My First Try With Cheap Alcohol Sketch Markers

  • Are cheap alcohol sketch markers any good? To find out, I try a sketch with a set of markers at a fraction of the cost of Copics, from the brand Stationary Island. The subject I'm sketching is the front entrance to Buckingham Palace, London, where the newly crowned King Charles sits on his fancy throne.

This is brilliant. Love the way you’ve drawn the alleyway and perspective, and the guard has movement. Those markers look really good!

Thank you 🙂 I think maybe the arch under the alleyway should have been darker for more shadow, probably do that next time I draw something similar. The markers are great for the price, the cold grey ones would be even better I think. And yes I like the guard too!

Another great sketch Donald, the guardsman look spot on👍 just as a precaution, I would slip a sheet of paper under the page or remove the page from the pad when using markers just in case they do bleed through on another sketch. Why risk losing a sheet of Bristol Board when a sheet of cheap cartridge paper can protect it and be re used many times?

Thanks Graham. The guard was a surprise, wasn’t expecting him to look remotely correct 😄 Maybe I will have a man in a funny hat in all my sketches now.
Good tip to add another sheet underneath. There wasn’t any evidence of the ink going through to the next page but that’s a good safety net.
      Cheers, Donald.

I love your wonky lines - you're so confident and consistent with them that it looks like a positive style choice (my wonky lines are just due to ineptitude and a slight hand tremor 🤣).

Thanks a lot. I have a terribly shaky hand as well, I think it’s one of the reasons I started over exaggerating the wobbly lines, it means when I do an unintentionally shaky line you don’t really notice it. Parts of this maybe went too wonky, I would do it slightly differently if I did this sketch again. Learn something every time! Thanks for watching 🙂
