Lord Gaben does it again
It's time to finally get a steam deck
Awesome As Always Dave
does Base model has same internal as Mid and Top internal aside only screen difference ?
The 2 part case also makes it so when you have a shell that makes the steam deck bigger, you still have a carrying case that fits it
Long Life to Lord Gaben
I would never have expected a refresh so soon but this new version looks fantastic. Keeping the price the same too is a massive W!
It was obvious it was coming out. The previous gen was always out of stock, then all of a sudden in stock and they had a sale on it. Now they sold it to all those suckers they release the updated version.
@@ahmadmohamad6384 I got mine at launch so I've not had a look at stock since then, It's great to see they're selling the original versions at a discount but they're still a great piece of tech
@@ahmadmohamad6384 I am one of those suckers whose steamdeck arrived last week. And I am RAGING as this happened to me when I did my PC 3 years ago. Bought top end AMD GPU and CPU, and Literally a week after complete new line up release.
IM NOT SALTY, wait I AM SALTY AARRRGGGHHH
Those who bought it are not really suckers because they technically got the more affordable model that they wanted immediately.@@ahmadmohamad6384
not even just staying the same, technically there was a price cut seeing the storage bump in each tier. @@VaporSprite
The tiers actually moved one step up. The base model was 64, mid was 256, and the highest was 512. Therefore the prices actually dropped with the upgrade! This actually makes Dave's point in the end even more important.
I feel better for not buying in right away....
But my excuse is and always has been the crazy backlog I have on the switch- also that's a lighter portable
@@Matanumi you can play switch games on steam deck. I don't use my switch anymore. I mainly use it to transfer games.
@@soullesspancake7405yes you can buy it’s not a exact replica. The switch is still better for portability, the games he already has. The noise, the battery etc. the performance alone doesn’t pursvae to change. ( sorry for bad English )
@@dio8070 your English is pretty good. you can tdp limit to reduce energy consumption and fan noise. I get better battery on my deck than I do on the switch. I ran diablo 3 on the switch..after playing for like and hr I can cook an egg on the back 😂.
I tested the batteries with dead cells. Super light game. I got about 1.5 -2 hrs more on the deck. But steam deck is bigger in physical size.especially with the hard case.
The Nand Chip prices have gone down so much between the release of the original Steam Deck and now, that putting more flash storage into the refresh model isn't going to make the production any more expensive.
Unbelievable respect to all the team members of Valve that made this possible. Incredible.
It's not that crazy lmaoo calm down buddy

I also thing is not a big deal hahaha. I mean it’s appreciated but have you seen the competition of the steam deck? There are newer and better consoles like the crazy Lenovo one, if steam didn’t do this they could lose a big competitive advantage to the crazy competition they have even tho they’re more expensive they also offer more.
Yeah I actually hate this. Purchased the most expensive model for nothing since now there's a newer version I didn't get 😢
This just makes me more excited for the eventual Steam Deck 2. This is what they did with just a quick refresh, a whole new iteration will be amazing.
EXACTLY
removable joy cons is what i would want! but its fine if they dont,i really like the one x player
as long as they can make it much lighter, otherwise it's only really useful docked
@@gameclips5734 I love it. I usually play while lying down on the bed, and I use a support so that my hands don't go numb.
@@galaxyportablegamer the problem is joycons are crappy ergonomicallyin both modes, while valve does good ergonomics
So according to Valve, this is the definitive Steam Deck 1.0.
Everything that they ever wanted it to be at its launch is in here. This is probably why the price didn't increase.
EDIT: If you're wondering where's my source, IGN uploaded a YT video titled: Valve on Why Steam Deck OLED Is The Definitive Version
Just look it up.
You actually get way more for the price at every tier now.
@@GhostAcez Its not always given, look at GPU prices or console prices..
The OG Steam Deck was a beta device, the OLED is the real device
@@darthraider450so the ROG Ally is a beta because it has not an oled? The reason was to have a low price device to launch it. First steam deck is still better in user experience than a lot of its bigger competitors, even with the old display.
@@AtrusDesignyeah rog ally is still a beta. It was a messy launch and they still have a lot to fix.
Summary from multiple videos I've watched:
- Larger, now OLED screen (smaller bezels)
- Brighter screen (1000 nits vs 400 nits)
- HDR screen (110% P3 color gamut vs old 60%)
- 90Hz (vs old 60Hz. Can display 30 more FPS for a smoother viewing experience)
- Better touch responsiveness (180Hz touch polling rate)
- < 0.1 ms response time
- Dual ambient light sensors (for better auto brightness)
- new 50Wh battery (upgraded from 40Wh. 30-50% more battery life)
- Faster charging
- Longer charging cable (2.5m vs 1.5m)
- Easier to repair
- Nicer case with the terabyte premium models
- Wi-Fi 6E
- Better thermals (bigger heat sink & fan. Quieter & cooler)
- HD haptics
- Dedicated Bluetooth 5.3 antenna for better connectivity with other devices (also supports connecting more)
- Added support for wake from Bluetooth controller
- Faster RAM
- Redesigned custom AMD chip to be 6nm instead of 7nm (more power efficient)
- Joysticks are more grippy
- Shoulder buttons redesigned to be more durable & less prone to damage from drops- wish I had that...
- 30 grams lighter
- Even better speakers (new DSP chip to help improve sound quality & clarity)
- Still compatible with old 3rd party accessories
Is the SoC faster than the original?
Any idea if the screen supports VRR?
As far as I read, the old screen had 400, not 600 nits. The new one has 600 for SDR, and 1000 for HDR highlights.
@@luziferius3687thats correct
@@markaznar1979no, the SoC is not faster, but it is smaller hence it produce less heat and consumes less battery, but it has faster ram that nets from 3 to 7 more fps based on the many reviews i’ve seen so far. (Old speed: 5500 Mt/s, New speed: 6400 Mt/s)
I watched like 10 reviews so far, this review shows much more and went into many details that other reviewers didn’t go through, best one so far
Yeah the Verge’s review was kinda lackluster, I watched about 4 different ones and this one was the best. I wish they gave Cryobyte33 one day one.
Bro he didn't even acknowledge the base model now having 4x the storage as before, which is amazing.
Dave2d is the GOAT
I’m buying this instead of a PS5
Good call tbh I might sell my ps5 to put money towards a steam deck myself
Don’t do it, it’s already outdated. It barely plays triple A games at 30 fps. You’re better off with a ps5.
Honestly, I ended up getting a PS5. I still want a steam deck as well though!
@@protodg6567 ps5 also barely plays AAA games at 30 fps lmao

Original $399 was 64GB so now it’s upgraded and refreshed and 256GB for $399. It’s definitely a win.
Keep in mind the 256 version is actually the old spec, not upgraded at all. Only the oled versions get the other upgrades as well.
Yeah that's dope! I don't think Dave mentioned this at all, and that's a gigantic development! 😮

@@finraziel Yea I noticed that when I went to the page. Makes it less of a crazy deal for sure.
They're discontinuing the 64gb and the 512 gb models. There's a drop down in price if you wanna grab one till stocks last.....the old 256gb is now the lowest eir model... 512gb OLED and 1TB OLED
Love your reviews lately. The dual camera is a unique take, feels very engaging without extra transitions and animations lol.
I'm so glad they did this! It's literally everything we were asking for.
I got my Steam Deck a few months ago, and I'm outside the supported regions, so I'd imagine third party sellers are gonna price hike these before they get reasonable, so I don't regret getting it when I did at all. But it does make me really excited for Steam Deck 2! And it also shows that the Steam Deck as a whole is doing pretty well for them to be able to do this.
Third party sellers will definitely capitalize on limited stocks for months, assuming demand is still high and Steam Deck stop entering even more countries officially.
Hey steam deck 2 are hinted prob 2025, i think its perfect time to get the new iteration

They took every shortcoming and developed it to leave no room for envy about the competition. Cannot wait to get one.
Still need anticheat support for linux so you can play FPS games
@@officerminiwheats This is not something Steam can force other developers to implement.

This is very cool. I think the longer the deck is around, the more hardware manufacturers will bend to help develop improvements for the system, and in turn other handhelds will get better as well.
Fingers crossed for a juiced up Nintendo Switch 2!
I'm not willing to upgrade yet but man, I'm jealous of the people who don't already have a Steam Deck. The base model is already amazing. These upgrades give it a huge bump in my eyes. I play games mostly handheld so the Switch OLED was a great upgrade for me. The OLED Deck and refinements of the base model is super cool. Totally unexpected too!
Same. Just bought mine during the summer sale and now kinda bummed I didn’t wait but I still love mine!
@artemis_lena same I feel kinda burned. That's messed up they said they aren't coming out another one for years.
I'm also currently in a situation where I'm telling myself it's not yet time to upgrade, I should just keep rocking with my o.g. 512 GB model until the true Steam Deck 2 comes out, but at the same time I really really really want the Steam Deck OLED... It's going to take a lot of willpower to stop myself from buying it.
Hey Dave, base Steam Deck was not 256 GB. It was 64 GB of eMMC storage. Trick is, todays base model is actually previous mid model. They basically continue to manufacture previous mid model, with same APU, same battery, same smaller fan, same LCD but are now selling it as base model. Also, there was not 1TB option previously. Former lineup was 64GB eMMC, 256 SSD and 512 SSD. So base is now 256 SSD with older hardware, mid is 512GB with OLED, bigger battery, larger fan and better more efficient APU and flagship is 1TB
Indeed
Woah 😳🤯
I only see the LCD model listed as 256GB base model and OLED only at 512GB and 1TB.
@@bobbypaycheque Yes, thats correct. Previous base model was 64GB eMMC. Current base model is same as previous mid tier model.

The amount of work they did to the cooling because of the extra internal space from the screen was impressive to hear. I don't recall hearing nintendo do anything like that with their oled version.
It is because the switch doesn't generate much heat, it is a quite an underclocked chip even docked, and is arm, so the heat is still a lot lower compared the the steam deck oled.
@@oo--7714not just because it's arm, but because it's a 2015 design that they never bothered to upgrade that people still keep buying for some reason.
@ because it's a 2015 design (2 years before the switch came out)
The ps4 was using an even older design when it came out. Even the steam deck is using a pretty old design.
The thing was only out of reservation earlier this year and rdna 2 came out in 2020.
@@divyjotsingh3879 people keep buying it because it has a huge selection of games and is very convenient, and suitable for the whole family. It’s got some great games for local coop, too, like smash brothers and Mario kart. Unique multiplayers like Splatoon 3.
Great first party titles even this year with TOTK being highly successful, followed by some excellent remasters and one of the best 2d games in Mario wonder.
Lots of deals and sales on the digital shop.
It’s currently the 3 rd best selling console ever. That’s even with the very old hardware, the joy con drift and Nintendo first party titles not losing their high prices. It’s just an excellent system where the benefits vastly outweigh the negatives.
You may not need it at all. You may have it and have stopped using for the steam deck (which is fantastic). But the majority are still loving the switch and playing it.
@@divyjotsingh3879The X1 is more powerful than what people make it out to be. It took a while for developers to get used to, but games like Bayonetta 3, Doom Eternal, The Witcher 3, Nier Automata, TOTK, Dragon Quest 11, Alien Isolation, Dying Light and to an extent Persona 5 Royal, goes to show just how flexible the chipset is.
It isn’t ideal that Nintendo has stuck with the X1 for almost 7 years, but it is hardly a big issue when it comes to development and overall performance. The games mentioned ran very well. The Witcher 3 stands out the most at a consistent 30fps which is the same performance as PS4 and the Xbox One.
So, from Nintendo’s point of view, why would they upgrade the system when devs are still finding a way and the Switch always selling so well on the monthly basis?
Thank you for covering the difference between the anti glare and normal display. I’m Oled gloss panel for life I refuse to purchase anti glare displays. I always feel the colors get muted. Never bought the og deck and with these upgrades I will now own one.

Loving Valve even more. They really listen to their customers. I don’t feel this new version is a cash grab since it’s just a slight price increase.
They don’t really listen to their customers. Otherwise they would have made Half Life 3 a decade ago and not abandoned every hardware they’ve ever made up until Steam Deck. It is a very minor thing and not at all important, but I liked how the inside of the new model is colour coded and cleaner in look compared to the older model. I am sorry I get drawn to aesthetics quite often. If you use a transparent back cover, it would give out an interesting look to the SD.
Super hyped for the OLED but also glad the haptics and the bumpers have been improved as well. The bumpers on my OG deck are definitely one of my first complaints.
I'm sure Valve's refresh was also motivated by monetary gain. There's a lot more competition in the handheld space since they originally launched the Steam Deck.
Yeah I think a better phrasing would be that Sony focused on reducing costs. That PS5 “refresh” is cheaply made and looks like it, and insultingly enough they even raised prices for it. Granted, we don’t actually know the pricing of the new SD models yet cause it’s not on their website, but Valve at least brought the old 256 GB option down to $400, eliminating the pretty worthless 64 GB model.
Well obviously
who cares if they motivated by money? At the end of the day, we got a better steam deck.

I’m planning to buy on June or later, thank you so much for your review, it was very insightful
In my opinion, the biggest reason Sony and Valves business strategies are so divergent (at least with respect to PS5 and Steam Deck) is because one company is publicly traded - and therefore must grow indefinitely, while the other is privately held. Valve doesn’t need to concern itself with infinitely growth and appeasing investors. They just need to focus on maintaining their financial viability. It’s the same reason why businesses like In-n-out have been able to keep wages above average the national average, maintain good food quality, and don’t feel the need to constantly open new restaurants. It’s because they’re not accountable to shareholders.
Perfectly summed up. And I do think the chip change made by AMD for ps5 is probably gonna reserve to Pro version. There's one thing I could say for the ps5 refresh. At least it's the same price as the older model(499usd), if we look at Amazon US at least. In my country ps5 old model is 700 usd

Even though the Ally is superior in perfomance...OLED, amazing OS and usability and the better battery - the SD is the best handheld PC hands down right now. Valve should put an oculink port simular to what rog allly has. This way people could use and extenal gpu and haver better performance when decked. For those who use the Steam deck as the main PC it would be fantastic

if no one bought the original there would be no new device so thank you
A minor update they could have done to the case that’d be great, is if it had a Velcro flap(or something) to allow you to charge the device with the case closed
I think it may be an overheating problem while in the case. That's why they did it, I remember reading something about it
I don't think it's worth upgrading if you are already comfortable with the device you have, but it's nice that it exists. It would be the one to get if I didn't already have one. Eager to see what's next.
This is actually so unfair on people like myself who literally just bought the steam deck before this was introduced.
I was researching it for ages before deciding to buy it because the articles I was reading was saying a refresh probably wouldn’t have happened for the next two years.
Not only is the oled one good, but it also makes buying the older ones better. Their prices have been lowered and especially the refurbished ones are a crazy good deal now (though only the 512gb model is available). I ordered a refurbished 512gb non-oled deck for 380€, which is about 190€ cheaper than the 512gb oled model and only 10€ more than a new 64gb non-oled model (and a decent bit cheaper than a new 256gb model).
Although the increase in screen quality is mostly insignificant to me, the increased refresh rate, slightly better performance, weaker battery adhesive and especially the improved battery life would be great to have. However, it's not worth the additional 190€ for me and being able to get the old model for this money is what finally convinved me to buy the thing.
This is not a whole new console, but it's a really great refresh.
I need to see a side by side of the Steam Deck OLED and the Legion Go. Those are my top two contenders.
This oled is great for battery life I’m sure, but the legion go still way outperforms it.
This is what the people want and need.
No way the legion is worth it compared to this
Now I don’t know what to get this new steam deck or the Legion Go.
@@aquase this is what people wanted a year ago before other handhelds arrived that perform way better. This is just a cash grab to milk the design a little longer
The best device I have seen in my life. They literally made v2 deck and greatly improved everything while lowering the price. Very nice deal.
its been a while since ive seen a vid by you but what I can say im loving the hair bro. Great video.
Dave's enthusiasm is so dang contagious. I'd watch this man review pre-chewed gum. Well done (as always), sir!
This is what a real refresh looks like.
Amazing review. Is it worth the upgrade if you have the OG one?
That new update on my LCD one really changed my mind on upgrading to OLED. I’m seeing vibrant colors where I could only see gray prior to the update.
Not convinced on losing all the OLED goodness with the anti glare etched glass. Sure it won't look as good as the barely see yourself glossy but it's worth it.
agree. and if you notice as soon as he sat it down you couldn't even tell the difference. it was only at the one specific angle. I have had the original steamdeck etched since launch, and i love it. the screen is so durable. I get zero glare anywhere. When i play with my switch oled in the house, the glare is awful with any lights on. The best part IMO about etched is that it DOES NOT SCRATCH, ever. You don't need to worry about a screen protector at all
Amazing update. I don't care about other devices that run windows. The OS is the Major part of why steamdeck is so great.
Now this really makes me want a Deck. I have the OLED switch. This will be a great addition to my handheld collection
Base 256gb at $400 is a huge win. One big reason the Steam Deck was so well loved was the price. $400 was amazing, but man oh man 64gb was bs; I couldn't even fill my 512gb micro sd half full with games, because the internal storage always got full first.
256gb is the actually gonna be enough storage if you install all your games on the micro sd card.
Huge props to Valve with this refresh and price drop.
This update is fantastic, better specs, same price. Other companies should take notes.
@Dave2D I think you didn't notice one of the other biggest updgrade: the base 400$ model now has 256GB NVMe SSD, and the 64GB EMMC option is retired now.
Awesome video, thanks for explaining every detail!
This is such a neat upgrade! I have to try and stop myself from buying one since I have the OG one 😭. Love what Valve are doing.
The thing about the etched OLED screen is interesting. I'd really love total blcks, but I almost exclusively play my deck outside, often in the summer. Not in direct sunlight, but it's still very bright outside. Could you compare how noticable the glare is outside?
I’d rather buy the highest end one with 1tb and put a screen protector on like Dave said.
@@seanlacroix Why? It's still not gonna look as good as putting a screen protector on the lower tier model. The 1tb drive is completely unneccessary. Just get an SD card, it's not a big difference for games you wanna play on a deck.
@@lgolem09l why is it still not gonna look as good? Maybe it's 1% less bright but I doubt the average person notices that. If you add an SD card to the 1TB model you'll still end up with more storage overall.
@@tvh024 yeah, but for the price of the more expensive model you can easily get the lesser model with more space by ss card. You can also get a 2tb SD card if price is no option. Storage space is nearly meaningless. And the screen is not gonna look as odd because there still is layer of light distributing material in the middle. The effect you see in that video is a lot of the light coming from the outside being redirected before hitting the original screen surface, but not all of it, otherwise the protector would have to be nontransparent. At the same time, the light coming from the deck also has to pass through that layer, and that you will not change with another layer on top at all.
@@seanlacroixthat doesn’t really fix the screen though since the screen is still etched underneath.
Welcome again to the series-
Things i see but can't afford.
Everything this reviews I can't afford
Haha maybe one day 😅
Maybe work towards increasing your paycheck ❤
Havent seen a video of you for a long time, nice new style 👍
Ahh, the back is for storing the AC adaptor! I was under the impression that it was to be used to strap your steam deck to belt, but then I thought that it was far too large in order to be useful. 😅
Thank you for addressing the anti glare coating, that’s the only aspect I’m very disappointed with if I were to choose the top tier model.
You convinced me on the $100 cheaper 512 gb model. I have the current 512 anti glare model and I will say while its nice to play in the car when there's potential for alot of sun glare the colors can seem muted. I dont want anything to dull that OLED panel and 512 GB is plenty of space for me considering I also use a 512 GB micro SD card.
I’m torn. I’ve not owned a SD yet and plan to order this OLED version next week. I really like that new carrying case that only the top tier gets but am concerned about the etched screen ruining the OLED experience. Do you think Dave is correct that if I just put a glass screen protector on it the display will look like the non etched version?
if you dont need alot of space just get the 512
@@tappersreviews4677
@@tappersreviews4677 wondering the same thing.
@@tappersreviews4677a glossy screen protector won’t fix it as it will still be extched glass underneath lol don’t choose a slim removable case over a better screen. With that 100 dollars you’ll save you can buy a 3rd party slim case. There’s a video on CZcams of a guy comparing a oled glossy screen with a etched screen with a glossy protector and it helps a little bit but it still didn’t look as vibrant or clear as the glossy one and the darks don’t look only black.
Pretty awesome upgrades! Great review! Sucks you still cannot charge while it is inside the case though...big overlook on their part again.
one thing not mentioned thought, the etched screen is so much more durable than the glossy. my original etched deck does not have one single scratch on it.
How does the anti-glare etched glass compares to the non-anti-glare etched glass OLED? Does it makes the display washed out? I want to get the 1TB Limited Edition, but I hate matte OLED screens, and I fear that this screen is going to look bad with this "coating".
You hate matte oled screens you answers your own question 😜 go with your gut and get the glossy better screen
The Steam Deck refresh is much better than I expected. I am a great fan of the Steam Deck and Steam OS and I plan to get an OLED model. Valve are an excellent company who offer real value for money and amazing software and game support. I wish Apple would be more like Valve. Apple make some great hardware, but their operating system sharp practices and extortionately priced upgrade options always make me come away feeling I have been fleeced!
Exactly! Already sold my lcd one and waiting to get the oled version…
Great video! As you know, your video has been referenced in several forms already as you were the first to address the quality issues with the etched screen. You also mention in your video that adding a glossy screen protector on the etched screen fixes the issue. This is not completely true and has caused a bit of confusion. It _alleviates_ the issues but does not truly fix it. There's no way to get the same level of contrast and black levels as the glossy version with the etched version.
I'm assuming any screen protector will suffice to battle the screen glare issue Dave's talking about?
