Just bought a '70 800. Looking at doing same thing. Used to 10 years of Mercruiser being in forward. DEFINITELY needs to be in neutral. 🤣🤣🤣 That spring-loaded gearbox is touchy as all get out.
I just watched your video I changed my stator and just realized I had both washers on top just went outside and changed it thanks for the video now need to redo my carbs.. I am dreading that.
Great series of videos from what I've seen so far. Just bought a 76 just like this. Trying to work through installing it on my pontoon. Just told my wife that I don't need no stinkin' manual if I watch your vid's. Hopefully it will go smooth. The only thing wrong with the motor I can find so far is that 2 of the 3 wires coming out of the distributor are broken off at the bakelite insulation. Don't think this can be fixed, so I'm on hold until I can find a used one. Only spent $500 on the motor so hopefully, I can button it up without much more cash and get the dang pontoon on the water for the first time in almost 2 years!
Can't seem to find one on the internet. Only the generic ones that cover 970 different motors! Couldn't check compression prior to buying it, coz the owner had it hanging from a tree limb with the cover on. The crank does turn smoothly so hopefully there's no problem. For being 40 years old, it looks remarkably good. Here's to my crossed fingers! btw, thanks for the quick response!
I have '78 Merc 1400 very similar to what you have in your video. She will start but as soon as I let off ignition "start" to "on" position she dies. Looks like stator is bad due to resistance ohm's reading. Bought new stator and going to install .. Thanks for Vid !! Question: Can I "assume" that she does not run in "on" position because my Stator was bad thus not deliviring the 12 V through the engine to "run"? Please advise and Again Thanks for Your Video !! James
I have a question when I get my merc 650 in the water and start it, and give full throttle I get 2000 rpm and it's not going full speed after 10 mins it jumps to 5000 rpm where it should be and goes full speed. can you help?

Do u have too remove the distributor on carbs rebuild
Jesse Mullins I think mine was already off. It's only a few bolts to remove. No biggie.
Measurements on the flywheel??

Nevermind found the video of you giving the measurements of the sticker.

+sam faron Hmmm..... What happens when you throttle back down? Same thing over and over? Or is it just the first time you have it in the water?

Gonna take out this weekend and see
