get VRAM requirements down, & the GPUs in laptops will only play AAA stuff at decent frame rates for a few years anyway. Those who care about the very latest AAA games running with high textures can upgrade, those who don't care so much about that can turn settings down. I would rather more VRAM pretty much across the board with most Nvidia GPUs, but I don't think it's as big a deal as people make it out to be.

    • @tabalugadragon3555
      @tabalugadragon3555 Před 5 měsíci +6

      @@hokayson6518 I disagree. High end GPUs can last for a very long time. Laptop 1070 still holds up well despite being a 7 year old GPU. If desktop 4070 was actually in laptops it would have decent longevity. 16GB 4060 ti? even higher longevity, especially if you only game at 1080p where 128 bit memory bus doesn't matter.
      Again, laptops have GPUs soldered so you can't just slap another GPU in it and have to replace a whole device, which is both costly and non-environmentally friendly. My i7 8750h in my current laptop would handle RTX 4060 just fine, but because my GTX 1050 is soldered, I can't replace it and need to buy a new laptop.

      What do you mean it’s not in their plans? The Nintendo Switch has sold 132 million times, bringing an affordable console with tons of games to a very large number of people. It’s cheaper and better supported than Steam Deck. The Switch is powered by Nvidia.
      More importantly, Switch 2 is launching sometime in the next 6 to 12 months, and it will be bringing a huge leap in performance to the Switch platform, powered by much newer Nvidia hardware that will absolutely support DLSS.
      Nvidia is certainly looking to profit from high end gaming as much as they can, but it’s hard to deny the impact they’ve had on making gaming cheaper and more widespread. They have done far more than the Steam Deck has done up to this point.

      @TealJosh Před 5 měsíci +4

      What you are asking is two edged sword. While non-native rendering is a weird compromise, so that a game can even reach 60fps... It's in nearly direct opposition to game devs spending thousands of hours placing fake lighting around the maps to just barely light the worlds. Why do that when you can path trace couple bounces and DLSS the performance drop away, like literally. Why have thousands of fake light sources in a game world, when you can have the Sun/Moon + few torches with couple path raced light ray bounces.

    • @mlodin84
      @mlodin84 Před 5 měsíci +16

      @@TealJosh I'm talking about upscaling, not raytracing. So far there is no game that requires DLSS ray reconstruction, they have to spend thousands of hours placing fake lighting anyway. Especially since DLSS and DLSS ray reconstruction are not open source and NVidia exclusive.
      If they optimize for mid-range hardware to hit 60fps on native resolution with high (not ultra) settings (like it was until now), then mid-range hardware could probably have a smooth 120fps experience using upscaling. Also low-end hardware might be able to hit 60 fps using upscaling.

Ampere was a great price to performance improvement but ofc nvidia couldn't give peasants who can't spend $1500 on a gpu the necessary 2GB memory modules that the 3090 got so instead we ran out of vram not raw performance that generation. Isn't that just great? Now this time we finally get those 2GB memory modules but with half the bus width meaning half the memory chips too so we not only get barely any raw performance improvement seeing core counts went backwards, but no extra vram and significantly less memory bandwidth on top of that too. Late stage capitalism at its finest, they literally have 0 incentive to do anything but what makes them the most money and this is what happens as a result of that

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's because you misunderstand.
      It is NOT rendering new frames.
      It is basically using the next-fame and the previous frame, and comparing them against each other. And using certain algorithms to change and make a new middle frame. Your screen at this point hasn't displayed either of the three frames yet. It is displaying a fourth previous frame, because these are all in a queue. There is a slight performance drop because of this, so you're actually getting LOWER frame-rates of the native ones. You can test that out and tell by the latency, it has a noticeable drop.
      The technology is 1 Year old at this point, and it hasn't gotten better. But within the next 3 Years it should improve. But it still is reliant on having solid native performance first.
      Or in other words, the hardware should be pumping out 1440p/90fps/Very High Settings.... and using these AI Tools, it should be able to bump them up into 2160p/120fps/Ultra Settings. The problem is that the AI isn't quiet there yet, AND we are NOT getting that level of native performance, it is closer to 1200p/50fps/Very High. So basically it is that Nvidia's hardware is SLOW but they insist on charging MORE money for it. They are relying on their industry connections, and marketing to accomplish this up-selling tactic. It's not working as we are seeing the lowest rates of PC Gaming in the past 20 Years.
      People are turning to console gaming instead, and it's why Sony has been bold enough to raise its prices across the board, whilst Microsoft starts to water down their (previously) excellent Cloud Gaming service. It's just less competition. The best year of gaming was 2010 (most competition), and the (least competition) worst year seems to be 2022.

      But if a laptop GPU is called "4070" and costs 1500+ dollars I expect it to have 12GB of vram just like the desktop version. If they wanted to sell it for 4060 ti price they'd call it a 4060 ti.
      The least they could do is provide 4070m with 16GB just like desktop 4060 ti option, but they didn't do even that.
      As for "low end laptops always had low vram" my 1050 has 4GB, for 6 years ago, that was a decent amount and double of what desktop 1050 had, so no, not always.

    DLSS and frame generation are one of the more promising use cases of AI right now. Generative AI however is muddled with moral issues where it takes artist's work without their permission to train their AI models, and then companies will likely fire/ hire less artists to work on games in the future.

I sometimes try to get her to play with me, so today I saw cold war was on sale (bought mw3 last night). Originally, I was going to buy it on the ps4, then I realized I would have to get PS plus. Then I realized she had the laptop.... surprisingly with DLSS at all medium settings, no ray tracing, cold war ran above 60fps. On all low settings it ran around 90. I praised DLSS at that moment, though I have always been a fan.

    I feel like this ai gen crutch will catch up to the devloper eventually. Too much weight leaning on that crutch will eventually lead it to give out one way or another. For example when a game is severely cpu limitied. Doesnt matter how much frame gen/upscaling you try to throw at it. Gains would be pretty small. Now if a game is optimized well and you want to go even further with ai sure thats fine. That scenario would be great for lower spec machines and portable.

      It's funny you use CPU limitation as an example, when Nvidia's frame generation is explicitly benefiting performance in CPU-limited scenarios. The performance improvement on weaker CPUs is where it's most appreciated. So I'm not sure you understand the tech at all.

    These technologies are cool and stuff, but there are some drawbacks I have observed. With DLSS2, game developers are now relying on upscaling. So, instead of focusing on running games well at native, it's in their mindset now that they have upscaling. So, they suggest ridiculous minimal requirements, were to run a game at 1080p30 you have to turn on upscaling at performance . This just makes absolutely no sense. Another thing is that upscaling / frame generation only work well on mid to high tier graphics cards, because DLSS2 upscales well from 1080/1440p, but if you target resolution is 1080p it's just bad. Similarly, as Dave mentioned, DLSS3 works well only with decent enough framerate. So, you need to have at least 50-60 fps with native/DLSS2.

    @LastGreyWolf Před 5 měsíci +29

    Oh man, two disappointing sponsored videos today (first Digital Foundry and now Dave2D), both damaging the reputation of their authors.
    First of all - upscaling still doesn't look very good in 1080p. There is simply a small number of pixels to reconstruct the image from, and no matter how good the technology gets, this is a hard limitation (though I admit that the latest DLSS versions certainly got rid of the most annoying shimmering and flickers).
    Second of all - unfortunately, going down the AI rabbit hole got us exactly where many feared it would. The developers got lazy with optimization and just slapt a DLSS/FSR requirement on 1080p/60FPS configs. It's so ridiculous that now you can see a system req. for 1080p/low and find out it's only 60FPS with DLSS/FSR enabled. For sometimes even mid-range 30series card. That's not progress, that is either blatant laziness, or a paid push from (let's be honest, mostly nvidia) GPU manufacturers to buy even more expensive card.. like 40series, which is a complete joke/s*it in price/perf. comparison until like 4080.
    Now, don't get me wrong, the AI can be useful - for NPC's, and many more things. But the way we're heading now, it's not a very good direction for us customers. And no paid videos will change that.
