The codependent is the master of noticing/observing the behavior and giving them permission to continue! It's a dance. The empath and the narcissist. Like bread and butter. It's a classic archetype and match. It's been going on since the beginning of time. You could also say the same thing about Good and evil. Darkness and light. Both people in this dance need to take responsibility. Reconnect to source energy and stop looking to outside sources for other humans for validation. You won't ever find it. Not in any real or sustainable way. Connect back to your heart connection back to source. Try a spiritual practice like yoga or meditation. Try to do anything to generate your own energy. And then don't give it away for free anymore!

Narcissists are going to flip everything on you-- YOU will be treated as the NARCISSIST, while your life lays in ruins. THIS IS what happened to me. Gaslighting is used to dismiss you and again... get their way. My sister is a Narcissist and she does all of these things... Blanket statements. Blame shifting. I went no contact. There is no point in trying to correct the damage they have done... there is no way to correct this as far as I know. Narcissistic abuse is pure EVIL.

I have only just discovered your videos, Vivian, and wish I had sooner. I'm so glad you are happy now and so am I. After 41 years of marriage and at the age of 74 I finally left three months ago. Yea my ex narc boyfriend if i said i wasn't happy because he was being distant not really bothering with me ( devaluing me) he would more less say there's the door if you don't like it so i had to keep quite and it made me so anxious and sad. His way of controlling me he knew i was terrified of losing him, then he would discard me then few weeks later come back saying he missed me we went round and round this cycle over and over. Not in it now no contact.

“Combat communications” is not fun to undergo at all. I felt like I was going mad. Actually....i did finally. There are things I still keep questioning to this day. Crazy making experience. I love your words hoovering. Yess my mom make me into her merry go round games.. i almost cried when you said we keep hope they change but they lied. They never cant be fixed. After thousand years now i know im not insane and im not self pity as her called me.
Looking back I can almost laugh at the behaviors, but when you're in it it can be very scary and serious. I'm not making light of any type of physical abuse or putting anyone in danger. but their emotional manipulation tactics and pathological lying is so blatant it's ridiculous. and the codependent or the empath will minimize this and put up with it because they also are playing the game.
I had 10 years living with a narcissist. Unfortunately I am a recovering alcoholic and he used this against me day in and day out until I would relapse under the pressure. He consistently and persistently told lies about me to my friends, family and even employers. Undermined my career, until I gave my job up, then told me that I was a failure. I was always, wrong in his eyes and could do nothing please him. He stole my confidence, smile and belief in myself. My latest encounter with narcissists, enablers and gaslighting was at work yesterday. I was recently asked to chair a committee at my university. During a meeting a few weeks ago, one of our members started slapping another member repeatedly. I was so shocked that I couldn't even respond. So, last week I sent her an email and BCCed my boss (so that the situation and my handling of it would be documented) saying that her behavior was disrespectful, unprofessional, and unacceptable. I knew if I tried talked to her she would try to bully me and gaslight me. She complained to my boss, and he responded by saying that the violence was "consensual" and kicking me off the committee. BTW, violence (female-on-male) is very common in my department (foreign English teachers at a university in S. Korea). I've been complaining about it for years and been gas lit again and again. Yesterday was the final straw. I'm using this situation as motivation to improve myself and do whatever I need to do to get a new job. Cheers!

I've finally gone no contact. It took a lot, including physical violence towards me and a smear campaign (many of them.) It was the final straw when this behaviour became focused on my loved ones. Time and time again I got sucked in, it was all lies. I'm much happier this way, though many can't and don't understand as it's a parent.

ahhhh....gaslighting .... narc says I like to pull weeds. okay, let's get them in the garden. he walks over and talks with the neighbotr. I said ; you boasted how much you liked to pull weeds. he said; I said I'm good at pulling weeds. so I ended up pulling all of them. then he came into the house and said I needed to be o. psych meds. :D. I said you need to be accountable and do follow thru. he then said: I never said I was good at pull weeds but that I enjpyed it. hahaa....so exesperating. Eventually, it's gonna cat h up with them ....
Brings up "horror movie" memories. Mine planted a beautiful garden and I said I like to weed since it was before I had a clue. At first, he weeded it but then when I would ask him to help since I was pregnant and it was so hot after awhile. He said, " You said "you need to weed it" and also, "you said you like to weed." This was after a day of silent treatment and I would appeal to him again. A neighbor came and did it for me and he did not even care about her out there in the heat. At least she was not pregnant.

I have received all of these threats. And everything else you have said. It's textbook. This a personality disorder! It's real. It has clinical and diagnosable signs and behaviors. just as someone would have another diagnosable disease or illness this is something that is textbook and clinically understandable. It's not that their behavior is so bizarre it's that it's so predictable. that's what makes it so scary is that people choose to continue to stay because they think that they're going to get somewhere with the narcissist. most narcissists that I have known her also drug addicts and cannot self regulate at all so they have serious addictions.
The very best way to win with a narcissist is to not care about what they think of you. Their source of power and control is your people pleasing, your shame and your fear. Like this good doctor says, just don’t ever again bite in, stop, get off the merry go round. Because that’s exactly what it is, an endless round and round game of eating into your energy, time, standards, self respect, dignity, innocence and autonomy, you give and they take, to get their whims satisfied and their needs met, all so that they don’t have to feel responsible or take responsibility for their feelings, their problems or their mistakes. Just walk away, don’t make contact, and consider yourself saved from an endless Life term of depletion and loss. Keep your distance. If you share anything with a narc, give it to them. Let them have it, it will come back to you in some form. Be ready to gain your losses. Because most people will not tolerate a narc, and your value will be proven.

I'm realising just how much of a narcissist my ex was, and it's slowly making it easy to let go. Even after we've broken up and it was honestly as abusive as it could have been, mentally mostly, I'm still hung up on the things I was manipulated to believe, but realising the things this video helped me understand is making it easier.

Round and round the garden.....and don't tell them anything about your past in confidence either because they will throw that in your face when you're in an argument......the only way to effectively communicate with narcs is not to.
Never share and open up to a narcissist. They never let you in on their weaknesses, they only want to know yours. And for exactly that, to manipulate you.
The only thing that worked for me is to turn their narcissistic craziness on them (gaslighting and crazy talk from hell work wonderfully for this purpose). You don't win the argument of course, because it implies that there is some kind of logic in the conversation. But it makes them so so mad and to feel without control that after 2-4 times they run away from you like the devil from the cross. No hoovering, no revange, they just vanish into thin air.
No contact is the only way to go. It is hard at first, but it does get easier. It is like a plant - don't water it and it will wither away. Eventually you get to the point where you wonder what on earth you saw in them! Stay strong.

In Nov 2018 i discovered that my younger sister. ( 6 yrs my junior) is a covert Narcissist. I left home in 1975 at 14 y/o and reconnected w my siblings in 1986. There were visits in between. I have 3 younger sisters and i found out that the older one born in 1968 had been emotionally abusing our younger sister who was born in 1975. THIS Narcissistic sister tried to bully me but i made her account for her bad behavior and that is when i noticed that there was something terribly wrong with her way of reasoning and arguing! I recalled some instances when my other younger sister recounted to me seemingly normal/ usual misunderstanding between siblings but it was not normal. (of course i have no idea then that she was a NARCISSISt) When i dug deeper i found out that she was being emotionally abused by our NARCISSISTIC sister way back when they were children! Now i am trying to educate myself about how to deal with this and am trying to sheild my abused sister. It is a miracle that this sister was able to get away from this NARCISSISTIC sibling but she is showing sign of having PTSD! People here listen! I’m struggling to determine if some of the things being done still qualify. When I point out behavior that I think is wrong, the response is, “So I’m just not supposed to say anything? So I’m expected to just lie and tell you everything is ok and you have nothing to worry about? So you expect me to just eat shit and not stand up for myself?” I experience this situation of blocking off of any desirable solution where I am forced to respond in what they will feel is worst most hurtful way, breaking me, breaking my heart and soul. Also, I have actually done the triangulation, I reached out to their best friend for help. Since I wasn’t being heard, in secret I asked the friend what I should do, like why are they acting like this, have they always been this way? I needed answers. When he found out, obviously he was furious, never thought once, what have I done to cause this.
I know how confusing it is Michael, especially when at first it is subtle. But, this type of language is another way of deflecting away from their behaviour and putting the blame onto you. Similar to gaslighting, when they say things like: 'you're too sensitive' or 'you're exaggerating' etc. when you question it. I would suggest you to try to take your focus away from him. Don't waste your energy trying to rescue or change him. Don't change your behaviour, hoping it will affect this change. Focus on you. You can't change him, but you can change you. Is this relationship good enough for you? Is it good for your wellbeing? Bringing out the best in you? What are your gut instincts telling you? That his behaviour is unacceptable? If so, listen to them. Don't let him normalise bad behaviour and disrespectful treatment. If we let them test and push those boundaries, they'll do it over and over and the behaviour will get worse. Read every self help book you can on building self-esteem, as that is key to setting strong boundaries. Narcissists or those who are abusive detect we have a low sense of self worth and manipulate us. Whether or not it is gaslighting or narcissism, the most important thing is to take your focus away from her and put it back on to you. Trust your gut instincts when you ask yourself, even if she is your sister, is this relationship good for me? Is it bringing out the best in me? Healthy relationships should not leave you feeling anxious or hurt. A healthy person doesn't harm another, but wants to support and bring out the best in the other person. So, if you are left feeling depressed, then perhaps you need to pull away from the relationship for a while. Focus on building your self-esteem and learning how to set healthy boundaries. So you can say no to her, if her behaviour is unacceptable to you. Siblings can trigger a lot of issues in us, they press our childhood buttons too. So, there are times when it is good to have time out to give you that separation you need to reset a new relationship as equal adults. The only way to do that is to be strong in your sense of self-worth, so that your moods and feelings are not affected by anyone else, your happiness doesn't depend on anyone else either. The codependent is the master of noticing/observing the behavior and giving them permission to continue! It's a dance. The empath and the narcissist. Like bread and butter. It's a classic archetype and match. It's been going on since the beginning of time. You could also say the same thing about Good and evil. Darkness and light. Both people in this dance need to take responsibility. Reconnect to source energy and stop looking to outside sources for other humans for validation. You won't ever find it. Not in any real or sustainable way. Connect back to your heart connection back to source. Try a spiritual practice like yoga or meditation. Try to do anything to generate your own energy. And then don't give it away for free anymore!

#7 I got hit by all three in a matter of minutes of dropping my guard just for a second. Wife used it to justify her parents, then each of the in-laws. Narcissists are going to flip everything on you-- YOU will be treated as the NARCISSIST, while your life lays in ruins. THIS IS what happened to me. Gaslighting is used to dismiss you and again... get their way. My sister is a Narcissist and she does all of these things... Blanket statements. Blame shifting. I went no contact. There is no point in trying to correct the damage they have done... there is no way to correct this as far as I know. Narcissistic abuse is pure EVIL.
They certainly do. I agree. I find it difficult to see how they will ever change, given the nature of being a narcissist is: I'm right, you're wrong and everyone else is to blame! Best to know the warning signs and not get into a relationship with one as they suck you dry.

Yea my ex narc boyfriend if i said i wasn't happy because he was being distant not really bothering with me ( devaluing me) he would more less say there's the door if you don't like it so i had to keep quite and it made me so anxious and sad. His way of controlling me he knew i was terrified of losing him, then he would discard me then few weeks later come back saying he missed me we went round and round this cycle over and over. Not in it now no contact.

I love your words hoovering. Yess my mom make me into her merry go round games.. i almost cried when you said we keep hope they change but they lied. They never cant be fixed. After thousand years now i know im not insane and im not self pity as her called me.
Looking back I can almost laugh at the behaviors, but when you're in it it can be very scary and serious. I'm not making light of any type of physical abuse or putting anyone in danger. but their emotional manipulation tactics and pathological lying is so blatant it's ridiculous. and the codependent or the empath will minimize this and put up with it because they also are playing the game.
I had 10 years living with a narcissist. Unfortunately I am a recovering alcoholic and he used this against me day in and day out until I would relapse under the pressure. He consistently and persistently told lies about me to my friends, family and even employers. Undermined my career, until I gave my job up, then told me that I was a failure. I was always, wrong in his eyes and could do nothing please him. He stole my confidence, smile and belief in myself. It is two years since I moved away from him and only now am I starting to re-build myself, it’s been a very painful process but I’m looking to the future with wobbly confidence that I will be o.k

My latest encounter with narcissists, enablers and gaslighting was at work yesterday. I was recently asked to chair a committee at my university. During a meeting a few weeks ago, one of our members started slapping another member repeatedly. I was so shocked that I couldn't even respond. So, last week I sent her an email and BCCed my boss (so that the situation and my handling of it would be documented) saying that her behavior was disrespectful, unprofessional, and unacceptable. I knew if I tried talked to her she would try to bully me and gaslight me. She complained to my boss, and he responded by saying that the violence was "consensual" and kicking me off the committee. BTW, violence (female-on-male) is very common in my department (foreign English teachers at a university in S. Korea). I've been complaining about it for years and been gas lit again and again. Yesterday was the final straw. I'm using this situation as motivation to improve myself and do whatever I need to do to get a new job. Cheers!

I've finally gone no contact. It took a lot, including physical violence towards me and a smear campaign (many of them.) It was the final straw when this behaviour became focused on my loved ones. Time and time again I got sucked in, it was all lies. I'm much happier this way, though many can't and don't understand as it's a parent.

Brings up "horror movie" memories. Mine planted a beautiful garden and I said I like to weed since it was before I had a clue. At first, he weeded it but then when I would ask him to help since I was pregnant and it was so hot after awhile. He said, " You said "you need to weed it" and also, "you said you like to weed." This was after a day of silent treatment and I would appeal to him again. A neighbor came and did it for me and he did not even care about her out there in the heat. At least she was not pregnant.

Im really alone. No contact. So happy...and i dont ask for help that much coz the energy he used to drain, now i use for me and the kids and gets easier and happier by the day. I have received all of these threats. And everything else you have said. It's textbook. This a personality disorder! It's real. It has clinical and diagnosable signs and behaviors. just as someone would have another diagnosable disease or illness this is something that is textbook and clinically understandable. It's not that their behavior is so bizarre it's that it's so predictable. that's what makes it so scary is that people choose to continue to stay because they think that they're going to get somewhere with the narcissist. most narcissists that I have known her also drug addicts and cannot self regulate at all so they have serious addictions.

The very best way to win with a narcissist is to not care about what they think of you. Their source of power and control is your people pleasing, your shame and your fear. Like this good doctor says, just don’t ever again bite in, stop, get off the merry go round. Because that’s exactly what it is, an endless round and round game of eating into your energy, time, standards, self respect, dignity, innocence and autonomy, you give and they take, to get their whims satisfied and their needs met, all so that they don’t have to feel responsible or take responsibility for their feelings, their problems or their mistakes. Just walk away, don’t make contact, and consider yourself saved from an endless Life term of depletion and loss. Keep your distance. If you share anything with a narc, give it to them. Let them have it, it will come back to you in some form. Be ready to gain your losses. Because most people will not tolerate a narc, and your value will be proven.

I'm realising just how much of a narcissist my ex was, and it's slowly making it easy to let go. Even after we've broken up and it was honestly as abusive as it could have been, mentally mostly, I'm still hung up on the things I was manipulated to believe, but realising the things this video helped me understand is making it easier.

Round and round the garden.....and don't tell them anything about your past in confidence either because they will throw that in your face when you're in an argument......the only way to effectively communicate with narcs is not to.
Never share and open up to a narcissist. They never let you in on their weaknesses, they only want to know yours. And for exactly that, to manipulate you.
The only thing that worked for me is to turn their narcissistic craziness on them (gaslighting and crazy talk from hell work wonderfully for this purpose). You don't win the argument of course, because it implies that there is some kind of logic in the conversation. But it makes them so so mad and to feel without control that after 2-4 times they run away from you like the devil from the cross. No hoovering, no revange, they just vanish into thin air.

No contact is the only way to go. It is hard at first, but it does get easier. It is like a plant - don't water it and it will wither away. Eventually you get to the point where you wonder what on earth you saw in them! Stay strong.

Thank you, I have experienced all of this with several family members, is seems to be a cultural bent, or genetic. Whole entire families are like this. One gets to the point where they wonder if this is normal everywhere, but I saw from living in other parts of the country that it is not. Our region is enmeshed in this narcissism.

In Nov 2018 i discovered that my younger sister. ( 6 yrs my junior) is a covert Narcissist.
I left home in 1975 at 14 y/o and reconnected w my siblings in 1986. There were visits in between.
I have 3 younger sisters and i found out that the older one born in 1968 had been emotionally abusing our younger sister who was born in 1975.
THIS Narcissistic sister tried to bully me but i made her account for her bad behavior and that is when i noticed that there was something terribly wrong with her way of reasoning and arguing!
I recalled some instances when my other younger sister recounted to me seemingly normal/ usual misunderstanding between siblings but it was not normal. (of course i have no idea then that she was a NARCISSISt)
When i dug deeper i found out that she was being emotionally abused by our NARCISSISTIC sister way back when they were children!
Now i am trying to educate myself about how to deal with this and am trying to sheild my abused sister. It is a miracle that this sister was able to get away from this NARCISSISTIC sibling but she is showing sign of having PTSD!

I’m struggling to determine if some of the things being done still qualify. When I point out behavior that I think is wrong, the response is, “So I’m just not supposed to say anything? So I’m expected to just lie and tell you everything is ok and you have nothing to worry about? So you expect me to just eat shit and not stand up for myself?” I experience this situation of blocking off of any desirable solution where I am forced to respond in what they will feel is worst most hurtful way, breaking me, breaking my heart and soul.
Also, I have actually done the triangulation, I reached out to their best friend for help. Since I wasn’t being heard, in secret I asked the friend what I should do, like why are they acting like this, have they always been this way? I needed answers.
When he found out, obviously he was furious, never thought once, what have I done to cause this.
I know how confusing it is Michael, especially when at first it is subtle. But, this type of language is another way of deflecting away from their behaviour and putting the blame onto you. Similar to gaslighting, when they say things like: 'you're too sensitive' or 'you're exaggerating' etc. when you question it.
I would suggest you to try to take your focus away from him. Don't waste your energy trying to rescue or change him. Don't change your behaviour, hoping it will affect this change. Focus on you. You can't change him, but you can change you. Is this relationship good enough for you? Is it good for your wellbeing? Bringing out the best in you? What are your gut instincts telling you? That his behaviour is unacceptable? If so, listen to them. Don't let him normalise bad behaviour and disrespectful treatment. If we let them test and push those boundaries, they'll do it over and over and the behaviour will get worse. Read every self help book you can on building self-esteem, as that is key to setting strong boundaries. Narcissists or those who are abusive detect we have a low sense of self worth and manipulate us. Whether or not it is gaslighting or narcissism, the most important thing is to take your focus away from her and put it back on to you. Get help and support to understand the nature of codependent relationships and to break the cycle.
